Following President Joe Biden’s iconic trip to Kyiv on Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Moscow would halt its involvement in the sole nuclear arms control peace agreement.
The treaty was signed in 2011 and is the only one of its kind.
Russia Abandons Agreement
A 2011 agreement referred to as New START, which sets previously agreed-upon limits on the types and numbers of nuclear warheads and delivery mechanisms each nation can retain, was allegedly broken by Russia in January, according to the United States.
As per CNN, in the only agreement that places restrictions on the biggest nuclear arsenals on the globe, Russia was preventing U.S. teams from visiting Russian weapons installations as allowed by the treaty’s stipulations.
Putin claimed that America is interfering with Russia’s nuclear plants and trying to hand them a strategic defeat.
He said he is informing America today that Russia is terminating its membership in the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Weapons. Putin said this in an address to the nation on Tuesday. His comments were reported on by The Wall Street Journal.
The very first time the United States claimed disobedience to the 2011 pact, the State Department made clear in its report to Congress in January that Russia refused to engage in discussions about infringement issues and obstructed inspections.

Putin’s choice, according to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, is both incredibly terrible and downright irresponsible.
In an interview with the WSJ, he continued by saying they remain ready to speak about strategic weapons constraints with Russia at any time, regardless of whatever else is occurring globally or in their relationship.
He believes it is important that they maintain our good behavior in this regard.
As per Reuters, Putin stated in the speech that certain people in Washington were considering performing nuclear tests and cautioned if the U.S. chose to do so, he might consider launching nuclear weapons as well.
Putin declared that Moscow will succeed and accused the West of using the military operation in Ukraine as a pretext to attack Russia.

The deal was reached by former President Barack Obama following the expiration of the START I weapons limitation pact with Russia.
As reported by the WSJ, the Biden administration wanted to maintain New START in place as Russia continued what it has repeatedly described as a justified invasion of Ukraine.
The deal was extended by the administration in 2021 and it will now end on February 4th, 2026.
America Prepared to Stand Against Russia
The United States is willing to take on crucial arms control laws, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council informed the Daily Caller News Foundation.
For the first time since the war started in February 2022, Vice President Biden visited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Monday. At their meeting, he committed to $500 million in new aid for Ukraine.
