Journalist Has Ironic Run-in With Fact-checking on Twitter

Twitter changed considerably since it was bought out by Elon Musk last year. Since Musk’s acquisition of the platform, many of the accounts that were previously nuked have since been reinstated.

Furthermore, Musk introduced Twitter Blue to the site, in addition to making sure that fact-checking is applied evenly across the board, rather than being not consistently upheld.

This means Democrats and Republicans alike are subject to being fact-checked on Twitter, regardless of their celebrity or number of followers.

Though as it turns out, one left-wing journalist is not so pleased with how fact-checking is working on Twitter these days, according to the Daily Caller.

What Just Happened?

Journalist Judd Legum has made a regular habit of advocating for people he dislikes and disagrees with to be censored. This is of little surprise, especially given that Legum leans left-of-center on the political spectrum.

In recent years, it’s become extremely common for leftists to support the censorship of those they disagree with. More often than not, this rallying of censorship is justified by its supporters stating anything goes to stop the spread of misinformation.

.@davidhogg111 has the right to express his opinion about the second amendment without @CommunityNotes attaching commentary.

However, when it comes to someone he agrees with even being fact-checked, Legum has a problem with it. This was revealed when the journalist criticized Twitter for fact-checking a post made by gun control activist David Hogg.

In Hogg’s tweet, he claimed no American has a right to a gun. Hogg then shared his own interpretation of the Second Amendment, which Twitter subsequently fact-checked.

Technically, this was not a censored post since it was allowed to remain on Twitter. Though this didn’t stop Legum’s indignation over Twitter choosing to leave a fact-check on the content anyway.

Can’t Have It Both Ways

Later, Legum went on to claim that Twitter’s Community Notes appears to be a watered-down version of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Though critics of the journalist warn that it’s hypocritical for him to try having his cake and eating it too when it comes to censorship or mere fact-checking.

Also, it’s been pointed out that Legum would likely be all for the Community Notes on Twitter fact-checking people who express pro-gun sentiment and support for the right to bear arms.

Why has @CommunityNotes turned into a slightly more polite version of the NRA. It’s supposed to be reserved for MISLEADING tweets. Hogg’s tweet is not misleading. https://t.co/XEYAn52YM9

At the end of the day, Legum’s grievances are less about fact-checking and more about his preferred promotion of the politics and ideologies that he agrees with.

Nevertheless, Twitter’s fact-checker isn’t going anywhere and neither are the Community Notes.

Do you believe the left has shown a double standard when it comes to how they approach censorship, claims of misinformation, and now fact-checking programs on social media? Do you agree with how Twitter’s fact-checking service is operating these days?
