GOP Goes After FBI for Cracking Down on America’s Catholics

The Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives subpoenaed the director of the FBI, Christopher Wray.

This happened after information emerged that the federal law enforcement agency set out to investigate “extremists” allegedly found in Catholic Church parishes throughout the United States.

Chilling Plan to Watch ‘Radical-Traditionalist’ Catholics

The increasingly anti-Christian actions of the Biden administration should probably come as no surprise.

Thus, on January 23, the FBI Field Office in Richmond, Virginia issued a memo expressing “interest” in probing “racially or ethnically motived” persons described as “violent extremists” subscribing to “radical-traditionalist Catholic ideology.”

The memo, which has since been withdrawn, proposed that FBI agents should meet with Catholic Church leaders in order to seek out “warning signs of radicalization.” These agents were even encouraged to recruit the latter for monitoring “suspicious activity tripwires,” The New York Post reported.

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, has described the FBI memo as “chilling.”

As a result, he initiated the subpoena of FBI Director Christopher Wray, summoning him to explain what seemed like a proposed FBI crackdown on Catholic Christian Americans.

In his letter to Wray earlier this week, Jordan informed him that the Judiciary Committee is now investigating how the FBI was handling its “violent extremism” probes against Catholic Christians.

FBI Increasingly ‘Biased’ Against Catholic Christians

The Ohio Republican revealed the feds used at least one undercover operative to produce their anti-Catholic memo, which called for having church leaders snoop and snitch on their parishioners.

Describing the revelations as “shocking information,” Jordan said the subpoena sought to “compel” Wray’s “full cooperation” with the House Judiciary probe.

The report points out that Republican lawmakers have been accusing the FBI of growing anti-Catholic bias. This comes since last June when the US Supreme Court repealed Roe v. Wade.

In a testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier this year, FBI chief Wray himself denounced the memo of the field office in Richmond, Virginia, saying he was “aghast” when he first learned about it.

He claimed the FBI conducted no investigations on the grounds of “religious affiliations and practices” and the bureau’s Inspection Division was looking into the matter.
