Geert Wilders’s Dutch Coalition Pledges ‘Strictest-Ever’ Migration Policy, Warns Illegals Will Be Removed ‘By Force’

Dutch conservative leader Geert Wilders has pledged to implement his country’s “strictest ever” asylum policy after he finally reached a coalition agreement to form a government.

Wilders yesterday confirmed the completion of a coalition agreement after six months of negotiations following last year’s general election, in which he won a significant number of seats but short of a governing majority.

As a result, Wilders is pledging to bring in major immigration reforms that would prevent the ongoing invasion of the country’s borders.

MailOnline notes:

The Netherlands has today said it will opt out of European Union rules to bring in its ‘strictest-ever’ asylum policy following Geert Wilders’ shock election victory.

The newly agreed Dutch coalition government said the new policy will see people removed from the European country ‘by force’ – setting up a clash with leaders in Brussels even before it has taken office.

The 26-page coalition agreement emerged early Thursday after six months of gruelling talks between four parties following last years’ stunning election victory by Wilders, the long-time Euro-sceptic and leader of the far-right PVV party.

The parties said they would file a request to the European Commission for an opt-out on European asylum policy ‘as soon as possible.’ People without a valid residence permit will be deported ‘by force if necessary,’ said the report.

Yet as reported by The Gateway Pundit, Wilders has had to make significant concessions to his left-wing coalition partners that will soften parts of his agenda. This includes dropping opposition to funding Ukraine’s war against Russia and withdrawing his name for the role of Prime Minister.

However, Wilders remained upbeat about the prospects of the coalition government, which involves working with three so-called “right-leaning” political parties.

“‘I can’t see this fail… If everything goes according to plan today, it will be a great outcome,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “We have a negotiating agreement. But the factions will also discuss it later, so there may be adjustments and amendments.”

An agreement on who will serve as Prime Minister has yet to be finalized.

SHE DID IT! Scumbag Senator Bob Menendez Blames His Wife at ‘Gold Bars’ Corruption Trial

The Democratic Senator for New Jersey, Bob Menendez, attempted to shift blame onto his wife during opening statements at his ongoing corruption trial.

Menendez went on trial for corruption this week and is facing 18 criminal counts, including bribery, extortion, wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and acting as a foreign agent.

His lawyer, Avi Weitzman, told the jury that his wife Nadine had “kept him in the dark” about financial matters and that they led separate lives.

“Let me say this about Nadine: Nadine had financial concerns that she kept from Bob,” he said. “The government’s allegations that the senator sold his office and his loyalty to this country are outrageously false. Bob was doing his job, and he was doing it right.”

Day 4: Menendez Trial -Manhattan Federal Court

However, prosecutor Lara Pomerantz accused Menendez of putting “his power up for sale” and using his wife as a middleman in his trade of political influence for money, gold bars, and other valuables.

“For years he betrayed the people he was supposed to serve by taking bribes,” she said. “This was not politics as usual. This was politics for profit. This was a United States senator on the take.”

Senator Bob Menendez reportedly may blame alleged crimes on his wife in his corruption trial.

Investigators who executed a warrant at his home in September found over $480,000 in cash stuffed in items of clothing, as well as 13 gold bars worth over $100,000. Agents also uncovered other lavish gifts, including a Mercedes-Benz and various home furnishings.

Prosecutors argue that these discovered items were given in return for acting on behalf of the Egyptian government. They also allege that he accepted bribes from the Gulf state of Qatar.

Menendez is standing trial alongside Fred Daibes, a New Jersey real estate developer accused of delivering the gold and cash to the senator, and businessman Wael Hana, who is accused of facilitating a deal between Menendez and Egypt.

Both have also entered not guilty pleas.

The trial continues.

In a Time When it Feels Like We’ve Been Abandoned by Feel Good Stories, J6 Political Prisoner Enrique Tarrio and CondemnedUsa Share Heartwarming Story

Guest post by Jenn Baker, CondemnedUSA

Enrique Tarrio, Proud Boys Leader and January 6th Political Hostage, is serving a 22-year sentence for NOT being in Washington DC, and yet, being one of the “masterminds” of that day. While being imprisoned in Kentucky, Tarrio has vowed to make the most of the time that he is being forced to endure.

While incarcerated, prisoners are given an opportunity to work. They have several programs that are offered in the various facilities. At FCI Manchester, where Tarrio is serving his time, they offer a program that allows inmates to train and bord dogs. The dogs are trained initially to become service dogs. Some of them don’t make it as a service dog, however, they continue to train so they can be adopted by a good home.

Tarrio became involved with this program and received his first dog named Blue. Blue is an Australian Shepherd/ Poodle mix. He is black and white with steel blue eyes, big paws, and A LOT of energy. The dogs do everything with their trainer.

Blue would be with Tarrio 24/7, sleeping in a kennel next to each other within a locked cell.

The day came when it was time for Blue to start getting ready for adoption. Tarrio reached out to CondemnedUSA asking for help in finding Blue a wonderful forever home, and they answered his call and found the perfect family.

We found Jimmy and Amy of Texas, and they were ecstatic at the possibility of adopting Blue. These two Patriots recently lost one of their beloved dogs to cancer and didn’t need to be asked twice. Last weekend, Jimmy and Amy hopped in their RV and headed to Kentucky to pick up the newest addition to their family.

Pawsibilities Unleashed , out of Frankfort Kentucky, is the organization that makes this program possible. They provided Blue’s new owners with all the necessary medical and training paperwork. There are fees that go along with the adoption which can vary depending on the program and medical needs of the individual dog.

Once they arrived in Kentucky, Jimmy and Amy met Blue and fell in love with him instantly. Although they did not get to meet with Tarrio, he made sure they received his personal daily journal, which he kept while training Blue. Here are a few excerpts:

On the trip home to Texas, Jimmy and Amy took note of Enrique’s journal and continued with the training Blue had received from him. At first, Blue was nervous and anxious, as the ride in the RV seemed to be overwhelming. His newly found freedom was full of smells, sights, and feelings this puppy had never experienced before. He wanted to stay next to Jimmy while the RV was moving and kept trying to lay by his feet, which was not ideal since Jimmy was driving. It is noteworthy that at only five months old, Blue had spent over a month with all men, and it seems he was very comfortable with the male energy Jimmy was giving off.

Blue staying close to Jimmy.

Blue being blocked by the cooler to keep him from sitting at Jimmy’s feet while driving. He is sitting cross-legged, close, and pouting just a bit.

Amy took Blue out for walks, training, and to use the bathroom while traveling. After a good day on the road, Blue finally got comfortable in the RV just in time for the last part of the trip.

Shakedown command, in which Tarrio says “You’ll never find anything on Blue because he is a good boy.”
Blue following his “Shakedown” Command

Once home, Amy and Jimmy introduced Blue to their other two dogs, and it was not easy at first. When Amy checked in after three days of Blue being in his new home, it was nothing but praise and happiness. Blue and the other dogs have adapted to each other and are playing, sleeping, and eating together. There is more life and pep in the two older dogs, who seemed melancholy since the passing of their “brother.”

Enrique shares the last and best command with Blue’s new owners, Jimmy and Amy.

This is a new chapter for Amy and Jimmy’s family. They have a wonderful new puppy, and it was all due to a small but meaningful program that has made a difference in so many lives.

Tarrio will, hopefully soon, have another dog to train and be able to send that one off to find an amazing forever home, as he did with Blue. He has spoken with Amy since they returned to Texas and is checking on Blue’s training. He couldn’t be happier that Blue is adapting to his new family and surroundings.

CondemnedUSA will continue to help with the little things, as well as the big, for the J6 Political Hostages. They will be there to answer the call. Tarrio knew he could trust CondemnedUSA to give Blue his forever home and knew he would see Blue again because he called them first.

Irate Leftists Wage War on Chiefs’ Star Kicker for Being Too Conservative

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker really hit a nerve with his commencement speech for Benedictine College’s 2024 graduation.

Chronically online leftists had a bone to pick with every word in his speech besides “the” and “is,” calling him “misogynistic, “homophobic,” and “hateful” for proclaiming truths all Christians believed until about five minutes ago.

But, for the left, the most “offensive” part of the speech came in a clip shared to the social media platform X by the account Christian Nightmares.

Jesus Christ… pic.twitter.com/bY9bE2XwUm

— Christian Nightmares (@ChristnNitemare) May 14, 2024

In the clip, Butker addressed the graduating ladies of Benedictine College, congratulating them on their “amazing accomplishment.”

He directed his attention to them because “it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.” He continued, saying that, while many of them were probably thinking about their potential careers, more of them were likely “most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

And here came the part that made leftist social media start melting in rage like the Wicked Witch of the West: “I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I’m on this stage, and able to be the man I am, because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.”

Choking up as he thought about his beloved wife, he concluded, “It cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”

Now, for most Christians, especially of a conservative bent, what he said was not only uncontroversial, but wonderfully refreshing.

But for the left, he couldn’t have provoked more rage than if he advocated for indiscriminate puppy-murder.

USA Today, reporting on the speech, decried Butker’s use of the word “vocation” as a 1950’s throwback, before castigating his views as “antiquated,” “extremist” and “Neanderthalic.”

Podcaster and former MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann led the charge on X, disparaging Butker by saying, he “isn’t even considered an actual football player by other football players and he’s going to spew his bulls*** religion-based misogyny without consequences?”

Others quickly followed suit, with one user contending that “Colin Kaepernick was threatened, blacklisted, condemned for peacefully taking a knee in protest against racial injustice/police brutality, but Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gives a misogynistic, bigoted, homophobic speech and it’s fine? Racism.”

Let me understand this, Colin Kaepernick was threatened, blacklisted, condemned for peacefully taking a knee in protest against racial injustice/police brutality, but Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gives a misogynistic, bigoted, homophobic speech and it’s fine? Racism.

— Ricky Davila (@TheRickyDavila) May 15, 2024

Another user asked rhetorically, “So, have the ⁦@Chiefs fired this incel yet? #Boycott #Chiefs until they do. Women and LGBTQ hater —-> Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker unleashes on Pride month, Biden during commencement address.”

So, have the ⁦@Chiefs⁩ fired this incel yet? #Boycott #Chiefs until they do. Women and LGBTQ hater —-> Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker unleashes on Pride month, Biden during commencement address https://t.co/jQAm9EVEZm

— Nicole L. Augenti, Esq. (@Nicole1515) May 15, 2024

Now, one of the odd things about this extreme backlash to Butker’s words was that, for one, many forgot or never bothered to learn the context of the speech.

This was at a conservative, Catholic college — what did they expect a commencement speaker at a Catholic college to say?

For another, Butker has never made any secret regarding his faith.

At the commencement speech for Georgia Tech last year, he encouraged the young women there to marry and have children, and his social media bios proudly proclaim “Christus Regnat” (or, Christ reigns).

A quick look at his twitter feed shows him praising God and quoting a saint or Scripture with almost every picture he posts.

“The secret of happiness is to live moment by moment and to thank God for what He is sending us every day in His goodness.” – Saint Gianna Beretta Molla pic.twitter.com/MR2FeFeOPs

— Harrison Butker (@buttkicker7) November 26, 2021

And, contrary to all the haters on social media, he never said women shouldn’t pursue a career — he never once told women they should “get back in the kitchen.”

Instead, he praised the inherent goodness of a vocation denigrated by feminists and those on the left and pointed out how this important role has been demeaned by the lies that women need a career to be “fulfilled.”

But, clearly, Butker’s words hit a raw nerve, almost more so than his anti-LGBT and pro-life messages he also proclaimed at the commencement address.

Perhaps some of the left knew what he was saying was true and hated the reminder, lashing out accordingly.

Hopefully, Butker will not only stand firm in the face of all this unmerited backlash, but also continue to proclaim the truth of the Gospel and the roles of men and women, with even more fearlessness and tenacity.

Disgraced Rapper Lizzo Credits Anti-Israel Activists For Curing Her ‘Deep, Dark Depression’

The rapper Lizzo has credited anti-Israel activists for helping her recover from a recent bout of depression.

In a post on her Instagram page, Lizzo said that the pro-Palestinian protests across the U.S. and around the world have “activated” her desire to live.

She explained:

I just want to take a second and give a personal thank you to all of the activists who have been working tirelessly to help the liberation and the freedom of the people who have been genocided (sic) all over the world, specifically Palestine, Sudan, and the Congo. On a personal note, you have activated me. I was in a deep dark depression. I had some mental health crises and episodes over the last nine months. And I was not present.

I also want to take this moment and thank all of the anti-genocide, anti-war protests that have been happening at collage campuses. What these students have done and are doing is so deeply important. I can’t even express it in one video.

The singer, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, is currently facing a lawsuit from three former employees who accused her of sexual harassment, creating a hostile work environment and racial and religious discrimination.

Despite her artistic success, Lizzo is the subject of widespread mockery for her unappealing appearance, which she often excaerbates by wearing suggestive and highly revealing clothing. She is also an ardent supporter of Joe Biden and recently attended a fundraiser for his presidential campaign.

Last month, she abruptly announced that she was quitting the music industry before quickly backtracking on her pledge.

“When I say ‘I quit’, I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention,” she said in a video at the time. “What I’m not gonna quit is the joy of my life, which is making music, which is connecting to people, because I know I’m not alone. In no way shape or form am I the only person who is experiencing that negative voice that seems to be louder than the positive.”

Apocalypse Soon?

Apocalypse Soon?

Can sanity prevail amidst this latest round of nuclear saber rattling?

As if things weren’t bad enough, the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine have, in recent days, occasioned a lot of loose talk about the use of nuclear weapons.

Washington’s most reliable peddler of dangerous ideas, Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, has taken to the notion that because President Harry Truman, against the advice of his most senior military advisers, committed two unprecedented war crimes on August 6 and 9, 1945, that that somehow provides moral cover for the ongoing slaughter of tens of thousands of innocent civilians in Gaza.

At a hearing on Capitol Hill last week, Graham asked Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Q. Brown Jr. whether they would have supported dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end the Second World War.

Show hearings such as these are quite often a race to the bottom, and in this particular case the participants floored the gas. In response, Brown declared, “Well, I’ll tell you, it stopped the World War.” Graham, correctly sensing that Brown possessed neither the knowledge nor courage to utter the correct answer, then moved in to make his point:

If we stop weapons necessary to destroy the enemies of the state of Israel at a time of great peril, we will pay a price. This is obscene. It is absurd…. Give Israel what they need to fight the war they can’t afford to lose. This is Hiroshima and Nagasaki on steroids.

Graham reiterated his message over the weekend. Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, he blustered, “Why is it okay for America to drop two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end their existential threat war? Why is it okay for us to do that? I thought it was okay.”

Graham’s hysterical descent into a kind of Strangelovian madness comes at a time of heightened tensions across Eurasia. Last week, the president of the Iranian Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, Kamal Kharrazi, told Al Jazeera that Iran has the “capability” to make a nuclear weapon, but they have “not made the decision to produce a nuclear bomb.” “However,” he continued, “if the Iranian interests are threatened in this manner, we may change this doctrine.” This pronouncement comes on the heels of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement that Russia plans to hold military exercises simulating the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons.

Amidst all of this nuclear saber rattling comes a new book, Nuclear War: A Scenario, by the distinguished investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen. The fact that the book is currently climbing both the New York Times and Los Angeles Times bestseller lists is perhaps proof that sanity still prevails—at least in some quarters.

Indeed, Jacobsen’s might be the most important contribution toward raising awareness about the ever-present risk of nuclear catastrophe since the publication of John Hersey’s harrowing on-the-ground reporting from Hiroshima 80 years ago.

The book sketches out a fictional (so far, anyway) scenario that examines what a 72-minute journey to nuclear apocalypse might look like. Based on interviews with 46 on-the-record sources, dozens more on background and bolstered by newly declassified documents, Jacobsen constructs a minute-by-minute timeline towards catastrophe that begins with a nuclear attack on the U.S. by North Korea that, within a very brief time, brings in Russia. As Jacobsen points out, “It takes 26 minutes and 40 seconds for a ballistic missile to get from a launchpad in Russia to the East Coast of the United States. That was true in 1959–60…and it’s true today.”

According to Jacobsen, there are currently enough forward deployed ‘launch-on-warning’ nuclear armed missiles to kill around 5 billion people. Of the scenario she sketches out with terrifying precision, Jacobson notes,

I haven’t had anyone who actually runs these scenarios for NORAD take issue with the choices that I’ve made and the way in which the decision trees unfold, which makes it all the more frightening.

Still worse, our elected representatives have been MIA on the issue of nuclear disarmament since at least the late Reagan years. As Melvin Goodman, a former CIA analyst and professor of government at Johns Hopkins University, recently observed,

Despite the end of the “Cold War” three decades ago and the realization of the illusion of “limited” nuclear or the suicidal aspects of “mutual assured destruction,” there is still no comprehensive approach toward nuclear disarmament…President Bill Clinton abolished the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency nearly 30 years ago, and currently there are fewer Foreign Service Officers in the Department of State than there are members of military service bands.

Jacobsen’s new book is a much needed wake-up call. But will our governing elites, at long last, hear it?

The U.S. Failed to Restore Deterrence with Iran, But That’s Not Its Job

The U.S. Failed to Restore Deterrence with Iran, But That’s Not Its Job

Scaring off threatening actors in far-flung parts of the world has little to do with American interests.

The world is at war, and it is Washington’s fault. At least, that is the opinion of many U.S. pundits.

For instance, Iran’s attack on Israel triggered a spate of articles calling it a failure of American deterrence. The Wall Street Journal’s Gerard Baker described the major escalation in the two governments’ long-running geopolitical contest as a decision “to ignore the warning from Joe Biden.” The Journal editorialized that deterrence failed not just once, but “again.”

By similar logic, Liam Collins of New America and Frank Sobchak of West Point argued that “deterrence failed in Ukraine.” At fault, they contend, were President George W. Bush in 2008 and President Barack Obama in 2014 for failing to respond to Moscow sooner. The Atlantic Council’s Mercedes Sapuppo also blamed the latter for not going to war over Crimea. Arizona’s ever-truculent Sen. John McCain condemned Obama for encouraging Russia by failing to bomb Syria.

John Bolton similarly faulted President Donald Trump for wanting to withdraw from Syria and President Joe Biden for withdrawing from Afghanistan. Rep. Michael McCaul, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also held the latter responsible for Russia’s invasion. Fiona Hill added “the withdrawal from Iraq, withdrawal from Syria, and the whole fraught history of United States interventions in the last two decades” as causes. Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts even blamed Biden’s “fold” on the Nord Stream II pipeline and “steadfast refusal to secure America’s borders.”

Other policymakers worry that the U.S. is similarly encouraging China to attack Taiwan. McCain’s go-to culprit was Obama, again for not doing more against Russia over Crimea: “That has emboldened other aggressive actors—from Chinese nationalists to Al Qaeda terrorists and Iranian theocrats.” The Washington Times’ Bill Gertz cited Biden’s failure to prevent both Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Iran’s assault on Israel: “Fears are growing that China’s leaders will calculate that American power has declined to a point where Beijing’s military can act with impunity and launch a major regional conflict.” Baker warned that “If we continue to defer to rather than deter our adversaries, Beijing will surely respond like Iran, Russia and terrorists worldwide when this president says ‘Don’t’.”

Moreover, “The Taliban ignored his warnings,” complained Baker, and took control of Afghanistan. Indeed, Baker charged Biden’s “failure to deter” as causing many of the world’s troubles: “Under this president so many lines have been crossed that the world is running out of red paint. His failure to deter can be measured in the terrifying number of historic geopolitical firsts recorded in the past three years: the first major ground war in Europe in nearly 80 years, the deadliest attack on Israel in its 75-year history, the first time in its 45-year history that Iran’s revolutionary regime has directly attacked the Jewish state.”

Yet current policy evidently has protected America. Since Pearl Harbor, U.S. territory has been attacked only by terrorists, most dramatically on 9/11. Deterrence worked when it was most needed—to safeguard America.

So, whom else should America deter, and from doing what?

To start, the Israel–Iran contretemps was not Washington’s fault. Rather, Iran failed to deter the Israeli bombing of Tehran’s diplomatic facility and Israel failed to deter an Iranian response. Israel routinely targets Iranian interests in Syria and even mounts operations in Iran, including the assassination of nuclear scientists. Most recent was the Damascus strike, called “an unprecedented escalation.” Even the Washington Post’s Jason Rezaian, who suffered years in Iranian captivity, pointed out that Tehran’s assault “was not a simple act of unprovoked aggression.”

Iranian officials apparently decided that Jerusalem had overstepped, requiring a serious response. Their objective, argued Sina Toossi of the Center for International Policy, was “to establish strategic deterrence.” The New York Times discussed how Jerusalem missed Iran’s new willingness to retaliate.

In turn, Israel, not the U.S., failed to deter Iran. With the region’s strongest military, including nuclear weapons and abundant support from Washington, Jerusalem long has threatened to do whatever it takes to protect itself. Yet Tehran struck back. Although the latter’s response appeared choreographed to allow the U.S. and allied states to shoot down most of the incoming warheads, Tehran demonstrated that it could do more in the future.

In fact, Iran and Israel both moderated their retaliatory attacks to preclude serious action by the other. Which leaves the status of mutual deterrence unclear. Complained the Daily Telegraph’s Jake Wallis Simons: “If the price for such a major assault is one ‘limited’ jab at an air base, then that is extremely favourable [sic] to Iran.”

More fantastic is the claim that the U.S. failed to deter Russia. Despite Washington’s deep involvement in a proxy war against Moscow, the latter has taken no military action against the U.S.—even after American officials claimed responsibility for sinking the Moskva, Russia’s Black Sea fleet flagship, and killing Russian generals. To that can be added ongoing arms transfers responsible for the deaths of thousands of Russian personnel.

So, too, for NATO countries. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has not challenged the alliance, even its coverage of the vulnerable Baltic members. Although NATO’s current members now disparage its deterrent value, warning that a victorious Russia might look westward, Putin does not appear to share this view. He sought to prevent Ukraine’s entry into the transatlantic alliance for a reason, the commitment of the U.S. and Europe to go to war on members’ behalf. This was the primary cause of the conflict, according to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg: Putin “went to war to prevent NATO, more NATO, close to his borders.” The latter evidently sees alliance membership as a deterrent.

The latest complaint is that Washington failed to deter Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Yet, apart from indistinct sanctions threats issued during the Russian military build-up, neither the U.S. nor Europe actively attempted to deter Moscow then or before.

First, neither Washington nor NATO intervened when the Soviet Union crushed local uprisings and reform efforts outside the alliance—in Poland, East Germany, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. NATO later waged “out of area” wars against Yugoslavia and Libya, but not against Russia. The Budapest Memorandum was toothless, with the signatories’ remedy for an attack on Ukraine a promise to go to the UN Security Council.

Today, the U.S. and Europe’s primary deterrence mechanism is NATO membership. Rep. Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts and former Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming contended, “If the United States and its allies cannot prevent and punish war crimes right on NATO’s border, then enemies further afield, big and small, will be emboldened.” Nevertheless, being next to an alliance is not the same as being in an alliance. That is why Kiev wants to join. And is why the allies still refuse to make good on membership commitments from NATO’s 2008 Bucharest summit. No one wants to go to war over Ukraine.

If war erupts in the Taiwan Strait, deterrence by the U.S. will be said to have failed. “Strategic ambiguity” is supposed to present just enough certainty to scare Beijing away from attacking the island state while leaving enough uncertainty to scare Taipei away from provoking war by declaring independence.

Some American policymakers appear to believe that the mere threat of military action is sufficient to deter Beijing. For instance, Leon Panetta, who served in both the Clinton and Obama administrations, declared: “I think frankly if China understands that we’re serious about that, China’s not going to do that. They may be a lot of things, they’re not dumb.” Alas, that sentiment reflects the balance of power a couple decades ago, not today. Even those who view war as possible may underestimate the likely cost of combat and the strength of public support.

In any case, the threat of war might not be sufficient to deter Beijing. For the PRC the issue is essential, if not existential; for the U.S. it is peripheral. China would be fighting off its coast with the mainland as a massive resource. America would be fighting several thousand miles from home dependent on allies which might choose not to join the fight. Nationalism ensures Chinese popular backing over Taiwan, while public support would be much thinner and more fragile in the U.S.

Many of the claims of failed deterrence reflect the belief that victory or at least steadfastness in other, usually modest fights of modest importance, will prevent major powers from acting to advance important if not vital objectives. The assumption seems to be that America must be constantly at war to prevent constant war.

Yet this contention makes little sense. Recent examples include Obama’s failure to bomb Syria over its alleged violation of his “red line” on use of chemical weapons and President Joe Biden’s failure to maintain troops in Afghanistan (exacerbated by their chaotic exit). Both cases have been cited as encouraging Putin to invade Ukraine and Chinese President Xi Jinping to swallow Taiwan.

It beggars belief that either Moscow or Beijing would treat Washington’s willingness to fight war-ravaged Syria or the Medieval Taliban as relevant to U.S. willingness to confront states with significant conventional forces as well as nuclear weapons. Indeed, even hawkish American policymakers who favored endless war in Afghanistan and Syria have not backed war against Russia. (In practice, Moscow and Beijing probably would prefer the U.S. to be bogged down militarily in the Mideast and South Asia.)

Moreover, critics rarely detail what actions following Russia’s 2008 and 2014 military interventions they believe would have deterred Putin. Sanctions have subsequently proved ineffective and additional military aid would not have enabled Georgia or a much weaker Ukraine to defeat Russia. Indeed, earlier and heavier military support for Ukraine, which famously took NATO into Ukraine rather than Ukraine into NATO, might have accelerated Putin’s invasion.

The most important indirect deterrence claim is that the U.S. must underwrite Ukraine, else China will decide to attack Taiwan. This argument is advanced without any evidence. Aggression, like politics, is typically local. Most Chinese desire reunification, but even the Chinese Communist Party is wary of war. Events on the island, including whether Taiwan is perceived as moving toward independence, are likely to be determinative.

Moreover, Ukraine is a useless precedent for Taiwan. Supplying an island off China’s coast would be much more difficult than aiding Kiev. Nor does the support of European governments for Ukraine suggest that they would do the same for Taiwan, since China does not threaten them militarily and is more important to them economically. Anyway, those who today link Ukraine and Taiwan are advocating American military intervention in the latter. Sending money to Kiev is not equivalent to waging conventional and perhaps nuclear war on behalf of Taipei. Indeed, Johns Hopkins’s Hal Brands warns that staying out of Ukraine may “have convinced Beijing that the United States just won’t fight a conventional war against a nuclear-armed rival.”

America has done a good job deterring attack, made easy by its favorable geographic position. It is not Washington’s job to stop military action against every other nation. The U.S. should act only when the interests involved are serious, even vital, for America and important enough to risk war. Protecting the American people from foreign harm should remain Washington’s highest duty.

Was There a Failed Coup Against Zelensky?

Was There a Failed Coup Against Zelensky?

Western media have largely ignored the alleged assassination attempt, but the available details suggest all is not well in Kiev.

Had there been an attempt on the life of President Joe Biden or Russia’s President Vladimir Putin or their counterparts in France or the UK, there would, deservedly, have been endless coverage. But the May 7 attempted assassination of Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky by high ranking Ukrainian officers elicited only the necessary reporting and a shocking dearth of investigation.

That the assassins were recruited by Russia and that the assassination “was supposed to be a gift to Putin before [his] inauguration” has been asserted, without evidence, by Ukraine’s State Security Service, the SBU. What is known is that two colonels in Ukraine’s State Protection Service, the Ukrainian equivalent to the U.S. Secret Service, have been charged with treason and arrested. One of them faces the additional charge of “aiding in the preparation of a terrorist act.”

Part of their assignment was reportedly to identify “operatives among the military close to the protection of the president, who could take the head of state hostage and later kill him,” according to the SBU. Vasyl Maliuk, head of the SBU, and General Kyrylo Budanov, chief of the GUR, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, are also reported to have been targets.

The exact details of the plot are murky, and it is unclear which parts applied to Zelensky and which to Budanov. One agent was “tasked with surveilling the president’s movements and relaying this information.” Once the high level targets’ location was known there was to be a series of strikes to first kill them and then obliterate the evidence. A fatal missile strike would be followed by a drone strike to kill anyone who was still alive, and then by another missile to destroy traces of the drone.

On May 10, Zelensky published a decree dismissing Serhii Rud, the chief of the State Protection Service. Rud has not been accused of any involvement, but he is reported to be close to Colonel Andrei Guk, who has now been identified as one of the colonels who has been arrested.

The claim offered without evidence that Russia was involved in the assassination attempt cannot be dismissed. But it is odd that Russia would need help locating Zelensky, who very publicly travels abroad and to the front lines and even, at times, publishes selfies at the front. It may also be odd that Russia, which can hit precision targets all over Ukraine, would need to deliver drones to Ukrainian agents when they have the capacity to launch them from farther away.

The unproven Russian involvement may be real, or it may be an attempt to recast an embarrassing internal coup as a Russian plot. Either way, it does not bode well for Ukraine.

If Russia was running the operation, then it reveals a capacity for extensive Russian infiltration of the highest levels of the Ukrainian military and security. If Russia was not running the operation, then it reveals dissatisfaction, dissent and disorder in the Ukrainian military.

Whether Russia was paying them or they were operating independently, the attempted assassination exposes internal weakness and disorder in Kiev.

Russian forces are breaking through Ukrainian lines across the front in the north and the east, and depleted and exhausted Ukrainian forces are frequently facing defeat and occasionally retreating and refusing orders to fight. Zelensky has demonstrated no willingness to negotiate and seemingly has left himself no escape route from his promise to win back all of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, nor from his decree banning negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. And now there has been the first known attempt by high ranking Ukrainian officials to assassinate the Ukrainian President.

Whether Russia was behind the plot—as Ukraine alleges—or whether it was an independent, internal Ukrainian coup attempt, it hints that not all is well in Kiev. No wonder the Western media chose not to shine a bright spotlight on it.
