CNN Anchor Asks Potential Vice President Dr. Ben Carson if He Will Accept 2024 Election Results and His Response is Perfect (VIDEO)

Dr. Ben Carson joined CNN recently and discussed Trump’s rally in the Bronx, the economic disaster under Biden, and whether he will accept the 2024 election results.

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, Carson was one of seven people vetted by the Trump campaign as a potential Vice President pick for Trump.

Midway through his interview, CNN anchor Laura Coates asked Dr. Carson, ” Will you accept the results of the 2024 election regardless of who wins?”

Carson responded “I will accept the results if it’s done in a fair and transparent way.”

Coates followed up by asking, “Do you have reason to doubt it would be done in a fair and transparent way?”

“Well, let me put it this way: in the 2020 election, there were a lot of irregularities. I think everybody on both sides should be aware of that and should be working to satisfy that.

Coates responded that there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud during the 2020 election.

Carson rebutted, “The fact there are so many people who are skeptical should raise questions for us, the fact that a country like France outlawed general mail-in balloting in 1975 because they said there were too many opportunities for mischief.”

The former HUD Secretary under the Trump administration concluded, “I think having an election season rather than an election day is a mistake.”

This isn’t the first time Carson has called for election integrity.

In April of 2021, Carson, in an interview with Fox News’ Neil Cavuto, shared that the 2020 election needs a thorough investigation.

As the Gateway Pundit previously reported, in an interview with News 12 New York, Trump mentioned Carson as a potential VP pick and shared, “You could take people like Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, or J.D. Vance. I mean, there’s so many. Elise is doing a fantastic job.”

Ben Carson, who became a household name after being the first neurosurgeon to separate conjoined twins, ran for President in 2016 but later suspended his campaign and endorsed Trump.

In the first nine months of 2015, Carson outraised all the Republican presidential nominees in small-dollar donors.

Carson also hails from Michigan, a swing state much needed for Trump in 2024.

Joe Biden Drones on About Protecting ‘Democracy’ in Normandy Speech and it Goes Horribly Wrong (VIDEO)

Joe Biden on Friday delivered a speech on ‘protecting democracy’ and the legacy of Pointe du Hoc in Normandy, France.

Biden, who had his main political rival Donald Trump arrested, is lecturing the world on protecting democracy.

“As we gather here today, it’s not just to honor those who showed such remarkable bravery that day June 6, 1944,” Biden said standing next to the Pointe du Hoc monument. “It’s to listen to the echo of their voices. To hear them. Because they are summoning us. They’re asking us what will we do. They’re not asking us to scale these cliffs. They’re asking us to stay true to what America stands for.”

Joe Biden struggled to make it through his remarks.

Biden droned on about ‘democracy’ and it went horribly wrong.

“We talk about democracy … we don’t talk about is how hard it is, how many ways we’re asked to walk away, how many instincts are to walk away, the most natural instinct is to walk away…” Biden said.

BIG MOUTH STRIKES AGAIN: Globalist Pope Francis Remains Under Heavy Criticism Over His Foul Mouth and ‘Homophobic Slurs’

Argentine Pope Francis, the Globalist, makes every effort to be popular among liberals, and to be perceived as ‘politically correct’ – even if it means making Catholic dogma and doctrine take the back seat.

But, as I wrote before, nothing will ever be enough for these leftist groups.

Not only that, but Francis is an elderly man from a much different generation, and also a powerful political figure who is in love with his own voice, with a need to speak even when silence would be the best answer.

Now, in a very ironic turn of events, the Globalist Pope sees himself surrounded by fierce criticism from the very groups he always worked so hard to please and appease.

Reuters reported:

“Francis was quoted by Italian media as using the Italian term ‘frociaggine’, roughly translating as […] ‘faggotry’, in a closed-door May 20 meeting with Italian bishops. The Vatican issued an apology, but after that, other Italian reports attributed more gay slurs to the pope, as well as chauvinist language associating women with gossip, in a separate meeting with Roman priests.”

Friends of the pontiff have taken to the press to speak ‘off the record’ in his support.

At the same time, sympathetic analysts say this ‘PR disaster’ ‘should not obscure his record as a reforming, LGBT-friendly pope’.

“However, some say the 87-year-old’s gaffe fits into a pattern of papal missteps that undermine his authority and raise questions about his convictions and the reform path he has in mind for the Church.

[…] Francis has a reputation for having a salty tongue, especially in private, so while the reported anti-gay slurs shocked many, they did not seem out of character to people who know him.

‘I’m obviously not justifying his use of an offensive term … but it is normal for him in private to speak very, very directly’, papal biographer Austen Ivereigh said. ‘He doesn’t talk like a politician’.”

There’s even an ‘unnamed longtime gay friend of the Pope’ trying to help him in the midst of this ‘off the records deluge’, and say that Francis has always known he has a problem with foul language, calls himself a ‘bocon’, which means ‘big mouth’ in Spanish – someone who can’t keep from speaking.

“The same source said Francis had come ‘a long way in terms of openness towards LGBT rights’ for a man of his generation, noting he grew up in a very conservative family that considered divorcees – let alone gay people – social pariahs.”

But still, the pope’s profanity has left many offended, which is the standard intellectual stance of these groups, anyway.

Francis’ most damning ‘gaffe’ came as he discussed with bishops the question of gay candidates for priesthood.

The issue is sensitive and urgent for the Italian Catholic Church, given the an active gay ‘subculture’ in some of its seminaries.

WATCH: President Trump Announces $400 MILLION in Fundraising Since Guilty Verdict in New York Show Trial

The first guilty verdict in history in the first criminal trial against a President isn’t slowing Trump down.

Last night, President Trump told the crowd at his Arizona rally that he raised “almost $400 Million” in the week after the verdict in his “rigged trial.”

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg indicted Trump in April 2023 on 34 felony counts related to ‘hush payments’ he made to Stormy Daniels.

There was no crime, but the Democrats ratcheted up what would be a misdemeanor to a felony in order to bypass the statute of limitations, and Marxist Judge Juan Merchan helped to rig the trial for a guilty verdict.

Trump was accused of paying porn star Stormy Daniels, AKA Stephanie Clifford, ‘hush payments’ through his then-attorney Michael Cohen, who the media and prosecutors falsely labeled his “fixer,” in a scheme to silence her and stop the story about their alleged affair from being published in the National Enquirer.

The jury returned a verdict in Alvin Bragg’s lawfare ‘hush money’ trial on Thursday: Guilty on all 34 counts! In just hours following the verdict, Trump raised MORE THAN $34 MILLION for his campaign.

It was later revealed that Trump raised $52.8 million in the 24 hours after he was found guilty.

BREAKING: Trump RAISED $52.8M IN 24 HOURS Following Guilty Verdicts in Marxist Judge Juan Merchan’s Marxist New York City Show Trial

Additionally, The Gateway Pundit reported yesterday on new polling data that shows Trump continuing to lead Biden following the sham trial and guilty verdict.

Trump’s sentencing was set for July 11, but on November 5, the American people are set to sentence Trump to four years starting on January 20.

While delivering remarks on Thursday in Arizona, President Trump gave an update on his massive fundraising numbers since the guilty verdict, saying, “More campaign funds were given to this campaign than any campaign they think in history.”

Watch below:

Trump: I just went through a rigged trial in New York with a highly conflicted, and I mean highly conflicted, judge, where there was no crime. It was made-up, fabricated stuff. They didn’t want to bring the case. They could have brought the case seven years ago. It’s only when you run for office they bring cases. But they would have done that seven years ago think not in the middle of my presidential campaign, where we’re beating Biden, by the way, by a lot. Did you see?

And by the way, right after the announcement of this, more campaign funds were given to this campaign than any campaign they think in history. almost $400 million, 400! Nobody’s ever seen it because they know it was rigged. They know it’s a corrupt system. They know all about it. But with your help, less than five months from now, and I’ll tell you what, we have to change the system. We have to straighten out what’s going on in these courts. We got a rigged deal going, this whole country, and we’ve got to do it. And those appellate courts have to step up and straighten things out or we’re not going to have a country any longer.

As California Faces Massive Deficit, Newsom Proposes Reducing Funding For Police, Prisons, And Public Safety

Governor Newsome/ X.com

In an irrational move that defies common sense, Governor Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., has proposed severe cuts to essential public safety budgets, targeting prisons and law enforcement.

This comes as California battles a huge budget deficit. Instead of addressing financial responsibility, Newsom is doubling down on his radical climate agenda, prioritizing so-called “equity” over the safety and well-being of Californians.

Fox News reports,

The California Democrat’s proposed budget, released in May, notes that “difficult decisions” are necessary to address the estimated $27.6 billion deficit, which is projected to continue for years to come. It includes a $97 million cut to trial court operations, $10 million to the Department of Justice’s Division of Law Enforcement and more than $80 million to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

A Newsom spokesperson initially told Fox News Digital that there were “no cuts to law enforcement.”

“The budget proposes numerous ways to make government more efficient and reduce costs for taxpayers, including cuts on inmate spending. Since Governor Newsom took office in 2019, the state has made record investments in law enforcement, including $1.1 billion to tackle crime, support police, and hold criminals accountable,” the spokesperson said.

Officials from the Department of Finance acknowledged, however, that the state’s proposed budget for Justice was reduced by 1.6%.

“What’s happening in California is just the greatest disrespect of taxpayer’s resources in the history of America,” Florida’s chief financial officer, Jimmy T. Patronis, told Fox News Digital. “They’re in a panic. They’re in a free fall. They’re looking for money to make up this enormous budget deficit they’ve got right now.”

The San Francisco Centre saw retailers such as Aldo, J.Crew, and Madewell close their stores this year alone. According to a report, major stores have been leaving the city and malls with vacancies in Northern California. Zara is expected to close by 2025, following Macy’s and The North Face.

According to the latest crime statistics, there have been 8,686 thefts in San Francisco since January 1, not including 1,962 burglaries and 2,298 motor vehicle thefts.

The $80 million cut from the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is intended to eliminate 4,600 beds across 13 prisons. Newsom also proposed slashing law enforcement training and cutting $4.4 million from county probation departments.

The California State Legislature, meanwhile, is pushing against some of the proposed cuts regarding public safety, particularly a $15 million decrease from the DOJ, Department of Finance deputy director for external affairs H.D. Palmer told Fox News Digital.

“These proposed reductions are unallocated reductions, meaning that it would be up to the department as to how they would be implemented,” Palmer said.

Legislators have until June 15 to approve the budget, which takes effect in July.

Rishi Sunak leaves D-Day Memorial early to campaign

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who recently advocated for a return to military conscription, has been criticized for leaving the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of D-Day early in order to be interviewed by ITV in the run-up to Britain’s July 4th General Election.

Sunak left Foreign Minister David Cameron in Normandy to attend the rest of the commemorations with world leaders such as President Emmanuel Macron of France, President Biden of the United States, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz of the FRG.

Reactions to Sunak’s early departure from the event were uniformly negative. Jack Hemming, a 102-year-old veteran of the Second World War who served in the Royal Air Force, stated that Sunak had “opted to put an election before the thousands who were killed.”

Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, attended all of the ceremonies in Normandy and called Sunak’s early departure a  “Gillian Duffy moment,” referencing a hot-mic incident during Gordon Brown’s premiership when the then-Prime Minister disparaged a woman for her concerns about immigration.

Sunak has since apologized for leaving the D-Day commemorations early to take part in a political interview.

Sunak’s absence can be juxtaposed with the presence of King Charles III, himself a veteran, who served in active duty in both the RAF and Royal Navy. The King and the Queen both participated in the ceremonies and spent time with veterans of the D-Day landings, before returning to Portsmouth to speak with veterans.

Indiana Congressman Jim Banks Calls on WNBA to Take Action to Protect Rookie Caitlin Clark from Attacks

Guest post by Joe Hoft at JoeHoft.com – republished with permission

Caitlin Clark, the NCAA basketball superstar, has received a rude welcome to the WNBA. Now one congressman is taking action.

We’ve reported multiple times about the attacks against Caitlin Clark in her WNBA games since joining the league this year.

Clark’s games at the WNBA are the most watched WNBA games on ESPN and ABC ever.

Clark is bringing an estimated $100 million to the league and this is how the women respond.

This play by the WNBA team in Jersey was not called a foul.

Never seen a savior of a league get treated like this https://t.co/TXNEd4umbl

— Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) May 18, 2024

This assault in another game was not called a penalty. The woman nearly knocked Clark’s head off.

I invested $100,000 into WNBA stocks just before Caitlin Clark was drafted, thinking she would take this eye sore of a stud league to the next level. 5 games into her career & I’m pulling my investments. This league is beyond saving. No foul calls on assault & battery. Cooked. pic.twitter.com/GhSygLTZXa

This past weekend, Clark was assaulted again on the court. This time during a game with the Chicago team in the WNBA.

Indiana congressman Jim Banks has had enough. He sent a letter to the WNBA requesting that the league take action.

Indiana U.S. Representative Jim Banks is calling on WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert to take action to protect Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark.

In a June 4 letter to Engelbert, Banks referenced Clark’s ability to increase viewership and attendance this season. The news of Banks’ letter to Engelbert was first reported by Outkick.

“Unfortunately, since joining the WNBA, Clark’s exceptionalism has been met with resentment and repeated attacks from fellow players,” Banks wrote.

Banks specifically mentioned the foul on Clark by the Chicago Sky’s Chennedy Carter, which was later upgraded to Flagrant 1. Carter shoulder-checked Clark as the Fever rookie was waiting for an inbound pass. Clark fell to the ground, and it was originally called an away-from-ball foul.

“During the Fever’s win over the Chicago Sky on Saturday, Chennedy Carter went out of her way to knock Clark to the floor while neither player had the ball,” said Banks, who is running against Democrat Valerie McCray to fill Mike Braun’s U.S. Senate seat. “Further, the excessive attack was visibly cheered on and supported by Carter’s teammate Angel Reese.”

Clark is the best thing to happen to the WNBA, but the women in the league assault her with regularity. What foolish women. This needs to stop.

Fox News Cameras Show the Real Impact of Biden’s Border Executive Order

After President Joe Biden issued an executive order to tighten illegal immigration at our southern border, Republicans criticized the language of the measure, arguing it would do next to nothing to stop the flood of migrants pouring over into the United States from all corners of the world.

That turned out to be inaccurate. Instead, it appears that the executive order has done absolutely nothing, full stop.

Don’t just ask me, though. Ask Bill Melugin, the national correspondent for Fox News whose on-the-scene reporting at the nation’s southern border has been an invaluable resource for those who don’t just want sugar-coated statistics about the border crisis spoon-fed to them by the Biden administration.

In a series of posts on Thursday, Melugin said there had been “zero impact” at the California border site he was covering, and he brought the receipts.

So, in case you’d missed it — what with the media chattering about one rigged trial that reached a verdict last week and another trial Biden’s Department of Justice appeared to wish it could have rigged starting this week — on Tuesday, the president announced he was temporarily shutting down asylum requests due to a heavy illegal immigrant influx, NBC News reported.

The order is part of Biden’s promise to shut down asylum seekers at the southern border if the number of encounters tops 2,500 a day.

Considering that millions of illegal immigrants have already crossed the border under Biden’s watch, this isn’t just closing the barn door after the horse has left the stable, this is closing it when he’s already galloped four states over.

Administration officials said Tuesday that “individuals who cross the southern border unlawfully or without authorization will generally be ineligible for asylum, absent exceptionally compelling circumstances, unless they are accepted by the proclamation,” and that those who don’t meet the “credible fear” threshold for applying for asylum will be removed “in a matter of days, if not hours.”

Again, this is what they should have been doing in the first place, so no plaudits for suddenly realizing it’s an issue — and just five months out from the election. Imagine that!

And, as it turns out, the effect on border crossings seems to be a solid zero, as Melugin noted on X.

“Mass illegal crossing of approximately 200 from around the world just happened here in Jacumba, CA,” he posted Thursday, along with a series of photos that Biden and his retinue definitely don’t want voters to see.

“Day number two of Biden’s executive order – & we see zero impact here at the border. Large groups continue to cross without fear here in San Diego sector,” Melugin said.

BREAKING: Mass illegal crossing of approximately 200 from around the world just happened here in Jacumba, CA. Day number two of Biden’s executive order – & we see zero impact here at the border. Large groups continue to cross without fear here in San Diego sector. pic.twitter.com/iQiqvoIxyb

— Bill Melugin (@BillMelugin_) June 6, 2024

Also, as we’ve come to expect, these weren’t just Mexicans or Guatemalans taking a quick hop over the border.

“Just talked to some of them. Countries include China, Mauritania, India, Peru, & many others,” Melugin said in a subsequent post:

More: pic.twitter.com/3ogHgmD6B1

— Bill Melugin (@BillMelugin_) June 6, 2024

Another “mass crossing” he and his team witnessed included “many Egyptians, Chinese, & Turkish,” he said in a post:

NEW: We just witnessed yet another mass illegal crossing into Jacumba, CA. It’s been crazy busy in San Diego sector this morning. This group has many Egyptians, Chinese, & Turkish. Meanwhile, we have a camera crew in San Diego where BP is mass releasing migrants to city streets. pic.twitter.com/3fEZpv5hdj

— Bill Melugin (@BillMelugin_) June 6, 2024

And, lo and behold, the Border Patrol was apparently “mass releasing migrants to city streets,” Melugin wrote.

Apparently, everyone has a credible fear of something. Who would have thunk it?

In a remote appearance on Fox News from the border, Melugin said there had been “no change whatsoever” since Biden issued the order.

“Again, there is no fear of this new executive order which bans asylum for most illegal crossers with certain exceptions,” Melugin said.

As he pointed out, “more than 70 percent of them are released,” and the ones Melugin talked to “are not here to claim asylum.”

As to the number of encounters by Border Patrol, that hadn’t slowed either, with Melugin citing reports that 4,000 crossings had taken place on Wednesday — the first day the order took effect.

In other words, this is every bit the farce that we’ve come to expect from this president.

What more does this man need to say or do to prove to Americans that he has no intention of enforcing border security?

Do the millions of people who have crossed into the United States illegally not speak for themselves?

Are we to believe that, once border crossings hit the magic 2,500 number, the administration is finally going to do something?

Of course not. This is a play-pretend president. He pretends to fix the problems he’s caused, and his chums in the establishment media pretend to believe him.

If only Democrats would just pretend to vote for him instead of actually casting a ballot for this impotent, senescent figurehead, maybe the problem would finally get solved.

End of Wall Street? Texas Stock Exchange to File SEC Paperwork – Report

Texas continues its rise to prominence when other states are falling short.

Plans are in motion for a new Dallas-based Texas Stock Exchange to officially launch in 2026, CNN reported.

The TXSE group will file with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission later this year with over 24 investors and $120 million in capital. Chairman and CEO of TXSE James Lee posted on his Linkedin that investors will include names like BlackRock and Citadel Securities.

TXSE is expected to have the most capital at launch of any exchange to file with the SEC, according to CNN and Lee’s post.

According to the TXSE website, “Texas and the other states in the southeast quadrant of the U.S. lead the nation in economic expansion and population growth, making Texas the clear choice for the establishment of a new national securities exchange. For decades, Texas has been the nation’s leader in attracting business relocations and expansions. It’s home to more Fortune 500 companies than any other state and more than 5,200 private equity-sponsored companies, many of which are preparing to access the public markets. In addition, there are more than 1,500 publicly traded companies throughout the region.”

While there is plenty to speculate on regarding markets, investments and the potential for private equity companies to go public, there is a notable trend with TXSE’s creation that’s been playing out now for several years: money leaving blue states and going to red states.

It’s not exactly a well-kept secret that New York has not been the most welcoming or pro-business state in recent memory.

From 2020 to 2023, New York lost nearly $1 trillion in asset management companies as 158 companies moved out of the state.

The Tax Foundation’s “2024 State Business Tax Climate Index” ranked New York 49th for its tax system, only beating New Jersey.

New York City’s vacant storefronts have nearly doubled since the COVID-19 pandemic.

New York Mayor Eric Adams seemed more occupied with providing free food, free housing and pre-paid debit cards to illegal aliens than he is with fighting the state’s precipitous downfall.

The city had plans in motion to give illegals spending money via cash cards in March as they threw out free food they didn’t want.

The streets aren’t welcoming, either. Whether you’re a regular New Yorker at church or a famous actor like Steve Buscemi, it’s not out of the ordinary to be the victim of a vicious assault while having the audacity to keep to yourself.

While the regular person will surely make an exodus to greener pastures, companies are taking note as Texas now has more Fortune 500 companies than any other state, according to a July 2023 report by Texas Real Estate Source.

While we shouldn’t kid ourselves about TXSE’s creation, as there are around 13 stock exchanges in the country, it does fit well in the broader trend playing out.

Wall Street is a hallmark of New York as the financial heartbeat of the country.

With its prosperity at stake, Texas’ move should motivate the state to change its tune and flourish once more.

Will the Olympics Committee Play Fair With Israeli Swimmers?

Image: Makaristos, Wikimedia Commons

By Susan Crabtree
Real Clear Wire

After an impressive close second-place finish in the women’s 400-meter medley at the World Aquatics Championships in Qatar earlier this year, Israeli swimmer Anastasia Gorbenko acknowledged the emotional weight of representing her country amid global turmoil over the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas and Israel’s counter-offensive in Gaza.

“I’m just so happy to be here and represent my country in this hard time. Being here with the Israeli flag means a lot to me and to my country, so that’s the best I can do,” Gorbenko, whose parents are from Ukraine but was born and raised in Israel, said in an interview that was amplified to the crowd.

Some boos rained down from the crowd when Gorbenko crossed the finish line, but louder heckling began at the swimmer’s first mention of Israel in the interview. Others in the crowd quickly tried to drown out the jeers and boos with applause and cheers. It was the first time Gorbenko has medaled in the World Championships in the 400-meter medley, though she’s been a strong competitor in the past, finishing the 2021 World Championships with a gold in both the 50-meter breaststroke and the 100-meter medley.

The meet’s organizers provided more security for the medal ceremony and the victory walk, and the crowd wasn’t allowed as close to the ceremony as usual. The award presentation went off without a hitch, but the anti-Israel message was delivered, making international headlines on CNN, the Associated Press, Reuters, and numerous other news outlets.

The incident came as no surprise to parents and supporters of the Israeli Olympic swimming team, who had spent months urging the World Aquatics Federation to relocate the February meet planned for Doha to a more neutral location.

They argued that failing to do so would risk the Israeli team’s security and subject the young athletes to a predictable intimidation campaign that could impact their performances. Nearly all of those who didn’t attend were training on U.S. college campuses, including the University of California at Berkeley, Northwestern University, and Stanford University, where intense antisemitic protests have been roiling campuses for months, with many Jewish students expressing outrage and fear over being targeted for their faith and Jewish and Israeli heritage.

But the federation didn’t budge and moved forward with the World Championship in Doha as planned.

That event typically would have determined who qualifies for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Gorbenko obviously qualified, and several others on the team are well positioned to make the cut. But those supporting the Israeli team argue that the athletes who decided to sit out the Doha meet are no longer operating on a level playing field with their peers in other countries.

Even the three Israeli women’s team members who decided to compete in Doha took precautions by traveling with extra security and covering any logos mentioning Israel on their clothing and gear.

Now, some of the team’s supporters are pressing the International Olympic Committee and the World Aquatics Federation to provide more Olympic qualifying opportunities for the Israel athletes who decided to stay home and not risk competing in Doha.

Those supporting the Israeli swim team are pressing the federation for answers – Why should the athletes who decided not to attend the Doha event out of concern for their safety and ability to compete at their highest performance levels while under duress be punished when there’s such an easy fix?

The IOC and World Aquatics could easily allow make-up qualifying opportunities during the team trials in Netanya, Israel, scheduled this week from June 5-8, or at the European Championships in Belgrade June 10-23, advocates of the accommodation argue. Adding time trials, which are routinely conducted in connection with major meets, wouldn’t require extra costs or logistical issues.

Proponents argue that any qualifying Israeli relay could easily be added to the roster as a 17th team, and the athletes could swim in an unused lane in each of the added preliminary heats during the Olympics.

“I urgently request the IOC allow the Israel team to implement time-trials during their own Olympic trials in Netanya [this week] – where they can try to qualify for three additional relay events,” said Eric Spitz, a Jewish tech and sports businessman whose daughter is a dual citizen of Israel and the United States and an Israeli women’s swim team member. “This would allow Israeli athletes who could not compete safely in Doha a fair chance to chase their Olympic dreams.”

In his letter to the IOC, Spitz also referenced the 1972 Olympics massacre that occurred in Munich’s Olympic Village more than a half-century ago. Attackers affiliated with the Palestine Liberation Organization infiltrated Munich’s Olympic Village and carried out the attack, which would eventually leave 11 Israeli athletes dead, along with a West German policeman and five of the eight assailants.

After the death of his Olympic teammates, legendary swimmer Mark Spitz (no relation to Eric Spitz), who won seven gold medals and set seven world records at the 1972 Munich games, was forced to flee Germany in haste, hidden under a blanket and fearing for his life.

During a 2022 event in Tel Aviv, IOC President Thomas Bach demonstrated a keen awareness of Jewish athletes’ security concerns. During a 2022 event in Tel Aviv, he apologized for waiting 50 years to commemorate the Israeli victims of the Munich Massacre “in a dignified way,” labeling the event one of the “darkest days in Olympic history.”

Earlier this year, Bach also acknowledged the need for “special measures” to be taken to protect Israeli athletes, given the “heinous attack” on the Israeli team in 1972.

“The 1972 Munich Olympics serve as a tragic reminder of what happens when Olympic values are compromised, so let us not repeat those mistakes,” Eric Spitz wrote in his letter, addressed to IOC members.

The IOC declined to comment on whether it would provide more qualifying opportunities for the Israeli swimmers and suggested to RealClearPolitics that World Aquatics would be better suited to respond to questions about the need for more qualifying times for relays. World Aquatics did not provide a response to RCP’s repeated inquiries.

Deciding not to move the World Championship out of Qatar rankled advocates for fair treatment of Jewish and Israeli athletes in all sports. The country has recently tried to burnish its image, hosting the World Cup in 2022 despite an avalanche of criticism from human rights groups, but the comments of its minister of foreign affairs blaming Israel for the Oct. 7 assault drew intense international condemnation.

Other efforts to discriminate against or treat Jewish or Israeli athletes differently this year have sparked international controversy. The International Ice Hockey Federation earlier this year banned Israeli athletes from international competitions as a way to protect their security but then abruptly reversed that decision after a fierce backlash.

The Israeli hockey team won the silver medal last year in its division. After the Oct. 7 attacks, the IIHF decided to move a portion of a competition, originally to be held in Israel, to Bulgaria. But the move to ban Israeli hockey players from all international competition did not sit well with the National Hockey League, which expressed “significant concerns” about the decision.

FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, in mid-May postponed a decision on whether to temporarily suspend Israel over its offensive in Gaza and the West Bank, saying it would seek legal advice before considering a request by the Palestinian Football Association to expel the Israeli team. The motion called for Israel’s suspension over what it characterized as “international law violations committed by the Israeli occupation in Palestine, particularly in Gaza.”

Iran made a similar request in February to bar Israel’s national and club teams from competing in international play. Palestine Football Association Jibril Rajoub formally submitted the request, urging FIFA to “stand on the right side of history.” But Rajoub is hardly an ideal spokesman for the cause, as David May, research manager for Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, points out in a recent article.

Rajoub earned a life sentence from Israel in 1970 for throwing a grenade at an Israeli military truck – though Jerusalem released him 15 years later in a prisoner exchange. Rajoub has continued the open public threats, declaring in 2013 that he would drop a nuclear bomb on Israel if given the opportunity.

“Intimidation and harassment of Israeli athletes, sadly, is nothing new,” May told RealClearPolitics in an interview. “While young Israelis face the greatest competitors in the world, they must also contend with hostile venues.”

“Fortunately for Anastasia, she was wearing earplugs, which helped drown out the jeers as she earned the silver medal, but the hostile, inhospitable environment added for her another layer of adversity,” he argued. “Qatar – and any other prospective host – should ensure that all athletes can compete fairly. Ensuring fair play is the bare minimum for hosting athletic events, which should bring people together, not serve as stages for discrimination and hostility.”

The IOC and World Aquatics is obligated, May said, to provide Israeli swimmers with opportunities to qualify “that don’t require them to travel to one of the main patrons of Hamas, a terrorist group committed to Israel’s destruction.”

Spitz argues it’s only fair to allow the Israeli swimmers, including his daughter, who sat out the Doha meet, a chance to qualify for the summer Olympic games at a location where she and others feel secure and can fully concentrate on their performances.

“[Anastasia] Gorbenko’s unfortunate experience is a testament to the resilience and spirit of Israeli athletes,” Spitz said. “It also serves as vindication for the decision of those athletes who declined to attend.”

“The IOC must step up and show the courage to do what is right,” Spitz implored. “You have the responsibility and the power to make a decision that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all athletes.”
