Failed Trump Assassin Was a Registered Republican — but Donated to Democrat Organizations

The man who attempted, and failed, to assassinate former President Donald Trump was a registered Republican — but donated to Democrat organizations.

The FBI has identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. He was shot and killed by the Secret Service after shooting Trump in the ear, fatally shooting a rally attendee, and critically injuring two others in the crowd.

According to the Voter Status Record on the Department of State website, he was born on September 20, 2003, and is a registered Republican.

Due to his age, Crooks would not have been eligible to vote in the 2020 election.

Though he is registered as a Republican, it does not mean he was.

Many liberals registered to vote as Republicans during the primaries to throw support behind Nikki Haley to sabotage Trump. Pennsylvania is a closed primary state, meaning that independents and Democrats are not eligible to vote for the Republican nominee unless they switch parties.

Crooks made several small donations to ActBlue and the Democrat National Committee.

Luke Rosiak of the Daily Wire reports, “The 20-year old male lives with his mother, who is handicapped and often clings to her husband to walk, they said. The family keeps to themselves. The mother was sitting in the street among evidence tonight, they said. Records suggest he registered to vote as a Republican.”

Despite the voter registration, he donated $15 to a Democrat group dedicated to “defending democracy” on Biden’s inauguration day. Both of his parents are counselors.

Second Eyewitness at Trump’s Rally Comes Forward and Tells CBS He Warned Officers of Shooter Crawling on Roof (VIDEO)

A witness to the shooting at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, told CBS News he saw a shooter on a nearby roof and warned police before any shots were fired at Trump.

The CBS reporter asked the Trump supporter, “Take me back. What were you doing before the shooting happened?”

The Trump rallygoer shared, “I was just standing there like everyone else, just waiting for Trump. And as Trump started, I noticed two officers looking for something or somebody.”

The witness added, “So I was looking around myself and seen a guy on top of one of the buildings go in between one building to the next and went and told the officer he was up there.”

“When I went back to my spot, I heard that people could still see the shooter from where they were standing, so I checked that out and went back to tell the officer if he came over there, he could see them, and when I turned my back is when the shots started,” added the eyewitness.

President Trump was shot in the ear earlier Saturday at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

A Trump supporter was fatally shot and two others were critically injured.

In an appalling breach of security, the gunman climbed on a roof nearby and shot at Trump from an elevated position.

Secret Service rushed Trump on stage as he pumped his fist in the air.

“Fight! Fight! Fight!” Trump shouted as he was whisked away and taken to a medical facility in an ambulance.

President Trump released a statement on Truth Social Saturday evening.

“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!” Trump said on Truth Social.

Trump’s Courage Rises Above the Fray

Trump’s Courage Rises Above the Fray

The media’s rhetoric and the administration’s security negligence may have caused the moment, but Trump carried it.

An assassin can kill a president, but cowardice is what kills a movement. President Donald Trump didn’t give his would-be murderer what the gunman wanted. Trump survived the shots, then he did something profound—he waved back the Secret Service agents shielding him, freeing his bloodied face up from the scrum, and, with a look of defiance, raised his fist and said, “Fight!”

He shouldn’t have done it, according to the rules of presidential security. And the Secret Service were obviously torn between the urgency of covering the former president and getting him to safety, and allowing him to do what he was determined to do. They parted just far enough for Trump to show his face and pump his fist. His life and theirs were at risk.

But the risk had to be taken. The United States can’t be led by a coward or by someone who looks like one under fire. Trump knew in a split second what a leader had to do in that situation. He had to show courage. Morale is a nation’s blood. Trump refused to let the assassin shed it, even as his own wounds bled.

The assassin’s bullets took the life of at least one member of the audience before the murderer himself was put down. Leaders across the political spectrum wasted no time in denouncing the political violence. News of the shooting broke minutes before 6:30 p.m. EDT. At 6:46 p.m., Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose independent bid for the White House this year poses complications for Trump and President Joe Biden alike, called for peace and prayer from Trump. At 7:01 p.m., Bernie Sanders made a similar statement on X, formerly Twitter. Further statements followed from Liz Cheney at 7:18 p.m. and former president George W. Bush at 7:22.

The exception to this rapid response was President Biden, who put out an anodyne comment at 7:58 p.m. He then gave a press conference in which he declined to say whether this was an attempted assassination.

“I don’t know enough to—I have an opinion, but I don’t have any facts,” the president stammered.

No excuse is acceptable here: this was not a leader cautiously awaiting the facts before making a claim. Biden may not have had much information to provide the public, but nothing prevented him from speaking up to express sympathy more than an hour earlier. The president was not in command of the situation. At a time when the country needed reassurance from figures of authority—and when Biden himself must reassure his party that he’s capable of serving as its nominee—the president was conspicuous only by his absence. He might as well have been off reading My Pet Goat.

Caution is in order when such shocking news breaks quickly. But the immediate response from some of the nation’s most biggest news outlets wasn’t cautious; it was unserious. An early Washington Post headline already subject to ridicule on Twitter by 6:33 p.m. declared “Trump taken away after loud noises at rally.” Minutes earlier, a CNN headline had announced, “Secret Service rushes Trump off stage after he falls at rally.” Reason magazine’s Billy Binion tweeted that “using cautious phrasing before all the information is known is good, actually.” Yes, it is, but “loud noises” and “Trump…falls at rally” plumb depths of journalistic malpractice unfathomed even by such earlier CNN and Washington Post absurdities as “Fiery but mostly peaceful protests” and “austere religious scholar.” The “cautious” way to report the story would be to refer to “apparent” or “possible” shots or an assassination attempt. Many phrases could have been appropriate, but not “loud noises” or “falls at rally.”

Critics of the mainstream media argue that it bears responsibility for the attempt on Trump’s life, with the New Republic’s recent cover depicting Trump as Hitler a damning example of extreme media framing that could inspire political violence. The inflammatory rhetoric of Democrats and liberals outside of politics and the media is also being examined in a new light. When Biden says it’s time to put a “bull’s eye” on Trump, what might that mean to a disturbed individual who believes the apocalyptic hype he reads in the Atlantic or the New Republic? But conservatives and other critics of liberal media and the Democrats should not adopt their enemies’ arguments, unless they believe that right-wing media are responsible for murders committed by right-wing extremists. Ordinary people who read the New Republic or watch Fox News don’t go on killing sprees, and it’s stupid to imagine that the kind of person who does shoot at presidential candidates gets his primary motivation from magazine covers or from anyone’s use of “bull’s eye” as a metaphor.

What all the crackpot rhetoric about Trump as a “fascist” or the “end of democracy” does contribute to is a dangerous misplaced assessment of threats. As of this writing, little is known about Trump’s would-be killer, identified by the New York Post as Thomas Matthew Crooks, but it will come as no surprise if the assassin has links to far left or “Antifa” groups. Quite apart from any involvement they might have in the attempt on Trump’s life, these groups are violent and terroristic in their tactics. Yet the threat these radical leftists pose has been overlooked by a media that also sees itself as fighting “fascism” and sees enemies only on the right. The media and the federal government, especially under Democrats like Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and now Joe Biden, imagines that the right is teeming with extremists and that left-wing violence is merely defensive—protests and protesters who justly oppose the real right-wing threat but might get a little carried away while doing so. Hence “fiery but mostly peaceful protests.”

America, however, has a long history of left-wing bloodshed, which continues to this day in the form of Antifa activism. The man who tried to murder President Trump may yet prove to be a lone gunman. But if he has connections to the self-styled revolutionary or violently “anti-fascist” left, this will be a threat that was long allowed to grow into a deadly danger by Trump’s critics. While crying wolf about Trump, the media and partisan Democrats encouraged complacency about violence against Trump and Trump supporters, like those murdered in Saturday’s attack.

Complacency or outright negligence on the part of the Biden administration continues to put lives in danger from political violence. Democrats contemplated removing Trump’s Secret Service protection after his convictions in New York, and the Biden administration has been stinting in the security it provides to the president’s rivals. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had no Secret Service protection at all on the day Trump was almost killed. Biden’s rhetoric is bad enough, though short of inciting murder. His actions are worse, and may yet cost an opponent his life. Trump lives and is unbowed, but blood has already been spilled as a predictable result of deficient leadership.

This article has been updated with the name of the would-be assassin.

The U.S. Secret Service is set to brief the GOP Oversight Committee following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The news was announced by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) on social media, stating that the committee had been informed of the incident and would hold an emergency hearing as soon as possible.

“Secret Service has responded to GOP Oversight and will be briefing us ASAP. We have also notified Secret Service that we will be holding an emergency hearing ASAP to uncover what transpired at President Trump’s rally. The Secret Service Director is being called to testify. Date will be announced soon,” Anna Paulina Luna wrote on X.

The Gateway Pundit previously reported that the shooter was in easy view of Trump from the roof of a nearby structure. This is a location that the Secret Service would have investigated and controlled access to prior to the event, again making it suspicious that this event happened.

Witnesses claim they alerted the Secret Service to a man on the roof with a rifle and they did nothing until the assassination started.

THEY WANT HIM DEAD: Just Three Months Ago Democrats Introduced a Resolution to Strip Trump of His Secret Protection

Democrats want Trump dead.

Just three months ago House Democrats moved to strip President Trump of his Secret Service protection if he is convicted.

Democrat Rep. Bennie Thompson introduced a resolution that would terminate Trump’s Secret Service protection. The legislation dubbed the “Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable (DISGRACED) Former Protectees Act would apply to all Secret Service protectees convicted and sentenced under felony charges.

“The DISGRACED Former Protectees Act would terminate Secret Service protection for individuals who otherwise qualify for it upon sentencing following conviction for a Federal or State felony,” the announcement said.

“It is regrettable that it has come to this, but this previously unthought-of scenario could become our reality. Therefore, it is necessary for us to be prepared and update the law so the American people can be assured that protective status does not translate into special treatment —and that those who are sentenced to prison will indeed serve the time required of them,” Democrat Rep. Bennie Thompson said according to the Washington Times.

On Saturday President Trump was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania by a man positioned on a roof nearby.

Watch the Moment Counter Snipers Engaged the Attempted Trump Assassin

A video has emerged from the Pennsylvania Trump rally showing the moment that counter snipers engaged the person who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump.

The counter-snipers were positioned on a roof behind where Trump was speaking.

Check out this angle. Counter snipers see something and engage? #shooter #snipers pic.twitter.com/lD3J651SkJ

— Colagram (@coladoggxxx) July 14, 2024

One of the snipers appears to look up from his rifle as shots rang out. The counter-sniper then appears to engage and respond.

An eyewitness told the BBC that they could see the shooter crawling on another nearby roof and alerted police and the Secret Service before Trump was shot.

“He had a rifle,” the witness said. “We could clearly see him with a rifle. Absolutely. We’re pointing at them. The police are down there running around on the ground. We’re like, hey, man, this guy on the roof with a rifle. And the police were like, huh? What? You know, like they didn’t know what was going on, you know, we’re like, hey, right here on the roof, we can see him from right here. We see him, you know, he’s crawling!”

BREAKING: Eye-witness says he saw the suspect climb on top of a nearby structure outside of the event and notified the police who didn’t take action.

“The guy army crawled up the building 50 feet from us… he had a rifle.”

“He’s crawling! I’m thinking, why is Trump still… pic.twitter.com/imHWOvsQKm

— Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) July 13, 2024

The witness continued, “Next thing you know, I’m like, I’m thinking to myself, I’m like, why is Trump still speaking? Why have they not pulled him off the stage? I’m standing there pointing at him for, you know, two or three minutes. Secret Service is looking at us from the top of the barn. I’m pointing at that roof, just standing there like this. And next thing you know, five shots ring out.”

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger has confirmed that two people are dead, including the apparent shooter. The other is a man who was in the stands behind Trump.

Trump was shot in the ear and transported to a medical facility. He has since been released.

The shooter has not been formally identified at the time of publishing.

Tears, Prayers, and Resolve From the Scene of the Attempted Trump Assassination

Tears, Prayers, and Resolve From the Scene of the Attempted Trump Assassination

“He raised his fist and wants all of us to be strong, okay?”

Chaos in Butler, Pennsylvania. But not immediately. A pop, then the former President Donald Trump winces while looking to his right and reaching for his ear. Two more pops follow. Slightly behind Trump on the former president’s left, water seems to spray from a hydraulic lift. A flash from the muzzle of one of the snipers posted behind Trump and a chorus of screams prompted terrified onlookers to follow the former president’s lead and drop to the ground.

Another round of several overlapping pops rang out as more Secret Service agents dogpiled Trump. The next minute drags on for an eternity. The rally microphone picks up shouts between secret service members atop Trump: “Hold!” “On you!” “We ready?” “Shooter’s down!” “We’re clear!” The troop lifts the former president in the air, tightly surrounding him.

In duck and cover, the crowd waited for signs of life from the former president. The microphone then picks up what is arguably the most recognizable intonation in the world. “Let me get my shoes!” Trump commands four times. The right side of his face has two streaks of blood from ear to mouth. “Wait!” Trump says before the mic goes silent. Trump raises an indignant fist. Through a warrior’s scowl, he yells “fight!” three times. Rally goers leap up from their cover, raise their fists and unleash a torrent of howls that slide into a familiar Trump rally chant: “USA! USA! USA!”

Trump is whisked away.

With little cell service, the crowd is sure of the president’s will to fight, but unsure of Trump’s actual health. Tearful men, women, and children rub their eyes in disbelief. Most of the attendees passing by on their way to the exits had been waiting since the grounds opened at 1 p.m. to see the president speak. Trump had been speaking for less than 15 minutes before the shots rang out.

Ron Moose was one of those attendees. At well over six feet, and a few feet in front of me, Ron told The American Conservative, “The Secret Service all jumped. We’re talking within seconds they were all protecting [Trump].” Moose told TAC he had watched the snipers take aim and shoot at a building to the right of Trump beyond the grounds.

“We’re all so hopeful because Trump put his fist up. I mean, we’re hopeful. I’m hopeful he’s okay.”

By raising his fist, Trump “did two things,” in Moose’s calculation. “He said, ‘I’m okay,’ and ‘I’m here for the duration of the fight.’”

The crowd “went semi-wild,” Moose said.

One of the “Front Row Joes,” a group of men that can be spotted in the front of almost any Trump rally and have built a following of their own, told TAC what he saw.

“When he got up he had blood coming out of his ear,” the man, who wished to remain anonymous, said. When asked if he knew in the moment what was happening, the man said, “Yeah. I registered what was happening.”

“It’s just like a family member,” he said, choking up, “I don’t know how to explain it.”

“It don’t matter if you’re a Republican, Democrat, whatever. We don’t wish this on anybody. I don’t wish this on Joe Biden,” he concluded.

“I just can’t believe this happened,” Linda, 53, told TAC. “But, at the same time, with everything [Trump] is going through, you kind of can.” Linda said those two minutes “took years off my life”: “I was so scared, so afraid for Trump and for me and for everyone here. Then I was about to explode with joy when Trump got up and shook his fist.” Then reality set in. “My heart was pounding… I just cried. I just stayed down and cried.”

“When we did start to move, I knew I wasn’t alone,” Linda went on. “People were crying and hugging and praying. Trump and everybody gave everybody else strength to safely move along. That’s what people, the media, don’t understand about Trump and Trump supporters. We’re all a family, and we all look out after each other.”

Towards the exits, a mother finds her pre-teen looking son with a chiseled police officer. “My baby!” she yells as she engulfs her son in a hug. “Are you okay?” she asks, looking her son up and down for any bumps and bruises.

“I’m okay,” the tearful boy says. “Is he going to be okay?”

“I think so,” the mother replies. “He raised his fist and wants all of us to be strong, okay?”

Past where the security gates once were is about a quarter mile of knock-off Trump merch booths. Groups of Trump supporters, still drenched in salty sweat and tears, hugged and prayed. Others huddled next to a radio playing from one of the booths, awaiting Dan Bongino’s confirmation that the president was alive and well.

Donna, who drove to the Trump rally from Delaware, was praying as she listened to the broadcast. She told TAC she was “seated 20 rows back, right directly in front of [Trump]. I started hearing the gunshots, and my boyfriend threw me down and covered me. And I was just…” Donna swallows hard as the tears well up.

When she collects herself, Donna says, “I believe God chose [Trump]. And I believe that with all my heart. And that’s, you know, I kept telling everybody, God’s gonna protect him. And I believe that… I kind of think we’re in the end days. Some people don’t want to believe it, but I think we are dealing with a satanic cult.”

“I’m not crazy,” Donna says, as the tears start to flow. “That’s just how it feels.”

Fake News Media Downplays Trump Assassination Attempt, Claims He Fell Over After Being ‘Startled’ By ‘Loud Noises’

The fake news media was up to its usual dirty tricks on Saturday evening following the failed assassination attempt against Donald Trump.

After witnessing what was blatantly an attempt on the former president’s life with the sound of gunshots, many media outlets began by framing the attack as a mere “incident” in which even the most basic details were unclear.

USA Today claimed that Trump had been “startled” by “loud noises”:

Enemy. Of. The. People. pic.twitter.com/4HZwqm5sWI

— Ben Kew (@ben_kew) July 13, 2024

CNN went with a similar line, suggesting that Trump had merely fallen over.

Even in a horrifying moment such as this they just can’t help themselves. pic.twitter.com/REDIQvWaX8

— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) July 13, 2024

The New York Times went as far as saying that the spraying of bullets “sounded” like gunfire.

“What sounded like gunshots”

Really? I thought they sounded like paper airplanes pic.twitter.com/GkOrd5MJSn

— Ben Kew (@ben_kew) July 13, 2024

The Washington Post also used the “loud noises” line:

If you are on , you witnessed an assassination attempt on President Trump in real time

If you are reading regime Media like CNN + Washington Post, you believe Trump fell on stage because of loud noises

And you wonder why they hate Elon… pic.twitter.com/aflKqyavHR

— Ashley St. Clair (@stclairashley) July 13, 2024

Axios reporter Juliegrace Brufke claimed a “source” told her that Trump was actually hit by glass fragments rather than bullets.

“Glass fragments not a bullet hit Trump,” a source familiar tells me.

— Juliegrace Brufke (@juliegraceb) July 13, 2024

One of the Post‘s reporters said that Trump was merely “grazed” by gunfire.

Butler county district attorney Richard Goldinger tells me Trump was grazed by gunfire but is safe. An audience member was killed and the shooter is dead. Another person is in serious condition, the prosecutor said.

— Meryl Kornfield (@MerylKornfield) July 13, 2024

Full details of the incident have yet to be released, although one person is said to have died while at least one more is in critical condition.

Trump, meanwhile, posted a statement on Truth Social in which he described the shocking incident that took place.

“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” he wrote. “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”
