Time for a ‘Big, Beautiful Deal’ for Greenland

Time for a ‘Big, Beautiful Deal’ for Greenland

“Commerce, not chaos” is the president’s preferred foreign policy. He should act on it and build his legacy in Greenland.

“We want to develop our business sector and diversify it, and that requires investments from outside”, Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland’s business minister told the Financial Times in a recent interview, hinting at China to fill the gap if the U.S. and EU don’t come out to play: ‘‘We do want to partner up with European and American partners. But if they don’t show up I think we need to look elsewhere.”

Asked about the sudden American interest in Greenland, the minister said, “We sort of hoped that the Trump administration would be more willing to engage in dialogue with Greenland about the mineral sector development. We got a bit more than we asked for, because we have no wish to be American.”

Regular readers of this esteemed publication may recall her name from a detailed interview in which she spoke in similar terms about American investment in Greenland. “There are ample opportunities for American investors to engage themselves in Greenland, not only in the mining sector, but in other sectors as well,” she told us. She’s correct. And the United States should make the Greenlanders an offer.

There are many essays about the historic interest of the United States about Greenland, including from yours truly. That need not be rehashed, but the structural question remains underdiscussed. Greenland is a massive island, three times the size of Texas, but with a population that could fit in a football stadium with plenty of elbow room. Any major investment that could make individual Greenlanders all millionaires and Greenland the richest island in the Western Hemisphere will come with some strings attached. No one would want to invest in a place that doesn’t benefit them too: The profit motive works both ways. A second point: Everyone who would want to invest would need manpower to work in the projects involved. The scale of projects that Nathanielsen envisions would require not just massive amounts of cash, but also infrastructure and, most importantly, skilled labor and training for said labor.

To her credit, Nathanielsen understands that. In her Financial Times interview, she mentioned that Greenland was “having a difficult time finding our footing” in a changing geopolitical landscape, as the U.S. is considered just as predatory as China. She considers the EU as a natural fit, and aligned on environmental metrics.

Unfortunately, that is the key problem. The EU is simply not capable of investing the amount required, nor does it have the expertise or hardware production capacity. EU structures prohibit the degree of research and development required to make Greenland a mining and trading hub, a Singapore on the Arctic. The Ukraine war should have made it clear by now just how much the EU lags in hardware production. Individual countries can invest, of course. Denmark and France are investing in some mining in Greenland, but the amount runs to mere millions of euros in total. European GDP, investment, research, and tech was at parity with the U.S. up until 2008. The U.S. dwarfs the EU now.

Then there is this question of security. Arctic security will be a headache to Europe in the coming decades. Given China’s closeness to Russia and its material aid in the Ukraine conflict, it is unlikely that Europeans would desire major Chinese investment (and Chinese or Russian intelligence-gathering) in a place that essentially looks over their northern trade routes. It is not just an American concern, but a European concern as well. Consider, also, how the Chinese are increasingly wrecking strategic competition by buying up assets. The case of British Steel and the Chinese control of Hutchison Port Holdings in Panama should be cautionary tales for Europeans courting Chinese investment. Without any provision of American security but with potential Russo-Chinese–aligned military interest, inviting such investment is self-destructive.

For what it is worth, the Americans do already have an underused military base there. An initial investment in modifying the infrastructure of that base could itself instantly pour billions in Greenland’s economy, saturate the labor market, and provide a job or business for every single Greenlander.

But that’s not all. Another instant investment could be in the tourism sector and markets of Greenland. “Most of the tourism is government-owned and controlled and independent investors and operators are squeezed out and disadvantaged in many ways,” the former Ambassador to Denmark Carla Sands told The American Conservative. “We can give individuals an opportunity to be entrepreneurs and build a private sector tourism ecosystem in Greenland. They have magnificent sights and amazing food. They need to do better in tourist offerings, more restaurant options, hotels, the whole experience. Iceland can be a good example. Greenland’s government cooperated with the U.S. Interior Department at my request in the first Trump administration. The department helped Greenlanders with some knowledge transfer to grow their tourism while protecting their pristine nature.”

A few simple and overnight changes can instantly turn Greenland into a First-World trading hub. Reykjavik in Iceland gets around 2,000 flights monthly. The total cost of American investment in hospitality, tourism, a modern state-of-the-art airport, language and specialist training programs, a bilingual or English-language radio or TV channel, and fishing lanes between New England or Alaska and Greenland would be peanuts compared American spending on USAID, but would instantly turn Greenland into a hub of both future European and American investment, including in the much-touted mining sector. A casual work visa system between Denmark and the U.S. could provide jobs and opportunities to both Danes and Americans in the potential expanding sectors. One fact-finding trip from the Congressional Greenland Caucus can start that process overnight.

“Greenland is not just rich in critical minerals—it’s a vital partner in a region growing more important to global security and trade. Strengthening our relationship would bring investment and tourism to Greenland’s economy while reinforcing democratic partnerships in the Arctic,” said Representative Davidson, founder of the Congressional Greenland Caucus. “If we fail to show up, others will—and we may not like the terms they bring.”

It is understandable that Greenlanders are chafing from, shall we say, uneven diplomacy from this administration’s initial days. That storm has now passed, and the rhetoric stabilized. But avoiding the U.S. in favor of the Chinese-Russian embrace is a long-term security risk that prudent Greenlanders would be smart to avoid. And the EU is incapable of replacing America in the Arctic, in both security and trade. It is a mutually beneficial opportunity for both the U.S. and Greenland to initiate a big, beautiful deal—without all the loose and aggressive talk.

Iran’s Christian Heritage

Iran’s Christian Heritage

An Iraq-style war would imperil the country’s Armenian Christians.

Having walked the ancient stone paths of St. Thaddeus, St. Stepanos, and the Shepherd’s Chapel in northwestern Iran on a recent trip, I’ve witnessed the enduring spirit of these Christian heritage sites. Their intricate carvings, frescoes, and sacred chambers, nestled in the rugged cliffs of a region inhabited by Azerbaijanis, Kurds, Armenians, Assyrians, and Persians, resonate with centuries of faith, community, and against-the-odds survival.

Built by Armenian Christians, these sites have weathered Mongol invasions, Ottoman sieges, and the rise and fall of empires. In the early 20th century, they sheltered those who fled the Ottoman genocide. Today they remain vibrant centers of worship, with hymns echoing through ancient chambers, drawing Armenian pilgrims from around the world and Muslim visitors alike. The undisturbed churches symbolize a broader social-political reality: Iran’s roughly 200,000 Armenians, concentrated mostly in Tehran, Isfahan and Tabriz, enjoy constitutional protections, including parliamentary representation, Armenian-language schools, and cultural autonomy.

Yet today, they face a grave peril arising from a combination of factors.

One is the risk of American and Israeli military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, which would likely lead to another “forever war” and unleash chaos akin to the devastation of Iraq’s Christian communities in the ill-fated U.S. invasion of that country in 2003.

That invasion, sold as liberation by neoconservative ideologues who dominated the George W. Bush administration, irreversibly decimated one of Christianity’s oldest communities. In Mosul, where the Aramaic language—Jesus’ own mother tongue—once thrived, churches like the Syriac Catholic Church of Our Lady of Salvation were bombed, their clergy abducted, and their congregants exiled. The invasion—rooted in hubristic assumptions that democracy would flourish in Iraq in the wake of a regime change—left Christians defenseless against Al Qaeda and ISIS. Iraq’s Christian population, once vibrant, has dwindled by roughly 80 percent—from more than 1.5 million before the invasion in 2003 to some 250,000 people remaining today.

As calls for war on Iran resurface in Washington, St. Thaddeus and St. Stepanos stand as warnings: reckless intervention risks reducing Iran’s churches, and the lives of the Armenian Christians who attend them, to ruins.

The risk of devastation is heightened by simmering international tensions in the region, where the ambitions of Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Israel converge in a dangerous mix. A U.S.-Israel war on Iran could cause the tensions to boil over, further endangering Iran’s Armenian Christians.

Baku’s expansionist regional designs constitute one major threat. While the wars between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the early 1990s, following Soviet collapse, saw atrocities committed by both sides, Azerbaijan—with Turkish and Israeli support—emerged victorious in the early 2000s. Baku, emboldened by its 2023 ethnic cleansing of 120,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, fuels pan-Azerbaijani rhetoric claiming Iranian territory. While not a formal goal of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy, state institutions and official media promote the notion of a “South Azerbaijan” containing territory from Iran’s northwestern regions and host Azerbaijani separatists exiled from Iran. Such belligerence, though for now merely rhetorical, lays the groundwork for territorial expansion should the Iranian government be destabilized.

Turkey, which arms Azerbaijan and denies the 1915 Armenian genocide, also seeks to expand its regional footprint, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan occasionally positioning himself as a protector of all the region’s Turkic peoples, including Azerbaijanis in Iran. At present, Iran’s Azerbaijani and Armenian communities coexist in relative harmony, but a breakdown in the social order could change that, and the Armenian community would be made more vulnerable to the horrors of ethnic conflict if Turkey intervened.

Israel, Azerbaijan’s top supplier of advanced weaponry, aims to fracture Iran along the ethnic lines, and Iranian leaders fear Jerusalem could work to inflame pan-Azerbaijani nationalism, undermining Tehran from within its own borders.

This “balkanization” strategy has been advocated by neoconservative DC think-tanks and pundits like Brendan Shaffer of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, who has been on the payroll of Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR and teaches in Azerbaijan’s state-run Diplomatic Academy. Another such pundit is the Hudson Institute’s Mike Doran, a George W. Bush-era national security official who promotes Azerbaijani irredentist claims on Iranian territory. Shaffer authored a paper in 2021 calling on the U.S. government to use non-Persian ethnic groups, notably Azerbaijanis (the biggest of them) to increase pressure on Tehran. In its most recent iteration, this strategy expresses itself in a push to include Azerbaijan in the Abraham Accords, a proposal explicitly framed as an effort to contain Iran and entangle the U.S. in yet another alliance in the Middle East.

A U.S.-backed war on Iran could see these forces mobilize to carve a “Greater Azerbaijan” from Iran’s northwest. Azerbaijan’s actions in recent years offer a grim preview of what that could mean for Iran’s Armenians. Baku has systematically obliterated the Armenians’ cultural presence in Azerbaijan through war, propaganda, and state-sponsored vandalism.

As I stood last week beside the Araxes River, a narrow body of water separating Iran from Azerbaijan, I was reminded of the ongoing erasure of Armenian culture right across the border in the Nakhchivan region of Azerbaijan, where a priceless Christian heritage lies in ruins. Khachkars (intricate Armenian cross-stones) have been systematically destroyed, churches like the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral in Shusha have been desecrated, and Armenian cultural sites have been falsely rebranded as “Caucasian Albanian” to rewrite history. This eliminationist playbook, coupled with Baku’s glorification of wartime atrocities, signals the danger facing St. Thaddeus and St. Stepanos if U.S. policies enable the destabilization of Iran.

To prevent that from happening, Washington should do more than talk about religious freedom and the protection of Christians worldwide, a goal championed by multiple Republican administrations—it should also craft policies that reduce threats to Iran’s Armenian community. That means purging the GOP of the ruinous neoconservative influence which is largely responsible for the disaster in Iraq and now pushes to repeat it, on a much larger scale, in Iran. The MAGA and libertarian wings of the Republican Party, represented by figures like Tucker Carlson, Steve Bannon, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and Sen. Rand Paul, among others, oppose escalation with Iran. Their skepticism of intervention, born of lessons drawn from the failed Iraq war, offers a chance to rethink U.S. policy in the Middle East.

Negotiating a stringent, but realistic agreement that forecloses Iran’s pathways to nuclear weapons—which, according to the assessments of the U.S. intelligence community, Tehran is currently not seeking anyway—would not only serve U.S. interests, bolstering stability in the Middle East, but also safeguard one of the region’s surviving Christian communities. At the same time, the U.S. should communicate to its partners and allies in Turkey, Israel, and Azerbaijan its strong opposition to any ethno-nationalist, irredentist schemes that would wreck the region.

At St. Thaddeus and St. Stepanos, rising above the Araxes, hymns still sound, echoing those silenced in Nakhchivan and Shusha on the other side of the border. Let them guide us. In peace, not war, lies redemption.

Marco Rubio Announces the U.S. Will Now Ban Foreign Nationals Who Censor the Free Speech of Americans

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced this week that foreign nationals who censor the free speech of Americans will no longer be welcomed or even allowed in the country.

Marco Rubio 2.0 is such a huge improvement over the Marco of the past.

A lot of this has to do with the tendency of European countries to censor social media posts from Americans. In the UK, it has gotten so bad that posting the wrong thing on social media can get the police to show up at your house.

Reuters reported:

US to ban foreign officials over ‘flagrant censorship’ on social media

The U.S. will impose visa bans on foreign nationals it deems to be censoring Americans, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday, and he suggested the new policy could target officials regulating U.S. tech companies.

Rubio did not name any specific instances of censorship. But U.S. tech companies and the Trump administration have challenged U.S. allies in Europe, alleging censorship of social media platforms. Restricting officials from visiting the U.S. appeared to be an escalation by Washington.

Rubio said in a statement that a new visa restriction policy would apply to foreign nationals responsible for censorship of protected expression in the U.S. He said it was unacceptable for foreign officials to issue or threaten arrest warrants for social media posts made on U.S. soil.

This is from the State Department website:

Announcement of a Visa Restriction Policy Targeting Foreign Nationals Who Censor Americans

Free speech is among the most cherished rights we enjoy as Americans. This right, legally enshrined in our constitution, has set us apart as a beacon of freedom around the world. Even as we take action to reject censorship at home, we see troubling instances of foreign governments and foreign officials picking up the slack. In some instances, foreign officials have taken flagrant censorship actions against U.S. tech companies and U.S. citizens and residents when they have no authority to do so.

Today, I am announcing a new visa restriction policy that will apply to foreign nationals who are responsible for censorship of protected expression in the United States. It is unacceptable for foreign officials to issue or threaten arrest warrants on U.S. citizens or U.S. residents for social media posts on American platforms while physically present on U.S. soil. It is similarly unacceptable for foreign officials to demand that American tech platforms adopt global content moderation policies or engage in censorship activity that reaches beyond their authority and into the United States. We will not tolerate encroachments upon American sovereignty, especially when such encroachments undermine the exercise of our fundamental right to free speech.

It’s great to see our State Department defending the basic rights of American citizens. Rubio is shaping up to be one of Trump’s best cabinet choices.

Massachusetts Governor Throws a Fit After ICE Rounds up Illegals on Islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard

ICE conducted raids on the liberal Massachusetts islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard this week, rounding up around forty people for deportation.

It’s amazing to see this after people from Martha’s Vineyard lost their minds a few years ago when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sent a few dozen illegals to the island. They couldn’t get rid of those people fast enough.

The state’s Democrat Governor Maura Healey is not happy about this. She is demanding more information from ICE, which is ironic because if she willing to work with them, she would probably know a lot more about what they are doing in her state.

FOX News reports:

Blue state governor sounds off about ‘disturbing’ ICE operations on affluent liberal islands

Massachusetts Democratic Governor Maura Healey is sounding off about her frustrations with ICE’s latest operations in her state, saying she found it “disturbing” to hear about the arrests of some 40 illegal immigrants in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

ICE, working with several other federal law enforcement agencies, conducted a series of immigration enforcement operations in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard on Tuesday. An ICE statement said “around 40” individuals were arrested as a result of the operations, including an MS-13 gang member and at least one child sex offender.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia Hyde said that “ICE and our federal partners made a strong stand for prioritizing public safety by arresting and removing illegal aliens from our New England neighborhoods” and that “operations like this highlight the strong alliances that ICE shares with our fellow law enforcement partners.”

Healey, however, took a very different tone about the operations. The governor said that “it was very disturbing, needless to say, to wake up to that news about that activity on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket,” according to the Boston Herald.

“Local police chiefs have zero information about what’s happening in their communities. We at the state level have zero information about what’s happening in communities. And that needs to change. We need to get answers. We need to get clarification from ICE,” said Healey.

Here’s a video report from FOX 25 News in Boston:

Why would the governor be unhappy about this? ICE did her state a favor.

Watch Joe Scarborough Stutter and ‘But Trump’ When Confronted With His Previous Defense of Biden’s Mental State (VIDEO)

Joe Scarborough of MSNBC’s Morning Joe was recently confronted by journalist Mark Halperin about his now famous defense of Joe Biden right before the disaster debate last spring, where he claimed this Joe Biden was the best and sharpest Joe Biden ever.

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough brags about Joe Biden:

“F*ck you if you can’t handle the truth. This version of Biden, intellectually, analytically, is the best Biden ever.”

Does anyone actually believe that? pic.twitter.com/QKyZY8SDtJ

— Proud Elephant (@ProudElephantUS) March 6, 2024

This story is actually from a few days ago, so it’s not breaking news but it is important to keep holding all of these media hacks accountable.

When questioned, Scarborough immediately begins to stutter through his answer, then tries repeatedly to ‘but Trump’ his way out of it. He actually invokes Trump’s name more than Biden’s in the clip below.

Transcript via Mediaite:

HALPERIN: I told you for several months, I said, ‘Joe, best Biden ever has become the symbol for the right of those media and MSNBC having, having so much Trump derangement syndrome that you’re claiming that a guy who’s clearly lost mental acuity is the best Biden ever. Now, I’ll say, I say to people, go watch the State of the Union address. Talk to people who talk to Joe Biden. He had good days and bad days. You were with him on a good day and had conversations with him on a good day, but-

SCARBOROUGH: On good days, on good days — plural.

HALPERIN: But looking back at that, do you say, well, it was misleading to say best Biden ever without caveating it and say, except on the days when he’s not the best Biden ever.

SCARBOROUGH: Oh, but I never saw those days personally-

HALPERIN: Well, you did! You did because you saw him address a dead congresswoman, and you saw him in South Carolina.

SCARBOOUGH: The dead congresswoman, yeah.

HALPERIN: Yeah, well, more than that, I mean, I can show you the RNC clip reels. There were plenty of days in public when he, when he was not the best Biden ever. And of course, shortly after-

SCARBOROUGH: He stumbled and bumbled around, Mark. I mean, yeah,he certainly did. Uh, Donald Trump did, other politicians did, but it, and it’s actually the same case as a lot of times when I’ve gone in and talked to Donald Trump. We go on to Donald Trump, and I’ve heard the media narrative around Donald Trump, and certainly I’ve been very critical of Donald Trump, and when I leave, I have a better understanding just like Jeffrey Goldberg did a couple of weeks ago, a better understanding of where Donald Trump is mentally, if Donald Trump is losing it, like you know people have said through the years or not. And so again, am I going to look at a clip that’s gone viral and pay more attention to that than two and a half, three hours I had with a guy one-on-one going around the world? No, I’m just not going to.

Here’s the video:

Scarborough is such a hypocrite. He and Mika did everything they could to protect Biden and denigrate Trump.

Rocker Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, Who is Now a Christian, Talks About His Dark Past When He Dabbled in Witchcraft (VIDEO)

Dave Mustaine is the founding member of the metal rock group Megadeth. He was also a member of Metallica for a while and wrote some of their songs.

He recently appeared on the Shawn Ryan podcast where he talked about a number of different subjects, but in one of the wildest segments, Mustaine talked about his faith and his past. Many years ago, he dabbled in witchcraft and he does not treat the subject lightly.

Mustaine describes a time when he was living in a trailer with his sister when he discovered she had a book about witchcraft which she had used to put a hex on a man who had stopped seeing her. According to Dave, her spell worked because the man came back to her. He then decided that he would use this book to cast a couple of hexes of his own, which he claims worked.

He then describes telling his wife and realizing that he needed to get away from this, but says it took years to rid himself of this darkness.

Talking about the dangers of this, he ominously says:

“When you open up the doors to the dark, they’re not gonna wait to be invited in. They’re coming.”

This is really fascinating, but obviously it’s not for children or the faint of heart. There’s plenty of cussing too, just so you know. Watch below:

It’s also important to point out that Dave Mustaine is a patriot. Check out what he posted on Twitter/X for Memorial Day:

Remembering the heroes who gave everything for our country. #MemorialDay pic.twitter.com/E9XoNH9AUS

He seems to have gotten his act together as a person after some dark times in his youth. People can learn to be better versions of themselves and Dave is obviously proof of that.

WATCH: President Trump Unloads on Harvard’s Prioritization of Foreign Students, Teaching Remedial Math – Says “They’re Getting Their Ass Kicked” in Fight with Trump Admin

President Trump tore Harvard to shreds on Wednesday in the Oval Office when he was asked several questions about the ongoing battle between his Administration and the Ivy League University.

The Trump Administration froze more than $2.7 billion in multi-year research grants and $60 million in contracts for the school last month. The Administration is also cracking down on Harvard’s use of student visas.

Last week, the Department of Homeland Security informed Harvard University that it will no longer be allowed to issue student visas for international applicants.

The decision follows Harvard’s failure to supply documentation confirming that it adheres to U.S. laws prohibiting discrimination in the name of DEI, toleration of campus violence, and collaboration with authoritarian foreign regimes, including the Chinese Communist Party.

However, an Obama Judge blocked the Trump Administration from revoking Harvard’s foreign enrollment abilities on Friday.

During Jeanine Pirro’s swearing-in as Interim US Attorney for the District of Columbia, President Trump took questions on his ongoing feud with Harvard.

During the press conference, the President doubled down on his threat to take $3 billion in grant money from Harvard and redistribute it to trade schools across the United States. “With that kind of money, and money from others, but money from them, you can have the best trade schools anywhere in the world,” he said.

Watch:

Reporter: When could the administration resume the interviews for foreign students’ visas?

Trump: Well, we’re going to see. Look, Harvard has been a disaster. They’ve taken five plus, by the way, $5 billion plus. $5 billion. Nobody knew that they were making this kind— if we didn’t do this, nobody would have, we would have never found this out, Pam. They’re taking $5 billion, and I’d rather see that money go to trade schools. And by the way, they’re totally anti-semitic at Harvard, as you know, and some other colleges too, in all fairness to them. And it’s been exposed, very exposed, and I think they’re dealing very badly. Every time they fight, they lose another $250 million. Yesterday, we found another $100 million, and they have, you know, they have a fund, an endowment, $52 billion, all right? They get a lot of that from the United States, and I think it’s ridiculous. I think this— everyone’s coming up to me saying, we love the idea of trade schools. With that kind of money, and money from others, but money from them, you can have the best trade schools anywhere in the world. You give them to Iowa, Indiana, lots of good states, well run states, and you give them the money, they can only be used for trade schools, and they’ll teach people how to build motors and cars and AI. You know the AI, we’re building plants, we’re building hundreds of billions of dollars worth of AI plants already started, many of them. We’ve never had a boom like we’re having now. You’re going to see it. There’s never been anything like it. So we’re up to about $14 trillion in investments. There’s never been anything even close. You look at Biden, this guy, they had people leaving, as opposed to investing. And they’re doing it because of November 5th, and they’re doing it because of the tariffs. The tariffs have been tremendous. Well, I can promise you, and I have great respect for the people at the European Union, they wouldn’t be over here today negotiating if I didn’t put a 50% tariff on. The sad thing is now, when I make a deal with them, it’s something much more reasonable, they’ll say, ‘oh, he was chicken. He was chicken.’ That’s so unbelievable. I usually have the opposite problem. They say, ‘You’re too tough.’

The President then slammed Harvard for taking almost 31% foreign students, many of whom are “troublemakers,” he said. “I think they should have a cap of maybe around 15%, not 31%. We have people who want to go to Harvard and other schools. They can’t get in because we have foreign students there.”

Reporter: On Harvard, there were some Jewish students protesting on campus yesterday. They said they don’t want you making these huge cuts, cutting off student visas to Harvard in their name…

Trump: Well, Harvard has to show us their lists. They have foreign students; about 31% of their students are foreign-based. Almost 31%. We want to know where those students come. Are they troublemakers? What countries do they come? And we’re not going to— if somebody is coming from a certain country and they’re 100% fine, which I hope most of them are, but many of them won’t be. You’re going to see some very radical people. They’re taking people from areas of the world that are very radicalized, and we don’t want them making trouble in our country. So, I saw yesterday that in the middle, in the middle of the UK, there was a nice young man, he wants to go back to school at Harvard, and he looked good to me, but I want to check his past. But we want to be able to see— you know, these countries aren’t helping us. They’re not investing in Harvard and all of our— we are. So, why would 31%, why would a number so big? Number one, I think they should have a cap of maybe around 15%, not 31%. We have people who want to go to Harvard and other schools. They can’t get in because we have foreign students there. But I want to make sure that the foreign students are people that can love our country. We don’t want to see shopping centers exploding. We don’t want to see the kind of riots that you had. And I’ll tell you what, many of those students didn’t go anywhere. Many of those students were trying students were troublemakers caused by the radical left lunatics in this country.

President Trump further slammed Harvard, saying they are no longer a great school, as evidenced by its new courses on low-skilled, or “remedial,” math, apparently including basic high school algebra.

According to the student newspaper, the Harvard Crimson, “The Harvard Math Department will pilot a new introductory course aimed at rectifying a lack of foundational algebra skills among students, according to Harvard’s Director of Introductory Math Brendan A. Kelly.”

“They’re letting people in, and they’re bragging about how they’re teaching them basic mathematics,” the President said. “Where did these people come from?”

Trump said that he wants Harvard “to be great again,” but they “want to fight.” He continued, “They want to show how smart they are, and they’re getting their ass kicked.”

Reporter: How will the confrontation with Harvard end?

Trump: I don’t know. I don’t know, but Harvard’s got to behave themselves. Harvard is treating our country with great disrespect, and all they’re doing is getting in deeper and deeper and deeper. They’ve got to behave themselves. You know, I’m looking out for the country and for Harvard. I want Harvard to do well. I want Harvard to be great again, probably, because how could it be great? How could it be great when you have– Harvard announced two weeks ago that they’re going to teach remedial mathematics, remedial meaning, they’re going to teach low-grade mathematics, like two plus two is four. How did these people get into Harvard if they can’t, if they can’t do basic mathematics? How did they do it? I mean, people with 1600 on their boards don’t get in, and they’re getting they’re letting people in, and they’re bragging about how they’re teaching them basic mathematics. Where did these people come from? So, we have to look at the list, and Harvard has to understand, the last thing I want to do is hurt them. They’re hurting themselves, they’re fighting. You know, Colombia has been really— they were very, very bad what they’ve done, they’re very anti-semitic, and lots of other things. But they’re working with us on finding a solution, and you know, they take it off that hot seat, but Harvard wants to fight. They want to show how smart they are, and they’re getting their ass kicked.

Elections in Venezuela: Manuel Rosales After Defeat Asserts: We Will Persist on the Electoral Path with Truth and Unity, Rejecting Abstention and Sanctions

Former governor of Zulia state, Manuel Rosales, announced on May 26, 2025, his firm decision to remain on the electoral path, despite the defeat suffered in the regional and legislative elections.

At a press conference from the Government Palace in Maracaibo, Rosales delivered a message of resilience and commitment, asserting that politics does not end with a defeat, but rather opens a new chapter in his struggle. “We will continue on the electoral path, even with the pain it causes us, with the truth in front, without deceptive promises or words meant to mislead the people” stated the opposition leader.

BREAKING NEWS | Manuel Rosales says that «the discussion of whether or not to participate in the #25May process was not discussed in the organizations where it should have been.» «Just as we criticize the ruling party, the same processes occur in the opposition.» https://tinyurl.com/2ckra8hh

Rosales, who lost the governorship of Zulia to the Chavista candidate Luis Caldera, acknowledged his defeat with a calm yet firm speech. With only 35.35% of the vote, according to official data, the former governor thanked those who supported his candidacy and his party, Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT), as well as the allies who backed him.

“My thanks to those who protected the votes at the polling stations, to those responsible for mobilization, and to all who supported us” he noted. Despite the setback, Rosales made it clear that his fight is not over: “This is not the end, it is a new chapter in my life and in my political struggle.”

One of the most forceful points in his speech was the criticism of sectors of the opposition, led by María Corina Machado, who promoted abstention in the May 25 elections. Rosales called this strategy a “categorically mistaken message” that suggested change was near and that abstention was essential to achieve it.

“I hope those who promoted abstention do not regret it” he expressed, lamenting the massive electoral defeat of the opposition in a context where Chavismo consolidated its territorial power by winning three additional regions, including Zulia.

Manuel Rosales: A Commitment to the Electoral Route.

Manuel Rosales, leader of UNT and a prominent figure in the Venezuelan opposition, served as governor of Zulia from 2000 to 2008 and again from 2021 until his recent defeat.

In 2006, he ran for president against Hugo Chávez, and in 2024, he took on a last-minute presidential candidacy after María Corina Machado was disqualified and Corina Yoris was blocked by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

His decision to run in 2024 was seen as an attempt to salvage the opposition’s electoral path, although it sparked controversy within the Democratic Unity Platform (PUD).

Rosales has defended the electoral route as the only viable solution for Venezuela. In his address, he reiterated that the opposition must follow a “civic, electoral, and democratic path,” ruling out any alternative. “There is no other way, and if someone has one, let them present it — I’m ready to hear it,” he challenged.

The Rise of Chavismo and abstention as a Double-Edged Sword.

The National Electoral Council (CNE), under government control, announced that the Great Patriotic Pole, a coalition led by Nicolás Maduro, obtained 82.68% of the votes, securing 23 of the 24 governorships and a crushing majority in the National Assembly. This result came amid high abstention, with electoral participation barely reaching 42.6%.

The high abstention was promoted by opposition sectors led by María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, who called for a boycott of the elections in protest of the 2024 presidential fraud. However, this strategy resulted in a significant decline in opposition representation, which went from controlling four governorships in 2021 to just one in 2025.

The EU condemns the elections in Venezuela for taking place in a repressive environment.

Meanwhile, the European Union has denounced the elections in Venezuela as a process marked by the repression of dissent and the lack of democratic guarantees.

In an official statement, the EU High Representative expressed deep concern over the highly restrictive environment in which the elections were held, noting that Venezuelan authorities have intensified repression and harassment against the opposition and civil society since the presidential elections of July 2024.

The European Union denounces the «highly restrictive» environment of the latest elections in Venezuela: «characterized by the repression of dissent.»

Furthermore, the EU has urged Nicolás Maduro’s government to end all unjust and arbitrary detentions and to unconditionally release all political prisoners.

The international community, including the United States and the Organization of American States, has backed these demands, calling for impartial verification of the election results and respect for human rights in Venezuela.

This statement by the European Union underscores the growing international concern over the authoritarian drift of the Chavista regime and the urgent need to restore democracy and the rule of law in Venezuela.

Russia Backs Venezuela’s Disputed Electoral Process.

The Russian government, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has praised the parliamentary and regional elections held in Venezuela on May 25, 2025, describing them as «well-organized and without violations.» This statement stands in stark contrast to widespread allegations of fraud, political persecution, and voter turnout that failed to surpass 43%, according to official figures from the National Electoral Council (CNE), which is controlled by the ruling Chavista regime. While the opposition denounces a manipulated and untrustworthy process, Moscow continues to legitimize Nicolás Maduro as a reliable partner in the region.

Russia’s endorsement not only highlights a long-standing geopolitical alliance but also appears to be a calculated move to counter international criticism accusing the Venezuelan regime of human rights abuses and systemic electoral fraud.

The absence of independent observers, the arbitrary disqualification of opposition leaders, and the wave of repression leading up to the vote reinforce the perception that what took place in Venezuela was far from a democratic election. Far from a civic celebration, the country experienced an election day marked by fear, political fragmentation, and the forced silence of a disillusioned citizenry.

The need for a unified and strategic opposition.

The fragmentation of the Venezuelan opposition has been one of the main factors allowing Chavismo to remain in power. While some sectors bet on abstention and international denunciation, others, like Rosales, insist on electoral participation as the means to achieve change.

It is imperative that the Venezuelan opposition overcome its divisions and build a unified strategy that combines international pressure with active participation in electoral processes. Only then can it effectively confront the Chavista regime and pave the way for a democratic transition.
