The Trump–Netanyahu ‘Rift’ Hinges on Gaza and Iran

The Trump–Netanyahu ‘Rift’ Hinges on Gaza and Iran

For the administration to achieve its goals in the Middle East, more daylight between the U.S. and Israel is necessary.

A litany of media reports indicate a growing “rift” between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. After more than 19 months of lockstep American support following Hamas’s terror attack against Israel on October 7, 2023, and through Israel’s ensuing war in Gaza, a change in Washington’s approach appears possible.

While the progress Trump has made on Yemen and Syria is good, the region is unlikely to stabilize if the administration is not willing to take bold, independent action on Iran and Gaza. If Trump cannot break with Netanyahu on these issues, Israel will continue to lead U.S. Middle East policy in a direction anathema to American interests. Trump should capitalize on his current momentum in the Middle East to strike a nuclear agreement with Tehran and end American support for the war in Gaza.

Reports of Trump “bypassing” Netanyahu and the relationship between the two becoming increasingly “strained” are now commonplace. Most notable was an article published in Israel Hayom—owned by Miriam Adelson, the hawkish pro-Israel megadonor to both of Trump’s presidential campaigns—claiming Trump is “disappointed” with the Israeli premier and “has decided to stop waiting for Israel and instead move forward with Middle East initiatives without Netanyahu.” More recently, Vice President J.D. Vance canceled a trip to Israel reportedly to make clear the administration opposed Israel’s imminent plan to flatten then occupy Gaza.

Still, any “rift” should only be judged on tangible U.S. policy change, not rhetoric. Under the Biden administration, reports of strain between the Israeli premier and the former president surfaced regularly, yet never led to meaningful policy change.

Trump, however, has already made notable policy changes. The president has continued his hands-off approach to Syria following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Last week, he announced the removal of U.S. sanctions against the country and met with Ahmed al-Sharaa, the former al-Qaeda leader and now president of Syria, hailing the young leader’s “opportunity to do something historic in his country.” This happened despite Israel lobbying Washington to keep Syria weak and decentralized. Trump is also withdrawing some U.S. troops from the country, another move that raised Israeli objections. These are encouraging signals that Trump does not wish to repeat the mistakes of his predecessors in Syria. He should go further, withdrawing all U.S. troops from Syria—something that should have happened years ago.

Further, in Yemen, Trump ended the open-ended U.S. military campaign against the Houthis following an agreement with the group that it would stop targeting American vessels transiting the Red Sea. Notably, this agreement did not include assurances that the Houthis would cease targeting Israel, and Israel was not notified in advance of the truce. From its inception under the Biden administration, the U.S. military campaign against the Houthis was a needless exercise that neglected the root cause of the group’s actions—the war in Gaza. It cost taxpayers an estimated $7 billion to defend Europe–Asia trade of virtually no consequence to the American economy. Trump’s deal with the Houthis is a welcome end to another unnecessary U.S. military intervention in the Middle East.

These developments are significant in their own right, but when viewed within a broader regional context, they are secondary to challenges posed by Gaza and Iran.

Trump has already broken with Netanyahu and hawkish voices inside Washington through his decision to pursue a diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear program. Trump blindsided Netanyahu with his announcement of nuclear negotiations with Tehran during the premier’s visit to Washington, where he unsuccessfully pressed the president into backing military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Trump stood firm and told Netanyahu he would not support such an attack. Netanyahu—who has lobbied Washington for a U.S.-led war against Iran for almost three decades—demands the full dismantlement of Tehran’s nuclear program. Israel’s preferences are being amplified by hawkish voices inside Washington, who continuously stress the need to include elements in any deal with Iran that they know are non-negotiable for Tehran. These are deliberate attempts to poison-pill negotiations.

When it comes to Iran, America’s chief interest is avoiding another ruinous war in the Middle East. This requires Trump to resist efforts by hawks in Washington and Israel to push the United States in this direction. It also means the Trump administration needs to back away from unrealistic expectations for negotiations to be successful. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff recently suggested that Washington’s “red line” for Tehran is any form of uranium enrichment—something that is a nonstarter for Iran. If this is truly Trump’s position, negotiations will likely fail and escalation is almost certain. To successfully avert war, Trump should sideline the voices pushing him to double down on failed policies in the Middle East, back away from unrealistic expectations, and strike a deal with Tehran.

The war in Gaza still has no end in sight and the United States is facilitating its continuation. Israel launched a massive new military operation in Gaza immediately following Trump’s trip to the Middle East, despite the two stated objectives of the war—the total elimination of Hamas and freeing the remaining hostages—being mutually incompatible. Netanyahu himself acknowledged privately to Knesset members that his objective is to destroy the remaining remnants of infrastructure in Gaza in hopes of driving out its inhabitants. Trump’s breakthrough with Hamas that led to the release of the last living U.S. hostage in Gaza—an effort Netanyahu tried to subvert in March—should be commended. But Trump should not adopt a passive approach to the war as Netanyahu uses U.S. weaponry and diplomatic cover to fulfill his maximalist ambitions in the occupied Palestinian territories or the broader region.

There is no strategic justification for the United States bankrolling Israel’s war in Gaza. American support is contributing to a humanitarian catastrophe while jeopardizing the lives of the remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas. U.S. pressure on Israel to fully lift the siege on humanitarian aid and reach a ceasefire should continue. The Trump administration has an opportunity to get the United States out of this war and end the bloodshed if they use the leverage at their disposal. This also requires Trump to  abandon his reprehensible proposal to ethnically cleanse Gaza and fantastical ideas of a U.S.-led administration for the enclave. These ideas recall the Iraq War in terms of both depravity and unworkability. Trump should break with Netanyahu on Gaza, signaling clearly—and preferably publicly—that Washington’s support for the war is over.

Evaluations of Trump’s Middle East policy will be determined by his actions on Gaza and Iran. Tackling these issues will require bold leadership, persistence, and a break from Netanyahu—something the Biden administration was unwilling and unable to even consider. Trump has a real opportunity to stop the carnage in Gaza, seal a nuclear agreement with Tehran, and begin disentangling the United States from the Middle East. He should seize it.

RIP – Actor George Wendt Who Portrayed Norm on Classic TV Show ‘Cheers’ Passes Away at 76

George Wendt, the actor who portrayed Norm Peterson, a key character on the classic sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. Wendt apparently passed peacefully in his sleep.

Cheers ran for 11 seasons and was one of the most popular TV shows in the country at its height. The show’s run began in 1982 and ended in 1993, shortly before the advent of the internet.

Norm was known for his grand entrances and his regular spot at the end of the bar where he would sit and enjoy a beer.

The Hollywood Reporter has details:

George Wendt, the Beer-Loving Norm on ‘Cheers,’ Dies at 76

George Wendt, who bellied up to the bar to portray the beer-quaffing everyman Norm Peterson for all 11 seasons of the fabled NBC sitcom Cheers, has died. He was 76.

Wendt died peacefully in his sleep at home, his family confirmed early Tuesday morning.

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” a rep for Wendt said in a statement. “He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

Born in Chicago and raised on the South Side, Wendt got his start in the 1970s with Second City, the famed improvisational comedy troupe that was based in his hometown.

Later, he popped up on Saturday Night Live as Bob Swerski, one of the “superfans” who gathered at Coach Mike Ditka’s restaurant in the Windy City to watch “Da Bears.”

Rest in peace, George. Thanks for all the laughs.

REPORT: Joe Biden’s Cabinet Meetings Were Scripted, Used Cameras Creatively to Cover Mistakes

The hits just keep coming for Joe Biden’s presidency and the Democrat party.

One of the details in Jake Tapper’s book, which came out today, is that Biden’s cabinet meetings were scripted, meaning that they were little more than theater. People in these meetings were more like actors than government officials. They also reportedly used cameras to cover any mistakes.

If this is accurate, it basically means that Biden’s presidency was almost completely fake.

Biden team scripted Cabinet meetings, used multiples cameras to cover flubs: Book https://t.co/IeQAGAi2ZZ

— The Hill (@thehill) May 20, 2025

From The Hill:

Tapper and Thompson also reported Biden increasingly relied on teleprompters and note cards even for private discussions like Cabinet meetings.

“Before these meetings, White House staff called the various departments and agencies to figure out what they were going to ask the president so that answers could be prepared. The conversations were largely scripted, even after the press had left the room,” the authors reported…

When a group would ask Biden to record a five-minute address for keynoting an event, the White House usually responded that the video would be one to two minutes, Tapper and Thompson report. But Biden still struggled with that.

“To compensate for that, aides filmed Biden with two cameras instead of one. If Biden messed up, the edit was less obvious with a jump cut,” they reported. “Other politicians use jump-cuts, but Biden aides noted to themselves how much more often they had to use them for the president.”

Just amazing.

So it really was just a new season of The West Wing?

Unbelievable….

Caitlin Clark, Chicago Coach Say They Did Not Hear Alleged Racial Slurs Hurled at Angel Reese at Sky-Fever Game Being Investigated by WNBA

The WNBA announced on Sunday the league is investigating alleged racial slurs by fans at the Chicago Sky–Indiana Fever game in Indianapolis on Saturday. Reports state the alleged racist taunts were directed at Sky star player Angel Reese.

The Fever crushed the Sky in the teams’ season opener, 93-58. The game heated up in the third quarter when Clark did a hard take foul on Reese to force her to the free throw line after Reese shoved a Fever player to grab a rebound for an easy layup. Reese came after Clark, but was blocked as Clark walked away.

— Hater Report (@HaterReport_) May 18, 2025

The ESPN clip starts (curious edit choice) right after Reese shoved Howard out of the way. Afterward, Reese got up to confront Clark, but Clark turned her back and walked away.

This angle appears to show Clark shoving Reese with her left arm:

— Rashan Reeves (@Babyblack1977) May 18, 2025

One problem with the WNBA’s investigation is that there appears to be no evidence of any racial slurs. No video has been produced as of yet, nor have any players or coaches said they heard them.

Fever star player Caitlin Clark told reporters Tuesday she did not hear any racism at the game.

Chicago Sky coach Tyler Marsh also told reporters Tuesday no one on the Sky heard any racist taunts.

Angel Reese addressed the WNBA investigation in comments to reporters on Tuesday without mentioning what, if anything, she heard in response to leading questions from reporters.

In a video posted Sunday, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who was courtside at the game Saturday, said he did no hear any racial taunts from the crowd, which he noted was made up of a lot of families and young girls:

The @WNBA can’t get out of their own way. To issue a statement in response to trolls is a joke. It makes @IndianaFever fans look bad for no reason. It’s like they won’t be happy till they kill the golden goose.

(If I’m wrong I’ll apologize and eat my words but I’m 100% right) https://t.co/wYrmk5d8Pe pic.twitter.com/LCib9r41l4

— Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) May 18, 2025

Portnoy later defended himself over unfounded allegations that he said something wrong to Reese during the game, “To clarify I yelled “Ball Don’t Lie” when Angel missed the tech. WNBA wants to cuff and stuff me for it.”

— Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) May 20, 2025

Sports reporter Christine Brennan reported on the status of the investigation, and its apparent lack of evidence, in a post on X Tuesday, “Nearly three days after allegations of racist comments in the Sky-Fever game, I’m being told the WNBA has no timeline for completion of its investigation and there will be no announcement — either if racist behavior occurred or if it did not occur — until the review is completed.”

The WNBA is apparently responding to online complaints of “monkey sounds” picked up on the broadcast that apparently was just a fan making absurd yodeling sounds:

Hey @WNBA from your beloved ESPN the sound you hear is from a sound machine that sounds like a freaking dolphin & people booing. Please explain how this is racist? So fans are not allowed to boo now?
At this point maybe just change your name to The WKumbaya league! pic.twitter.com/KnnFhb4ZgH

A video report on the fan:

But as Portnoy says, the WNBA has given Indian Fever fans a bad rap just as the season started.

Rep. Nancy Mace Shares Nude Photo of Herself During House Hearing on ‘Surveillance in Private Spaces’ (VIDEO)

Congresswoman Nancy Mace shared a still nude photo of herself during a House hearing on ‘surveillance in private spaces’ on Tuesday.

Rep. Mace said her ex-fiancé Patrick Bryant took the nude footage of her without her consent.

Bryant denies the allegations.

In February Mace said she was a victim of rape and accused four men of sexual assault.

Newsweek reported:

Mace shared a nude image from a video of herself during a House Oversight Subcommittee hearing on “surveillance in private spaces” on Tuesday. The South Carolina lawmaker said during the hearing that Bryant recorded and took photos of nude women and that he filmed “rape.” She labeled his alleged actions “creepy” and “criminal.”

Mace also repeated her allegations against her ex-fiance before Tuesday’s hearing, writing in an X post: “Today I will show my naked body on one of the videos predator and rapist Patrick Bryant took of me and many other women. Without our knowledge. Without our permission. And without our consent.”

“This naked silhouette is my naked body. I didn’t know that I had been filmed. I didn’t give my consent. I didn’t give my permission and this particular video that Patrick Bryant recorded of me on his secret camera, he saved for over three years without my knowledge.”

“Today I exposed a monster whose victims deserve justice. The victims also deserve stronger federal and state laws to protect them,” Nancy Mace said.

“To other potential victims, I want you to know, “I have your back,”” she said. “I would run through a brick wall to protect women and girls in South Carolina.”

Joy Behar Has Meltdown Over Jake Tapper’s Biden Book: What About Trump’s ‘Atrocities’? (VIDEO)

Joy Behar and other hosts on The View are very upset about Jake Tapper’s new book about Joe Biden. The media’s sudden interest in Biden’s mental decline is basically giving Behar a bad case of BUT TRUMP.

Behar even tried to rattle off a list of what she called Trump’s ‘atrocities’ and wondered why no one is writing a book about that.

Of course, her rant was full of inaccuracies and opinions rather than facts, but when has the truth ever stopped her before?

FOX News has details:

“The View” co-hosts melted down on Tuesday while discussing the new book by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson about the cover-up of former President Joe Biden’s decline while in office, with some deflecting criticism of Democrats and instead slamming the reporting itself.

Co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin criticized President Donald Trump throughout the discussion, wondering why it was important to learn about the Biden cover-up now amid what they claimed were Trump’s “atrocities” early in his second term.

Tapper and Thompson’s book, “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,” was released Tuesday.

“All he is doing is hawking his book on CNN, and he’s flanked by other people — Brian Stelter and Van Jones — also hawking his book,” Behar said, referring to Tapper. “When did CNN become a place to hawk your book? Is Wolf Blitzer coming out with a cookbook?” she asked.

Watch the clip below:

Questioning Democrats in any way makes the ladies of The View very angry. Apparently, you’re only allowed to question Trump. What a clown show.

Ric Grenell Uncovers $26 Million in ‘Fake Revenue’ at Kennedy Center — Vows Criminal Charges for Biden Appointees

President Trump’s choice to run the Kennedy Center has said he has found $26 million in fraudulent revenue.

Addressing several board members during a dinner in the White House’s State Dining Room, Grenell stated that a review of the center’s budgets from the past two years had uncovered what he described as “$26 million in phantom revenue—fake revenue.”

“It’s criminal,” Grenell said. “We’re going to refer this to the U.S. attorney’s office here.”

SHOCKING! Ric Grenell just revealed the new CFO of The Kennedy Center went through the 2024 & 2025 budgets and found $26 MILLION in PHANTOM REVENUE. FAKE REVENUE! This is now being referred to the U.S. Attorneys Office. @RichardGrenell pic.twitter.com/fW4wjJnPwE

— George Balfour-Kinnear (@balfourUK) May 20, 2025

The board’s former chairman, David M. Rubenstein, has denied any wrongdoing.

“With full transparency, the financial reports were reviewed and approved by the Kennedy Center’s audit committee and full board as well as a major accounting firm,” his spokesperson told The New York Times.

Trump, meanwhile, took aim at the center for promoting political propaganda under its previous leaderhsip.

“Instead of putting forward programming that tears our country down and tears our country apart, the Kennedy Center should be the nation’s premier venue for lifting up the best of our country and lifting up the American arts, theater, music and culture,” Trump said.

He continued:

We’re going to do some good things, but the basics are there. The location is phenomenal. The importance of the building is phenomenal. And we’ll have some very interesting plans.

I always thought they should have built a beautiful performing center, open air, facing out over the Potomac.

They didn’t do that. They built these crazy rooms underneath; they built three tiny little stages, very expensive. Someday, maybe somebody will occupy one.

We’re going to turn it around. That’s what I love doing. I love turning things around. Turnaround artist. We’re doing that with the country.

BREAKING: Justice Department Opens Criminal Investigation Into Andrew Cuomo

The Justice Department opened a criminal investigation into former New York governor – and current NYC Mayoral front-runner – Andrew Cuomo over his testimony on nursing home deaths during the Covid pandemic.

Last month House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) sent a resubmitted criminal referral to Attorney General Pam Bondi, demanding the Department of Justice pursue charges against disgraced former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo for lying under oath during pandemic-era investigations.

The letter, addressed directly to AG Pam Bondi, accused Cuomo of violating 18 U.S.C. §1001, a federal statute prohibiting false statements to Congress:

On October 30, 2024, the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic (Select Subcommittee) referred former Governor of the State of New York, Andrew M. Cuomo, for making criminally false statements in violation 18 U.S.C. §1001.1

To our knowledge, the Biden Administration ignored this referral despite clear facts and evidence. Accordingly, we request you review this referral and take appropriate action. For your reference, the referral is attached to this letter.

The Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is the principal oversight committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.

TGP reported multiple times in 2020 how Governor Cuomo in New York implemented programs that ordered sick COVID patients back into elderly homes in the state. As a result, thousands of elderly people needlessly died in the state.

Then when the official counts of deaths in state nursing homes were requested from the DOJ, the numbers were fudged. The numbers reported were about 50% less than the real counts.

An investigation into Cuomo’s actions was put in place and Cuomo resigned as governor of the state. However, the investigation into illegal actions by Cuomo related to the huge number of nursing home deaths was dropped by both the Biden DOJ and the Manhattan DA.

“Andrew Cuomo is a man with a history of corruption and deceit, now caught red-handed lying to Congress during the Select Subcommittee’s investigation into the COVID-19 nursing home tragedy in New York,” said Chairman Comer.

Read to the letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi here. The full criminal referral can be found here and an additional supporting transcript can be found here. Review former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s transcribed interview transcript here.

Cuomo is under investigation by the DC US Attorney’s Office, according to The New York Times.

The investigation was launched last month when Ed Martin was Acting DC US Attorney. Jeanine Pirro is currently the interim DC US Attorney.

LEAK: Israel Preparing to Strike Iran’s Nuclear Facilities

Israel is preparing to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to a leak to CNN.

CNN reported on Tuesday that the United States obtained new intel suggesting Israel is currently planning on striking Iran’s nuclear and uranium enrichment facilities.

No final decision has been made, according to CNN.

President Trump recently demanded that Tehran stop enriching Uranium.

Iran’s Supreme Leader blasted the Trump Admin on Tuesday and said the Islamic Republic will continue to pursue their own policies.

For the Americans to say, “We won’t allow Iran to enrich uranium,” is utter nonsense. We aren’t waiting for anyone’s permission. The Islamic Republic has certain policies, and it will pursue them.

— Khamenei.ir (@khamenei_ir) May 20, 2025

CNN reported:

The US has obtained new intelligence suggesting that Israel is making preparations to strike Iranian nuclear facilities, even as the Trump administration has been pursuing a diplomatic deal with Tehran, multiple US officials familiar with the latest intelligence told CNN.

Such a strike would be a brazen break with President Donald Trump, US officials said. It could also risk tipping off a broader regional conflict in the Middle East — something the US has sought to avoid since the war in Gaza inflamed tensions beginning in 2023.

Officials caution it’s not clear that Israeli leaders have made a final decision, and that in fact, there is deep disagreement within the US government about the likelihood that Israel will ultimately act. Whether and how Israel strikes will likely depend on what it thinks of the US negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear program.

But “the chance of an Israeli strike on an Iranian nuclear facility has gone up significantly in recent months,” said another person familiar with US intelligence on the issue. “And the prospect of a Trump-negotiated US-Iran deal that doesn’t remove all of Iran’s uranium makes the chance of a strike more likely.”

Reform UK’s Tice Torches PM Starmer in Parliament, Tells Him His Labour Party Will Lose Next Elections Over His Brexit Betrayal (VIDEO)

Richard Tice said Labour will lose power to Reform UK because of Brexit Betrayal.

The UK’s ‘reset deal’ with the European Union continues to send Geopolitical waves across Britain and the continent.

Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Betrayal of Brexit has angered populists and conservatives, and a Reform UK MP told the Premier to his face that his Labour MPs will ‘lose their seats to Reform at the next election’ because of that.

The Telegraph reported:

“The deputy leader of Reform said that in the same way that the Prime Minister had ‘surrendered the fishing industry’ during talks with Brussels, he had also ‘surrendered the jobs’ of many of his MPs.”

Tice torched Starmer after the PM briefed the House of Commons on the terms of the deal.

Starmer said his ‘reset’ would ‘release [the UK] from the tired arguments of the past’, position Britain to ‘seize the opportunities of the future’.

Tice begged to differ: Labour will pay the price for the betrayal at the ballot box.

“He said: ‘In Boston and Skegness my fishermen are furious that the Prime Minister has surrendered the fishing industry and my constituents are furious that you have surrendered on freedom of movement and on rule-taking under the ECJ [European Court of Justice]’.

‘But there is good news. Prime Minister, do you accept that you have also surrendered the jobs of many of your backbench MPs at the next general election to Reform?’”

My constituents are furious with the Prime Minister’s surrender of fishing and Brexit freedoms.

But he’s also surrendered many of his MPs jobs when he loses to Reform at the next General Election. pic.twitter.com/zqzz2gPjKE

— Richard Tice MP (@TiceRichard) May 20, 2025

Starmer said ‘he’d be pleased’ to explain the ‘huge benefits’ and ‘jobs saved and created’ because of the deal.

“’It is really important for our economy that we have these deals. That is in the interests of his constituents. It is in the interests of the whole country’.”

The Government said the pact will deliver a £9 billion annual boost to the economy.

“But critics seized on clauses in the deal which give European fishermen access to the UK’s coastal waters until 2038 and allow Brussels to impose sanctions on British exports if any future government decides to rewrite the agreement.”
