ONE-THIRD OF MY GENERATION ABORTED — America’s Birth Rate Collapsing as the Left Destroys the Family

America is heading toward a demographic crisis, and the political left has played a central role in creating it.

The national birth rate has now fallen to roughly 1.56 births per woman, far below the 2.1 births per woman generally considered necessary for population replacement. No serious country can ignore a gap that large without consequences.

A nation cannot continue shrinking its next generation and expect long-term economic strength, social stability, or fiscal sustainability.

Low birth rates carry direct economic and structural consequences. A smaller younger generation means a smaller future workforce. A smaller workforce means fewer taxpayers, fewer workers supporting entitlement programs, and fewer people available to sustain the institutions that hold the country together.

That burden becomes even heavier as older generations retire and draw more heavily on Social Security, Medicare, and other public programs. When a country combines below-replacement fertility with an already expanding welfare state, the result is not simply stagnation but long-term decline.

The United States is now moving in that direction. The problem is not only that fewer children are being born, but that an entire political and cultural movement has spent years attacking the family, undermining the value of parenthood, and treating children less as a blessing and more as a burden.

That movement has been led overwhelmingly by Democrats and the institutions aligned with them.

The modern left has built a political culture that prioritizes radical individualism, dependency on government, and hostility toward the traditional family structure that historically produced stable communities and national continuity.

Abortion has also played a major role in this decline. In 2025, more than 1.1 million abortions were performed in the United States. That number alone should force a national reckoning.

A country already suffering from historically low fertility cannot afford to eliminate hundreds of thousands of future citizens every year and then pretend demographic decline emerged out of nowhere.

The same political coalition that claims to care about fairness, economic justice, and the future of younger generations continues to defend a system that reduces the size of those generations before they ever have a chance to live.

That reality will have lasting consequences for Generation Z and those who come after it. A smaller younger population will be expected to support a large retiring population while also dealing with debt, inflation, housing costs, and slower economic growth.

Fewer workers will be asked to carry a larger burden. That is not a sustainable formula. It is a recipe for long-term national strain.

Democrats also have a political incentive to sustain a culture that weakens family formation. Marriage, parenthood, and community responsibility often change political behavior.

People with children tend to think more seriously about school curriculum, neighborhood safety, taxes, cultural stability, and parental rights. Raising a family often makes politics more concrete, shifting attention away from abstract ideological slogans and toward the institutions that shape a child’s life.

That shift does not generally benefit the modern left, whose agenda depends heavily on weakening parental authority and expanding the role of the state.

A healthy society should want strong families, rising birth rates, and a culture that sees children as essential to the nation’s future.

America should be making family formation easier, not harder. Public policy should reward marriage, support parents, and treat demographic decline as a national emergency. Instead, the country has spent years moving in the opposite direction.

No civilization can preserve its strength while refusing to reproduce itself. A country that cannot replace its own population eventually loses more than economic growth. It loses confidence, continuity, and the human foundation on which every serious nation depends.

America’s birth-rate decline reflects political choices, cultural priorities, and a left-wing worldview that has treated family life as optional, inconvenient, or even oppressive.

The Gateway Pundit reported on the tragic and brutal murder of United States Marine Daniel Montano, 21, in Wilmington NC, on Easter morning.

As WECT reported, Wilmington police responded to reports of fighting in the downtown area at roughly 2 am Sunday. There, they found that two people had been stabbed.

One of the victims was 21-year-old Daniel Montano, a United States Marine. He had been stabbed in the neck and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Unfortunately, Montano later died from his injuries.

After a manhunt for the perpetrator over several days, which included surveillance footage, the Wilmington Police Department (WPD) announced the arrest of Davy Spencer,47.

Spencer was charged with second-degree murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He is currently being held without bond, and his first court appearance is scheduled for April 13.

Spencer has an extensive prior criminal history in the area that goes back three decades and includes previous drug-related felonies. In 2015, he was sentenced as a habitual felon and has been incarcerated numerous times.

The Wilmington Police Department shared the following in a news release:

SWALWELL’S CAREER IN SHAMBLES: Senior Staffers from His Congressional Office and Gubernatorial Campaign Release Statement Denouncing Him as ‘Abhorrent’

In a devastating blow to Rep. Eric Swalwell’s political future, senior staff members from both his congressional office and his California gubernatorial campaign have publicly turned against him, releasing a scathing statement condemning his alleged conduct following explosive new reports of sexual assault and a video of him kissing a woman who is reportedly a sex worker.

The denunciation follows bombshell reports published Friday by the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN detailing sexual misconduct allegations from four women.

One of them, a staffer of two years, said she was raped by him twice.

Additional Women Come Forward Accusing Eric Swalwell of Sexual Misconduct After Alleged Rape Victim Went Public

The three other women accused him of various forms of sexual misconduct, including sending unsolicited nude photos.

Martin Shkreli also released shocking video footage appearing to show the married congressman in an intimate encounter with a woman who is not his wife, and who he said was a sex worker.

The statement from Swalwell’s staff read in full:

“As leaders of teams working for Eric Swalwell, we’re horrified by the recent reporting in the San Francisco Chronicle and by CNN.

We stand with our former colleague, and the other women who have come forward. We believe you should stand with them, too.

The behavior detailed in these reports is abhorrent, beneath the dignity of those serving in public office and betrays the trust of all Californians.

We also understand that we lead teams who need guidance and stability now, more than ever. We are focused on supporting our colleagues during this challenging time.

Any decision of staff members to remain in their roles in the interim should not be viewed as support for Eric Swalwell. We recognize that not everyone — in particular our junior staff — can immediately forfeit their income and benefits without significant personal risk or consequence. Our responsibility now is to them.

We, more than he, understand that we have obligations to the people we lead and to the constituents of California’s 14th Congressional District. Those of us that remain on staff do so for the sole purpose of ensuring that as many of those obligations are fulfilled as possible.”

The statement was signed, “Senior staff, Office of California’s 14th Congressional District” and “Senior staff, Eric Swalwell for Governor 2026.”

The scandal has triggered a rapid collapse of his gubernatorial campaign.

Multiple top staffers resigned before the stories were even published, and high-profile endorsements have been pulled, including from Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has reportedly opened an investigation into the sexual assault allegations.

Swalwell has denied all of the allegations.

Jack Posobiec Drops Additional Video of Eric Swalwell in Bed with Alleged Sex Worker

A man and woman sit closely together on a bed in a hotel room, both engaged with their phones in a relaxed setting.

Conservative activist and Human Events editor Jack Posobiec has released an additional video showing what appears to be Swalwell in bed with an alleged sex worker.

Posobiec announced on X that he obtained the new footage, which was taken moments after the initial shocking video first circulated online earlier today courtesy of “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli.

Posobiec also revealed he received a digital forensics report attesting to the veracity of both videos.

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, Shkreli dropped the bombshell initial video showing Swalwell getting intimate with the woman described as a sex worker and NOT his wife.

The disgraced Democrat has a long history of sleazy behavior, including his notorious relationship with Chinese spy Fang Fang, which we have covered extensively at The Gateway Pundit for years.

The video captures Swalwell in a compromising situation that directly contradicts the image the sleazebag Democrat has tried to project while running for California governor.

Shkreli publicly reached out to Swalwell’s campaign on X Saturday, stating he had received the video and was giving them a chance to comment before releasing it to the public.

Twenty minutes later, Shkreli posted the video of Swalwell getting intimate with an alleged sex worker.

He wrote:

“Here is the @ericswalwell video. my source says it was taken in his home and the woman is a sex worker.”

Watch the video HERE.

According to Posobiec’s forensic analysis shared on X, the new video confirms Swalwell, the same congressman who spent years lecturing America about “decency” while pushing impeachment against President Trump, is seen in bed with a woman described by multiple sources as a sex worker, not his wife.

The footage shows the married California Democrat in an intimate setting with the woman and another man, groping and engaging in behavior that would end any Republican’s career in a heartbeat.

Watch the video HERE.

Just days ago, The Gateway Pundit broke the story of a bombshell accusation from a former Swalwell staffer who claimed the congressman sexually assaulted her – twice – while she was too intoxicated to consent.

The woman described waking up naked and bruised in his hotel bed after one incident in 2019 and another horrifying encounter in 2024 where she repeatedly said “no” as Swalwell allegedly forced himself on her.

CNN followed up with reports of three additional women accusing Swalwell of sexual misconduct, including unsolicited explicit messages and unwanted advances.

Team Swalwell tried the usual Democrat damage control, but the walls are closing in fast.

Statement from senior staff of California’s 14th Congressional District and Eric Swalwell for Governor 2026:

We recognize that not everyone – in particular our junior staff – can immediately forfeit their income and benefits without significant personal risk or consequence.

Our responsibility now is to them.

We, more than he, understand that we have obligations to the people we lead and to the constituents of California’s 14th Congressional District. Those of us that remain on staff do so for the sole purpose of ensuring that as many of those obligations are fulfilled as possible.”

The Gateway Pundit has not independently verified the videos at this time. Swalwell’s campaign team has not responded to The Gateway Pundit’s inquiry.

UPDATE: Far-Left Anti-ICE Extremist Now PLAYS VICTIM After Brutal Assault on TPUSA Reporter Savanah Hernandez — Boyfriend Also ARRESTED and In Custody

Confrontation between law enforcement and a protester, with a close-up of a man in an orange jumpsuit, highlighting tensions during a recent event.

The radical left just can’t help themselves.

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, Saturday turned into a nightmare for conservative journalist Savanah Hernandez when a deranged mob of anti-ICE protesters physically assaulted her outside the Whipple ICE Facility in Minneapolis.

Hernandez was simply standing on a public street filming the protesters’ unhinged “F*CK ICE” meltdown.

“I was just brutally assaulted by multiple people outside of the Whipple ICE facility in Minneapolis,” Hernandez wrote on X.

“Multiple people swung on me and a grown man pushed me to the ground. My glasses are broken. ANTIFA still alive and well. I’m talking with police about pressing charges.”

In a follow-up post, Hernandez wrote:

“I just finished scrubbing through the footage from my POV. Again, my intention today was to not even conduct interviews because I know how INSANE the left can be. For simply standing and filming BROLL for TPUSA I was assaulted, chased off of a public street and beaten.”

Video footage captured by Hernandez herself shows the mob swarming her, blasting whistles in her face, waving sex toys as some sick form of “protest,” screaming obscenities, and then escalating to outright violence, shoving her, swinging on her, and throwing her to the ground.

Protesters engage in heated exchange during a political rally, showcasing tensions and differing opinions on social issues.

“Here was the lead up to the assault on me today. As you can see these people come up to me multiple times, put dildos in my face, body check me, punch me and push me down. The radical left-wing is one of the most violent safety threats in America.”

WATCH:

Here’s another angle:

Some in the crowd were even heard chanting “We are ANTIFA,” openly embracing their domestic terrorist roots while attacking a journalist for the unforgivable crime of recording their activities.

One assailant, later identified by law enforcement, lunged forward and delivered a vicious punch to her face, knocking her off balance.

Here’s another angle:

Minneapolis police have now identified at least three primary suspects in the assault.

“This is the man who just threw me to the ground outside of the Whipple ICE facility as I was walking out to leave. I had multiple women also swinging on me simply because they found out I worked for TPUSA. I wasn’t even interviewing people today,” Hernandez wrote.

According to Hernandez, the situation became even more disturbing as she later identified the attackers:

“Found out that the 3 people that attacked me today are a family that states they’re Ukrainian-Iranian.

After the daughter assaulted me, the mom came up and attacked me stating “you f*cking hit my daughter?”

The man who violently pushed me to the ground then screamed “don’t touch my f*cking daughter”.

Prior to their assault, all three had come up to me and were calling me a “b*tch”, screaming in my face, putting dildos in my face, blowing whistles in my ears and then assaulted me as I was trying to leave.”

In a follow-up post, Hernandez wrote, “Paige, DeYanna and Chris Ostroushko. You’re not going to get away with this. I am going to do everything in my power to make sure you’re charged for the brutal attack you committed against me.”

The man who shoved Savannah Hernandez to the concrete was identified as Chris Ostroushko, the self-proclaimed “Minnesota Angry Man.”

But the real story gets even better: his daughter, Paige Ostroushko (who goes by “MN Angry Daughter” online).

When police moved in, Paige tried to resist arrest like the entitled radical she is. She was briefly detained but released.

WATCH:

Her boyfriend, however, wasn’t so lucky.

Paige’s boyfriend, 20-year-old Lorenzo Amadeo Garcia of St. Cloud, was arrested on probable cause for obstructing police. Garcia’s father was allegedly deported to Mexico.

Mugshot of a man wearing an orange jumpsuit, with short dark hair and a neutral expression, highlighting a criminal investigation.
20-year-old Lorenzo Amadeo Garcia

Paige herself took to video to cry foul and rewrite history. Here’s what the “MN Angry Daughter” had to say (transcript):

“This is MN Angry Daughter, also known as Paige Ostroushko, and I was the girl that literally just got f*king assaulted by a f*king piece of shit Turning Point bitch. And first of all, her f*king ID is expired. 2023 is when it expired. And second of all, I got released.

They’re gonna, they’re gonna like do investigation and all that for video, but I need everybody to send their video that they got of her assaulting me first.

And then second of all, my boyfriend that was protecting me Lorenzo Garcia, the one that was talking about his dad.

Yeah, they f*king took him for protecting me. I need everybody to get the word out to go to Hennepin County Jail and help him get out because he was assaulted and unlawfully arrested for no reason for protecting his girlfriend. Please send videos. Please, please get the word out.”

Coast Guard Confiscates Over $33 Million of Cocaine in Major Bust

U.S. Coast Guard vessels sailing in formation on calm waters, displaying American flags against a clear sky.

The U.S. Coast Guard has made a drug bust valued at more than $33 million as part of an interdiction effort launched by the Trump administration last year.

The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Escanaba seized 4,510 pounds of cocaine, worth $33.9 million, while on an Easter Sunday patrol in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, according to a Department of Homeland Security news release.

A U.S. patrol aircraft alerted the Escanaba after it spotted a suspected narco-terrorist vessel, and the crew started throwing suspected contraband overboard.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter was launched after the contact off the coast of Ecuador.

The release said that the cutter “deployed its over-the-horizon cutter pursuit boat crew and relaunched the helicopter aircrew to recover the contraband.”

The action was part of Operation Pacific Viper.

A 2025 news release noted that “Operation Pacific Viper is part of a wider effort ordered by President Trump to combat foreign drug cartels in Latin America.”

During the ongoing operations, “the men and women of the Coast Guard will continue deploying overwhelming force against the cartels, cutting off the flow of drugs into the United States and put an end to the cartel’s reign of terror,” the release said.

The release noted that the first 19 operations netted a total of illegal drugs worth $473 million, including 61,740 pounds of cocaine and about 14,400 pounds of marijuana.

After the most recent seizure, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said that “Operation Pacific Viper plays a central part of President Trump’s fight against the cartels at sea, cutting off their ability to make money by trafficking their poison into our country.”

“This operation has already seized over 215,000 pounds of cocaine and has arrested over 160 suspected narco-traffickers. The brave men and women of the Coast Guard are saving American lives by keeping these deadly drugs out of our communities and off our streets,” he added.

The release said that the Coast Guard “has surged cutters, aircraft, and tactical teams to interdict, seize, and disrupt the flow of cocaine and other illicit drugs.”

“These efforts are a critical part of the Trump administration’s strategy to fight narco-terrorism and dismantle transnational criminal organizations,” the release said.

Through Operation Pacific Viper, the Coast Guard has taken in 215,000 pounds of cocaine and detained 160 suspected narco-traffickers.

In one November 2025 seizure, the Coast Guard cutter Stone offloaded more than 49,000 pounds of illicit drugs worth $362 million.

NATO and the Bar Fight: A Bar Tab Europe Expects America To Pay Forever

By Scott Taylor

I’ve been in bar fights. Real ones. The kind where you find out very quickly who your friends actually are.

Here’s the code every veteran, every operator, every person who has ever had to make a split-second decision about loyalty understands at a bone-deep level: you show up. Whether your buddy started it or not. Whether he’s right or wrong. Whether the odds are good or bad. You get off your barstool, you stand beside him, and you sort out the details after the fists stop flying. That’s not bravado. That’s the foundational contract of any alliance worth the name.

For seventy-five years, America has honored that contract with NATO. Every time. Without conditions. We showed up in Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf, Libya, and most recently Ukraine, where I personally and so many other Americans helped integrate supply chains, equipment, and logistics after Russia came across the border. Not as a government official. As an American who understood what the moment required and had the relationships to act.

Europe, now, has largely watched from the barstool.

The frustration is not new. And it is not partisan. I remember standing aboard Air Force One, waiting for President Trump to board, with Secretary James Mattis shortly after he returned from a NATO meeting where he had delivered the Trump administration’s blunt message: pay your fair share. I asked him, “What did you say to them?” He looked at me and said simply: “I asked them, who is going to care more about your kids than you?”

He was trying to shame them off the barstool. A four-star Marine general, reduced to appealing to basic parental instinct because decades of diplomatic pressure had produced nothing.

He wasn’t the first to try. Barack Obama told The Atlantic flatly: “Free riders aggravate me.” Atlantic Council Obama, Bush, Gates, all pulled at Europe’s sleeve. All got varying degrees of nowhere. Trump finally got results. At the 2025 NATO summit, member nations committed to 5% GDP defense spending, a commitment NATO Secretary General Rutte credited directly to Trump’s pressure. White House Credit where it’s due.

But writing a bigger check is not the same as getting off the barstool. Iran has just proven that beyond any reasonable doubt.

A source close to the White House, quoted recently in Politico, said what every operator and frontline veteran has been saying privately for years: “It’s like these [expletive] always talk about Article Five, Article Five, Article Five. Iran has been blowing up our soldiers and ripping their wings off for half a century, and we finally responded, and now they’re going after all our major non-NATO allies and the United States, and you guys are not only saying you’re not going to help but you’re closing your airspace to us. Really?”

Read that again. Closing their airspace. Not troops. Not treasure. Not even a strongly worded statement of solidarity. Just: you may not fly over our territory to defend the alliance we all signed up for, the same alliance whose Article 5 guarantees you’ve been invoking like a prayer since 1949.

Think about what that means in bar fight terms. Your mate is in the middle of a brawl. The other guy has been throwing punches for fifty years. Your mate finally swings back — hard. And rather than stand up, his so-called friends at the bar won’t even move their chairs out of the way.

When Washington drew up military plans to strike Iran, those plans included the use of both Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford, bases the United States has defended, funded, and operated from for generations. The War Zone The UK government initially refused the request.

Iran struck a British RAF base in Cyprus with a drone on March 1st. British sovereign territory was being hit. London’s first instinct was still to check with the lawyers.

In a bar fight, that’s the moment you realize the guy you’ve been covering for twenty years just watched you take a bottle to the head and asked the bartender for a napkin.

Article 5 has been invoked exactly once, September 12, 2001. In the wars that followed, America’s NATO allies lost over a thousand troops in combat over twenty years. CBS NewsThat matters. They showed up for us after 9/11, and I will never diminish that. But here was a moment requiring nothing remotely close to that commitment. No boots on the ground. No declaration of war. Just: let the Americans use the bases we already pay for, and don’t close your airspace when we’re fighting a regime that arms Moscow’s proxies in the very war you claim is Europe’s existential priority.

Europe couldn’t manage even that.

America makes mistakes when we act. But Europe never asks the harder question: what is the cost of not acting? What has fifty years of appeasement and accommodation cost in Iranian aggression? What does it cost when the world’s energy jugular gets held hostage and your allies won’t even open their airspace to help clear it?

The bar fight doctrine is unambiguous: you show up for your mate. Every time. Without waiting to see how it plays out. Without consulting your lawyers. Without checking whether your airspace permission forms are in order. That’s what Article 5 was supposed to mean. That’s what America has delivered, imperfectly but consistently…for three quarters of a century.

Mattis tried to shame them off the barstool. Obama called them freeloaders. Trump stopped being polite with them. The question Europe must now answer is brutally simple: when the fight comes, and it will come, are you in it? Or are you the guy nursing his drink, watching from a safe distance, fully expecting us to bleed on your behalf?

LAUGHABLE: Rep. Jamie Raskin Who Repeatedly Defended Joe Biden’s Mind of Mush is Now Demanding a Cognitive Assessment of President Trump

Rep. Jamie Raskin and other House Democrats are demanding that the White House perform a cognitive assessment of President Trump and publish the results.

Republicans, members of the Trump administration, and the general public should point and laugh at these people. Ridicule them harshly until they wander away in defeat.

These are the same people who not only defended Joe Biden for four years, but smeared anyone who dared to question Biden’s obvious issues of mental acuity.

The Hill reported:

Raskin asks White House physician for ‘comprehensive cognitive assessment’ of Trump

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) on Friday pressed the White House physician for a full evaluation of President Trump’s cognitive abilities.

In a letter to Sean Barbabella, a Navy captain serving as Trump’s official doctor, Raskin argued that Trump’s words and actions in recent months — particularly those surrounding the Iran war — have raised enough questions about the president’s mental acuity to merit a “comprehensive cognitive assessment.” Raskin wants the results shared publicly.

“Experts have repeatedly warned that the President has been exhibiting signs consistent with dementia and cognitive decline. And, in recent days, the country has watched President Trump’s public statements and outbursts turn increasingly incoherent, volatile, profane, deranged, and threatening,” wrote Raskin, the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee.

“His apparently deteriorating condition has caused tremendous alarm across the nation (and political spectrum) about the President’s cognitive function and continuing mental fitness for the office of President, and prompted concerns about the President’s wellbeing.”

These people have no shame whatsoever.

Watch below as Raskin defended Joe Biden’s mental state in 2024 before his party forced him out of the race.

In fact, Raskin has been playing this game since 2017.

Raskin and his fellow Democrats should be told to simply sit down and shut up. They do not have a single leg to stand on here.

British Conservative Douglas Murray Expertly Dismantles Bill Maher’s Defeatism on Iran: ‘It’s an Amazing Strategic Success’ (VIDEO)

Screencap of YouTube video.

Like so many other liberals in media, Bill Maher is already set to declare defeat on Iran. They just can’t stand the idea of any success when it comes to Trump.

During Maher’s show on Friday night, he suggested that we should just cut and run, then going on to say that’s what we have always done.

When Maher was finished talking however, British conservative commentator Douglas Murray had a chance to speak and he took Maher’s argument apart with ease.

Transcript via Overton News:

MAHER: “We did it and it didn’t work.”

“Now what? Do we cut and run or do we stay the course?”

“I hope Donald Trump is the abandoner he’s always been.”

“We always cut and run!”

“We did it in Vietnam, we did it in Iraq, we did it to the Kurds, we did it in Afghanistan, we did it in Beirut.”

“That’s us. No lifeguard on duty.”

“If you get in with us, we are going to fck you, and that’s Donald Trump. He’s an ashole but he’s our a*shole.”

Murray pushed back with a blunt assessment of what he says actually happened on the ground:

MURRAY: “I disagree because I think once started, you have to finish this.”

“I don’t agree that it’s failed.”

“It’s been an incredibly successful operation in lots of ways.”

“Supreme leader dead, Iranian air force destroyed, nuclear sites attacked again.”

“The Navy of Iranian Revolutionary government at the bottom of the ocean.”

“These are not small things.”

“It’s not the case that the Iranian Revolutionary government has come out of this well.”

“I know that some people are wanting to say that after four to six weeks of war, this is some kind of loss for America.”

“It isn’t.”

“It’s an amazing strategic success but everyone wants to know what the out is.”

Watch the video below:

Murray’s argument is simple, to the point, and completely correct. Maher sounds like an utter fool in comparison.

As My Mother Lay Dying

As My Mother Lay Dying

Watching movies with loved ones can be its own kind of communication.

URUGUAY-HEALTH-VIRUS-CINEMA-THEATRE-MUSEUM

As my mother lay dying in the hospital, her eyes tired and her breathing labored, she told me that she had loved watching movies with my brother and me.

She said, in the days before her death from cancer at 79 in September 2023, other things to me, too, but not as many as one might expect. She was the most loving of mothers, but she sometimes struggled to express her feelings plainly. To do so at the 11th hour would not only have represented a reversal of a lifetime of her habits but, for her, a grim confirmation of what we both then knew but refused to say: Her departure from this vale of tears was imminent.

I had gone along with my mother’s preference for inference and indirection at other times, including during another horrible moment in our lives as an increasingly small family. Thirteen years earlier, when my father was in the hospital and was, in fact, soon to leave us, I had told her, reassuringly, “The worst possible thing has not yet happened” — meaning that he had not yet died. I was sure that she knew what I meant when I said “the worst thing.” Looking back on this conversation now, I am not sure that using euphemisms to talk about death is all that healthy, but I am sure that being gentle with a fragile family member is the right choice. And my mother, in many ways, was very fragile.

Years later, facing her own death, it took a certain amount of courage for my mother to even tell me that she had loved watching movies with my brother and me. For her, this counted as a remarkably open expression of feeling. I remember noting that she phrased her statement in such a way to imply that she knew the movie-watching was over: She had loved doing this thing but was tacitly admitting that she could do so no more. There was gallantry in her admitting, even in a roundabout way, that this was likely so.

That she chose to speak about her death by referring to the movies would only surprise those who did not know her well. Given her guardedness and reticence, she had probably long used the movies themselves as a means by which to keep in contact with certain emotions. I cannot say that I remember hearing my mother ever telling my father that she loved him, though of course I knew she did more than anything, but even if I had not been sure, I would have known by the way she responded to her favorite screen love stories: An Affair to Remember, South Pacific, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Two for the Road. This is why it was so much fun to watch movies with her. If I wanted to know how she felt about a scene or a character, I simply glanced in her direction: Her expression would tell me all I needed to know.

Yet the movies had been taken from my mother in the season before her death. Although she did not learn of her cancer until August, about five weeks before she died, its presence had begun to upset her routine several months earlier. At some point in the late spring, my mother had started to find it unbearable to sit for prolonged periods of time. Even 30 minutes was sometimes too much, which ruled out watching too many movies.

A lifelong ritual — a cherished tradition for her and her two sons — was fading.

Each summer since I was a teenager, my mother, brother, and I went to an old movie palace, since converted into a performing-arts venue, to see classic movies: North by Northwest and Charade and Singin’ in the Rain and Brigadoon and on and on. This tradition persisted well into my own young adulthood, but in the last summer of my mother’s life, it finally went the way of all things. That summer, she was weak and in pain, and we managed to see only a handful of the movies we had marked on the schedule. This was itself a huge shock, but I now see that her effort to go to even a few movies with us was the greatest expression of love imaginable: Although it took every ounce of her strength for her to make her way out of the car, into the lobby, down the aisle, and into a seat, she did not want to disappoint me.

The last movie we saw together at the movie series that summer was To Kill a Mockingbird. I have always felt that the most salient aspect of the movie is the fact that Atticus Finch is a widower. His children Scout and Jem regard him with reverence not only because he is such an admirable figure but because, with their mother gone, they realize they can scarcely afford to lose him. As Atticus tells Jem, by way of explaining his disinclination to play a game of football: “After all, I’m the only father you have.” That line had a great impact on me when we had seen the movie, at the same movie series, not long after my father had died. I knew it had an impact on my mother, too. We did not discuss it, but as I so often did, I looked her way and saw the emotions on her face. We shared our grief through Atticus Finch.

That my mother would never again enter a movie theater was not just a lifestyle change but the end of one way we had talked to each other. She knew the loss would be great, and so it has been.
