Jesse Kelly of “The First” talked with podcaster Ken LaCorte about the Red/Blue divide between cities and the country.
Kelly showed a political map of the United States and explained that geographically, it was mostly red. The blue areas were typically cities, which had a higher population density.
“Isn’t the map, the electoral map of America, weird?” Kelly asked.
“Let’s call it a Congressional map. It’s just a sea of red. The country is red, and you have got, of course, these little blue pockets,” Kelly said.
“Why does it seem like a 50/50 country, but it doesn’t look like a 50/50 country?” Kelly asked.
“Ken, explain to me why the map of America looks blood red, and yet we are not governed blood red?” Kelly asked.
“Well, part of it is cause those maps, they are not really looking at people, they are looking at land. And people vote, not land votes,” LaCorte said.
“The more granularly you look at those maps, the more something really jumps out at you. The first thing is it’s not red states versus blue states. We always see that when we are watching the electoral map. They always come down that way,” LaCorte explained.
“When you look at kind of what’s really going on, it’s really blue cities and red rural. And you see that in every state of the Union,” LaCorte continued.
“I live in California, where we have millions and millions of conservatives. They are just overwhelmed by millions more liberals in Los Angeles, in San Francisco, and a couple others, in Sacramento. But the rest of the state is actually very conservative,” LaCorte said.
“In America, it’s the country versus the city in a very, very real way,” LaCorte continued.
“What is it about cities that makes them so blue?” Kelly asked.
“There is more of a collectivist attitude. There is more of a, here is a problem, and the government needs to help us fix this problem,” LaCorte explained of cities.
“When you live out in the country, you are kind of thinking, you are thinking the opposite, right? You are thinking, oh, here comes the government from either hundreds of miles away in my state capital, or a thousand miles away in the federal capital, telling me what I can do with my land,” LaCorte said.
