Mamdani Government Food Stores: Food Isn’t Cheaper, Someone Else Just Pays for It

Selling food below market prices worked so well in Venezuela that an estimated 7.8 million Venezuelans have fled the country since socialism began in 1999.

During his campaign, Zohran Mamdani promised to bring down food costs. His state-owned grocery store program, however, does not reduce the cost of food. Instead, it shifts the cost to taxpayers. Millions of taxpayers will pay the taxes needed to keep the stores open, even though many will live too far away to use them.

Mayor Mamdani held a press conference on Monday, July 27, 2026, at a Brooklyn food pantry to unveil pricing details for New York City’s planned network of five municipal grocery stores, one in each borough. Mamdani said a core basket of everyday groceries, including eggs, milk, chicken, fresh produce, meat, seafood, bread, cheese, and roughly 20 other staple items, would be priced 30 percent below typical retail rates.

Prices on the core basket will be locked in monthly rather than fluctuating week to week, a mechanism Mamdani described at the press conference: “Once a month, our five city-run grocery stores will set prices for this core set of goods at 30% below typical retail prices. No exceptions, no gimmicks. The savings will last for the entire month.” Non-core items at the stores will sell at market rates. The discount applies to all shoppers regardless of income.

The first site, La Marqueta in East Harlem, will be built from the ground up and is expected to open by 2029. A second site, La Peninsula in Hunts Point, the Bronx, is expected to open in late 2027 and will be the first of the five to launch. Sites for Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island are still under review. Locations were chosen based on grocery store density and local income levels relative to the cost of living.

Mamdani has allocated $70 million in capital funds to build the five sites. Under the operating model, the city will own or provide the space and cover rent, property taxes and initial construction costs; private operators, to be selected through a newly released 44-page RFP, will handle day-to-day operations, merchandising and staffing.

Operators must stock the designated core categories, post clear shelf pricing, and meet standards for quality and accountability overseen by an interagency task force.

Jobs at the stores must pay what the city calls family-sustaining wages. Mamdani’s request for proposals for the five NYC Groceries stores requires selected operators to provide “family-sustaining wages and benefits” and to sign a Labor Peace Agreement allowing workers to organize without interference.

Neither the mayor’s office nor the New York City Economic Development Corporation has published a dollar figure, formula, or wage floor attached to the term. No compliance mechanism, audit process, or reporting requirement for verifying the standard has been disclosed.

New York City’s minimum wage, set by New York State law, is $17.00 an hour as of January 1, 2026. Responses to the RFP are due October 16, 2026. It remains unclear whether the underlying contract language, which has not yet been made public, defines the wage standard operators will be held to.

Grocery stores typically mark up goods 25 to 35 percent over wholesale cost, but their net profit margins are only about 1 to 3 percent, making grocery retail one of the lowest-margin industries. The difference between markup and profit is consumed by labor, rent, utilities, and shrinkage, which includes inventory lost to spoilage or theft, leaving almost no room for error in any major cost category.

The 30 percent discount would eliminate most of the markup and likely drive profit margins into negative territory. Meanwhile, although the term “family-sustaining wage” has not been defined, it will likely be higher than New York City’s minimum wage of $17.00 an hour.

Labor costs generally range from 9 to 14 percent of revenue, with large chains at the lower end of the range and independent stores closer to 12 to 15 percent because they have less automation. Combined with higher wages and mandatory benefits, these stores would likely operate at a substantial loss.

The other common issue with socialist policies that mandate higher wages and benefits is that they disconnect pay from both skill level and market wages. Cashiers, shelf stockers, and other entry-level employees would also be covered by a union, giving them the ability to negotiate for even higher compensation.

This further separates wages from the market value of the work being performed while significantly increasing labor costs. As a result, these stores would face substantially higher employment expenses while selling products below cost.

Bodega owners have pushed back on the plan. Radhames Rodriguez, president of United Bodegas of America, said stores paying rent and property taxes cannot compete with city-run stores exempt from both.

Rafael Garcia, owner of La Economica Meat Choice in the Bronx, said roughly two-thirds of his business comes from customers using government-financed food stamps, and predicted those shoppers would shift to the subsidized city stores.

Francisco Marte, president of the Bodega and Business Association, called the plan a Soviet-style approach pitting government against small private merchants. Gristedes owner John Catsimatidis pointed to a Kansas City, Missouri municipal grocery store that closed after the city spent $18 million over a decade trying to keep it open, citing shoplifting and empty shelves as chronic problems.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, asked about the plan, said, “I favor free enterprise.” Government-run grocery stores that opened in Baldwin, Florida and Erie, Kansas also eventually closed; a municipally supported store in Atlanta, Azalea Fresh Market, launched as a public-private partnership. Similar stores in Chicago were forced to close in part because of shoplifting.

INSANE Footage Shows Giant Iceberg Collapsing in Front of Greenland Settlement, Sending Tsunami-Like Waves Towards the Shore

Screengrab Social Media/Telegram

Greenlanders got a front row view of a terrifying spectacle of nature.

Viral footage shows a massive iceberg collapsing (or capsizing) off the coast of the Arctic Island, sending clouds of mist up hundreds of feet.

Cascading waves also erupted from beneath it and battered the shore.

Daily Mail reported:

“The iceberg, which was as long as at least a dozen houses, capsized near to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, on the west coast of Greenland.

Sped-up footage showed the huge ice mass tipping over and towering over the nearby settlement. Despite sending tsunami-like waves when it flipped, no injuries were reported.”

“Ilulissat Icefjord is one of the few areas where the Greenlandic ice cap reaches the sea and is home to Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the fastest and most active glaciers in the world.

It sheds over 46 cubic kilometres of ice every year – some believed to be as old as 250,000 years – as icebergs and is the most of any glacier outside of Antarctica.”

WION reported:

“A massive iceberg did a stunning and scary flip off the coast of Ilulissat, Greenland. […] A video shows the icy body flipping through the sea, creating a rough and scary scene. It does this with such force that the rough underside of the iceberg was also visible as waves hit through.

A video shows houses on in the foreground as the massive icy body thrashes in the sea. No injuries were reported. Netizens reacted with shock and awe to the video of the flipping iceberg.

Some even thought it was an AI-generated video and couldn’t be real. However, the video has apparently been shot by a local resident and is real. Other users pointed out that such an event can trigger a local tsunami. “Does this create a huge wave that grows as it gets to the coast?” one asked.

‘I didn’t know they could do that! I always thought they were too bottom heavy to turn!’ one said. A major chunk of icebergs is typically under the surface of the sea. So for it to be flipping this way means it has either broken from the middle, or melted away. ‘Wow! Very lucky that speeding iceberg in the ocean didn’t take someone out’.”

NOW: Raging Wildfires Approaching French Missile and Rocket Factories

Screengrab Social Media/X

It can get much worse.

For seven days and nights, French firefighters have been battling the Gironde wildfire and are only now getting a measure of success, right as another heatwave is about to hit the Bordeaux region.

The massive Gironde wildfire has burned some 42,000 hectares and remains stabilized but not fully contained.

But a new deadly challenge may be about to enter this ‘apocalyptic’ fire season: the blaze is closing in on missile and rocket factories in France – facilities that store explosive materials.

The Telegraph reported:

“At least seven sites holding hazardous substances lie within 12 miles of the current blaze, France’s worst wildfires in living memory.

Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, an evacuated commune, is home to a 435-hectare facility which produces propellants for Ariane rockets and strategic missiles. Another facility in nearby Sainte-Hélène produces ammonium perchlorate, a powerful explosive agent.

ArianeGroup, the aerospace company which operates the site, said the facilities had been evacuated with ‘all necessary measures’ taken to secure them.

Sébastien Lecornu, the French prime minister, said protective measures had been deployed around the sites ‘given the nature of the products stored there’, Le Monde reported.”

Defense News reported:

“Satellite data on Tuesday morning showed wildfires remained active less than 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) west of Dassault’s Martignas site, which is the wing assembly plant for the Rafale jet, before final assembly of the aircraft in Mérignac.

NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System showed fires and hot spots west of Bordeaux were significantly reduced as of 9 o’clock in the morning local time, though authorities have warned that a new wave of hot weather with a peak on Wednesday, combined with near-record drought conditions, could cause fire activity to pick up again.

[…] Satellite data as of Tuesday morning showed active wildfires around 12 kilometers west of ArianeGroup’s Candale site, where the propulsion units of the M51 missile stages are integrated and assembled, around 13 kilometers from the site of Saint-Médard-en-Jalles where the missile is fueled, and some 16 kilometers of the Le Haillan site that produces the company’s solid-propulsion systems.”

UNEARTHED: “Christian Who Hates Christianity” James Talarico Now Credits Islamic Mystics and Rumi for Shaping His Faith as Much as Christian Writers

Screenshot

Texas Democrat James Talarico, the progressive Senate candidate running against Attorney General Ken Paxton, just got exposed again.

In newly surfaced audio from an April 2024 appearance on The State of Belief podcast alongside Muslim state Rep. Salman Bhojani, Talarico openly credited Islam for molding his religious beliefs.

“I know personally that I’ve learned as much about my faith from Salman’s tradition, from the Islamic mystics, from poets like Rumi, as much as I have from Christian authors and Christian writers,” Talarico said.

He continued by praising interfaith dialogue for bringing “new flavors and new colors” to his tradition and even quoted the Islamic mystic Rumi: “In every religion there is love, yet love has no religion.”

The audio was highlighted by RNC Research and reported by The Daily Wire.

WATCH:

This is the same James Talarico who previously described himself as “a Christian who hates Christianity.”

As The Gateway Pundit reported in June, Talarico made that stunning admission during a 2021 interview on the Activist Theology podcast hosted by a self-described “TransQueer” activist theologian.

“I always think of myself as a Christian who hates Christianity,” Talarico declared at the time, before claiming he keeps getting “drawn back into it” because of the “radical” and “revolutionary” teachings of the “barefoot rabbi.”

Now the man who hates Christianity is telling Texans that Islamic mystics and Sufi poetry shaped his faith just as much as the Bible and Christian writers. And he’s running as the supposed “Christian” alternative in one of the most important Senate races in the country.

Talarico has made his faith a central part of his campaign brand, frequently talking about “biblical Christianity.” Yet the record shows a long pattern of progressive reinterpretations that look nothing like traditional Christianity:

  • He has claimed God is “nonbinary.”
  • He has called Jesus a “radical feminist.”
  • He has suggested multiple biological sexes exist.
  • He has argued that displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms is “deeply unchristian.”

The Gateway Pundit also previously reported that Talarico described Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, and other religions as different pathways leading to the same “fundamental truth.”

“I always think of all the world’s faith traditions as a circle, with that divine mystery of the universe in the middle,” Talarico said in that clip.

Texas voters, especially Christian voters, should pay close attention. A candidate who once said he hates Christianity and now says Islamic mystics shaped his faith equally is not running on the faith of most Texans.

Gov Beshear Calls on McConnell to “Directly and Verbally Address the People of Kentucky” or RESIGN After Latest ‘Proof of Life’ Photo

A smiling elderly man in a hospital setting poses for a photo with a woman, both appearing friendly and engaged.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D) on Tuesday called on Senator Mitch McConnell to “directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky” – or resign.

Beshear said McConnell must provide proof of his capacity to serve or resign.

“As Governor of the state you serve, I am calling on you to directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign,” Beshear wrote in a letter, CNN first reported.

“Per our research, a vacancy in the Senate occurs when a senator dies, resigns, or is expelled by a vote of the Senate itself,” Beshear said.

“If you are unwilling to voluntarily show that you still have the capacity to serve, I will insist Leader Thune fully investigate your condition, report to the American people, and begin the process if warranted,” Beshear wrote.

The Governor’s letter comes after McConnell released his second ‘proof of life’ photo amid a 44-day absence from the Senate.

The latest photo is dated Sunday.

“Senator McConnell continues his recovery from a fall at home in June,” read a statement from the Capitol’s Office of Attending Physician.

“OAP physicians visit with the Senator every day, discussing all aspects of his rehabilitation care. Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls. His bout with childhood polio continues to be a significant factor in his mobility,” the statement read.

McConnell also said he will not be able to attend this year’s Fancy Farm picnic.

Earlier this month McConnell released his first proof of life photo shortly after Senator Lindsey Graham unexpectedly passed away.

Rumors began swirling last week that McConnell was ‘brain dead’ and being kept alive by machines.

According to the statement, McConnell did not suffer from a heart attack or a stroke.

The 84-year-old Kentucky Senator said he was hospitalized after he took a fall.

“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia,” McConnell said.

“Senator McConnell has experienced several falls throughout the year that have been attributed to his post-polio condition. He was admitted to the hospital four weeks ago after falling at home and sustaining minor injuries,” a statement from the Office of the Attending Physician said.

GOP CATASTROPHE: Democrats Effectively Flip Florida House Seat After Republican Incumbent Misses Financial Disclosure Deadline — NO Republican Will Appear on Ballot

GOP incumbent Paula Stark (Credit: Florida House)

A stunning paperwork failure has handed Democrats a guaranteed pickup in Florida House District 47 without forcing them to win a November general election.

Democrats have effectively flipped a Republican-held seat in the Florida House after GOP incumbent Paula Stark failed to qualify for the ballot and her legal effort to reverse the disastrous mistake collapsed in court.

Leon County Circuit Judge Joshua Hawkes formally dismissed Stark’s lawsuit on July 23 and ordered the clerk to close the case, ending the Republican lawmaker’s last-ditch attempt to regain her place on the 2026 ballot, according to Florida Politics.

The result is an astonishing and completely avoidable loss for Florida Republicans.

The only two qualified candidates remaining in House District 47 are Democrats Jorge Figueroa and Anthony Nieves, the Florida Division of Elections’ official candidate list confirms.

There is no Republican candidate.

Because no candidate from another party qualified, the August 18 Democratic primary will be open to every registered voter in the district, regardless of party affiliation. The winner will face no opponent in November and will become the district’s next state representative.

Stark, a two-term Republican from St. Cloud, was rejected from the ballot after the Florida Division of Elections determined that her campaign had failed to submit Form 6, a required public financial disclosure, before the noon qualifying deadline on June 12.

Stark’s campaign treasurer, Joel Davis, claimed that he delivered the form to the Division of Elections before the deadline but that an employee mistakenly handed it back to him.

Five state election workers contradicted that account during a court hearing.

The employees testified that they did not recall receiving or returning Stark’s financial disclosure form. The campaign was also unable to produce a time-stamped copy proving that the document had been submitted.

Judge Hawkes ultimately rejected the campaign’s version of events.

“The Court does not credit the story of DOE staff immediately returning the Form 6,” Hawkes wrote, according to ClickOrlando. “The Form 6 was not turned in before the noon deadline, and [Stark] did not show that she qualified for HD47.”

Stark maintained that she had electronically filed the disclosure with the Florida Commission on Ethics the night before the deadline. However, state officials argued that her campaign was still required to submit the necessary documentation to the Division of Elections as part of the candidate-qualifying process.

The judge initially gave Stark seven days to explain why her lawsuit should not be dismissed. The court has now closed the case, cementing the Democratic takeover.

The loss is particularly painful because Stark previously won the competitive Central Florida district twice by razor-thin margins.

She first captured the seat in 2022 by defeating Nieves by only 878 votes out of more than 46,000 cast. In 2024, she held the district by just 1,246 votes out of more than 77,000 ballots, according to Central Florida Public Media.

House District 47 covers St. Cloud, eastern Kissimmee, portions of Osceola County, and a smaller section of Orange County. It was expected to be one of Florida’s most competitive legislative races in November.

One missing financial disclosure has now erased the voices of Republican voters from the ballot and handed Democrats a legislative seat without a general-election fight.

RINO Cornyn Whines About Push to Cancel August Recess Over SAVE America Act, Attacks Blanche (VIDEO)

Senator John Cornyn is continuing his anti-Trump crusade after losing the Texas Senate primary to Ken Paxton earlier this year.

Republican Senators are refusing to come together to pass the SAVE America Act even though more than 70% of Americans back the voter ID bill.

Cornyn on Tuesday whined to reporters about the push to cancel August recess to pass the SAVE America Act.

Several GOP Senators said they would vote to cancel August recess over the SAVE America Act.

Senators Blackburn, Lee, Young, Moody, Scott and others are all in to cancel August recess to pass legislation to secure US elections ahead of the midterms.

However, RINO Cornyn spent Tuesday morning whining to reporters about the possibility of canceling August recess.

“I don’t understand the rationale. We’re over-promising and we’re not gonna be able to deliver. We don’t have the votes! We’re not gonna change the filibuster,” Cornyn said.

“Some how, the president’s convinced if he presses hard enough we will come around. That’s not likely to happen,” Cornyn said to CNN’s Manu Raju.

WATCH:

Cornyn also went after President Trump’s nomination for Attorney General, Todd Blanche.

“There is no “deal” on Blanche nom. They know what they have to do,” Cornyn said in a post on X.

Last month, John Cornyn said the SAVE America Act is dead.

“Not gonna happen, and every one (except the naive or misinformed) knows it,” Cornyn said.

President Trump has repeatedly called on the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act.

“Requirement for Voter I.D. to vote should be something that NO American should oppose. If you want to register to vote in the United States, you have to be a citizen in the United States,” the White House previously said in a statement.

Nigeria: Eyewitnesses Report Helicopters Appearing Before Attacks on Christian Villages

Photo courtesy of Voice of Borgu via Facebook. In a post published on July 2, 2026, the outlet claimed a helicopter belonging to Nigerian security forces evacuated wounded bandits following a clash between Lakurawa fighters and bandits.

Villagers across three Plateau State local government areas have reported helicopter and drone activity preceding recent attacks on Christian communities, according to on-the-ground interviews, youth leader testimony, and statements from elected officials.

Anthony Moses Dakkas, national youth leader of the Takkass Youths, a predominantly Christian community, told security officials at a public meeting that residents had seen a helicopter landing in Takkass land before the attacks, pressing officials on what he described as the government’s awareness of the aircraft. “Do you know where the helicopter is? You should know it,” he said. Moses added that the helicopter “used to land here, in Takas,” and warned that the community would take further action if the government failed to respond.

The reports fit a longer pattern of helicopter sightings preceding attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. Eyewitnesses in Benue State first described a helicopter overhead during attacks on the Agatu community in 2016.

The pattern recurred in southern Kaduna, where survivors of several attacks reported seeing a helicopter shortly before assaults, believing it was conducting surveillance or delivering supplies to the attackers. Christian Solidarity Worldwide also reported that children displaced from Kajuru LGA would shake and run at the sound of a passing helicopter, associating it with an imminent attack.

The most detailed case came on June 5, 2022, when terrorists reportedly deployed a helicopter during attacks that killed more than 30 people in the villages of Dogon Noma, Ungwan Sarki, Ungwan Maikori, and Ungwan Gamu in Kajuru LGA, according to Adara Development Association President Awemi Maisamari. A ReliefWeb report said that as villagers mobilized to repel the attackers, the helicopter carried out airstrikes against them, providing cover that allowed the attackers to move and fire more freely.

Dogon Noma village head Ibrahim Usman told community leaders that locals believed the helicopter’s arrival meant relief had come, until they realized it was attacking alongside the bandits, after which the village was burned. Kaduna State Commissioner for Internal Security Samuel Aruwan said the helicopter was an Air Force asset dispatched under Operation Whirl Punch that scanned the area and intercepted the retreating bandits rather than supporting them. Analysts noted the incident marked the first time a helicopter was alleged to have directly fired on victim communities on the attackers’ behalf, distinct from the earlier, less specific surveillance and resupply reports from 2016 through 2019.

A separate, unresolved helicopter incident occurred July 2, 2026 in Kaboji, Mashegu LGA, Niger State, though it involved rival bandit factions rather than an attack on a Christian community. A video posted by X user @secmxx showed suspected security personnel and armed men loading injured fighters onto a helicopter, captioned as an airlift of Dogo Gide’s men from Kaboji primary school.

247 Ureports described it as the aftermath of a clash between Dogo Gide’s fighters and a rival faction, Lakurawa, saying a military helicopter evacuated the wounded gunmen rather than arresting them, with no official Army statement at the time. Gaskiya News Hausa reported a security source’s account that the flight was a joint Army–Air Force operation retrieving wounded fighters stranded after a forest clash, airlifted for investigation rather than rescued.

A DUBAWA fact-check confirmed the landing through eyewitnesses, one of whom said a Nigerian Police Force helicopter set down at an old cemetery, not the primary school named in the viral video, between 11 a.m. and noon, and that a tall, masked Fulani man believed to be Dogo Gide was seen nearby. None of these accounts has been independently verified by the Nigerian military, and the identity of those evacuated and the branch of security forces responsible remain disputed.

In addition to the helicopter reports, eyewitnesses are increasingly reporting the use of drones by Fulani attackers to conduct surveillance before an assault. On June 10, 2026, Fulani Islamists killed two Christian volunteer watchmen in Tahos, a farming community of roughly 500 to 600 residents in Riyom LGA, Plateau State. According to the village king, the watchmen were shot with precision despite hiding in concealed positions in the dark, leading him to suspect the attackers used drones or night-vision equipment for targeting.

Local leaders in the area have separately said Fulani attackers are increasingly deploying drones in addition to their standard AK-47 assault rifles, while Christian communities generally lack any comparable technology and depend on volunteer watchmen armed with single-shot muskets.

One reason Christians are concerned about the possible use of helicopters and drones in these attacks is that both require significant financial resources, while drones also require specialized technical expertise. This raises questions about how Fulani, who on average have relatively low levels of education and few resources, are able to purchase and operate them. Helicopters are even more expensive, and in Nigeria it is extremely difficult for civilians to own one.

Consequently, many Christian communities believe that the use of drones, and particularly helicopters, may suggest some degree of military complicity in these attacks.

The alleged complicity of security forces in these attacks is a common thread running through numerous eyewitness testimonies. In Riyom LGA, Islamist Fulani herdsmen attacked Jol village for a full week beginning July 15. During the attack, an army officer stationed in neighboring Sho community, Barkin Ladi, reportedly abandoned his post, changed into plain clothes, and joined the attackers. A local security official confirmed that the officer had been arrested. Reports of these incidents come from eyewitnesses and have not been verified through official channels.

Gankis Emmanuel Dalyop, 47, youth leader of Jol Ward, said the community had “not rested” since the attacks began. He described the attackers traveling roughly three to four kilometers by motorcycle from a settlement locals call Mahanga, formerly Rangkum before its Fulani occupants renamed it. According to Dalyop, they then crossed a river on foot and arrived in groups of 200 to 400 people, typically between 4 and 8 p.m.

Dalyop said the attackers track the village at night using a drone that they “fly in the air at night,” which he distinguished from drones operated by security forces. He added that vigilantes stationed nearby alert residents so they can call in security forces.

He said the conflict has lasted 25 to 26 years and that Fulani settlers now occupy roughly 98 percent of the community’s traditional land. “We are just using 2% of our land,” he said.

Asked why neighboring Fulani settlements never attack one another, Dalyop replied, “They only face us.” He added that Fulani contacts who privately share information have declined to identify the organizers of the attacks because “they are afraid of their neighbours.”

His response underscores the difficulty of independently verifying allegations of security force involvement or the reported use of helicopters. Official sources willing to corroborate these claims are difficult to find. Until stronger evidence can be established, the allegations are easily dismissed by authorities, which also means meaningful steps may not be taken to protect Christian communities from these threats.
