How much worse can things become for Merz?
Failing German Chancellor Friedrich Merz got to a point where polls show 78% of voters rejecting him – a historical record.
His CDU party took a sound beating at the Saxony election, with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) on the cusp of governing its first state.
The new national poll released yesterday shows AfD hitting 30% popularity for the first time, an incredible 10-point surge after the 20,8% they got in the 2025 federal election.
That’s 10 full points ahead of Merz’s party at 20%.
Key state elections in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are coming up in five days.
And yet, up until yesterday, Merz was planning to fly to New York to grandstand alongside his Globalist pals in the United Nations.
But this was not to be.

Yesterday (15), it emerged that Merz has canceled his planned trip to New York under mounting pressure from his own party.

Reuters reported:
“Merz faces growing internal criticism following his Christian Democrats’ (CDU) poor performance this month in Saxony-Anhalt, where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) came close to securing an outright majority in a state election.
[…] ‘Contrary to original plans, the chancellor will not travel to New York next week, as his presence is required in Berlin’, the source said.”

“Confidence in the chancellor has also weakened within his own party. A weekend INSA poll found that a majority of CDU supporters no longer believe Merz is the right person for the job, while 78% of the wider public said the same.”
The Telegraph reported:
“A party source also said Mr Merz’s conservatives have called a special meeting for Sunday to coordinate the CDU response to upcoming votes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin, to chart the party’s course with support at a record low and to demonstrate unity behind Mr Merz’s leadership.
[…] Despite facing record-low approval ratings, Mr Merz refused to resign following the defeat, saying although he was ‘unsettled’ by the result, he was determined to serve out his four-year term.
The AfD is expected to win the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania vote on Sept 20. A loss for the CDU is likely to intensify pressure on Mr. Merz even further.”
