Canada’s Liberal Government Pushes Bill Allowing Doctors to Euthanize Unwitting Dementia Patients

Canada’s Liberal government has introduced legislation that would allow doctors to euthanize unwitting dementia patients.

The bill, introduced Tuesday, would allow Canadians to request euthanasia in advance, meaning doctors could carry out the procedure after a patient becomes incapable of providing informed consent.

Justice Minister Sean Fraser said the legislation would ensure that people diagnosed with incurable illnesses could have their wishes respected even if their condition deteriorates.

He insisted that the government would introduce safeguards to prevent patients from being pressured into ending their lives.

The proposal marks another expansion of Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) program, which allows the euthanasia of vulnerable and seriously ill patients.

Under the proposed legislation, patients would have to authorize euthanasia while mentally competent.

Doctors would then assess whether the conditions specified in their advance request had been met.

The legislation also addresses the contentious question of patients who subsequently resist the procedure.

Critics have warned that the proposal would move Canada further toward involuntary euthanasia, another term for state-sponsored murder.

Dementia Justice Canada founder Heather Campbell Pope also questioned whether vulnerable patients would have adequate representation when doctors and family members decide whether to proceed.

The debate follows allegations surrounding the death of 83-year-old Brigitte Stegemann.

Stegemann’s family claims she was euthanized against her will, with her stated desires complicated by her declining mental faculties.

The Liberal government is simultaneously seeking to prevent MAID from being extended to people suffering solely from mental illness, following years of controversy over the planned expansion.

Canada legalized medically assisted dying in 2016 and has since expanded eligibility in 2021 to include some patients whose deaths were not reasonably foreseeable.

There have since been countless tragic and disturbing cases of people with minor illnesses being encouraged or allowed to end their lives.

A report back in 2024 found that euthanasia is responsible for around five percent of total deaths across the country.

Euthanasia Now Responsible for 1 in 20 Deaths in Canada

The latest legislation would still leave individual provinces with some authority over how advance requests are implemented.
