Defense Department’s Efforts To Combat AI Bias Don’t Go Far Enough

Google’s difficulty in mitigating bias from their artificial intelligence systems – even after explicitly going to great lengths to minimize bias – spells trouble for the Department of Defense. Bias can cause AI tools to irrevocably malfunction and derail AI development. Google recently paused Gemini, their largest and most capable AI model, from generating images after it created historically inaccurate and offensive images of people. Google explained that their attempts to design a less biased, more inclusive image generation tool caused the model to malfunction instead.

This is especially concerning as the Defense Department plans to leverage AI at scale, including for training simulations, intelligence analysis, recruiting personnel, translating documents, drafting policy, and even powering autonomous weapons. If the U.S. continues to prioritize the speed of AI development over safety, biased AI systems will ultimately slow the adoption rate, ceding the country’s technical edge to China.

Biased AI systems are ultimately dangerous. They make mistakes or generate inaccurate assessments leading to poor decision making or even system failures that harm people. Unanticipated AI failures could cause problems ranging from erroneous intelligence reporting to inaccurate targeting.

In the Defense Department, the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) is tasked with accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies across the national security ecosystem. CDAO’s Responsible AI team is tackling the problem of biased AI models by instituting a “bias bounty” program, which recruits the public to identify instances of bias in its large language models, starting with chat bots, in exchange for a cash prize.

By identifying bias in generative AI tools, the Pentagon hopes to understand the benefits and risks posed by these systems in order to implement safeguards. Mitigating the risks is crucial as the U.S. increasingly relies on AI development to provide warfighters with a competitive edge over its adversaries.

Relying on infrequent, small-scale public participation programs for identifying AI bias is inadequate because it assumes bias is easily detectable and does not account for the way biased outputs morph overtime, even after developers implement “fixes.” Biased AI systems disproportionately disadvantage certain groups especially when AI model training data is under representative of reality or already reflect existing biases.

Even more concerning are failures in AI-powered weapons targeting. AI systems could inadvertently select targets that violate rules of engagement such as women and children noncombatants. Recent reports accuse two IDF artificial intelligence targeting systems of increasing civilian casualties in Gaza by purposefully targeting Hamas operatives at home and erroneously identifying individuals as militants even when they had no or very tenuous links to these groups.

Policymakers, military officials, and private industry increasingly frame AI development as an arms race with China because Beijing hopes to leverage AI to enhance its power and gain a strategic advantage over the U.S. and its allies. Substantial ethical issues and discrimination as a result of AI bias should be enough to give lawmakers pause.

Overfocus on development speed sidelines real concerns over AI safety. Holding AI to high ethical standards is not an impediment to progress. Rather, it ensures greater system success that is essential for broad trust and adoption.

Removing bias requires more than technical solutions alone. In addition to periodic bias testing to ensure the models are operating properly, the Defense Department should provide and expedite clearances for data scientists and others involved in training AI models, so they have access to larger portions of datasets. Greater access allows those most knowledgeable about AI systems to spot instances where the model is producing biased outputs and correct mistakes more easily.

Operators of these tools should receive more extensive training programs that include instruction on identifying biased outputs enshrining the practice of not blindly trusting the system results. These tools are not perfect, and operators must know when and how to question or override a decision suggested by AI. The DoD should mandate their developers follow CDAO’s Responsible AI Toolkit that aligns with the DoD’s AI Ethical Principles and continuously evaluate and update the framework to keep pace with rapid technological advancement.

Finally, the U.S. should invest greater funding into STEM programs for underrepresented groups and communities. Only 26% of people in computing are women, and women only make up 18% of researchers at lead AI conferences. Representation for people of color is even worse, with less than 7% of employees at lead technology companies being Black or Hispanic. Greater access to STEM education creates a more diverse workforce and this diversity is essential for creating less biased AI systems. These new perspectives disrupt organizational group think and echo chambers, foster creative problem solving, and promote innovation.

Short-sighted focus on AI development speed over safety could spell disaster for the Defense Department. If the United States hopes to shape the future of the 21st century, it must make minimizing AI bias a top priority.

Mount Everest Pioneer George Mallory’s Last Letter Revealed After Being Held Secret for Over 100 Years

Legendary Mount Everest pioneer George Mallory’s final letter to his wife has been published after being held secret for over 100 years.

The letter from Mallory, published by his alma mater, Cambridge University, expressed the difficulties he faced during his final expedition.

In the letter, Mallory told his wife, “Darling, I wish you the best I can – that your anxiety will be at an end before you get this – with the best news, which will also be the quickest.”

“It is 50-to-one against us, but we’ll have a whack yet and do ourselves proud. Great love to you. Ever your loving, George,” added Mallory.

Mallory disappeared in 1924 along with his climbing partner Andrew Irvine, 22, during their expedition to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

In 1999, Mallory’s body was discovered below the peak, but it’s unknown whether he died before or after he reached the summit.

Irvine’s body has never been discovered.

Per CBS:

In his final letter to his wife before he vanished on Mount Everest a century ago, George Mallory tried to ease her worries even as he said his chances of reaching the world’s highest peak were “50 to 1 against us.”

The letter, digitized for the first time and published online Monday by his Cambridge University alma mater, expressed a mix of optimism, exhaustion and the difficulties his expedition encountered on their quest to be the first party to conquer the peak.

“Darling I wish you the best I can – that your anxiety will be at an end before you get this – with the best news. It is 50 to 1 against us but we’ll have a whack yet & do ourselves proud.”

It remains a mystery whether Mallory, who once famously said he wanted to conquer Everest “because it’s there,” and climbing partner Andrew Irvine reached the summit and died on the way down or never made it that far. Mallory’s body was found 75 years later far below the peak, but Irvine’s has never been located.

Biden Blocks New Alaska Oil and Gas Leases to Save Polar Bears, Caribou, Blocks Key Mining Road

The Biden administration announced two major wins for the far-left environmentalists last Friday: it will block new oil and gas leasing on 13 million acres in Alaska’s federal petroleum reserve to protect local wildlife caribou and polar bears, and it will stop development on an access road for mining companies that was previously approved by the Trump administration.

Biden announced the government is blocking the development of the “Ambler Road,” a 211-mile access road that would have given mining companies the ability to access leased land for mineral development.

The far-left environmentalist group the Sierra Club called the decision a “major victory.”

This Biden decision bans oil and gas drilling in nearly half of the Alaska petroleum reserve. The reserve is 23 million acres of public land for a national emergency oil supply originally intended for the US Navy, created in the early 1920s.

Even though pump prices have remained high for most Americans, and the high prices affect the working poor the most, Biden has been regularly canceling and terminating energy development leases, as he did several times in 2023.

Alaska’s entire Congressional delegation criticized the decisions last week.

“Closing off NPR-A is a huge step back for Alaska, failing to strike a balance between the need for gap oil and natural gas and legitimate environmental concerns, and steamrolling the voices of many Alaska Natives in the decision-making process,” Rep. Mary Peltola, D-Alaska, said in a joint statement issued by the three-member delegation. “The Ambler Road decision is premature, as real conversations among stakeholders in the region are ongoing. Alaska has a wealth of natural resources that can be responsibly developed to help boost domestic manufacturing and innovation — in the end, it should be up to Alaskans to decide what they want developed in their regions.”

This comes on the heels of the news that U.S. crude oil prices have risen 15% year to date due to stronger demand, tighter supplies due to OPEC+ production cuts, and mounting political risks in the Mideast and Eastern Europe.

The size of the land Biden blocked from development, 13 million acres, or 20,000 square miles, is a little smaller than the footprint of West Virginia.

The primary energy development in the area is the ConocoPhillips-owned Willow project. ConocoPhillips’ two largest stakeholders are the Vanguard Group and the controversial BlackRock investment group, who each own about 9% of the firm. The ConocoPhillips project is scheduled to open in 2029, it will now not have any competitors.

According to ConocoPhillips, the Willow project will create $8-17 billion more in federal tax revenues, thousands of jobs, and produce 600 million barrels of oil over the project’s lifetime. The price of a barrel of oil is roughly $87, so the total value of the project would be $52.2 billion.

John Podesta, senior adviser to the president for international climate policy, said the pair of decisions would conserve Alaska lands for generations.

John Podesta, advisor to Joe Biden, known fan of Italian cuisine

“The Biden-Harris administration has now protected more than 41 million acres of lands and waters across the country, leaving a huge mark on the history of American conservation,” Podesta said in a statement.

Elsewhere, Biden’s administration promised the public that they would take all steps necessary to keep gas prices low.

Alaska Natives criticize the drilling ban in the Western Arctic as it impacts a significant portion of the NPR-A land. Nearly all Alaskan citizens typically receive an annual check for their share of state dividends from energy proceeds, a program known as the “Permanent Fund Dividend.” Last year the checks were for $1,312.

The decision aims to protect animal species from so-called “global warming” affecting the Arctic. Elites are obsessed with ‘saving’ the Arctic, even though their predictions about ice melt, extinction, rising sea levels, never come true.

To control prices during the outset of the Russia-Ukraine war, Biden sold half of America’s ‘Strategic Petroleum Reserve’ and has struggled to refill it due to rising gas prices.

DEVELOPING: Judge Merchan Weighs Whether Trump Violated Gag Order in ‘Hush Money’ Trial

President Trump was back in court on Tuesday morning in Alvin Bragg’s lawfare ‘hush money’ trial in New York City.

Prosecutors last week filed a motion to hold President Trump in contempt for ‘violating’ Judge Merchan’s expanded gag order which barred the former president from criticizing his family members.

Judge Merchan on Tuesday held a hearing on Bragg’s request to hold Trump in contempt of court and fined for violating his gag order. The judge said he is going to wait to rule on whether Trump violated the gag order. It is unclear when he will actually issue the ruling.

According to AP, President Trump’s lawyer Todd Blanche told the court that Trump “is being very careful to comply” with the gag order.

Judge Merchan blasted Todd Blanche: “You’re losing all credibility.”

Trump slammed Judge Merchan during a break on Tuesday.

“HIGHLY CONFLICTED, TO PUT IT MILDLY, JUDGE JUAN MERCHAN, HAS TAKEN AWAY MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH. EVERYBODY IS ALLOWED TO TALK AND LIE ABOUT ME, BUT I AM NOT ALLOWED TO DEFEND MYSELF. THIS IS A KANGAROO COURT, AND THE JUDGE SHOULD RECUSE HIMSELF!” Trump said on Truth Social.

Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s prosecutors last Thursday claimed Trump violated the court’s gag order ‘seven more times.’

Bragg’s office last Monday asked the court to impose a $1,000 sanction for each of the 3 prior Truth Social posts, order Trump to take them down, and warn him that further violations would result in jail time.

The DA’s office was referring to was related to a New York Post article bashing Michael Cohen as a “serial perjurer.”

Last Thursday, prosecutors claimed Trump violated the gag order seven more times since Monday when he quoted Fox News host Jesse Watters.

Trump posted to Truth Social last Wednesday: “They are catching undercover Liberal Activists lying to the Judge in order to get on the Trump Jury,” Jesse Watters

Seattle Children’s Hospital Withdraws Business from Texas in Response to Investigation Into “Gender Transition” Treatments for Minors

In a significant development, Seattle Children’s Hospital has decided to stop providing gender-transition procedures and treatments for Texas minors.

This decision comes following a request from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for the hospital to submit records related to gender-affirming treatments administered to minors, as part of an ongoing investigation.

In September 2023, Texas enacted SB 14, a law prohibiting the administration of hormone therapy and surgical interventions aimed at facilitating gender transitions for individuals under the age of 18.

Since then, the Attorney General’s Office has been vigilant in enforcing the law and ensuring that no entity, within or outside of Texas, contributes to its violation.

In November of the previous year, Attorney General Paxton initiated an investigation into Seattle Children’s Hospital’s activities after it was found that the hospital provided gender transition-related medical interventions to Texas minors at their facility in Seattle, Washington.

It was also reported that the hospital was transmitting prescriptions for hormone-disrupting drugs back to patients and pharmacies within Texas borders.

Rather than comply with the Texas Attorney General’s office’s request for documentation and further information regarding these practices, Seattle Children’s chose to pursue legal action against the state.

Despite this, the hospital has maintained its stance on providing gender-affirming surgeries, stating on its website its unique position in offering such surgeries.

“Seattle Children’s is the only pediatric academic medical center with fellowship-trained plastic surgeons who provide gender-affirming surgery in our region — Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho,” the website says. “We treat teens and young adults who are patients of Seattle Children’s Gender Clinic. We also accept patients who are receiving gender-affirming care through providers outside of Seattle Children’s.”

While the hospital claims to only perform genital surgeries on patients over 18, the Seattle Children’s Gender Clinic page states that they accept patients as young as nine years old for other treatments.

The page says that they offer puberty blockers, “gender-affirming hormones,” “gender-affirming surgeries,” “brief mental health support,” and a partnership with the Autism Center.

Speaking to the Daily Caller, a spokesperson for the hospital stood by the practice of mutilating minors.

“We will continue to offer evidence-based gender-affirming care because it is lifesaving care and is aligned with our mission to help every patient live their healthiest and most fulfilling life possible,” a Seattle Children’s spokesman told the Daily Caller. “Seattle Children’s providers are specifically trained to care for the unique needs of adolescents, teens and young adults. This allows our team to offer personalized care that is tailored to meet each patient’s individual needs and goals.”

However, this stance has now changed. After months of legal and public relations battles, Seattle Children’s Hospital has withdrawn its business registration in Texas, effectively ending its ability to conduct any business within the state.

“The parties have agreed that Seattle Children’s Hospital shall voluntarily withdraw its registration to Transact Business in the State of Texas and shall file a certificate of withdrawal with the Texas Secretary of State pursuant to section 9.011 of the Texas Business Organizations Code on or before April 26, 2024,” according to the agreement.

Attorney General Paxton commented on the resolution, stating, “Seattle Children’s Hospital appeared to break Texas law and initially tried to evade accountability when investigated. When we merely began asking questions, they decided to leave the State of Texas and forfeit the opportunity to do business here. Let this make our position clear: medical providers in Texas must abide by our laws. In Texas, we vigorously protect children from damaging, experimental ‘gender transition’ treatments that can have life-altering negative consequences.”

“Gender transitioning minors is child abuse. Child abuse will not be tolerated on my watch,” Paxton wrote on X.

Last year, Paxton also succeeded in compelling the largest children’s hospital in the United States to discontinue hormone therapy and other transgender care for minors.

Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) CEO Mark Wallace announced the decision in a memo to staff, citing compliance with a new Texas law and ongoing investigations as key factors.

The announcement comes on the heels of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launching an investigation into TCH last May 19, to determine if the hospital is “actively engaging in illegal behavior and performing “gender transitioning” procedures on children.”

“I’ve been clear that any ‘gender transitioning’ procedures that hurt our children constitute child abuse under Texas law,” said Attorney General Paxton.

“Recent reports indicate that Texas Children’s Hospital may be unlawfully performing such procedures, and my office it is working to uncover the truth. I am committed to investigating any entity in our state to ensure that our children are protected. Though many unhinged activists compromising the healthcare field think otherwise, children are not to be treated as science experiments. Doctors and hospitals should not be pushing mutilative and irreversible ‘gender transitioning’ procedures that will negatively impact innocent children for the rest of their lives.”

Florida Governor DeSantis: Satanists Can’t be Part of School Chaplain Program “We’re Not Playing Those Games in Florida”

On Thursday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 931  into law.

The law allows school districts and charter schools to “adopt a policy to authorize volunteer school chaplains to provide support, services, and programs to students as assigned by the district school board or charter school governing board.”

The Governor also made it clear that the program will not be imposed upon public school students, sharing that it is “totally voluntary for a parent or a student to participate.”

In subsequent comments, DeSantis made it clear that the new measure would not open the door for members of the Satanic Temple to be public school chaplains.

The Florida Phoenix reports, “Some have said that if you do a school chaplain program that, somehow, you’re going to have satanists running around in all our schools. We’re not playing those games in Florida. That is not a religion. That is not qualified to be able to participate in this. So, we’re going to be using common sense when it comes to this. You don’t have to worry about it.”

Satanists are displeased.

The Christian Post reports the co-founder of The Satanic Temple responded to the new law with a request to debate DeSantis.

Lucien Greaves, co-founder of The Satanic Temple, which oversees After School Satan Clubs and planned to take advantage of the law, argued in a series of social media posts summarizing his comments to media that DeSantis’ words “hold no authority” because the U.S. Constitution “guarantees equal treatment under the law.” The group has threatened to sue if its members were prohibited from participating in the chaplain program.

Greaves stressed DeSantis “invited Satanic chaplains into public schools, whether he likes it or not” because he is “not at liberty to amend the Constitution by fiat.” He also noted that The Satanic Temple is recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt religious organization.

After a call with DeSantis’ office on Friday, Greaves announced he instructed the organization’s Executive Director of Operations to send a formal proposal for a debate between DeSantis and Greaves.

The Satanic Temple has fought to hold After School Satan Clubs in school districts across the country, including Pennsylvania, Virginia, California, North Carolina, Ohio and Illinois.

Ben Bergquam Reports: Columbia Professors Come Out in Force to Support of Anti-Israel Protesters – Refuse to Condemn Hamas Killers – DISTURBING VIDEO

Columbia university staff overwhelming support the Pro-palestinian protesters and display their loyalty at graduation ceremonies.

Ben Bergquam from Real America’s Voice was reporting at Columbia University in New York City on Tuesday.

The staff on campus were wearing sashes in support of the Palestinians and against Isreal.  From the video it appears over two-thirds of the staff were wearing the sashes supporting Palestinians. The sash read “we support our students” meaning the Columbia staff supports the anti-Isreal mob that took over their campus.

Ben confronted staff but not one single professor or staff member would speak to Ben for some reason.

Numerous protesters were carrying flyers that read, “Unsuspend our students.”

Thank goodness Joe Biden is cancelling the loans for these university students.

Only one professor or staff member said he did not support the “Death to America” chants.

Unbelievable! Faculty members at Columbia University come out in support of terror supporting students! Only one said we shouldn’t support students chanting “Death to America” and I don’t even think he was faculty. The rest are either cowards or complicit. Everyone of these… pic.twitter.com/pOS01XdxDb

Pro-Palestinian, Anti-Israel, Protests Spread to Yale, UMichigan, NYU and Across America

Several days of protests, assaults on Jewish students, and chaos at Columbia University in New York City have now spread to other American college campuses. Columbia has since suspended two Palestinian groups, and a local rabbi has encouraged Jewish students to flee the campus.

Now, roughly 45 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested for ‘trespassing’ at Yale University, according to the New Haven Police Department. All were being released on mere promises to appear in court later, meaning they were released with zero bond to ensure they will reappear in court.

This comes in the wake of 108 pro-Palestinian demonstrators at Columbia University arrested for setting up a ‘tent city’ on the campus last week. Dozens arrested at pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Yale and New York University as student protests concerning Israel’s Gaza war continue.

Trespassing is indeed a crime, as is assault and disorderly conduct. And although hate speech is not in itself a crime, it’s a clear violation of a university’s code of conduct. Why is this so hard for our “elite” college administrators? @Columbia https://t.co/vkWPj6HLR5

— Dave Aronberg (@aronberg) April 22, 2024

A wide range of groups appear to be behind the campus protests and encampments.

The protests are focused on the disparity of the evolving conflict in the Middle East between Israel and the Palestinians. The October 7th terror attacks by Hamas on Israel and Israeli citizens killed an estimated 1,200 Israelis. Israel’s military response, invading the Gaza Strip to hunt down Hamas, has displaced millions and, according to Hamas, widely known for their lies and brutality, claims 34,000 lives have been lost so far.

CBS News claims that the spreading protests have left the nation’s colleges “on edge.”

The Anti-Defamation League has denounced the protests and protesters as supporting terror against Israel and violence on college campuses.

The University of Southern California took the unusual step of canceling a planned commencement speech by its 2024 valedictorian last week. Which has, yesterday, led to protests.

Earlier this month, a leaked call from the Anti-Defamation League indicated that the organized response of pro-Jewish and pro-Israeli groups in America will be to encourage the federal government to increase social media and official censorship to contain the spread of these ideas.

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder Says New Song is About Trump — Claims Former President Left People With ‘PTSD’

Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder says that the band’s new song is about former President Donald Trump and claims his presidency left “most thoughtful people” with PTSD.

The acoustic political song is titled “Wreckage” and is featured on Pearl Jam’s new album “Dark Matter.”

“There is a guy in the United States who is still saying he didn’t lose an election, and people are reverberating and amplifying that message as if it is true,” Vedder told The Times.

The musician continued, “Trump is desperate. I don’t think there has ever been a candidate more desperate to win, just to keep himself out of prison and to avoid bankruptcy. It is all on the line, and he’s out there playing the victim — at least they’re doing this to me, because if not they would be doing it to you — but you haven’t falsified your tax records. You don’t have classified information in your basement. So the song is saying, let’s not be driven apart by one person, especially not a person without any worthy causes.”

The interviewer noted, “Perhaps Trump’s time is passing” — even though he is the Republican presidential nominee and leading many polls.

“I can’t wait,” Vedder said. “Most thoughtful people are going through a bit of PTSD about it now, so maybe you’re right.”

Lyrics to the anti-Trump tune include:

Oh, visited by thoughts and not just in the night
That I no longer give a f-ck who is wrong and who’s right
This game of winner takes all and all means nothing left
Spoils go the victor and the other left for dead

Uh-huh, combing through the wreckage
Holding out, holding on
Combing through the wreckage
