The Luxury Multiplex Is What’s Wrong With America

The Luxury Multiplex Is What’s Wrong With America

Do you want to watch a movie or to live out a petit-bourgeois fantasy of Sardanapalan excess?

The summer is upon us, and no one is going to the movies.

Last weekend, the box-office charts were a study in sluggishness: The Garfield Movie was in the top spot with a paltry $14 million, and Furiosa: A Max Max Saga came in second with a pitiful $10 million. All told, the returns had declined 69 percent from the equivalent weekend last year, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

How to explain this state of cinematic lethargy? It would be nice to imagine that moviegoers have suddenly, out of nowhere, developed discerning standards. Perhaps audiences have finally grown tired of allegedly amusing animated features with paunchy felines. Maybe viewers have at last been worn out by violent visions of apocalyptic future worlds.

Instead, I wonder if the explanation is far more pedestrian: What if declining movie attendance has less to do with the movies than with the places where they are being exhibited?

Here, I write from some experience.

I have spent more hours in movie theaters than I would care to admit or is probably spiritually advisable. I was born in 1983, the peak of the multiplex era, and my earliest moviegoing experiences were in those cavernous facilities that were often adjacent to, and sometimes incorporated into, shopping malls.

Multiplexes befit the decade of material abundance that produced Ronald Reagan’s presidency, the movie Wall Street and the book The Art of the Deal. To a degree that must have seemed revolutionary at the time, multiplexes were truly full-service movie theaters. Breaking with the single-screen model of earlier movie theaters, multiplexes were engineered to house multiple screens—sometimes as many as twelve, twenty or more—that could show numerous movies concurrently throughout the day.

The complexes were designed on the hopeful assumption that they would receive heavy use. Undoubtedly the ubiquitous wall-to-wall dark carpeting in lobbies was chosen because it was more forgiving of soda spills and popcorn tip-overs; surely the concrete floors in most individual theaters were chosen for their ease of clean-up, too.

Going to a multiplex in the 1980s and ’90s was not like entering heaven—as Woody Allen once compared, in his lovely little movie Radio Days, the experience of walking into Radio City Music Hall—but it was a perfectly serviceable way to see a movie. Back then, multiplexes were functional, practical and largely inoffensive; some remnants of refinement, such as seats upholstered in some velvet-like material, remained.

The situation is far different today.

Multiplexes still dominate the moviegoing landscape, but they have lost their utility—their benign neutrality—in a desperate attempt, on the part of their owners, to make them more comfortable, relaxing and inviting. In fact, present-day multiplexes are none of these things. They are, instead, grotesque monuments to self-indulgence.

Ironically, many of the changes are predicated on creating a kind of faux-luxury experience. For instance, no longer can moviegoers buy a ticket, survey the theater and pick a seat. These days, most multiplexes insist on reserved seating that commits ticket-buyers to a particular seat ahead of the showing. This sounds fancy—like making dinner reservations, or getting box seats at the opera—but, in practice, it diminishes self-reliance; gone is the strength of character involved in “picking a better seat” just before the feature begins.

In a further bid for luxury, many multiplexes have traded traditional seating for “recliner”-style seating into which moviegoers can sink, sometimes so far back that they can prop their shoes on a footrest. Despite encouraging spectators to position themselves virtually in a supine position, these recliners are often outfitted with trays intended for the placement of not just popcorn or candy (which is OK) but actual food on the order of burgers or chicken tenders (which is never, ever OK). The trays themselves, when swiveled in front of the occupant, render these recliners something akin to a child’s highchair.

These purported improvements to multiplexes suggest an attempt to tap into the American middle-class obsession with “eating out” that was defined in Paul Fussell’s trenchant 1983 book Class: A Guide Through the American Status System: “A fixation with both middles and proles, since it gives you a chance to play King and Queen for a Day, issuing orders, being waited on, affecting to be somebody.”

Yet, in the end, these innovations do not confer royal status on moviegoers—instead, they contribute to the infantilization of all of us. There we are, trapped in a recliner, satiated with cheap processed food and blasted by the latest would-be blockbuster.

What is keeping me from the movie theaters are the movie theaters. I wouldn’t want to see any of my favorite movies—Rear Window, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Bells of St. Mary’s, To Kill a Mockingbird—in such settings. In fact, now that I think about it, the only kind of movie that might be disposable enough to see under such circumstances is one starring Garfield.

Nigel Farage Has Reanimated British politics

Nigel Farage Has Reanimated British politics

He may not have a plan or a coherent ideological line, but he has energy.

Credit: Carl Court/Getty Images

Guess who’s back? Back again. Nigel’s back. Tell a friend.

Yes, having ruled out standing for Reform UK in Britain’s forthcoming elections, Nigel Farage has changed his mind. He will lead the right-wing populist party into the elections on July 4, and will become its parliamentary candidate for Clacton in Essex.

This has sounded the death knell for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party. The Conservatives have dipped further in the polls and now face the prospect of an historic wipeout. Keir Starmer’s Labour Party looks set to dominate parliamentary politics, with Reform predicted to win several seats and enter parliament as dissenting populist outsiders.

Farage’s announcement has shaken up an election campaign that had congealed into declinist goo. Sunak and Starmer are both awkward and uninspiring—with awkward and uninspiring policies on offer. To watch Britain’s debate between the pair was to watch Britain dying in front of you.

Farage, on the other hand, seethes with mischief and merriment. He uploaded a short video of himself out and about, grinning from ear to ear, with Eminem’s “Without Me” blaring in the background.

Now, one shouldn’t get swept up in the spectacle of it all. Why is Farage back? Less than two weeks ago, he was claiming that it was “not the right time” to stand. Oddly, part of his reasoning was the greater importance of the U.S. elections. “Important though the general election is,” he wrote,

the contest in the United States of America on November 5 has huge global significance. A strong America as a close ally is vital for our peace and security. I intend to help with the grassroots campaign in the USA in any way I can.

This seemed a bit strange at the time. (Did a patriot like Farage not believe that the British elections had “huge global significance”?) His reversal seems strange. It’s tempting to wonder if the turnabout had something to do with a perceived decline in Donald Trump’s prospects after his conviction on May 30.

One thing we can say with confidence is that Farage must have been convinced that the Conservatives were doomed. After being embarrassed in previous elections—when he failed to win a parliamentary seat—he would not have returned unless he felt like he was pushing on an open door. Autopsies of the Conservative campaign should not conclude that it was killed off by Farage. It was dying anyway, and he has just returned to dance on its grave.

Still, if Reform can enter parliament, that will transform politics on the right. Since 2016, and the success of the Leave campaign in the referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union, Britain has been unlike its continental neighbors in not having a more radical right-wing alternative to the center-right mainstream. The Conservatives did a good job convincing voters that they represented that alternative, before delivering record immigration and economic decline.

Farage has swaggered into the election campaign with bold words about “net zero” immigration and economic growth. He has made a deliberate attempt to appeal to younger voters, who have been disaffected by the Conservatives’ gerontocratic tendencies.

Now, the Conservatives will face a dilemma. Will they attempt to embrace the semi-mythical centre of British politics? Liberal Conservatives like Rory Stewart and David Gauke have spent years arguing that the Tories that tacked too far to the right—an argument that has always depended on a fixation with their words and not their deeds. It’s hard to imagine this being successful. What difference would there be between the Conservatives and Labour?

Then again, there would be risks to competing with Reform. As the outsiders, with less at stake institutionally, Reform will have no problem outflanking the Conservatives on the right. This could have the very healthy effect of broadening Britain’s Overton Window—making the unsayable sayable. That said, Reform would have to be responsible enough to focus on important issues and good policies or else the feud would descend into marginal squabbling—crass and off-putting.

“Responsible” is not a word commonly associated with Farage. He is a man who cares very much about the interests of Nigel Farage, which makes him politically and ideologically inconsistent. That he was more focused on Donald Trump than Reform as recently as May does not instill a lot of confidence that he has a long-term plan. The vagueness of his campaign promises also inspires the perception that he has not thought a great deal about what will happen after July 4. Hopes that Reform will exist as a right-wing challenge to the Conservatives should be tempered by the memory that Farage was “open-minded” about joining the Conservatives back in February.

Still, it would be childish to wallow in skepticism. The fact is that Farage’s charisma, ebullience and un-PC instincts have rejuvenated the British right—offering the hope that an alternative can rise out of the ashes of Conservative rule. Perhaps it will not be Reform. Perhaps the maverick Dominic Cummings—no friend of Farage—will launch his “anti-insider” party instead. But energy has to exist rather than bitterness and gloom, and Farage is nothing if not energetic.

You can tell that the left are concerned. They would not be gloating about childish antics like Farage being sprayed with beer and milkshakes on the campaign trail if they were not aware of the popularity that makes his chaotic public appearances possible in the first place.

Keir Starmer’s victory will not be comparable to Tony Blair’s triumph in 1997. Then, a charismatic, personable leader was taking charge in a time of relative economic good fortune. Now, a robotic leader will be taking charge in a time of shrinking prospects and institutional dysfunction. Right-wingers will have ample opportunities to earn support at the expense of Stony Blair—but they will need boldness and optimism. Whether or not that will be represented by Farage, he has created space for it.

All we needed was a little controversy.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin Thinks Trump Can Win the State in 2024: ‘Looks Like it’s in Play’

Recent polls have suggested that Trump and Biden are currently tied in Virginia. This is big news because a Republican hasn’t carried Virginia in a presidential race since 2004.

Biden won the state in 2020 and Hillary Clinton carried it in 2016.

Could that change this year? Virginia’s Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin seems to think so.

FOX News reports:

Governor says Trump could become the first GOP presidential candidate to win his state in 20 years

It’s been two decades since a Republican carried Virginia in the race for the White House.

You have to go back to then-President George W. Bush, who won the Commonwealth in his 2004 re-election victory.

Democrats have carried the state in four straight presidential elections, including President Biden’s 10-point victory over Donald Trump four years ago as he won the White House.

But GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin thinks the former president has a very good shot of ending the Republican losing streak in Virginia as Trump faces off this autumn with Biden in a 2024 election rematch.

“Let’s just begin by remembering where we were in 2020 when Joe Biden won Virginia by 10 points, and the fact that we’re having this discussion is a huge turn of events,” Youngkin said earlier this week in a Fox News Digital interview in New Orleans, as he attended a Republican Governors Association (RGA) conference.

Youngkin emphasized that “we’re here in June and there’s still a lot of water to go under the bridge, but Virginia looks like it’s in play and that’s pretty exciting.”

Even the FOX News poll, which always seems to lean left for some reason, has Trump tied with Biden in Virginia.

Virginia will be a state to watch on election night. If it gets called for Trump, that might be the whole game.

REPORT: Luxury Tower Being Built on Skid Row in Los Angeles to House Homeless People – Will Include a Gym, Cafe and Art Studio

Cities across the country are dealing with a large increase in their homeless populations, but the problem in Los Angeles dwarfs other locations.

The city is reportedly building a new tower to house the homeless on the notorious ‘Skid Row’ which will feature one-bedroom and studio apartments, a gym, a cafe, an art studio and more.

While the city should be congratulated for trying to address the homeless problem, one has to wonder if this is really the best approach.

The Daily Mail reports:

Homeless people on LA’s Skid Row to move into swanky new tower block fit with a gym, café and art studio

A multi-story tower block built on Los Angeles’s Skid Row, which is designed exclusively to house the homeless, is now open for leasing.

The Weingart Towers is a 278-unit fully-furnished residential building that has a gym, soundproofed music room, television lounge, café, and an art studio inside.

This month, the sprawling building is all set to become a ‘self-contained environment’ that will take in city-dwellers living on the streets.

New residents will be able to enjoy the swanky amenities, as well as appliance-filled renovated kitchens and wall-mounted televisions inside their apartment units.

The building, which was entirely funded by public sources, will also provide on-site case management and physical and mental health care – designed to help its new residents get their lives back on track.

Out of the building’s 278 units, 40 are also reserved for veteran households.

Some people are skeptical about the plan.

Why are we incentivizing homelessness in CA, without requiring that they submit to mental heath treatment and/or drug rehab? This makes as much sense as giving out free unlimited healthcare to illegal immigrants. https://t.co/CfYe67h3LY

Trump Raised a Stunning $12 Million in One Night This Week at Silicon Valley Event

Last week after the sham guilty verdict came down in New York City, Trump announced that he had raised a staggering $400 million.

This week, during a one night event in Silicon Valley, hosted by entrepreneur David Sacks, Trump raised another $12 million – in just one night.

The fact that people in blue Silicon Valley are stepping up to support Trump, post-NYC verdict, shows that the political narrative has shifted. No one could have imagined Trump getting this kind of support in such a blue area four years ago.

Breitbart News reported:

Trump Raises $12M at Silicon Valley Fundraiser Hosted by Venture Capitalist David Sacks

Former President Donald Trump raised $12 million at a Silicon Valley fundraiser in deep blue state California on Thursday, according to a member of the California Republican National Committee.

Harmeet Dhillon posted on X: “$12M raised tonight! Incredible support for @realDonaldTrump. Not an empty seat in the gorgeous home of @DavidSacks and Jacqueline. Thrilled to see the tech leaders stepping up!”

It was the first fundraiser since Trump’s conviction last week, illustrating the former president’s ability to raise funds and garner support despite Democrats’ best efforts to label him a “convicted felon” and hurt his candidacy…

The fundraiser was co-hosted by Sacks and fellow venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya. The two co-host the popular “All-In” podcast.

According to the Times, the initial goal of the fundraiser was $5 million — an amount that was exceeded by more than double. About 25 were expected to attend a dinner as part of the fundraiser, with another approximately 50 slated to attend a bigger reception.

In a lengthy post on Twitter/X, David Sacks explained his support for Trump:

Why I’m Backing President Trump

As many press accounts have reported, I’m hosting a fundraising event for President Donald J. Trump at my home in San Francisco this evening.

Over the last couple of years, I have hosted events for presidential candidates Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as well as several Congressional figures in both major parties. I give to many, but endorse few.

But today I am giving my endorsement to our 45th President, Donald J. Trump, to be our 47th President. My reasons rest on four main issues that I think are vital to American prosperity, security, and stability – issues where the Biden administration has veered badly off course and where I believe President Trump can lead us back.

Why I’m Backing President Trump

As many press accounts have reported, I’m hosting a fundraising event for President Donald J. Trump at my home in San Francisco this evening.

Over the last couple of years, I have hosted events for presidential candidates Ron DeSantis, Vivek…

Trump is gaining momentum (and cash) at an increasing pace. People clearly want change.

Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg to Testify Before House Judiciary Committee on Trump’s Hush-Money Trial

Credit: Stephanie Keith/Bloomberg via Getty Images

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has agreed to testify before the House Judiciary Committee regarding the recent hush-money trial of President Donald Trump.

This decision comes in response to a request from House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, who has been leading the charge against the politically motivated attacks on Trump and his allies.

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan called Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and Joe Biden‘s DOJ hatchet man Matthew Colangelo to testify before the Weaponization Committee on June 13 following the guilty verdict against Trump.

Bragg’s top prosecutor, Matthew Colangelo, previously worked in the Justice Department (a Biden appointee) and is a lifelong left-wing activist.

Biden sent Matthew Colangelo to New York to convict his main political opponent of non-crimes.

The jury then found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts after crooked judge Juan Merchan rigged the trial and allowed jurors to choose among three predicate crimes Trump committed.

In a letter to Chairman Jordan, Leslie Dubeck, Bragg’s general counsel, expressed the DA’s office’s commitment to cooperating with the committee’s investigation.

Read the letter obtained by Politico:

This responds to your letters dated May 31, 2024, inviting representatives of the New York County District Attorney’s Office to testify before the House Judiciary Committee Select Subcommittee in a public hearing about the work of this Office.

This Office is committed to voluntary cooperation. That cooperation includes making the District Attorney available to provide testimony on behalf of the Office at an agreed-upon date, and evaluating the propriety of allowing an Assistant District Attorney to testify publicly about an active prosecution to which he is assigned.

However, the proposed date that the Subcommittee selected without consulting the Office presents various scheduling conflicts. In addition, the Committee’s invitation has not made clear the scope of the proposed testimony; and trial court proceedings in People v. Trump are currently scheduled to continue through July 11, 2024.

The trial court and reviewing appellate courts have issued numerous orders for the purpose of protecting the fair administration of justice in People v. Trump, and to participate in a public hearing at this time would be potentially detrimental to those efforts.

The District Attorney’s Office therefore requests an opportunity to engage with Committee staff to identify a new hearing date, and to better understand the scope and purpose of the proposed hearing.

As with the prior inquiries from this Committee, we look forward to discussing with committee staff how the Office may be able to accommodate the Committee’s invitation while also protecting the integrity of an ongoing criminal prosecution and New York’s sovereign interests.

Former DNI and Liar James Clapper Refuses to Retract Letter on Hunter Biden’s ‘Laptop from Hell’ as Russian Disinformation

Image courtesy of New York Post

In October of 2020 – just days before the presidential election – 51 former intelligence officials signed and published a letter that baselessly decried the contents of Hunter’s ‘laptop from hell’ had “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.”

This was a lie.  They all knew it was a lie. The FBI and intelligence community knew in November 2019 that Hunter Biden’s laptop was authentic and contained evidence of hundreds of international crimes that included his father, Joe Biden.

In March, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) introduced a House Resolution that would strip security clearances from dozens of federal intelligence officials who signed on to the letter declaring the infamous Hunter Biden laptop as “Russian disinformation” shortly after it emerged leading up to the rigged 2020 election.

During the second presidential debate in 2020, Joe Biden and hack reporter Kristen Welker teamed up against President Donald Trump.

At one point, Joe Biden interrupted Welker for his planned response to the Hunter Biden Laptop from Hell scandal. Joe Biden told the audience that 50 intelligence leaders signed a letter saying the laptop was “Russian propaganda.”

The 51 spies who lied openly to the American public.

The laptop, which contains a trove of incriminating emails and images, is now confirmed to be authentic by an FBI agent involved in the Hunter Biden gun trial case.

FBI Special Agent Erika Jensen, who testified in court, confirmed that the laptop belonged to Hunter Biden and that its contents were genuine.

“When asked how she was able to confirm the laptop’s authenticity, Ms. Jensen said the serial number on the back of the laptop matches the serial number provided in Apple Inc.’s response to a subpoena for records.”

Despite this new revelation, James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence under the Obama regime, has refused to retract a letter he signed along with 51 other former officials.

When asked by Fox News Digital if he regretted signing the letter given the current evidence, Clapper simply responded with a resolute “No.”

According to Fox News, Clapper declined to publicly remove his name from the letter and would not concede that he and the other former intelligence officials who endorsed it should have waited longer before making such an impactful claim.

It’s worth recalling that Clapper said that he never suggested that Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian disinformation. Of course, that is a lie, and his name is listed on the signed letter along with 51 dishonest and untrustworthy intel officials.

These people should be in prison for interfering in an election.

Zelensky Fires Back at Russian Claims That He’s Illegitimate After His Mandate Ended in May: ‘Our People Are Free’

With his constitutional Presidential mandate expired, the ‘champion for democracy’, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky is facing the discredit by the Russian enemies.

Recently re-elected in a landslide, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s has been repeatedly clear about how Moscow sees the Ukrainian leader as lacking legitimacy.

For the first time, in a press conference in France alongside President Emmanuel Macron, Zelensky addressed the allegations and dismissed them.

Reuters reported:

President Volodymyr Zelensky said his legitimacy is recognized and determined by the Ukrainian people while criticizing that of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“‘President Zelensky’s legitimacy is recognized by the people of Ukraine. Our people are free. Putin’s legitimacy is recognized only by comrade Putin’, he told a press conference in Paris.”

As we see, the leader who cancelled elections sees himself as more legitimate than the one who held them and won in a landslide. So it goes.

The Presidential elections in Ukraine were supposed to take place this spring, and by late May, Zelensky’s five-year term of office ended.

Zelensky now is ruling by force of Martial law in his country.

“However, martial law introduced following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 bans any wartime election. The constitution says the president serves until a newly elected one takes office.

Putin claimed several times that Zelensky is illegitimate after his five-year term ended this May.”

Putin says that the only Ukrainian authority Russia recognizes as of now is the speaker of Parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk.

But Western leaders – who are after all Ukraine’s sponsors and handlers – have not questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy.

Zelensky’s response comes days after Putin started claiming that presidential power should be shifted to speaker of Ukraine’s parliament Stefanchuk.

It is perhaps not a great sign that Zelensky is now talking of himself in the third person. Kyiv Independent reported him as saying.: “It is the people of Ukraine who elect him, and I am very grateful for their support. Our people are free. This is what we are fighting for.”

The latest presidential election should have been held on March 31, 2024, with Zelensky’s term would ending on May 20.

Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk also dismissed Putin’s claims about Zelensky’s legitimacy; “Volodymyr Zelensky remains and will remain Ukraine’s president until the end of martial law. All this is in accordance with Ukraine’s Constitution and laws.”

Former Trump White House Chief of Staff Says He Believes Trump Will Select Dr. Ben Carson as VP (VIDEO)

Sky News Australia recently interviewed Mick Mulvaney, the former White House Chief of Staff under the Trump administration, asking him whom he believes Trump will select as his Vice President.

In the interview, when asked who he believes Trump will pick as his vice president, Mulvaney said, “I’m giving you the winner right now; I’m telling you it’s going to be Ben Carson.”

Mulvaney continued, “The one element I think Ben Carson has that none of the other six people on the list have is I don’t think Ben Carson wants to be president; I don’t think he wants to run for president.”

“The 2028 election starts the next day after the 2024 election. I don’t think Donald Trump wants anybody in that White House running for President on day one of his second term. That’s why I keep coming back again to Ben Carson. They know each other, they like each other, he’s trustworthy, he’s loyal,” added Mulvaney.

Per Sky News Australia:

Former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney says Donald Trump’s Vice-President is “going to be Ben Carson”.

The Associated Press is reporting Donald Trump’s Vice-Presidential candidates include Doug Burgum, Marco Rubio, J.D. Vance, Tim Scott, Elise Stefanik and Ben Carson.

“We don’t really have betting markets on this in the United State,” Mr Mulvaney told Sky News Australia.

“If they have them in Australia, I’m giving you the winner right now – I’m telling you it’s going to be Ben Carson.

“The one element I think Ben Carson has that none of the other six people on the list have is I don’t think Ben Carson wants to be president; I don’t think he wants to run for president.”

Deranged Drag Queen Speaks at Texas Democratic Convention, Pushes Trans Youth Propaganda (VIDEO)

A deranged drag queen named ‘Brigitte Bandit’ promoted trans propaganda at the Texas Democrat Convention this weekend.

Part of Brigitte’s agenda was promoting drag queen story hour for children.

And she’s proud of it.

“I’m a product of the Texas public school system. I have worked with children for over a decade, and I am now a full-time drag queen in Austin, Texas. Sometimes I read books to children in drag,” the drag queen said.

It is frightening to any parent to think that this person has worked with children for over a decade.

The disturbed individual was not finished. She continued to push for “gender-affirming care” for children.

“We have a duty to protect our most marginalized communities. Trans kids deserve to grow into healthy adults,” the drag queen continued.

Simply put, these activists are pushing policies that destroy children’s lives. The Democrat party has become so extreme that they are more interested in LGBTQ propaganda than actually protecting kids and allowing them to live normal lives.

This drag queen even mentioned “free Palestine” in “her” speech. “She” does not realize what would happen if she was in Palestine dressed like that.

“Free Palestine, long live Texas drag, protect trans kids, and happy pride month everybody,” the drag queen continued.
