Playing Politics With Crime in California

California’s fierce political battle over crime and retail theft faces a key test this week as divided Democrats in the legislature address efforts by Gov. Gavin Newsom and his allies to undermine a public-safety ballot initiative.

The ballot initiative would overhaul Proposition 47, a law voters approved in 2014 that lowered certain theft and drug crimes from felonies to misdemeanors partly as a way of reducing prison overcrowding.

Newsom was among the first elected officials to support Proposition 47, a ballot initiative written by reform-minded George Gascon, who was then the district attorney in San Francisco. (In an unusual move, Gascon is now the DA in Los Angeles.)

But the pendulum has now swung in the other direction, with critics blaming Prop 47 for the steep rise in retail theft and smash-and-grab “mob” robberies of both high-end department stores and convenience stores that have plagued retailers across the state.

Californians for Safer Communities, a bipartisan group made up of law enforcement officials, elected officials, and businesses, including Walmart and Target, collected more than 900,000 signatures in support of a ballot initiative that would reform Prop 47 by increasing penalties for criminals. In early June, the initiative qualified for the November ballot, a move Newsom and liberal supporters in the state legislature opposed.

Instead of letting voters decide its fate, Newsom and his allies, which includes Assembly and Senate leaders, pushed a raft of public safety bills aimed at addressing organized retail theft, car break-ins, and other crimes. They are also working hard to thwart a separate ballot initiative sponsored by the California District Attorneys Association, which has attracted widespread Republican and law enforcement support.

Democrats in the state Assembly added “inoperability” clauses to the proposed public safety bills to prevent them from going into effect if voters approve the ballot initiative aimed at reforming Prop 47. They contend that such clauses are needed to ensure that the law is consistent.

Critics of the move argue that the Democrats’ “poison pill” measure is designed solely to circumvent California’s storied referendum process. Instead of letting voters determine the ballot initiative’s fate, Newsom and his allies are trying to undermine it apparently because they fear it could attract strong support – with the added impact of helping Republicans in key Congressional races this fall.

“Democrats need to stop playing politics with public safety and let voters decide on fixing Prop. 47,” Assembly Republican Leader James Gallagher said in a statement. “These poison pills show that Democrats aren’t serious about ending the crime wave – they just want to look like they’re doing something because their years-long support for criminals has become a political liability.”

The machinations to undermine a ballot initiative on crime came the same week the California Supreme Court unexpectedly rejected another referendum that had attained enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot but which Democrats opposed. The court stopped a sweeping proposal that would have made it far more difficult for lawmakers to raise taxes and fees across the state. The justices unanimously ordered that the measure be kept off the ballot, finding it unconstitutional – even though it was an effort to amend California’s Constitution.

Republicans and conservative activists who backed and financed the initiative, which they say had collected more than 1.4 million signatures, are fuming over the move. Carl DeMaio, a candidate for state Assembly and chairman of the group that helped collect the anti-tax initiative signatures, said the state liberal justices sided with “corrupt politicians” to strip citizens of their rights to qualify propositions for the ballot.

Several other ballot initiatives aimed at increasing taxes are slated for the November ballot, and now citizens won’t have a countermeasure to vote on, he said. “The bottom-line remains: Californians cannot afford our state’s high taxes and cost of living – and until we fix the cost crisis, Californians will continue to flee this state,” DeMaio tweeted.

Regarding Democratic leaders’ efforts to thwart the Prop 47 reform measures, Republicans got a surprise assist from several normally skeptical journalists. George Skelton, the longtime Los Angeles Times columnist and dean of the California press corps, wrote a column last week headlined: “Stop playing politics on retail theft.”

“…Democrats cynically intend to insert a ‘poison bill’ that would automatically kill their own legislation if a rival tough-on-crime ballot measure is approved by voters in November,” he wrote. “To normal people, that must seem bizarre.”

“Democrats fear the ballot measure so much they’re offering its backers an offer they can’t refuse,” Skelton added. “At least that’s the Democrats’ hope. The message: Take what you can get immediately from the legislation – or risk losing it if the ballot measure passes.”

Criticism only increased over the week after CBS New California broke a story revealing that Newsom’s chief of staff would not negotiate to strengthen the Democratic package of crime bills unless the coalition backing the Prop 47 reform ballot initiative agreed to postpone that effort.

In leaked emails, Newsom Chief of Staff Dana Williamson told Greg Totten, the coalition’s lead negotiator, that Democrats would be willing to negotiate on its package of crime bills – but only if the matter was tabled until 2026. “As I noted previously, our focus is on amending Proposition 47 on the 2024 ballot,” Totten replied. “If the administration is prepared to consider an amendment of Proposition 47 on the 2024 ballot, then we are happy to meet.”

Williamson then abruptly cut Totten off. “If that’s your position, then I agree, there’s nothing to talk about.” She added, “It’s really amazing how you are incapable of taking a win. And the consultants you’re working with haven’t won anything in a decade. Good luck.”

Republicans and journalists aren’t the only ones who find the inoperability clauses disingenuous. At least three Democratic state lawmakers removed their names from retail theft bills included in the package after the clauses were added, and district attorneys and law enforcement associations in their districts pulled their support.

Assemblyman Kevin McCarty, who chairs the Public Safety Committee, yanked his support from the retail theft bill package because of the added inoperability clauses.

“Unfortunately, I can’t support the retail theft package, which contains my Retail Theft Accountability bill, AB 1794, with the poison pill non-operative amendments included,” McCarty noted. McCarty is running for mayor of Sacramento and has positioned himself more to the center while facing a progressive opponent.

Democratic state Sen. Alvarado-Gil and Assemblywoman Esmeralda Soria, who both represent the more conservative Central Valley, also withdrew their names as co-authors of retail theft bills included in the package.

“I oppose the amendments to these two bills, and I was not consulted about them prior,” Alvarado-Gil said in her weekly newsletter to constituents. “Let me be clear – I do support the Prop 47 reform initiative and believe the voters have the right to vote on this. This is not about the policy; it’s about the politics.”

Meanwhile, the Democratic leadership also faces opposition to both the retail theft legislative package and the ballot initiative from the progressive wing of the party, which opposes any criminal justice reforms that will result in increased incarceration.

“The [Democratic] leadership here has gotten a little bit too far out front of their troops,” GOP Sen. Roger Niello told RealClearPolitics in an interview Friday. “I know a lot of members of their caucus didn’t even know about this amendment move and only heard about it over the [previous] weekend.”

A spokeswoman for Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas did not respond to a request for comment about the level of Democratic support for the amended legislative package. This bill was also amended to include an urgency clause, which means it goes into effect immediately. Yet to do so would require a two-thirds majority of the Assembly and Senate. Sacramento insiders say the urgency is needed because of another deadline.

Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta faces a Thursday deadline to provide a title and summary for the ballot initiative and is poised to characterize the proposition as one that would kill the legislature’s anti-crime reform bills. He can only do so, however, if the retail theft package with the inoperability clauses passes with a supermajority this week before the deadline.

Some California political observers assume Newsom is trying to keep Prop 47 intact to protect his political legacy for any future White House run. But others believe Democratic leaders fear the more immediate political fallout – that the tough-on-crime ballot initiative could help turn out more Republican voters this fall, giving GOP candidates for the House of Representatives an edge in tight election contests that could determine which party holds the majority.

“What the Democrats are doing has gotten the Sacramento Bee editorial board, which is to the left of Mao, to agree with Republicans in the legislature,” Rob Stutzman told RCP. “This is absolutely raw politics. This is all about Democrats doing everything in the world to keep this issue off the ballot in November because of how it could affect congressional races and, therefore, the balance of who controls the House of Representatives.”

This past week, Dave Min, a state senator running in a tight battleground contest to replace Rep. Katie Porter this fall, joined his party’s push to undercut the ballot initiative by supporting the addition of the “poison-pill” amendments. Min, who authored a piece of the public safety package, has joined the Democratic leadership in a press conference in which they unveiled their strategy to add the inoperability clause to the legislation.

Over the last week, Min also twice said he didn’t have a position on the Prop 47 reform ballot initiative because he had been too busy to read it.

“I’m sorry, and I’ll be honest, I have not had time to review the initiative,” Min said during an Appropriations Committee meeting while the amendments were being added. “I’ve got a lot on my plate these days. At the point in time when the ballot is finalized, I’m going to take a look at all the initiatives on the ballot and take a look at them.”

Min’s position is a hire-wire act in his Orange County district, where prominent law enforcement officials, including Sheriff Don Barnes, vigorously back the ballot initiative. It also risks highlighting Min’s DUI conviction last year.

“Dangerous Dave Min puts criminals ahead of victims because he is a criminal,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Ben Petersen said in a statement. “Min earns a special spot in the hall of shame shilling for these poison pills while on probation himself.”

If the Democratic retail theft package with the amendments manages to pass this week, Skelton says Bonta has a tough decision to make – whether or not to “doctor up” the bill title and summary to undermine its ability to pass and risk “tarnishing his image by looking like just another hack politician.”

Niello is watching Bonta closely because he has long tried to transfer the responsibility of writing proposition titles and summary statements from the attorney general to an independent legislative analyst.

“There’s been so many blatantly biased statements made, and this whole strategy that [Democratic leaders] are pursuing is dependent upon the attorney general rewriting it in a negative light,” Niello said.

SCOTUS Could Outlaw ‘Gender-Affirming Care’ for Minors Next Year

The Supreme Court is set to determine the constitutionality of a Tennessee law that bans gender-bending medical treatments for minors.

On Monday, the court acquiesced to the Biden administration’s request to take up United States v. Skrmetti, a case that involves two 16-year-olds and a 13 year-old who have received puberty blockers and other hormone therapy cocktails. The minors, their parents, and a doctor that treats patients with gender dysphoria filed a lawsuit against Tennessee officials in federal court to challenge the validity of the law.

The Tennessee law, passed in 2023, bans so-called gender-affirming care for minors while providing exemptions for hormone treatments for minors who were undergoing hormone therapy for other medical reasons or had already started hormone treatments before March 31, 2024. Violators could potentially lose their medical licenses.

The administration believes the Tennessee restrictions on certain transgender treatments for minors are unconstitutional. In her petition to the highest court, Solicitor General Elizabeth B. Prelogar claimed that while the law bans the treatments for gender questioning minors, it “leaves the same treatments entirely unrestricted if they are prescribed for any other purpose.”

Tennessee is one of more than 20 red states to enact protections for minors against hormone therapy and other gender-bending treatments. Laws in Idaho, which the Supreme Court previously allowed to go into effect, and Kentucky could be impacted by the ruling, which will likely come down in the summer of 2025.

In the meantime, the court will prepare to hear arguments sometime in the fall.

Another Us Tourist Killed by Elephant in Zambia – New Mexico Woman Was Pulled From Her Tour Group Vehicle and Trampled Upon

When it comes to American tourists, 2024 is not a good year for safaris in Zambia.

It has just arisen that ANOTHER US tourist has been killed by an elephant in Zambia.

The enraged gigantic beast pulled the middle-aged woman from her tour group’s vehicle and trampled her, local officials said.

The New York Post reported:

“Juliana Gle Tourneau, 64, of New Mexico, was with a group that had stopped near the Maramba Cultural Bridge in Livingstone due to traffic from an elephant herd when one of the animals attacked, Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka told the Zambian broadcaster ZNBC.

The elephant tossed Tourneau out of the group’s vehicle and trampled her to death.

Wednesday’s incident marked the second fatal elephant attack on a US tourist in Zambia this year: In March, another traveler was killed when an elephant charged at their truck and flipped it over.”

While this may only amount to bad luck, there is also concern that animal protection – which is a good thing – may be causing the elephant populations to swell – which would be a dangerous thing.

BBC reported:

“Zambian authorities have called on tourists to exercise extreme caution while observing wildlife around the country.

Zambia’s neighbors Zimbabwe and Botswana have also raised concern about increasing elephant populations in their respective countries.”

Earlier in March, another Safari in Africa “got way too real, and it ended with an overturned truck and a dead elderly American tourist, as a furious wild bull elephant charged at a group of tourists and a guide in the Jungle of Zambia.

An 80-year-old American woman ended up dying from her wounds.

The six tourists were doing a Safari with the group Wilderness Zambia, and were out on a photography tour when they came under attack by the enraged animal.”

MMA Fighter Proposes to Girlfriend After Losing Fight — Gets Brutally Rejected (VIDEO)

A mixed martial artist in the Czech Republic proposed to his girlfriend in the ring after losing his fight — and got brutally rejected.

Lukas Bukovaz got down on one knee immediately following his massive loss and got shot down in front of the 20,000-person crowd.

The fight had been two-on-one, with Bukovaz and his teammate Patrik Horvath taking turns fighting the winner. Despite the handicap, they both lost their successive fights.

As soon as he asked, the woman put her hand over her face in embarrassment.

“Based on everything that’s happened, I think probably not,” the woman said into the microphone. “I don’t think so.”

The crowd erupted in boos.

Bukovaz’s coaches appeared to try to throw water at her as she spoke.

The woman alleged that the fighter had been unfaithful, but Bukovaz maintained it isn’t true.

Biden DOJ Official Hit with Criminal Referral, Ethics Complaints and Bar Complaints For Lying Under Oath About Previous Arrest For Stabbing Her Then-Husband

Biden DOJ official Kristen Clarke was hit with a DOJ criminal referral, ethics complaints, and bar complaints for lying under oath about a previous arrest which was expunged from her record.

Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Kristen Clarke in 2021 falsely testified to the Senate that she had never been arrested.

Clarke was previously arrested for attacking her then-husband with a knife and slicing his finger to the bone, according to court documents obtained by The Daily Signal.

Earlier this year Clarke admitted she lied during her Senate confirmation hearing.

“Nearly 2 decades ago, I was subjected to years-long abuse and domestic violence at the hands of my ex-husband,” Clarke said in a statement to CNN.

“This was a terrorizing and traumatizing period that I have sought to put behind me to promote my personal health, healing and well-being. The physical and emotional scars, the emotional abuse and exploitation, and the lying are things that no woman or mother should ever have to endure,” Clarke added.

Kristen Clarke is in charge of enforcing civil rights laws.

She enforces those laws aggressively against anyone who sneezes near an abortion clinic.

And not at all against those who vandalize churches.

She lied under oath during her confirmation proceedings, and should resign. https://t.co/5tHpaG4a2W

— Mike Lee (@BasedMikeLee) May 1, 2024

The Article III Project founded by former Gorsuch clerk Mike Davis submitted four complaints against Kristen Clarke: a DOJ criminal referral and an OPR complaint, along with 2 state bar complaints.

Per Mike Davis:

More than 7 weeks has passed since Americans learned Kristen Clarke, Biden’s head of DOJ Civil Rights, perjured herself at her Senate confirmation hearing.

Kristen Clarke lied under oath about her arrest for stabbing her then-husband.

But for Kristen Clarke’s lie, the Senate would never have confirmed her.

And Kristen Clarke has politicized and weaponized the Biden Justice Department to imprison political enemies (like Christians praying at abortion clinics) and to protect political allies (like Hamas supporters terrorizing Jews).

And Merrick Garland apparently hasn’t done a damn thing about Kristen Clarke’s clear perjury, even after more than 7 weeks.

DEVELOPING: Cyber Group Claims it Hacked the Federal Reserve… But Cybersecurity Experts Express Doubts About Claims

‘Russian’ cyber group dubbed LockBit claims it hacked the Federal Reserve and exfiltrated 33 terabytes of sensitive banking data.

LockBit boasted about the breach on the dark web this week.

“33 terabytes of juicy banking information containing Americans’ banking secrets,” LockBit wrote. “You better hire another negotiator within 48 hours, and fire this clinical idiot who values Americans’ bank secrecy at $50,000.”

Cybersecurity experts expressed doubts about LockBit’s claims.

“If Lockbit ransomware group actually ransomed the United States Federal Reserve it would be DEFCON 2 and the administrators would need to worry about a drone strike,” the group jokingly wrote. “Unless Lockbit ransomware group ransomed something small in the Federal Reserve, like maybe Lockbit took down their coffee machine and they can’t watch anime or something (we don’t know what the staff at the Federal Reserve actually do).”

The Daily Dot reported:

The ransomware group known as LockBit claimed to have hacked the Federal Reserve Bank and says it will release 33 terabytes of sensitive data on Tuesday.

In a post to the dark web this week, the criminal organization alleged that it had been in talks with the bank in order to secure a ransom in exchange for keeping the data private.

“33 terabytes of juicy banking information containing Americans’ banking secrets,” the group wrote. “You better hire another negotiator within 48 hours, and fire this clinical idiot who values Americans’ bank secrecy at $50,000.”

LockBit rose to prominence in 2019 by bringing in millions of dollars in ransom payments. And although the group’s online infrastructure was shuttered by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies in February, LockBit has managed to reemerge and continue its operations.

Cybersecurity experts, however, are skeptical of claims regarding the Federal Reserve and note that LockBit has not released any sample data.

Homelessness in Chicago Has TRIPLED Since 2023 as Illegal Aliens Flood City’s Shelters

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson

Homelessness in Chicago has tripled over the past year as illegal aliens continue to arrive in the city in overwhelming numbers.

According to the latest study conducted by the federal government, the number of homeless people out on the streets has risen by a staggering 200 percent since early 2023.

The Center Square reports:

With the annual survey used by the federal government to track such trends, researchers also note that as more than 35,000 migrants poured into the city, the number of individuals living in city shelters or on city streets tripled and the number of longtime homeless residents spiked by 25%.

In all, nearly 19,000 people lacked a permanent place to sleep at the time of the survey after the number of unhoused individuals across the city had largely held steady over the prior decade.

Migrants who have taken advantage of the Biden regime’s open border policy are typically bused to Chicago or other major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Denver.

However, Illinois remains one of the most popular destinations, with authorities spending a staggering $1 billion worth of taxpayers’ money on providing the illegal aliens with free shelter, healthcare, food, education, and various other costs.

Many local residents, including black communities that typically support Democratic candidates, have expressed their anger and disgust at the situation.

Back in March, Chicago voters rejected a proposed tax hike in a referendum, which far-left Mayor Brandon Johnson had claimed was needed to continue funding the lifestyles of those who have entered the country illegally.

Speaking after the results were confirmed, Johnson blamed the outcome on supporters of Donald Trump.

“It’s also not lost on me, I think there were 38,000 Republicans that showed up and voted for Donald Trump, or something like that, in Chicago,” Johnson said.

“If we’re trying to draw some conclusions, and you all want some other, you know, analytics you might want to discover, that might be something to look into because there’s— I’ll just say there’s a good chance that that played a part in this referendum.

Remember when Douglass Mackey was indicted by Biden’s DOJ for posting a Hillary meme during the 2016 election?

Mackey was facing a maximum of 10 years in prison (sentenced to 7 months) for speech crimes.

34-year-old Mackey was arrested in West Palm Beach in 2021 on one charge of conspiracy against rights.

According to the unsealed indictment, Mackey conspired with others on Twitter to encourage black people to cast their votes via text message.

The Eastern District of New York said in its indictment that one week before the 2016 election, Mackey tweeted an image of a black woman in front of an “African Americans for President Hillary” sign.

Emblazoned on the picture was the message: “Avoid the Line. Vote from Home. Text ‘Hillary’ to 59925. Vote for Hillary and be a part of history”

The most chilling part of the indictment is the criminalization of normal political speech and banter:

An example of the criminal behavior describes Mackey and his friends on Twitter joking around in private groups about trolling “shitlibs” with memes.

We found the ad. Looks like this group, Pennsylvania Values, pulled the “Trump doesn’t want you to vote by mail” fraudulent ad because they probably realized it was illegal.

“One of My Favorite Stories” – CNN Host Kasie Hunt Who Will Not Allow Criticism of CNN Hosts Joked About the Violent Assault on Senator Rand Paul that Almost Killed Him (VIDEO)

Earlier today, CNN’s Kasie Hunt cut off President Trump’s campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt after she brought up Jake Tapper’s years of comparing Trump to Hitler.

President Trump and Joe Biden will face off in the first presidential debate on Thursday evening at 9 pm ET. The debate will be hosted by CNN in Atlanta.

Trump haters Jake Tapper and Dana Bash are moderating this week’s presidential debate on CNN.

Of course, the debate rules are designed to protect Joe Biden.

The bar is set so low for feeble Biden that all he has to do is show up and not keel over and he will be applauded.

The debate moderators have a history of attacking Trump and comparing him to Adolf Hitler.

“First of all, it takes someone five minutes to Google Jake Tapper and Donald Trump to see that Jake Tapper has consistently compared Trump to Adolf Hitler,” Karoline Leavitt said as Kasie Hunt interrupted her.

“Ma’am! We’re gonna to stop this interview if you continue to attack my colleagues!” Kasie Hunt said as she cut the interview.

The Video was posted earlier by Christina Laila.

Rand Paul had part of his lung removed in 2019 due to damage from the politically motivated assault.
