Donald Trump spoke to Volodymyr Zelensky on the phone on Friday, with sources close to the Ukrainian President indicating it went “exceedingly well.”

It what was their first conversation since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Trump reportedly pledged to seek a “just peace in Ukraine” if he returns to the Oval Office in November.

Politico notes:

Trump said that it was a “very good call” and that he will work to negotiate a peace deal between Moscow and Kyiv. A person close to Zelenskyy who requested anonymity to discuss the private conversation said it went “exceedingly well” and that Trump pledged to “achieve a just peace in Ukraine” if he wins back the White House.

AOC took to an hour-long livestream session on Thursday night, to vent her concerns over the possibility of the Democrat Party replacing Biden as the presidential nominee, and, of course, take an unhinged

The rant followed just hours after Trump’s RNC speech. It opened with deranged comments from AOC calling Trump an old, racist, neo-nazi while attempting to rationalize her continued support for the Democrat party, even after Biden’s humiliating debate debacle.

”The president is old. The president is very old. Donald Trump is also very old, and a racist, and a neo-nazi” she claimed.

Despite Biden being a disaster to the party, AOC says she’s sticking with him and is concerned over talks of replacing the nominee so close to the Democratic Convention.

“If you 10,000 percent are super convinced that the candidate or the president cannot beat Donald Trump, then like, do what you think is in your good conscience. But I have not seen an alternative scenario that does not set us up for enormous peril.” She exclaimed to her viewers.

The representative’s remarks, despite her dancing around most of the points she was attempting to make, appear to emphasize a growing divide amongst the party, particularly between the government and the class of people who influence the government, as described by AOC.

“In the country that we live in, we have everyday people and voters, and we have the government, and then you kind of have this class of people in between, from pundits and media, and wealthy people, and donors, and organization leaders.” She said.

AOC went on to blame the media pundits and donors for manufacturing the Biden replacement conversation.

“I’m saying this because I want you to see what I’m seeing. This class of donors, decision-makers, power players, etc., started to waiver after the debate.. and they’re saying we need to jump ship. She claimed.

She also voiced concerns over the idea that there is zero consensus among democrat representatives who do want Joe Biden to leave, to support Kamala Harris as the replacement nominee.

After pointing out this divide, she then shifts to reminding her followers and the party of their shared primary goal to defeat Trump in the election.

“What is legitimately motivating a lot of people in this conversation is that everybody is terrified of a Trump presidency and everyone wants to do everything and anything possible to prevent that from happening.”

Around 8 p.m., the Baltimore City Police Department received a call that a 12-year-old girl had been shot near North Kenwood Avenue and McElderry Park.

Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that officers arriving at the scene found a 12-year-old girl inside the residence with a gunshot wound.

A Baltimore County family and police are searching for a 12-year-old girl who disappeared Thursday.

The Baltimore Sun reports,

Worley said CPR was performed, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide victim advocates were dispatched to the scene to assist with the girl’s family.

When asked if this was a targeted shooting, Worley responded: “I can tell you it wasn’t accidental, it was not accidental. It was done on purpose. You’re talking about a 12-year-old girl, that’s all that matters. Nothing else matters.”

“This young lady had a whole life ahead of her, but a coward took her life,” Mayor Brandon Scott said.

“I want this person to know that we will find you. You will never redeem yourself of what you did tonight, but we will find you.,he added. “Your best bet is to walk into a police district tonight and turn yourself in because the entire city is going to be looking for you because Baltimore is not going to stand for someone cowardly taking the life of a 12-year-old.”

CBS News reported that when Alona Warren was first discovered missing, she had left a note and informed friends that she had met a man in his 20s online.

Alona’s loved ones gathered Tuesday night to search for her near Pikesville Middle School. Her parents told WJZ they learned where Alona may have gone from friends.

“People have said and friends have said that she was talking to a man in his 20s,” Brooks said.

“If someone is harboring her, let her go,” Alona’s father, Kenneth Brooks, said. “Let her go. The damage that you’re doing right now to this family is immeasurable. Please we are begging you. Let her go.”

Baltimore County detectives worked with other law enforcement agencies and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to locate her.

The DNC’s Rules Committee on Friday made the case for proceeding with Joe Biden’s virtual nomination while also outlining next steps in the process and how virtual roll call voting would work despite rumors of Biden dropping out, ABC News reported.

In a letter distributed to other members of the rules committee on Wednesday morning and signed by Leah Daughtry and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, co-chairs of the Democratic National Convention Rules Committee, the committee declared its intent to “propose a framework for the best path forward” in their upcoming Friday meeting.

Of course, this sudden new rule is being implemented to prevent any embarrassing displays by states or delegates during the nomination process.

Now the process will be held virtually – how democratic!

However, the letter also clarified that the adoption of any rules would be deferred until its next meeting, scheduled for July 26.

The Democratic National Convention is scheduled from August 19 to 22 in Chicago.

The current proposal indicates that the virtual roll call voting will commence in the first week of August. According to party officials, the virtual voting process is slated to begin no earlier than August 1 and conclude by August 7.

However, the official start date remains pending until the DNC approves the proposed rules package. The presidential and vice-presidential acceptance speeches will still occur in person.

According to the letter obtained by Politico:

We write to share our serious concerns about the DNC’s plan to hold a “virtual roll call” to select our Democratic Presidential Nominee as early as July 21.

There is no legal justification for this extraordinary and unprecedented action which would effectively accelerate the nomination process by nearly a month. The “virtual roll call” was initially proposed as necessary for meeting Ohio’s unique ballot access requirements, but that is no longer a valid justification. Ohio enacted legislation on May 31 allowing the Democratic Party to nominate its candidate at the DNC in person.’ At this point, there is no serious threat to the Democratic ticket nominated in regular order at next month’s DNC convention appearing on the ballot in Ohio or any other state.

Simply put, there is no longer any legal reason for moving forward with the extraordinary step of an early nomination by way of a “virtual roll call,” as even many DNC members have admitted.?

Proceeding with the “virtual roll call” in the absence of a valid legal rationale will be rightly perceived as a purely political maneuver, which we believe would be counterproductive and undermine party unity and cohesion. Moreover, it would contradict what President Biden himself has repeatedly said to members of Congress in recent days, telling us that anyone who wants to challenge his nomination should do so “at the convention.”

The Democratic Party – not just elected officials and delegates, but also millions of grassroots voters – is currently engaged in careful consideration and debate about the absolute imperative of defeating Donald Trump and winning control of Congress.

As Democratic members of Congress, we represent the spectrum of views on this question.

Some of us have called on President Biden to step aside, others have urged him to stay in the race, and still others have deep concerns about the status of the President’s campaign but have yet to take a position on what should happen.

All of us, however, agree that stifling debate and prematurely shutting down any possible change in the Democratic ticket through an unnecessary and unprecedented “virtual roll call” in the days ahead is a terrible idea. It could deeply undermine the morale and unity of Democrats- from delegates, volunteers, grassroots organizers and donors to ordinary voters – at the worst possible time.

Regardless of whether President Biden remains our nominee, Democratic unity and enthusiasm will be critical between now and November 5th. We respectfully but emphatically request that you cancel any plans for an accelerated “virtual roll call” and further refrain from any extraordinary procedures that could be perceived as curtailing legitimate debate or attempting to force an early resolution of the party nomination.

The Democratic Party must nominate its presidential ticket at the Democratic National Convention, in regular order, as we always have.

DNC Chair Jamie Harrison acknowledged concerns about the virtual roll call process but assured party members that plans are set to proceed with a virtual roll call instead of an in-person one.

Harrison also maintained Biden would be on the top of the ticket as the result of this plan. “Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, will be reelected because of you. Because of you, we can look forward to nominating our president through a virtual roll call and celebrating with fanfare together in Chicago alongside all of our delegates who are supporting the Biden Harris ticket,” he said.

This new proposal comes after rumors that Joe Biden is going to drop out of the 2024 presidential race as early as Sunday.

According to Newsmax TV reporter Mark Halperin, Biden “plans to announce withdrawal from nomination as early as this weekend, with Sunday most likely.”

Biden is not expected to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, nor will he resign from the presidency. Halperin suggested an open convention with Harris and about three other candidates. He mentioned potential running mates for Harris, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and PA Gov. Josh Shapiro.

The Gateway Pundit previously reported that the Biden family wants to ensure that a solid plan is in place for the Democrat Party to defeat President Trump should Biden decide to depart from the race. One particular topic of discussion also reportedly centers around Biden’s health, which his cronies have falsely insisted is just fine despite all available evidence.

This news also comes as Biden insists that he will not surrender his position as the Democrat Party’s presumptive nominee unless an unspecified “medical condition” emerges.

COVID does not appear to count.

Biden-Harris campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond dismissed rumors that Joe Biden is considering withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race.

“The President has said that he is running, and it’s the end of story. He was just out here in Nevada talking to the NAACP, and he is running his campaign along with the vice President,” said Richmond during interview with MSNBC,

“President Biden is the head of the party. He talks to the leadership all the time, and what they express to him, I’m sure it will remain between them because they don’t talk about what they talk about in private and discuss it publicly. But what I will say is that the President has said over and over again that he is the best person to beat Donald Trump.”

Critics within the Democrat party argue that this move could lead to Biden’s confirmation as the official nominee without any real chance for opposition when delegates convene at the DNC convention in Chicago on August 19.

Harrison defended the DNC’s decision, stating, “No part of this process is rushed. The timeline for the virtual roll call process remains on schedule and unchanged from when the DNC made that decision back in May, and voted to ratify in mid-June.”

Brad never entered the Capitol, never brought a weapon, never vandalized anything, and never hurt anyone.

But the Biden regime sentenced him to 41 months in prison for touching a huge Trump sign that passed over his head as he stood in the crowd that day.

Brad spent 13 months on home confinement before sentencing, then he was sentenced to 41 months in prison but with good time he ended up spending 20 months in federal prison, now he is  finishing  his sentence in a  halfway house and after he completes that he will have 3 years of probation.  His crime was attending a protest for President Trump.

Months after Brad’s arrest they decided to add on a very serious felony assault charge against him. He was devastated. The sign never injured anyone but did eventually go into a line of police and was placed on the ground.

Last Saturday, in Butler, Pennsylvania, President Trump was shot in the ear and narrowly saved from a fatal head wound from an assassin’s bullet. Retired firefighter Corey Comperatore was fatally struck by a bullet, and two other pro-Trump rally-goers were seriously injured.

Over the last week, much of the federal narrative has broken down trying to explain the events. As the sniper’s body was recovered on the roof of the American Glass Research company’s warehouse in Butler, Pennsylvania, within a few days it emerged that snipers were in the second floor overlooking the sniper’s body in an adjoining building.

One often-repeated part of the official story is that a Butler County Sheriff’s Deputy climbed on top of the roof moments prior to the shooting to confront alleged shooter Thomas Crooks, and Crooks responded by pointing a weapon at the Deputy, who then fell off of an eight-foot ladder

Later reports claim that the deputy hurt his ankle and is now walking with a medical boot. Here’s the New York Post repeating that story nationally.

Butler County Sheriff Michael Slupe confirmed to KDKA-TV that an armed municipal officer with Butler Township encountered shooter Thomas Crooks before he fired shots from a rooftop building outside the perimeter of former President Trump’s rally.

The sheriff said he was not made aware of any potential threats, but confirmed an officer encountered the shooter on the roof, and didn’t fire his weapon.

“All I know is the officer had both hands on the roof to get up on the roof, never made it because the shooter had turned towards the officer, and rightfully and smartly, the officer let go,” Sheriff Slupe said.

Sheriff Slupe says before the shooting, the officer and others were previously alerted to a suspicious person and began searching for him right away.

Sheriff Slupe said this officer was hoisted by another officer to the roof of a building where the shooter had taken a position.

The shooter, Crooks, focused his rifle on the officer who let go and fell off the roof. Then, the 20-year-old began firing into the crowd.

Witnesses on the ground who saw the rooftop sniper say that local police did not confront the sniper moments before the shooting, and no one saw any confrontation by Crooks before shots rang out.

Key witness Greg Smith exclusively told the Gateway Pundit:

“I saw him [the sniper] right before he shots happened, and I didn’t see him turn around and confront anyone. I never saw that and it didn’t happen. We asked all the people around us and in our group and we didn’t see that. I heard the story about the officer falling and hurting his foot, no one saw that. I’ve heard the stories, but I have no idea what they’re talking about.”

Explosively, he also relates that the snipers in the 2nd floor section of the AGR building were watching the rooftop shooter as the shots rang out – and did nothing!

“I was looking all around to get law enforcement’s attention before the shots, and I could tell it was coming, because as I was standing there for several minutes I kept thinking ‘why is Trump still talking?’ You expect someone to be on the radio or whatever the protocol is, to get Trump off the stage. I knew this isn’t good. I expected the shots to start, and then they did. It was mass chaos. I was looking at the guys on the second story, my eyes were jumping three or four different places, I could see that they saw him and were looking at him and watching what he was doing, but they didn’t do anything.“

Butler County Sheriffs Deputies have said that their body cameras were turned off and there is no footage available from the incident.

Federal authorities have blamed Butler County for failing to secure the AGR Building, claiming it is outside of their “security perimeter.” Butler County has responded by saying they were only asked to take care of traffic control.

Local witnesses say that there was zero police presence on the ground the entire day around the AGR Building north of the Butler Farm Field where the Trump rally was held, and they saw no law enforcement whatsoever.

Key assassin witness Greg Smith tells the Gateway Pundit: “We didn’t see a single law enforcement officer the entire time until they were running around the building looking for the guy. We didn’t see a single bit of law enforcement.”

Witness Smith describes seeing snipers out of the second floor warehouse building as part of the AGR complex. Some online have speculated that these individuals were Butler County Emergency Services snipers or SWAT responders, but so far that has not been made clear and officials are not providing any answers. But the witnesses described seeing the snipers in the windows of the AGR building.

“They were watching us. I would look up from time to time, and we would always see them there. I gave this same testimony and descriptions about the snipers in the second floor to the State Police Detectives in my driveway,” said Smith.

Smith also says that it is unrealistic to get on top of the AGR building with a five foot ladder. He said that it would require “at least a 12 foot ladder” or better to get on top of the building. Federal officials continue to maintain Crooks used a five foot ladder to get on the roof.

Few details have emerged from the shooting that appear to be reliable and backed by third-parties. Federal authorities have spoken primarily through ‘off the record’ statements to friendly media outlets.

Many of the details and narratives offered by the anonymous law enforcement quotes to friendly media have proven later to be false. As one example, the ‘five foot ladder’ narrative from federal authorities collapsed this week.

Posted images online show police vehicles underneath the nearby water tower. But whomever these law enforcement officers were, they were not seen by the collected witnesses who observed the rooftop sniper and were screaming for law enforcement to help.

The Gateway Pundit has produced this map to help better explain where Thomas Matthew Crooks has been observed at the American Glass Research building in Butler, Pennsylvania, and points in the warehouse complex where different claims are being made.

Mainstream media has repeated the “Officer climbed to roof and confronted Crooks” story.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Deputy who alleges to have confronted Crooks, fallen, and injured his ankle, has not been named. Calls to the Sheriff’s Office were not returned for this story, however the department had previously said it was referring all media inquiries to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The New York Post declared the as-yet-unnamed falling-ladder Deputy as a hero.

The FBI’s Public Affairs Officer coordinating the media response to this incident, Bradford Arick of the Pittsburgh FBI Field Office, who responded, “The FBI continues to investigate the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump and as potential domestic terrorism. We encourage the public to continue sending their tips and information. The FBI continues to determine the sequence of events and the shooters’ movements prior to the shooting. I can neither confirm nor deny the information.”

President Trump’s next rally is Saturday night in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the first since the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. Trump concludes a week-long Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

For pro-lifers and all Americans who care about the future of our nation, this is not the time to abandon the Republican party.

Yes, it is disheartening that vice presidential nominee JD Vance has said he supports access to the deadly abortion drug mifepristone, which now accounts for the death of more unborn children than surgical abortion. And while many involved in pro-life would like to see a national ban, or better yet, a personhood amendment, the reality is, those things are not on the immediate horizon.

At this moment, most babies are protected from abortion in 16 states. But if we turn on the Republicans now, not only are we looking at the return of Joe Biden – or a last-minute substitution – to the White House, but also to the not-farfetched possibility of losing control of the U.S. House and Senate to the Democrats.

If that happens, it won’t be long before our nation becomes a place we don’t recognize.

Senate Democrats recently tried to advance a bill called the Reproductive Freedom for Women Act that sought to restore abortion access that was guaranteed under Roe v. Wade and to build upon it. Thanks to the Republicans, the bill was blocked.

But if Senate Democrats somehow find themselves with a filibuster-proof majority, they likely would toss out that act in favor of the much more radical Women’s Health Protection Act, which would do away with every single abortion law on every level of government. Born-alive protections for newborn survivors of abortion? Gone. Parental consent and notification? Gone. Gestational limits on abortion? Gone. You get the idea.

Our nation would once again be soaked in the blood of the unborn.

The Democrats also will set their sights on other goals – goals that have thus far been unattainable because of the Republicans. The For the People ACT would do away with free and fair elections and, with a Democrat majority, non-citizens could very well gain the right to vote.

Any concept of a border would be thrown out the window as we allow in anyone who has the gumption to get here, including some very nasty terrorists who might like to see 9/11 become one of the lesser attacks on our soil.

Women will continue to be canceled as the bizarre transgender movement finds even more allies among the Democrats. Ever-increasing numbers of girls and women in sports will lose titles and scholarships to mediocre male athletes who pretend to be women just to win medals.

Women in prison and those who, through no fault of their own, find themselves in domestic violence shelters will continue to be forced to share quarters with men, some of them with clear ill intent.

Parents will lose all rights to raise their children and, indeed, lose custody of children unless they go along with their minor child’s gender identification. And thanks unethical efforts of the “transgender woman” who is second in charge of our federal Department of Health and Human Services, gender-mutilating surgeries will be performed on ever-younger children.

All of this – and more – seems insane, and yet all of it is within reach if Democrats come away from the 2024 elections with the perfect trifecta – the White House, the Senate, the House of Representatives.

Despite the changes in the GOP platform this year in regard to abortion, we know that if Trump is elected, he likely will re-establish the protections of his enhanced Mexico City policy, which protected U.S. taxpayers from funding abortions overseas;  end the Veterans Administration’s side hustle in abortion, and pardon the peaceful pro-lifers serving lengthy sentences in federal prison, among many other pro-life actions.

And while a Republican-majority Senate and House might not pass a personhood amendment or a law protecting babies at a given gestational age, at least the drastic Women’s Health Protection Act won’t be a threat anymore. State laws protecting babies and mothers would continue to be enforced.

So the road ahead is very clear. We need to stand by the party willing to offer some protections to the unborn and we need to get those people elected. Once in office, we can push and prod and lobby and insist and complain as loudly as we need to be heard.

The election is nearly upon us. Certainly we can wait that long to take the Republicans to task for what we see as their shortcomings.

The future of our nation relies on that patience.

An American reporter for the Wall Street Journal was sentenced Friday to 16 years in prison after being convicted of espionage in what his employer called “a hurried, secret trial that the U.S. government has condemned as a sham.”

Evan Gershkovich was ordered to serve the sentence at a high-security penal colony, the Journal reported.

“The court’s Friday verdict — after three days of hearings — was widely viewed as a foregone conclusion, since acquittals in Russian espionage trials are exceedingly rare,” according to the report.

“This disgraceful, sham conviction comes after Evan has spent 478 days in prison, wrongfully detained, away from his family and friends, prevented from reporting, all for doing his job as a journalist,” Wall Street Journal Editor in Chief Emma Tucker and Wall Street Journal publisher Almar Latour said in a statement.

Gershkovich, 32, was detained in March 2023 by Russian authorities while on assignment for the Wall Street Journal in Yekaterinburg.

Russian officials “have produced no public evidence to support their allegations,” the Journal reported.

“Authorities claimed, without offering any evidence, that he was gathering secret information for the U.S.,” the Associated Press reported.

The U.S. State Department said Gershkovich was “wrongfully detained” and said it is working to secure his release.

President Joe Biden was quoted as saying, “We are pushing hard for Evan’s release and will continue to do so.

“As I have long said and as the U.N. also concluded, there is no question that Russia is wrongfully detaining Evan. Journalism is not a crime.”

The AP reported that in Russia, “espionage and treason cases are typically shrouded in secrecy.”

“Russian courts convict more than 99 percent of defendants, and prosecutors can appeal sentences that they regard as too lenient.

“Unlike the trial’s opening June 26 in Yekaterinburg and previous hearings in Moscow where reporters could see Gershkovich briefly before proceedings began, there was no access to the courtroom Thursday when the trial resumed,” the news agency reported. “Media were allowed in Friday for the verdict.”

“Gershkovich was afforded few of the protections normally accorded to defendants in the U.S. and other Western countries,” the Journal reported.

Multiple news outlets speculated that the accusation and imprisonment was orchestrated with an eye toward a prisoner swap. Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have raised the issue with the U.S., according to the Journal.

“Putin indicated that he would be open to a prisoner swap for Gershkovich and others,” according to the report. “He made clear reference to Vadim Krasikov, an FSB [Federal Security Service] operative now serving a life sentence in Germany for killing a Chechen émigré in Berlin in 2019.”

The New York Times report observed that the trial date had suddenly been moved up and that the case moved faster than usual.

“The expedited nature of the case suggested that Moscow might be ready to trade Mr. Gershkovich,” the Times reported.

“The proceedings were recently moved up by more than three weeks, and the court concluded the case, a process that usually takes months, in a matter of weeks, with only three hearings.”

68-year-old Jupiter, Florida resident Michael Wiseman was arrested this week for making threats against President Trump, Senator J.D. Vance, and their children on Facebook.

Wiseman was arrested on Saturday morning.

Wiseman called on cancer patients to off the Republican ticket before they die. What a disgusting lunatic.

Police in Jupiter, Florida, arrested one individual on Friday who was accused of making threats online toward former President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance.

According to a release from the Jupiter Police Department (JPD), the suspect, Michael M. Wiseman, was taken into custody without incident on charges of Written Threats to Kill for threats he allegedly made on social media. Police said that their department received “multiple” tips about the suspect’s comments through online crime tips and from “residents who expressed their concern in person.”

Detectives at the JPD said that they found Wiseman had made “multiple threats” against Trump and Vance on his Facebook account. The suspect is also accused of making threats “concerning bodily harm to members of the Trump and Vance families.”

The news release said that JPD coordinated with the U.S. Secret Service and the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office during their investigation into Wiseman.

A little over a decade and a half ago, at the close of the what had been up, until that point, among the most arrogant and clueless of American presidencies, there seemed, if for only a short while, a yearning both within Washington and the country at large for a return to normalcy, a desire to abandon the unilateralism and wars of choice that became the hallmark of U.S. foreign policy beginning on September 11, 2001.

The desire to rethink the prevailing assumptions of hegemony and endless war manifested itself in some quarters, mainly among journalists and intellectuals, in a renewed interest in the work of the mid-20th century theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, known, if at all, among the churchgoing public as the author of the Serenity Prayer. The son of a German pastor, Niebuhr was born in 1892 in Wright City, Missouri. He became among the most trenchant critics of America’s postwar transformation into a Cold War hegemon, which he saw as antithetical to both the best traditions of the country and to a vibrant and healthy democracy. 

Niebuhr understood that the exercise of global power in the postwar decades came with its own set of problems. The intellectual historian Wilfred MaClay has observed that for Niebuhr, “the pursuit of good ends in the arenas of national and international politics had to take full account of the un-loveliness of human nature, and the un-loveliness of power.”

As far as I can tell, the first major public intellectual to call for a Niebuhrian Revival was the international relations scholar Andrew Bacevich in 2008. At the time, hopes were high among conservatives (remember the ObamaCons?) that Obama, thoughtful, measured, mature, and, perhaps most importantly, Not Hillary, would take U.S. foreign policy in new, less sanguinary directions. He gave every indication that he might. Speaking with David Brooks in 2007, Obama claimed Niebuhr was his “favorite philosopher.” In 2009, the Pew Research Center held a conference featuring E.J. Dionne on “the recent revival of interest in Niebuhrian thought.” And as late as 2014, a TIME magazine contributor claimed to have “heard a distinct Niebuhrian strain” in a speech Obama gave on the Middle East.

It was not surprising that after eight years of Bush-Cheney— which brought us military disaster, economic ruin, and national disgrace—there would be a renewed interest in the work of Niebuhr who, in his 1952 book The Irony of American History, observed that,

if we should perish, the ruthlessness of the foe would be only the secondary cause of the disaster. The primary cause would be that the strength of a giant nation was directed by eyes too blind to see all the hazards of the struggle; and the blindness would be induced not by some accident of nature or history but by hatred and vainglory.

Unfortunately, Obama’s repudiation of Washington’s imperial arrogance was short lived. In some ways, in spite of a few adroitly delivered speeches, his foreign policy exhibited an arrogance on par with that of his predecessor: The destruction of Libya; the attempted destruction of Syria; and a new and more dangerous Cold War with Russia are among Obama’s troubling legacies. 

Today, President Joe Biden, overseeing what is for all intents and purposes a third Obama term, makes Bush, Cheney and Co. seem almost humble by comparison. Niebuhr, citing John Adams, recognized what Biden and his team of liberal interventionists (they refer to themselves, by the way, as “the A-Team”) clearly do not, that power,

always thinks it has a great soul and vast views beyond the comprehension of the weak; and that it is doing God’s service when it is violating all His laws.

Consider the recent televised exchange between Biden and ABC’s George Stephanopoulos:

Stephanopoulos: Would you be willing to undergo an independent medical evaluation that included neurological and cognit– cognitive tests and release the results to the American people?

Biden: Look. I have a cognitive test every single day. Every day I have that test. Everything I do. You know, not only am I campaigning, but I’m running the world. Not—and that’s not hy—sounds like hyperbole, but we are the essential nation of the world.

Read that again: I am running the world. We are the essential nation of the world. Comments like these make it clear that among the greatest dangers we face is the unmitigated, undisguised hubris of our elected leaders.

Which brings us to the man of the hour. 

Having been, by luck or some otherworldly power, spared his life after the nearest of misses, there are signs that the former President Trump might take a more measured, mature approach going forward. In a widely read interview with the Washington Examiner, Trump said he re-drafted his RNC acceptance address in light of last weekend’s assassination attempt. “It is,” he said, “a chance to bring the country together. I was given that chance.”

It might be too much to expect that the foreign policy proposals of his current crop of advisers will likewise undergo a thoughtful reconsideration. Time will tell. But Reinhold Niebuhr understood the “ironies of history.” Might it be Donald Trump, of all people, to be the one who brings us just a bit closer to that long hoped for Niebuhrian Revival?
