What is happening in Europe is coming to America.

One of my pet peeves is to observe and chronicle how the 200-year idea of “liberal democracy” is disappearing before our very eyes due to the various new social conditions arising from technological innovations. I have written about it several times, but we have added one more data point to the idea that “free speech” as a concept is functionally dead or dying in the Euro-Atlantic. The founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, was arrested in France on trumped-up charges that his platform “facilitated” human trafficking and pedophilic activity.

I say “trumped-up” because we have seen previous instances of actual sexual grooming and other such criminal deviance on social media platforms before (and even currently), but none of their founders have been arrested. No, the real reason is that Telegram, like X, or previously RarBG, or Pirate Bay, is committed to an old-school, mid-’90s throwback idea of zero censorship and total freedom of speech—a callback to a time when the internet was imagined to be the ultimate high-tech frontier of Utopia. That dream is dead: Durov refused the Europeans’ demands to crack his app, and is now facing the consequences.

Tucker Carlson conducted an interview with Durov a while back, and tweeted it out again following the arrest.

Pavel Durov left Russia when the government tried to control his social media company, Telegram. But in the end, it wasn’t Putin who arrested him for allowing the public to exercise free speech. It was a western country, a Biden administration ally and enthusiastic NATO member, that locked him away. Pavel Durov sits in a French jail tonight, a living warning to any platform owner who refuses to censor the truth at the behest of governments and intel agencies. Darkness is descending fast on the formerly free world.

Carlson would know. His own life is now on the line: consider that the Department of Justice has begun a broad criminal investigation into Americans who have worked with Russia’s state television networks. This is an easy way to tamp down on any dissenting voices, such as those of Carlson or Elon Musk; if carried out, the effect would be chilling. That’s the aim. The same goes for the anti-X crusade in Brazil and Europe. X is ostensibly the only platform to provide zero censorship, and thus alternative viewpoints. The Telegram arrest is just a practice run.

Consider two questions.

First, if, as the online saying goes, “America innovates, China replicates, and Europe regulates,” then what explains one side of the American political spectrum imitating European-style repression on innovation and freedom of speech? And, second, if there are people who are megarich, worth more than the annual GDP of mid-sized states, and they see huge international institutions trying to harm them, then what’s stopping them from banding together to oppose the very idea of international institutions—in short, from bringing back feudalism?

The second question is more relevant, given that, as David Sacks said, “Using allied countries to circumvent First Amendment protections is the new Rendition.”

The answers might soon look less than hypothetical. Free speech has never been the historical norm of human governmental organization. Even John Milton’s career took an unfortunate turn after writing Areopagitica, when he became the lead censor for Oliver Cromwell. Every single technological innovation that leads to freedom of expression inevitably leads to more repression and political-theological conflict. The printing press and the wars of the Reformation led to a reactionary backlash. The industrial revolution and telegraphs and rail lines led to the age of power imbalance and then imperialism. Social media and the Arab Spring led to, well, what everyone can see in the Middle East.

In short, the idea that free speech can remain neutral, without power behind it, is fallacious; the power will inevitably find enemies. There’s no balance in the world unless provided by a great power. Might is still right. Europe and America are now not even nominally defending free speech and dissent against concentrated power.

Which brings us back to the next hypothetical. If there are phenomenally rich men in the West, who could quite literally buy half of some continents and create armies if they wished, what is stopping them from banding together to bring about neofeudalism? Or simply toppling some governments and taking over? What might the backlash to the backlash look like?

The answer will almost certainly be not very nice. If the cycle is from the tech revolution to a dark-age crackdown to global theological conflict to a new social and security architecture, we are perhaps at the second stage. And whatever it is that is happening in Europe is perhaps coming to America sooner than we’d like to think.

The Growing Rift in the Latin American Left

The Growing Rift in the Latin American Left

Nicaragua’s Ortega attacks Petro in Colombia and Lula in Brazil.

The repercussions of the July 28 election in Venezuela continue to grow, as President Nicolás Maduro’s refusal to release the ballots from the election to certify the vote count announced by Venezuela’s National Electoral Council has driven a wedge into relations in what was once a relatively closely aligned bloc of left-wing Latin American nations. Daniel Ortega, the president of Nicaragua and a close ally of Maduro in Venezuela, on Monday sharply criticized Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro and Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for their continued insistence that Venezuela release proof of Maduro’s victory in July.

“If you want my respect, you will respect me, Lula. If you want the respect of the [Venezuelan] people, you will respect the victory of President Nicolás Maduro, instead of being dragged around,” Ortega said. “Petro? What can I say with regard to Petro? Poor Petro… Petro, I see as competing with Lula to see who will be the leader to represent the Yankees in Latin America.”

Petro responded with a broadside of his own the next day. “Daniel Ortega has said we are being ‘dragged around’ just because we want a peaceful and democratic negotiated solution in Venezuela,” he wrote in a post on X. “At least I do not drag through the dirt the human rights of my country’s people, much less those of my brothers in arms and my companions in the fight against dictatorship.”

Ortega’s angry outburst follows a joint effort by the two countries to gingerly renegotiate their relationship with Maduro. While Ortega, Petro, and Lula—along with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico—have traditionally supported Maduro against the more right-wing governments of the region and what they perceive as the hostile interests of the United States, Maduro’s doubtful reelection and his increasingly harsh repression of the Venezuelan populace have precipitated a rift between the authoritarian left of Maduro and Ortega and the more democratic left of Lula and Petro.

In many ways, it is not surprising that the Brazilian and Colombian leaders would wish to distance themselves from the increasingly violent and unstable Venezuela. Both countries have suffered serious disruptions from fleeing Venezuelan refugees, whom Maduro refuses to allow to be deported back into the country. Moreover, linking domestic left-wing political movements with the situation in Venezuela is a losing proposition.

Petro in particular is in a precarious place. He is already considerably unpopular in Colombia, where conservatives consider him a traitor and appeaser for negotiating with the guerrilla narcoterrorists that infest the Colombian selva. This is a golden opportunity for him to burnish his democratic credentials and unchain himself from a sinking and regionally unpopular government.

The same rationale goes double for relations with Nicaragua’s Ortega, who has gone on a campaign of brutal retaliation and suppression in the past several years. The Catholic Church has been a particular focus of Ortega’s ire, after it supported protests against his government in 2018. Since then, 20 percent of the nation’s priests have been killed, imprisoned, or exiled—including nearly a score just this month. Hundreds more of Ortega’s political opponents were jailed leading up to and subsequent to the 2021 national elections, which—like the recent Venezuelan elections—were of doubtful legitimacy.

Ortega’s attack on the two South American leaders suggests that what was once a relatively robust coalition of left-wing governments in Latin America may be fracturing for good. Maduro now can only count on the support of Cuba, Nicaragua, Mexico and Bolivia. Colombia and Brazil, Venezuela’s most important neighbors, may soon join Gabriel Boric’s Chile as left-wing critics of Maduro.

Mexico’s position regarding Venezuela deserves closer attention. Immediately after the election, López Obrador joined Petro and Lula in calling on Maduro to release the ballots from the election. He quickly changed his tune, however, and endorsed Maduro, arguing that he sees no reason not to trust Venezuela’s National Electoral Council. This is a potentially concerning approach, given the president’s current efforts to dramatically rewrite Mexico’s constitution in ways that favor his own political party, including ending the independence of Mexico’s own National Electoral Institute. Continued convergence between Mexico, Nicaragua, and Venezuela should be considered a warning sign for the continued health of the Mexican political system. An authoritarian Mexico, even if it were far less harsh than the current Venezuelan or Nicaraguan governments, would be a major blow to American interests and to our ability to control our southern border.

On the other hand, the new distance opening up between Venezuela on the one hand and Colombia and Brazil on the other may provide new opportunities for amicable cooperation with the U.S. Left-wing Latin American governments are often hostile towards the U.S. for its long history of intervention in the region. But, with the specter of worldwide communism long gone, the U.S. should work for positive-sum engagement with democratic left-wing governments where reasonable—particularly as China will eagerly fill the deficit if Americans decline to step up.

Tim Walz’s Own Brother Considers Joining Forces with Trump, Slams Governor as ‘Unfit to Make Decisions About Your Future’: Report

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s own brother, Jeff Walz, has reportedly considered joining forces with former President Donald Trump, publicly criticizing his brother as “not the type of character you want making decisions about your future.”

The discovery was made by conservative journalist Laura Loomer, who uncovered Jeff Walz’s Facebook profile, which contains a series of posts highly critical of both his brother and the current administration.

One post, dated May 2023—the same day the Biden-Harris administration indicted Donald Trump in New York City—reads, “We’ve just become a third world banana republic.”

When prompted by a follower to discuss these concerns with his brother, Jeff revealed that he hasn’t spoken to Tim in eight years and is “100% opposed to all his ideology.”

He further claimed that his family was blindsided by Tim’s political rise and denied security after being selected for office.

“Haven’t spoke to him in 8 years. I’m 100% opposed to all his ideology. My family wasn’t given any notice thst he was selected and denied security the days after,” he wrote.

Another comment encouraged Jeff Walz to “Help MAGA… Get on stage with President Trump and endorse him… Help save this country.”

Jeff’s response was equally telling: “I’ve thought hard about doing something like that! I’m torn between that and just keeping my family out of it. The stories I could tell. Not the type of character you want making decisions about your future.”

According to Laura Loomer, “Tim Walz and Kamala Harris are such a bad Presidential ticket that Walz’s own BROTHER is supporting Donald Trump instead.”

Loomer also pointed out that Jeff Walz had donated to Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, according to FEC records.

BREAKING: Secret Service Failed to Prevent Juvenile from Illegally Entering President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Compound Last December

President Trump’s home at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.

The US Secret Service failed to prevent a juvenile from illegally entering President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago compound last December and no one was disciplined or fired over the security breach.

The juvenile intruder was able to wander around undetected for nearly ONE HOUR and even jumped into the pool.

“Sources in the Secret Service community are raising the Mar-a-Lago breach as further evidence that the detail and its supervisors assigned to protect Trump are given preferential treatment and are not bearing the same responsibility for the layers of security failures leading up to the July 13 assassination attempt against Trump that wounded the former president in the ear and killed retired fireman Corey Comperatore in front of his family. The detail and its two leaders are very close to and well-liked by Trump and the former president’s extended family,” RealClearPolitics reporter Susan Crabtree said.

Per RealClearPolitics reporter Susan Crabtree:

The Secret Service assigned to protect former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Fla., failed to prevent a juvenile from illegally entering the compound in late December last year, according to three sources in the Secret Service community.

The juvenile was able to remain undetected inside the Mar-a-Lago estate for nearly an hour, and apparently responding to a dare, jumped into the pool outside the entrance to Trump’s residence.

One source said the intruder did a “cannon-ball” into the pool, but another could only confirm that the young person jumped into the pool.

The entire compound is alarmed and secured, but because Mar-a-Lago is an active club, its security has proven particularly difficult for the Secret Service.

RealClearPolitics first contacted the Secret Service with an inquiry about the Mar-a-Lago breach today at noon. A Secret Service spokesperson told RealClearPolitics that the agency will provide a response as soon as possible. (I will add that statement to this story once that response is provided.)

The Secret Service responded to Susan Crabtree’s request for comment on her reporting on the juvenile intruder.

“In December 2023, the U.S. Secret Service was assisted by the Town of Palm Beach Police Department and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to address a property trespass incident by a juvenile on the exterior grounds of the Mar-a-Lago Club, which is limited to authorized club guests only,” the agency said in the statement.

“The juvenile was apprehended and taken into custody by Palm Beach Police Department officers. The U.S. Secret Service takes these matters extremely seriously, and at the time, an investigation was immediately launched, and certain U.S. Secret Service personnel were held accountable in accordance with agency protocols. We remain thankful to the Town of Palm Beach Police Department and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office for their response and strong partnership.”

Court Says ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ Can Be Censored By School

This article originally appeared on WND.com

But constitutional expert warns it sets ‘a dangerous precedent.’

A federal court ruling has allowed a school to censor “Let’s Go Brandon,” preventing students from wearing the popular social media meme on shirts.

But a constitutional expert warns that it’s a “dangerous precedent” that will move the nation established on the basis of free speech the wrong direction.

Constitutional expert Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University, has testified before Congress on constitutional issues, and even represented members in court.

He cited the case of “D.A.” in Michigan, a student ordered to remove his sweater with the phrase on it.

That decision was from Judge Paul Maloney.

“Maloney rejects the free speech claim and rules that school officials can punish a student for wearing a ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ T-shirt. I believe that he is wrong and that the case sets a dangerous precedent,” Turley wrote.

The slogan is “a familiar political battle cry not just against Biden but also against the bias of the media. It derives from an Oct. 2021 interview with race-car driver Brandon Brown after he won his first NASCAR Xfinity Series race. During the interview, NBC reporter Kelli Stavast’s questions were drowned out by loud-and-clear chants of ‘F*** Joe Biden.’ Stavast quickly and inexplicably declared, ‘You can hear the chants from the crowd, ‘Let’s go, Brandon!’”

In the case at hand school officials Andrew Buikema and Wendy Bradford ordered several boys to remove the slogan.

“The school ordered the removal of the clothing as obscene and in violation of the school code. However, other students are allowed to don political apparel supporting other political causes including ‘gay-pride-themed hoodies,’” he noted

While the school claims its authority to banish the message was because it was “profane,” Turley explained, “The funny thing about this action is that the slogan is not profane. To the contrary, it substitutes non-profane words for profane words.”

Maloney claimed, “Removing a few letters from the profane word or replacing letters with symbols would not render the message acceptable in a school setting.”

Turley said the ruling is “jarring and chilling.”

“The ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ slogan is more than just a substitute for profanity directed at the president (which itself has political content). It is using satire to denounce the press that often acts like a state media. It is commentary on the alliance between the government and the media in shaping what the public sees and hears.”

He warned the decision moves to far “into the regulation of political speech. Notably, politicians have used the phrase, including members of the House of Representatives despite a rule barring profanity on the floor. On October 21, 2021, Republican congressman Bill Posey concluded his remarks with ‘Let’s go, Brandon.’ It was not declared a violation of the House rules.”

The judge’s “default,” he said, is “to limit speech even when it is not overtly profane and concerns a major political controversy.”

Texas and Montana Score Major Win Against Biden Regime’s Overreach — Taxpayer-Funded Hospitals Blocked from Conducting Gender Transition Surgeries

In a significant victory for states’ rights and the protection of individual liberties, a U.S. District Court in Texas has issued a nationwide stay on key provisions of the Biden administration’s controversial Final Rule on Nondiscrimination in Health Programs and Activities.

The court’s decision comes after the states of Texas and Montana challenged the rule, arguing that it overstepped constitutional boundaries and imposed undue burdens on states and healthcare providers.

The Final Rule, issued on May 6, 2024, under the guise of preventing discrimination in healthcare, has been criticized for its broad interpretation of “discrimination on the basis of sex,” a term that the Biden administration sought to expand to include gender identity and sexual orientation.

Critics argue that this interpretation effectively forces healthcare providers, including those with religious objections, to perform procedures or provide services that contradict their deeply held beliefs.

On July 3, 2024, the court initially stayed the rule’s implementation in Texas and Montana. However, following motions from both the plaintiffs and the defendants, the court has now extended this stay nationwide.

The court found that the provisions of the rule challenged by Texas and Montana are likely unlawful as they apply to all participants, not just the plaintiffs in the case. As a result, the rule’s effective date has been postponed for all healthcare providers across the country.

According to the press release:

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton won a nationwide stay that blocks the Biden Administration from forcing federally-funded healthcare providers to conduct “gender transition” surgeries. Previously, Texas won a stay of agency action that blocked the rule from enforcement in the plaintiff States, Texas and Montana. Applying the same logic, Texas then argued for nationwide relief, and the court has expanded the relief to the entire country.

In May 2024, the Biden Administration promulgated a new rule under Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act that would defund healthcare providers across the country who refuse to perform or pay for experimental, unproven, and potentially dangerous “gender transition” procedures.

Under the rule, any medical institution that refused to perform the procedures could be stripped of all federal healthcare funds, including federal Medicaid and Medicare dollars. The rule further claimed to preempt any state laws forbidding such procedures.

In June 2024, Texas and Montana sued the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”), arguing that the rule was a plainly unconstitutional attempt to override state law. The rule also relied on a misapplication of the Affordable Care Act which never authorized HHS or any government agency to compel institutions to perform or pay for these procedures.

“When Biden and Harris sidestep the Constitution to force their unlawful, extremist agenda on the American public, we are fighting back and stopping them,” said Attorney General Paxton.

“By blocking this destructive policy, which would have forced taxpayer-funded hospitals to conduct unproven and dangerous ‘gender transition’ procedures, Texas has delivered a major victory for Americans across the country.”

Elon Musk Fires Off Warning to Americans After Brazil Bans X

Elon Musk fired off a warning to Americans after a Brazilian Supreme Court justice blocked X in Brazil.

The Brazilian Supreme Court Justice claimed he is banning X from Brazil because Elon Musk refused to name a legal representative to the country.

X’s Global Affairs disputed this Thursday evening.

“Soon, we expect Judge Alexandre de Moraes will order X to be shut down in Brazil – simply because we would not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents. These enemies include a duly elected Senator and a 16-year-old girl, among others,” X’s Global Affairs said.

“When we attempted to defend ourselves in court, Judge de Moraes threatened our Brazilian legal representative with imprisonment. Even after she resigned, he froze all of her bank accounts. Our challenges against his manifestly illegal actions were either dismissed or ignored. Judge de Moraes’ colleagues on the Supreme Court are either unwilling or unable to stand up to him,” Global Affairs said.

Election Odds Update: How Did Kamala Harris’ Widely Panned CNN Interview Affect Her?

Vice President Kamala Harris’ much-anticipated CNN interview on Thursday did not go as she would have hoped, at least according to presidential election oddsmakers.

Newsweek reported, “The vice president went from being the favorite to win with odds of 10/11 (52.4 percent) on Thursday to tied with Donald Trump on 19/20 (51.3 percent) each on Friday morning, according to the Star Sports betting company.”

“Over the same period, Trump’s odds of victory in November improved from 21/20 (48.8 percent) before the interview to 20/21 (51.2 percent), according to U.K. based bookmaker Betfair,” the outlet noted.

Star Sports betting analyst William Kedjanyi also spoke to Newsweek.

“Vice President Harris is now tied at 19/20 with Republican candidate Donald Trump, drifting slightly from 10/11 yesterday,” the analyst said. “The Californian had been 5/6 in recent weeks but she has failed to surge ahead of Trump in the market.”

Kedjanyi added: “GOP supporters will hope Trump can now go on to tip the balance in his favor, before November’s presidential election.”

Forbes pointed out that while Trump was behind Harris by about 2 points among bookmakers following the Democratic National Convention last week, but then gained some ground over the past week following Robert F. Kennedy’s endorsement of the Republican last Friday.

“Bettors on the crypto-based betting platform Polymarket are giving Trump slightly better odds of 50% to Harris’ 49%, while predicting both candidates have a roughly equal chance of winning the swing state of Pennsylvania,” Forbes said.

After all the glitz and glamour at the DNC last week, the visuals of the CNN interview made Harris look small, and not unlike the Wizard of Oz, created a “person behind the curtain”-effect.

Spectator editor-at-large Ben Domenech noted, “Television is mostly about visuals. Whoever set up this visual is terrible at their job. Bad lighting, makeup, hair, color choice, Walz’s collar askew, angle making Kamala look small, water cup center shot, off the rack poorly fitting suit… this whole thing just looks bad.”

“Forget all the things that she said,” Donalds contended. “People go back and watch her body language.”

“When you ask her about her policies and the flip-flopping, she’s looking down, she’s looking small. She doesn’t look like she has confidence in what she’s saying, because she doesn’t believe it,” the congressman continued. “She’s trying to remember what they coached her to say.”

“That is not the leadership that our country needs in this pressing hour. We need Donald J. Trump,” Donalds concluded.

Go back & watch Kamala’s body-language:

When she’s asked about family, she’s relaxed & makes eye-contact.

When she’s asked about policy, she’s NOT CONFIDENT & LOOKS AWAY.

Why?

Because she doesn’t believe these policies & is trying to remember what staffers coached her to say. pic.twitter.com/5jbqyX1RGj

Most rational folks learn to take what politicians say with a grain of salt, but when a candidate is making major policies flips just a few months out from Election Day, buyer (especially) beware.

Harris said she now backs building a border wall, opposes the banning of fracking, and is not pushing for Medicare-for-All as she did as a presidential candidate in 2019.

CNN’s Dana Bash raised the issue of major policy flips in the interview.

“How should voters look at some of the changes that you’ve made, that you’ve explained some of here in your policy? Is it because you have more experience now and you’ve learned more about the information? Is it because you were running for president in a Democratic primary?” Bash asked.

“Should they feel comfortable and confident that what you’re saying now is going to be your policy moving forward?” the CNN host further queried.

Harris responded, “I think the most important and most significant aspect of my policy perspective and decisions is my values have not changed.”

That’s all you need to know.

Her values will equal her policies. Harris herself offered the perfect example to prove the point.

Having co-sponsored the multi-trillion dollar Green New Deal as a senator, as vice president she cast the tie-breaking vote in the Inflation Reduction Act in August 2022.

“You mention the Green New Deal. I have always believed — and I have worked on it — that the climate crisis is real, that it is an urgent matter to which we should apply metrics that include holding ourselves to deadlines around time. We did that with the Inflation Reduction Act. … That value has not changed,” Harris told Bash.

By the way, the “green” initiatives included in the IRA are costing almost three times more than the administration forecast, Bloomberg reported in August 2023.

In April 2023, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, working with the investment firm Goldman Sachs, updated their estimated cost of the legislation’s green initiatives from $385 billion over a 10-year period to more than $1 trillion.

The CNN interview, her first sit down interview since becoming a presidential candidate 40 days ago, did not go well for Harris, and the oddsmakers and the voting population at large could readily see it.
