“Gold is having its good days, managing to rise despite headwinds from a rising dollar and stabilizing stocks,” said Ole Hansen, head of commodities strategy at Saxo Bank A/S. “The world remains a very uncertain place which continues to provide support for havens such as gold.”

President Trump on Wednesday rescinded his OMB memo on his federal spending freeze.

The White House clarified that Trump did not rescind the federal funding freeze.

“It is simply a rescission of the OMB memo,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said. “Why? To end any confusion created by the court’s injunction.”

“The President’s EO’s on federal funding remain in full force and effect, and will be rigorously implemented,” Karoline Leavitt added.

This is NOT a rescission of the federal funding freeze.

On Monday, Trump’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) put a temporary pause of agency grant, loan and other financial assistance programs.

“The American people elected Donald J. Trump to be President of the United States and gave him a mandate to increase the impact of every federal taxpayer dollar. In Fiscal Year 2024,of the nearly $10 trillion that the Federal Government spent, more than $3 trillion was Federal financial assistance, such as grants and loans,” the OMB said.

“This memorandum requires Federal agencies to identify and review all Federal financial assistance programs and supporting activities consistent with the President’s policies and requirements,” the OMB memo said.

This temporary pause will provide the Administration time to review agency programs and determine the best uses of the funding for those programs consistent with the law and thePresident’s priorities. The temporary pause will become effective on January 28, 2025, at 5:00 PM. Even before completing their comprehensive analysis, Federal agencies must immediately identify any legally mandated actions or deadlines for assistance programs arising while the pause remains in effect. Federal agencies must report this information to OMB along with ananalysis of the requirement. OMB also directs Federal agencies to pause all activities associated with open NOFOs, such as conducting merit review panels,” the OMB added.

President Donald Trump’s administration on Wednesday rescinded an order putting a widespread freeze on most federal grants and loans amid significant criticism, according to a new memo a source provided to NBC News.

A senior administration official confirmed the rescission Wednesday.

The initial order, which sparked chaos and confusion across Washington, was temporarily halted by a federal district judge Tuesday evening.

The directive from the Office of Management and Budget came Monday night, directing federal agencies to “temporarily pause all activities related to obligation or disbursement of all Federal financial assistance, and other relevant agency activities that may be implicated by the executive orders, including, but not limited to, financial assistance for foreign aid, nongovernmental organizations, DEI, woke gender ideology, and the green new deal.”

President Donald Trump has vowed to “take back” the Panama Canal, arguing that Panama has violated its neutrality pledge and allowed China to gain control over the waterway.

Emphasizing the canal’s strategic importance—a vital trade route built by the U.S. to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans—he warned that it must not fall into the “wrong hands.”

The canal is crucial to global trade, with over two-thirds of its cargo linked to the U.S., making it a key asset for both the global and American economies.

Trump has also criticized Panama for high toll fees, claiming that American ships and the U.S. Navy are being unfairly charged. He warns that allowing China to control or restrict access to the canal would pose a serious threat to U.S. national security.

At a Senate hearing on the Panama Canal, legal scholar Eugene Kontorovich argued that the U.S. has “preemptive authority” to intervene if China’s influence or high passage fees compromise the canal’s neutrality.

He cited the 1977 treaty signed by President Jimmy Carter, which transferred sovereignty to Panama but granted the U.S. the right to defend its neutrality.

Testimony from Federal Maritime Commission Chairman Louis Sola further underscored China’s growing presence in Panama since 2015, including Belt and Road Initiative projects and state-owned companies linked to the People’s Liberation Army.

Senator Ted Cruz warned against allowing China to expand its influence in the Western Hemisphere, while shipping industry experts emphasized the canal’s critical role in U.S. trade, noting that 75% of its traffic is linked to the United States.

With growing concerns over neutrality, economic leverage, and national security, the future of the Panama Canal remains uncertain.

Though the treaty permits military action to restore neutrality, it does not justify a permanent U.S. takeover, leaving the path forward uncertain.

However, even if a U.S. takeover were temporary, it would be logical for Washington to insist that Panama can only resume control of the canal once it demonstrates the ability and commitment to defend it.

Yet, without a standing army, Panama would struggle to prove that it is capable of ensuring the canal’s security against external threats.

Panama does not have a standing military, having abolished its armed forces in 1990 following the U.S. invasion that removed Manuel Noriega.

In 1994, this abolition was cemented in the country’s constitution, making Panama one of the few nations without a formal military.

Instead, security is maintained by the Public Forces, which include the National Police for internal security, the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN) for maritime and aerial defense, the National Border Service (SENAFRONT) for border security, and the Institutional Protection Service (SPI) for government and infrastructure protection.

While these forces handle domestic threats, Panama lacks the capability to defend the Panama Canal against a major external threat, relying instead on regional alliances and U.S. security cooperation.

This raises concerns about whether Panama alone can ensure the canal’s neutrality, particularly amid growing tensions over China’s economic influence in the region.

China’s involvement in the Panama Canal began in 1996 when Panama outsourced management of its entry ports—Cristóbal on the Atlantic and Balboa on the Pacific—to Hutchison Whampoa, a Hong Kong-based company.

At the time, U.S. officials viewed the deal as non-threatening, since Hong Kong was still under British rule.

However, after Hong Kong’s return to Chinese control in 1997, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) gained influence over Hutchison’s global operations, raising long-term strategic concerns.

Today, the Panama Canal faces growing risks from China’s commercial presence, embedded technologies, and strategic infrastructure projects.

These factors increase Beijing’s ability to disrupt or control the canal, a scenario that could have global security implications.

As these concerns intensify, it becomes increasingly urgent for Panama and its allies to address the strategic consequences of China’s influence in the region.

China’s dominance is not limited to Panama. Across Latin America, it employs aggressive tactics to secure critical infrastructure and resources.

Huawei has offered free 5G kits to Brazilian agribusinesses, while bribery has been used to secure contracts, as seen with El Salvadoran officials for a port deal in 2019, road projects in Bolivia, and a hydroelectric project in Ecuador involving former President Lenin Moreno.

This relentless push reflects Beijing’s broader strategy to control vital infrastructure, telecommunications, and natural resources, positioning itself as a dominant global power and a growing threat to U.S. interests.

Speaking at a Turning Point USA rally, he proposed restoring U.S. control over the canal, citing both national security risks and Panama’s apparent violation of treaty obligations.

While Trump suggested that diplomatic pressure could force Panama to remove China’s presence, he did not rule out military action if necessary.

His stance underscores the growing urgency of protecting the canal from foreign adversaries, particularly China, whose increasing influence threatens U.S. security and global stability.

President Donald Trump has announced that he is going to sign an executive order for the Department of Defense and Homeland Security to send illegal aliens to a detention center in Guantanamo Bay.

The facility will be able to hold up to 30,000 people who are in the United States illegally.

Trump said that the detention center will be used to house the “worst of the worst.”

“We have 30,000 beds in Guantanamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people,” Trump said.

The president continued, “Some of them are so bad we don’t even trust the countries to hold them because we don’t want them coming back; so, we’re going to send them out to Guantanamo.”

Trump explained that the order will take us “one step closer to eradicating the scourge of migrant crime in our communities once and for all.”

Trump announced the bill just before he signed the Laken Riley Act into law.

The Trump administration has issued a quota of 1,800 arrests per day by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) nationwide.

According to a report from the New York Post, the agency’s 25 offices must make at least 75 arrests each day to meet the quota.

Since President Trump took office less than 10 days ago, ICE has made approximately 4,500 arrests.

Speaking to CNN on Tuesday, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller explained that the quota is a “floor, not a ceiling.”

“So first of all, the numbers you cited are a floor, not a ceiling. Very importantly, they’re a floor. The goal is to arrest at least that many, but hopefully many more,” Miller said.

The Washington Post reports:

An ICE official who was not authorized to discuss the quota said the agency’s list of criminal suspects was sufficiently long, so officers would be able to continue prioritizing public safety and national security threats to meet quotas.

Last year, ICE told lawmakers there were about 670,000 immigrants on its caseload who had criminal convictions or faced criminal charges. Some are serving sentences in jails and prisons.

Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” border czar Tom Homan said the number of deportations will steadily increase.

“The aperture right now is constrained to public safety threats, national security threats as a smaller population,” Homan said. “We’re going to do the same priority base as President Trump’s promise. But as that aperture opens, there’ll be more arrests nationwide.”

As Democrat senators continued their interrogation of President Trump’s choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Bernie Sanders (Socialist-VT) came absolutely unglued.

As The Gateway Pundit’s Jordan Conradson reported, RFK Jr. appeared this morning to testify before the Senate Finance Committee to make his case as Trump’s pick for Secretary of Health and Human Services. RFK Jr., Kash Patel, and Tulsi Gabbard will sit for hearings this week.

Earlier, Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) set out from the beginning to conduct a massive character assassination on RFK Jr.. Still, the man at the forefront of Making America Healthy Again (along with President Trump) was more than ready and blew up his lies.

A short time later, Senator Mark Warner stepped up to the plate to bash RFK Jr., but he made an embarrassing mistake in his effort to ambush him.

Then, it was Comrade Bernie Sanders’s turn to interrogate RFK. Jr., and epic humiliation ensued.

Sanders brought photos of two onesies as props from RFK Jr.’s  Kennedy’s former organization, the Children’s Defense Fund. One said, “No Vax, No Problem,” while the other said, “Unvaxxed, Unafraid.” Then, he tried to entrap the HHS nominee with a stupid gotcha question.

“You have started a group called the Children’s Health Defense…Right now, they are selling these “onesies” for babies,” Sanders stated while showing the shirts. “You have said before this committee you are pro-vaccine, and yet your organization is making money selling a child’s product to parents, which casts fundamental doubt on the usefulness of vaccines.

Can you tell, since you are pro-vaccine, that you will have your organization take these products off the market?

“Senator, I have no power over this organization,” RFK Jr. replied. “I resigned from the board months ago.”

New York Post reported:

“The SpaceX CEO and ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ head said in a social media post he was asked by President Donald Trump to rescue Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who have both been in space since last June as part of what was initially meant to be a weeklong mission.

The two NASA pilots reached the International Space Station via a Starliner – Boeing’s first flight into space – but problems with the capsule quickly developed, including helium leaks and thruster problems.”

The Starliner returned to Earth empty after NASA determined the Starliner was not safe to a crewed flight back.

Wilmore and Williams will return in the SpaceX Dragon capsule.

President Trump’s Justice Department dismissed the indictment against former Congressman Jeff Fortenberry after he was ‘set up’ by the FBI and forced to resign from Congress.

Acting DC US Attorney Ed Martin dismissed the criminal prosecution.

The indictment was dismissed with prejudice.

As previously reported, Nebraska GOP Congressman Jeff Fortenberry resigned from Congress in 2022 after being convicted of lying to the FBI.

“Due to the difficulties of my current circumstances, I can no longer serve you effectively,” Fortenberry said in a statement.

Former Congressman Kevin McCarthy joined then-Speaker Pelosi and called for Fortenberry to step down.

“I think when someone’s convicted, it’s time to resign,” McCarthy previously told reporters, according to Politico.

“Congressman Fortenberry’s conviction represents a breach of the public trust and confidence in his ability to serve. No one is above the law,” Pelosi, a lifelong crook who mysteriously made hundreds of millions of dollars as a member of Congress said.

Fortenberry was convicted on three felony counts – one count of falsifying and concealing material facts and two counts of making false statements (each count carries five years) by a federal grand jury in Los Angeles.

Fortenberry’s lawyers argued at trial that the FBI lured the Congressman into giving two interviews – then indicted him after he couldn’t remember all the details about a conversation he had with an FBI informant about the illicit campaign donation.

“Defense lawyers said the FBI “set up” Fortenberry after a national investigation fizzled into foreign money funneled to members of Congress. They said Fortenberry’s flaw was voluntarily meeting with agents and prosecutors to help their probe and having a faulty memory.” – AP reported.

Last year the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals wiped out Fortenberry’s conviction after his defense lawyers argued the FBI set him up.

The appeals court said the FBI interviews took place in Nebraska at Fortenberry’s home and in DC. Meanwhile, a Los Angeles jury convicted Fortenberry of the alleged crimes that took place in another state.

“Fortenberry’s trial took place in a state where no charged crime was committed, and before a jury drawn from the vicinage of the federal agencies that investigated the defendant,” US District Judge James Donato wrote in the opinion last year.

“The Constitution does not permit this. Fortenberry’s convictions are reversed so that he may be retried, if at all, in a proper venue,” the opinion read.

“We are gratified by the Ninth Circuit’s decision. Celeste and I would like to thank everyone who has stood by us and supported us with their kindness and friendship,” Fortenberry said in a statement.

In Brussels, European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius said the EU is ready to defend their member state, Denmark, while top diplomat Kaja Kallas said Europeans should not underestimate their own power.

“The sense of alert spiked after details emerged of a 45-minute phone call between Trump and Frederiksen, during which Trump insisted on his desire to take over the island and Frederiksen replied Greenland was not for sale. The phone call was described as ‘icy’ and ‘aggressive’ by the New York Times. The Financial Times called it ‘fiery’ and ‘horrendous’, citing sources.”

Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said he has discussed with Denmark sending troops to Greenland in response to Trump’s intent to annex the island.

Politico reported:

“Asked about calls to send EU troops to Greenland, Barrot said in an interview with France’s Sud Radio that France had “started discussing [troop deployment] with Denmark,” but that it was not “Denmark’s wish” to proceed with the idea.

[…] ‘If Denmark calls for help, France will be there’, he said. ‘The European borders are sovereign whether it’s north, south, east and west … nobody can allow themselves to mess around with our borders’.”

French soldiers are always on the brink of joining the world’s conflicts – but they never go.

The European Union foreign ministers expressed their ‘very strong support’ for Copenhagen and were reportedly ‘ready to consider’ sending troops if needed, says Barrot.

“The French foreign minister, however, said he did not believe the U.S. would invade Greenland. ‘It won’t happen, people don’t invade EU territories’, he said.”

But not everyone was happy singing war hymns in anticipation. British PM Keir Starmer refused to back Denmark in its ongoing row with Donald Trump over Greenland.

GB News reported:

“’I’m not going to comment on issues that are not central to what I have to deal with in relation to the UK and the US relationship’, he said.”

The reaction was pure fury by Labour MP and Starmer critic Diane Abbott, who said her party’s leader is ‘terrified’ of the US President.

“’Starmer is terrified of Trump’, she wrote on social media, laying into his ‘refusal to comment on Trump’s plan to buy Greenland’.

[…] And Danish foreign minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has vowed: ‘Trump will not have Greenland. Greenland is Greenland. And the Greenlandic people are a people, also in the sense of international law. This is also why we have said time and again that it is ultimately Greenland that decides Greenland’s situation’.”

The Trump administration has issued a quota of 1,800 arrests per day by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) nationwide.

According to a report from the New York Post, the agency’s 25 offices must make at least 75 arrests each day to meet the quota.

Since President Trump took office less than 10 days ago, ICE has made approximately 4,500 arrests.

Speaking to CNN on Tuesday, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller explained that the quota is a “floor, not a ceiling.”

“So first of all, the numbers you cited are a floor, not a ceiling. Very importantly, they’re a floor. The goal is to arrest at least that many, but hopefully many more,” Miller said.

The Washington Post reports:

An ICE official who was not authorized to discuss the quota said the agency’s list of criminal suspects was sufficiently long, so officers would be able to continue prioritizing public safety and national security threats to meet quotas.

Last year, ICE told lawmakers there were about 670,000 immigrants on its caseload who had criminal convictions or faced criminal charges. Some are serving sentences in jails and prisons.

Appearing on ABC’s “This Week,” border czar Tom Homan said the number of deportations will steadily increase.

“The aperture right now is constrained to public safety threats, national security threats as a smaller population,” Homan said. “We’re going to do the same priority base as President Trump’s promise. But as that aperture opens, there’ll be more arrests nationwide.”
