The Legal Risks Facing Letitia James: Mortgage Fraud, Campaign Violations, Nonprofit Misuse, and There’s More

Guest post by Joel Gilbert

President Trump declared in the Oval Office on Tuesday that New York Attorney General Letitia James was “a total crook” and said the Justice Department would “do what’s right” after receiving a criminal referral accusing her of mortgage fraud.

He added, “she’s a disaster for New York. She’s a horrible, horrible human being”.

New York Attorney General Letitia James has for years cultivated an image as a champion of ethics, transparency, and the rule of law.

However, my review of public records and court filings, which I have documented in The Gateway Pundit series “The Letitia Files”, reveals a range of troubling issues that could pose serious legal and ethical consequences for New York’s top law enforcement official.

These issues span mortgage fraud, federal loan misrepresentation, campaign finance violations, and improper coordination with a nonprofit entity. Here is a chronological summary:

1. Mortgage Fraud Through Misrepresentation of Familial Relationship
One of the most striking revelations emerges from a 1983 real estate transaction in which Letitia James and her father, Robert James, obtained a mortgage as “husband and wife.”

The loan application to Kadilac Funding Corporation listed them as a married couple, despite the fact that Letitia is his daughter. Such a misrepresentation of a relationship to qualify for a loan could constitute mortgage fraud under both federal and New York State law.

Under 18 U.S.C. § 1014, knowingly making false statements to influence a financial institution carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

New York law also prohibits filing false written statements with intent to defraud under Penal Law § 175.35. If the misrepresentation were found to be intentional, the consequences could be dire: criminal prosecution, disbarment, and even removal from public office.

2. Undisclosed Virginia Foreclosure Purchase
In December 2008, James’s name appeared on the “Final Foreclosure Accounting” as a purchaser of a single-family home at 21 Peters Street in Martinsville, Virginia, alongside Johnsie and Philip Finney, her relatives.

Notably, her first name was misspelled as “Letitua,” raising questions about whether James, a New York City Council member, was trying to hide her identity from public searches. The Finneys had previously owned the property before being foreclosed on by Wells Fargo Bank.

Despite her involvement as a buyer, James’s name does not appear on the subsequent “Substitute Trustee’s Deed” a few weeks later in January 2009, which lists only the Finneys as the new owners.

There is no recorded transaction indicating James sold her interest to the Finneys, suggesting potential violations of Virginia property laws and raising concerns about New York state campaign asset disclosures and possible fraud.

3. HAMP Loan Fraud Through Misrepresentations of Property Details and Income
In 2011, James successfully disposed of her 10% interest private bank mortgage rate on her Brooklyn apartment building by refinancing with a federal Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP) loan, and receiving a favorable 2.7% interest rate on the back of the American taxpayer.

However, documents indicate that James qualified for the loan only by falsely stating her apartment building had only four rental units, when the Certificate of Occupancy actually showed five.

My visit to James’s apartment building confirmed five apartment units. HAMP explicitly excludes properties with five or more units.

James also claimed a highly questionable financial hardship to obtain the loan, despite an income of around $14,000 per month.

These discrepancies could trigger legal liability for James under the False Claims Act, which allows the federal government to impose treble damages and fines for false statements made in order to obtain government funds.

Additionally, such misrepresentations could violate NY Penal Law § 176.05 concerning insurance and mortgage fraud.

Additionally, ethical and reputational implications remain potent – especially for an official whose public persona is built on holding others accountable under her often-stated mantra “No one is above the law”.

4. Illegal Campaign Coordination with a Nonprofit
During her 2013 campaign for New York City Public Advocate, James paid the 501(c)(4) nonprofit New York Communities for Change (NYCC) for services including “canvassing,” “campaign workers,” and “staff/rent/phone.”

This raises serious red flags. IRS rules strictly limit the ability of 501(c)(4) organizations to engage in partisan political activity, and coordination with a campaign may constitute an illegal in-kind contribution under both federal and New York election law.

These allegations mirror the kind of nonprofit abuses James herself later warned against.

This coordination could result in IRS revocation of the nonprofit’s tax-exempt status, campaign finance penalties, and a referral for criminal investigation. Moreover, the hypocrisy could undermine James’ credibility in enforcing nonprofit laws statewide.

5. Documented Campaign Finance Violations
Letitia James’s campaigns for public office have repeatedly run afoul of the New York City Campaign Finance Board.

Audits of her 2013 and 2017 campaigns revealed improper contributions, unreported in-kind support, and expenditures not directly related to campaign activity. In both cases, she was required to repay taxpayer-provided matching funds and accept financial penalties.

While these offenses were administrative rather than criminal, the pattern raises broader concerns about compliance culture within her political operation.

For an elected official tasked with enforcing campaign finance and public integrity laws, repeated violations – no matter how procedural – raise serious questions about selective enforcement and political double standards.

6. Misrepresentation of Her Primary Residence in Norfolk, Virginia
As detailed in Sam Antar’s White Collar Fraud website, in August 2023, Letitia James co-signed for a mortgage for a property located at 604 Sterling Street in Norfolk, Virginia, alongside her niece, Shamice Thompson-Hairston.

As part of this transaction, James executed a notarized Power of Attorney (POA) on August 17, 2023, which included a sworn declaration stating, “I hereby declare that I intend to occupy this property as my principal residence.”

This declaration was instrumental in securing favorable lower mortgage rates typically reserved for primary residences.

William Pulte, Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, cited this declaration in an April 14, 2025 letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, alleging that James may have falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government-backed assistance and loans with more favorable terms.

Pulte emphasized that primary residence mortgages receive lower interest rates and more favorable loan terms compared to secondary residences. James’s HAMP loan was also cited by Pulte for investigation.

Conclusion
Letitia James has risen through New York’s political ranks advertising herself as a watchdog for justice. But her own records show a pattern of legal and ethical misconduct – from her mortgage practices to campaign irregularities to misuse of a nonprofit. I even documented that Letitia James could be a “slumlord”.

If the laws Letitia James enforces in New York state are to have legitimacy, the same scrutiny applied to others must apply to her. A failure to hold James accountable for her issues can only erode public trust in the office she holds. New York state simply cannot have an attorney general who behaves as though she is “above the law”.

Massive MAGA Triumph for Free Speech as Germany BACKTRACKS Spying on AfD Opposition! “Heads Will Roll” at Secret Police “Thanks to America!”

Ulrich Mühe in Oscar-winning Stasi drama “The Lives of Others”

Ahead of today’s phone call between President Trump and the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (Gateway Pundit reported), the German domestic spy agency has backtracked on calling the largest opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD) “confirmed far-right” and spying on it.

The Trump administration had criticized the totalitarian measures announced last Friday by the parting leftist German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser on her way out the door, citing an alleged secret police report which was kept secret from the AfD but leaked to America-hating Der Spiegel magazine.

Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Commitee, wrote to DNI Tulsi Gabbard yesterday, urging the US government suspend co-operation with German intel agencies being used to spy on the opposition (Gateway Pundit reported).

I asked @DNIGabbard to ensure that no American intelligence agencies cooperate with German authorities involved in surveiling domestic political opponents.

These police state tactics are more suited for Russia or Communist China, not Western Europe’s largest country.…

— Tom Cotton (@SenTomCotton) May 7, 2025

“I understand that liberal elites on both sides of the Atlantic loathe the AfD, but AfD’s platform has resonated with many Germans. Unsurprisingly so, since an agenda of strong borders, energy independence, and economic growth has appealed to our own electorate and may other Western democracies. Rather than trying to undermine the AfD using the tools of authoritarian states, Germany’s incoming government might be better advised to consider why the AfD continues to gain electoral ground and how German’s government can address the reasonable concerns of its citizens,” Cotton wrote.

Due to stringent privacy laws, German intel agencies have their hands tied and largely depend on the NSA for SigInt to prevent terror attacks in their own country.

Now, facing a lawsuit by the AfD, the German “Office for the Protection of the Constitution” (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz – BfV) today announced it will rescind the decision pending legal resolution.

“The defendant will not publicly describe the AfD as ‘certified far-right’ until a court decision is made in this urgent procedure”, the BfV stated, adding the press release cited by Interior Minister Faeser “will be removed from the website of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.”

“Professionally, this is a complete surrender by the German domestic intelligence service”, free spech lawyer Joachim Steinhöfel told NIUS website.

“A lot of heads will have to roll at the agency now. If the new Interior Minister deserves credit for this step, he has done a service to democracy. Of course, we also have to thank the Americans for exerting massive pressure.”

Illegal Deported by Trump Now Accused of Planning Satanic ‘Execution of Children’ at Lady Gaga Concert

American citizens should continue to thank their lucky stars that President Donald Trump won last November.

Everyone knows one of the top accomplishments of his administration to date has been securing the border and beginning the mass deportation of criminal illegal aliens.

As border czar Tom Homan has said, the president’s direction is for “the worst to go first.”

Apparently, one of those worst was 44-year-old Brazilian national Luis da Silva, who was deported from the U.S. back to his home nation last month, the New York Post reported.

According to Brazilian officials, he was planning to commit mass murder at a Lady Gaga concert Saturday that was attended by over 2 million people at Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach.

Da Silva “wanted to livestream the execution of children and set up bombs close to the stage during Gaga’s performance,” investigators said, according to the Post.

“He said that the singer was a Satanist and that he was going to perform a Satanist ritual too, killing a child during the show,” officer Felipe Curi, a Rio de Janeiro Civil Police secretary, told reporters Monday.

Police took da Silva and an alleged accomplice  — a 17-year-old boy — into custody just hours before the concert began.

A police complaint stated that the two “planned to use Molotov cocktails and explosive backpacks.”

Da Silva was arrested on an illegal gun possession charge and was later released on bail.

Lady Gaga has not yet publicly responded to the planned attack.

Her representative said in a Sunday statement, “We learned of this alleged threat through media reports this morning,” adding, “Prior to and during the show, there were no known security concerns, nor any communication from police or authorities to Lady Gaga about any potential risks.”

The performer posted on social media regarding the concert itself, “Nothing could prepare me for the feeling I had during last night’s show — the absolute pride and joy I felt singing for the people of Brazil. The sight of the crowd during my opening songs took my breath away.”

— Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) May 4, 2025

She added, “An estimated 2.5 million people came to see me sing, the biggest crowd for any woman in history. I wish I could share this feeling with the whole world.”

Another emotion Lady Gaga should feel is gratitude that none of her fans were murdered by an apparent whacked-out Satanist.

We cannot get people like da Silva out of the U.S. fast enough.

Border Czar Tom Homan Delivers a Savage Response to AOC After She Taunts Him With a ‘Challenge’ During Town Hall (VIDEO)

Credit: Fox News YouTube Screenshot

Border Czar Tom Homan has now responded to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s stupid ‘challenge’ to him during an event last week.

The Gateway Pundit previously reported that AOC held a sold-out town hall in Jackson Heights, a neighborhood in Queens, to focus on her grievances against the Trump Administration. She expected a fully compliant audience that would clap like seals whenever she opened her mouth to lie.

But chaos unfolded right as AOC first began speaking. When she pulled up a PowerPoint presentation that discussed the Trump administration’s budget cuts, a pro-Hamas audience member and former fan quickly interrupted her before she could even get through the first slide.

This was humiliating enough for AOC. But as Fox News reported, she decided to wave a cape in front of a raging bull later during the town hall when she taunted border czar Tom Homan with a challenge he would be more than happy to carry out.

“Tom Homan said he was going to refer me to the DOJ because I’m using my free speech rights in order to advise people of their constitutional protections. To that I say: Come for me, do I look like I care?” Ocasio-Cortez told her brainwashed fans.

Homan fired back at AOC in savage fashion during an appearance Tuesday night on The Ingraham Angle.

“I take pleasure that I can live in her mind rent-free every day,” Homan told host Laura Ingraham. “But we all know what she’s doing. Like I just said, she’s educating the worst of the worst on how to invade law enforcement.

“But the tables have now turned,” Homan continued. “She’s educating people how to get prosecuted. Because you have a final order, it is illegal not to comply with that order. It’s a crime to take steps not to comply with ICE removal orders or not comply with ICE actions taken in custody.

Homan closed by telling AOC to do some actual reading on immigration law.

“You can’t hinder your own removal that was ordered by the federal judge. I would like AOC to read Title 8, United States Code 1253, because it’s starting tomorrow.”

As Jim Hoft reported in February, Homan announced on Fox News’s “Ingraham Angle” that he had sent an email to the Deputy Attorney General asking the department to investigate AOC. This came after AOC proudly announced that she was holding webinars to teach illegal aliens how to avoid ICE agents in New York City.

“At what level is that impediment?” Homan asked. “I’m not an attorney… Is that impeding our law enforcement efforts?”

“If so, what are we going to do about it? Is she crossing the line? I’m working with the Department of Justice and finding out where is that line that they cross.”

OUTSTANDING: Wyoming Republican Rep. Harriet Hageman Introduces ‘No Student Visas for Sanctuary Cities Act’

Conservative Republican Rep. Harriet Hageman of Wyoming is introducing a new piece of legislation aimed at keeping student visas out of so-called sanctuary cities.

Hageman defeated former Rep. Liz Cheney two years ago in what may be the biggest upgrade in Wyoming history.

This bill will be greeted with hostility by Democrats, who have made it clear that they care more about illegals than American citizens, but every Republican in Congress should embrace it.

Breitbart News reported:

Exclusive–Rep. Hageman Introduces ‘No Student Visas for Sanctuary Cities Act’

A new bill aimed at holding sanctuary cities “accountable” has been introduced by Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY), with Breitbart News obtaining exclusive access to the proposed legislation as well as the congresswoman’s letter to President Donald Trump pledging to help him stop Democrat-controlled jurisdictions from harboring illegal migrants.

The “No Student Visas for Sanctuary Cities Act,” introduced Wednesday, would “hold sanctuary cities accountable for their violation of federal law and for their aiding of illegal aliens” by amending the Immigration and Nationality Act to prohibit student visas being granted for institutions in such jurisdictions, Hageman’s office told Breitbart News.

“Leftist proponents of open borders, or no borders at all, have infiltrated many of our states, cities, and counties and caused the so-called leaders within them to completely undermine the rule of law,” the congresswoman explained. “Instead of protecting their citizens, sanctuary city officials have chosen those here unlawfully — many of them members of international cartels and other transnational criminal organizations –- over their constituents.”

Hageman, who has represented Wyoming’s at-large congressional district after beating former Rep. Liz Cheney in the 2022 Republican primary, went on to explain that “Prohibiting student visas is an accountability measure to pressure obstructors of justice to take action in complying with the rules set forth by Congressional representatives of the American people.”

The Trump administration has already revoked thousands of student visas and more of that is coming. Hageman is addressing the issue from the other side by suggesting that we should issue less student visas, especially to schools in cities that ignore our immigration laws.

Trump’s WWI Victory Day Is a Bad Idea

Trump’s WWI Victory Day Is a Bad Idea

The president should instead reiterate his message against endless U.S. wars.

The United States looms large on the world stage, but it wasn’t always so important. President Donald Trump retrospectively applied America’s present role to yesterday’s world when he declared: “We won both [World] Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything.” Henceforth, he wants to call Veteran’s Day “Victory Day for World War I.”

While the U.S. played a decisive role in that conflict, shifting the balance of power irreversibly against Imperial Germany after the other participants had exhausted themselves, Washington’s contribution remained much less than those of many allied belligerents. While U.S. soldiers were brave, their commanders were anything but brilliant, failing to learn from the allies and running up unnecessary casualties.

The most important contribution measure is the number of military personnel killed. American sacrificed 116,700 men in the war. That was a huge loss, to be sure, though less than a fifth of the number killed during the Civil War. However, America’s toll was small compared to that of the other allied combatants, with the U.S. ranking only number 8 on the allied side. Russia lost around two million men. (Most of the casualty figures for World War I are rough estimates.) France had 1.4 million deaths. Great Britain suffered almost 900,000. Estimates of Italy’s toll run as high as 700,000. Serbia lost in the range of 400,000 men. Romania endured around 300,000 deaths. British dominions and colonies—most importantly Australia, Canada, India, and New Zealand—collectively lost about 215,000. Washington was only ahead of Belgium, Greece, Montenegro, Portugal, and Japan.

There are much bigger problems with Trump’s claim, however. First, the U.S. had no reason to join Europe’s tragic murderfest. Second, the military triumph turned into a political fiasco, and just a couple decades later, a military disaster for the entire world. So bad were the consequences that by entering that conflict Woodrow Wilson staked his claim to being the country’s worst president.

Terry W. Hamby, chairman of the WWI Centennial Commission, dedicated a memorial to World War I, intoning: “The doughboys we are honoring today were the best of their generation. Their average age was 24.” Why were they sacrificed?

It surely wasn’t for America. None of the combatants threatened the U.S., for which the Atlantic acted as a vast moat. Although Anglo-Saxons, who originally populated the colonies, dominated U.S. politics and finance, that was no reason to go to war on Britain’s behalf. Indeed, German descendants were almost as populous. And still are. As of 2020, the number of Americans with British ancestry was 62 million. The number with German ancestry was 41 million. Nor was Washington’s entry into the war justified to ensure that financial interests got repaid on their generous loans to the Entente powers. Americans should not die to preserve lenders’ profits.

Finally, talk of a war for democracy, or to end war, or to destroy Prussian militarism, was just nonsense. The allies included an antisemitic despotism (Russia), a militant revanchist republic (France), the world’s leading colonial power (Great Britain), the globe’s cruelest colonial master (Belgium), a populist regime that chose war for territorial plunder (Italy), and a terrorist state that enabled the royal murder that triggered the conflict (Serbia). The so-called Central Powers were no friends of liberty, but they were generally evolving in a more liberal direction and likely would have continued to do so had war not intervened.

Unfortunately, America’s president at the time was the megalomaniac and sanctimonious Woodrow Wilson. A virulent racist, he also resisted women’s suffrage. He advocated imposing national conscription for the first time, proposed making it illegal to criticize him, and created what is widely recognized as the low point of American civil liberties.

Why did he decide on war? He was an Anglophile, who essentially believed that London could do no wrong. He wanted to transform the global order and recognized that he had to make the U.S. a belligerent to gain a “seat at the table” ending the war. Why worry about the many Americans who would needlessly die as a result?

The closest issue to a casus belli was the German U-boat (“unterseeboot” or submarine) campaign. Submarine warfare is terrible, but so was the British starvation blockade. It was illegal under international law and struck civilians as well as soldiers, killing several hundred thousand innocents by war’s end. The Germans began the war by having U-boats surface to seek the surrender of merchantmen, but the British armed civilian ships, designated them as reserve cruisers, and ordered them to ram any subs so foolish as to rise—prompting U-boats to remain submerged and sink vessels without mercy.

Moreover, even civilian liners, including the celebrated Lusitania, carried munitions through what amounted to a war zone. In the Lusitania’s case, the German embassy purchased ads warning Americans not to book passage on a legitimate military target. In May 1915 near Britain’s coast, it was sunk. Wilson bizarrely asserted that just one American baby on a commercial liner or cargo ship carrying bullets and bombs immunized its passage. This while the British navy was stopping even the ships of neutrals, like America, to prevent food from reaching the European continent. Wilson admitted that he was committed to London’s victory: “England is fighting our fight, and you may well understand that I shall not, in the present state of the world’s affairs, place obstacles in her way when she is fighting for her life—and the life of the world.” So much for his pretense of neutrality.

Germany restricted its U-boat operations until January 1917. Then, in a desperate move to win amid a two-front fight, it again targeted nominally civilian shipping. Wilson called for war, claiming “the recent course of the Imperial German Government to be in fact nothing less than war against the Government and people of the United States.” It was a lie, but one that conveniently advanced his desire to sit among the victors. Never were America or American interests threatened. Never was there anything at stake that warranted jumping into a merciless continental abattoir.

There was more movement on the eastern front, but it wasn’t until the first Russian revolution, in the February 1917 (March in the Western calendar), that victory there seemed possible for Germany, and even then, a compromise peace in the west was likely, given the allies’ advantages there. It was Washington’s entry that empowered the Entente to win, though not immediately. The conflict raged on, as the allies figured U.S. reinforcements would lead to victory while Germany gambled on another major offensive before American troops were ready for action. The offensive failed, so Germany finally yielded and sought an armistice, which took effect on November 11, 1918.

What might have been a compromise peace that preserved enough of the old world order to forestall revolutionary chaos and violence turned into a rout. The Austro-Hungarian, German, and Russian empires all collapsed, leading to authoritarian, and sometimes totalitarian systems. The Ottoman Empire’s disintegration yielded multiple rounds of conflict. Italy abandoned democracy and embraced the blustering dictatorship of Benito Mussolini. Communism, followed by fascism and, most virulently and aggressively, Nazism, reshaped Europe.

The Versailles Treaty with Germany (and related pacts with the other defeated Central Powers) rewarded the allies’ desire for vengeance and Wilson’s fantasy to transform the globe. The winners plundered the losers and traded peoples and lands as if playing a global game of Monopoly. The allies claimed to exalt self-determination. However, they forced disfavored minority groups, most notably Germans, to remain inside newly independent allied nations, particularly Czechoslovakia and Poland. Some Germans called these new nations Saisonstaaten, or “states for a season,” which provided the grievances used by Adolf Hitler and were soon swept away.

Alas, the resulting settlement failed in almost every particular. It treated Germany badly enough to create an enduring grievance against the allies and the post-World War I order they created. However, it was not truly “Carthaginian,” severe enough to prevent Germany, with its large population and significant industrial might, from reviving and seeking revenge. The allies tried appeasement too late. It could have prevented The Great War, but Hitler was the one political leader on the European continent who could not be appeased, having an agenda that could be achieved only through war.

It took just 20 years for the next conflict to arise. World War II caused even greater material destruction, loss of life, political disintegration, and future threats. That fight had barely ended after Germany’s surrender when the Cold War emerged. Although the U.S. and Soviet Union avoided open conflict, there were numerous limited but costly battles and proxy wars involving allied states. Only in the early 1990s, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, end of the Warsaw Pact, democratization of the former Eastern bloc, and collapse of the Soviet Union, did the world return to the age before, in which Germany’s short-lived Brest-Litovsk Treaty proved to be a lot more realistic than the Versailles debacle.

None of this looks very much like a “victory” for the U.S. Trump should drop his embarrassing triumphalism which denigrates Europe’s contribution to both World War I and World War II. Even more, he should stop calling what was a political disaster an American achievement. Instead, he should reiterate his message that Americans should not get involved in endless wars around the globe.

That certainly is what the Founders would do. In his famous Farewell Address George Washington warned Americans against undertaking “projects of pride, ambition, and other sinister and pernicious motives.” This foreign policy approach “gives to ambitious, corrupted, or deluded citizens (who devote themselves to the favorite nation), facility to betray or sacrifice the interests of their own country, without odium, sometimes even with popularity; guiding, with the appearances of a virtuous sense of obligation, a commendable deference for public opinion, or a laudable zeal for public good, the base or foolish compliances of ambition, corruption, or infatuation.” Sounds like the U.S. today.

Instead, America’s first president urged his fellow citizens to have with other nations “as little political connection as possible,” and not to “entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils” of other states’ “ambition, rivalship, interest, humor or caprice.” Had past presidents followed this approach, imagine the lives that would have been saved and wealth that would have been preserved. And imagine what Americans can achieve in the future if President Trump adopts that approach today.

By Any Name, A Day For Remembering—and Building

By Any Name, A Day For Remembering—and Building

Celebrations are well and good, but how about some worthy memorials?

Happy Victory Day for World War II, for those who join President Trump in the new style.  Or, if you prefer, Happy VE-Day.  The “V” in VE-Day does, after all, stand for “Victory.”

Since it’s Trump, it comes with controversy. In that May 1 missive, the 47th president also said that he would rename Veterans Day, November 11, as “World War I Victory Day.” But after critics pointed out that this renaming would deprive veterans of other conflicts of recognition, the White House backtracked; so Veterans Day will stay, to be joined by a new victory proclamation.

Other critics pointed out that the May 8 designation elides the fact that World War II in the Pacific—in which 111,000 GIs died—didn’t officially end until September 2, 1945, when Japan surrendered. Almost certainly, Trump will address this concern, too.

Still, Trump was on to something important when he wrote, “We never celebrate anything—That’s because we don’t have leaders any more, that know how to do so. We’re going to start celebrating our victories again.”

To start the new golden age of celebrations, Trump plans a big parade this June for the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. It’s a cinch, too, that we’ll see plenty more patriotic displays in the coming semiquincentennial of the U.S. itself.

Yet here we can pause to say that while proclamations, parades and pageants are great, even greater are permanent memorials. For instance, only a tiny fraction of the Americans who fought at Iwo Jima in 1945 are still alive, and yet their valor—and the valor of all Marines, in all wars and battles—is grandly recalled at the Marine Corps War Memorial, dedicated in 1954. The word “iconic” is overused, and yet the tableau of the six Marines (three of whom were killed on the island, along with nearly 7,000 other servicemen) is, for sure, among the most electric and reverential images in American history.

A war memorial ought to serve two purposes: First, it should commemorate the sacrifices of war—not just of those who died, but also of those who survived and came home. Second, it should inspire new generations to emulate the commitment and bravery of their predecessors.

To those two ends, war memorials were once deliberately made impressive. Indianapolis is the site of one standout structure from the 1920s; it’s an acropolis for Hoosier heroes.

Yet in the last few decades, heroism fell out of fashion with the taste-dictating elites. The hinge was the Vietnam War, which provoked a left-wing counterculture that congealed into a new liberal establishment.

So the Big Chill generation, following its own New Rules, took control of public spaces in many places. For instance, in Washington, DC, any commemoration of the Vietnam War would have to abide by the enlightened verdict that the war was, at best, a tragic mistake. This judgment guided the design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, completed in 1982.

The Vietnam memorial is barely a half-mile from the Marine memorial, just across the Potomac, and yet the gulf between the two is chasmic. Whereas Iwo Jima is proudly vertical—men raising a flag into the sky—Vietnam is horizontal. The latter is, literally, below the surface. It’s a mournful grave, not a civic rallying point.

The Vietnam memorial was, of course, intended to be a tombstone (more precisely, a cenotaph). Here’s how its architect, Maya Lin, described her design back in 1981:

Walking through this park-like area, the memorial appears as a rift in the earth, a long, polished, black stone wall, emerging from and receding into the earth. Approaching the memorial, the ground slopes gently downward, and the low walls emerging on either side, growing out of the earth, extend and converge at a point below and ahead. Walking into the grassy site contained by the walls of this memorial, we can barely make out the carved names upon the memorial’s walls. These names, seemingly infinite in number, convey the sense of overwhelming numbers. (Emphasis added.)

The defeatism of the memorial was so obvious that actual Vietnam veterans insisted on the addition of three bronze soldiers, standing upright. In response, Lin was furious, calling the statues a “coup” against her creation; in her outrage, she was joined, of course, by much of the “arts community.”

Fortunately, President Ronald Reagan was leading the federal government back then. On November 11, 1984, fresh from his landslide 49-state reelection—even though he won only 13.7 percent of the vote in the District of Columbia—Reagan dedicated the additional, vertical, statues.

One needn’t think the Vietnam War was a noble cause to nevertheless believe that the GIs who fought there deserve something more uplifting than a “rift in the earth… receding into the earth.”

Without a doubt, the Vietnam memorial is somberly beautiful in its ebon bleakness. And it’s popular, a place where families come to touch the gilded name of an ancestor, and perhaps make a rubbing. Yet that’s what cemeteries are for; they fulfill a different function than martial monuments.

The Vietnam memorial set the tone for other shrines of that era. For instance, in the early ’80s, friends of the U.S. Navy had the idea of putting a triumphal arch over Pennsylvania Avenue. Instantly, the elites pounced, barely hiding their anti-military sentiments behind the mask of sophisticated aesthetics. (Never mind that triumphal arches don’t seem to have hurt Paris much.)

From their Deep State-y positions of privileged power—including the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission—the proto-woke prevailed. When the U.S. Navy Memorial was finally dedicated in 1987, it was a big flat disappointment, its one lone figure notwithstanding.  Despite its prime location on Pennsylvania Avenue, its mission as a memorial is virtually unnoticed; it’s more known to skateboarders than future sailors.

A similar ambush befell the Second World War memorial at the turn of the century. The original design was too vertical, said the snobs. “Watered down Albert Speer,” snapped the New Yorker. Once again, the arts-ocracy shrank a military memorial so it wasn’t quite so “fascist.”

To be sure, other edifices, built outside the District of Columbia, have had better luck. The U.S. Air Force Memorial, dedicated in 2006, rises 270 feet over Arlington, Virginia, visible even from a rift in the District.

So now Trump is the commander-in-chief of DC. He can issue statements, and maybe even change names on a calendar, but can he change the way memorials are conceived and constructed? Will he be the impetus behind expressions of patriotism?

From a hundred circling camps, heroic shades are watching.

It’s Not Too Late to Get Admin Staffing Right

It’s Not Too Late to Get Admin Staffing Right

Two swallows—or firings—do not a summer make.

Do you hear calliope music? That’s the sound of the Trump staffing carousel steaming up to speed. Mike Waltz was kicked upstairs last Thursday to the UN ambassadorship from his perch atop the National Security Council, following a thoroughgoing purge of his underlings. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will fill the position of national security advisor ad hoc, but this is doubtless temporary, as it will cut into his time perusing foreign students’ social media for deportable speech offenses. (This is, in some way, a shame; the NSC is a perverse workaround for the fact that State and CIA don’t actually do their jobs, and its permanent incorporation into the normal structures of the executive branch would be a welcome development, all told.)

Who will it be? The names we’ve heard are Michael Anton, Seb Gorka, Ric Grenell. (Grenell will probably denounce this assessment on Twitter as part of his inexplicable but apparently implacable social-media enmity with our executive director.) Time will tell. Our own preferences are obvious.

More interesting is the abattoir of the Pentagon. When, in the wake of Signalgate, we gently suggested that Waltz ought to get the sack, our main point was nonideological: This fellow shouldn’t be allowed within sniffing distance of secrets of state. At that time, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was looking pretty good by comparison, not having just added the editor-in-chief of the Atlantic to “bomb yemen chat (secret).” It has been a rough month. Two of Hegseth’s advisors—that is to say, the guys he brought in, not disgruntled career bureaucrats groaning under the yoke of the Trumpian occupation—were perp-marched out of the Pentagon on ill-defined leaking accusations, of which the department’s inspector general cleared them not soon after. Hegseth went on the tube to trash his guys in an appearance so weird that even Brian Kilmeade’s simian brow furrowed in puzzlement. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Hegseth’s chief of staff, who had emerged from the fog of war as the prime mover behind the purge, was shuffled off the scene shortly after, but definitely not for allegedly being a drug-addled maniac—do not put in the paper that he is allegedly a drug-addled maniac. Stories about the secretary himself playing fast and loose with department information have continued at a steady drip.

Hegseth has, if not quite yet the goodbye look, at least an expiration date. And, unlike the NSC, DoD is too big to host another Rubio residency. So the natural question is who’s on next. Arkansas’s Sen. Tom Cotton is in the mix; while Cotton seems competent and has a good grasp on the military–industrial base challenges facing the armed forces, his appointment would be a pivot toward a much more hawkish department, which wouldn’t clearly fit with the White House’s priorities. (DoD’s persistent refusal to cooperate with Trump’s more irenic approach to the Middle East in particular was a thorn in the side of the first administration.) Elbridge Colby, currently the undersecretary of defense for policy, is a more attractive option on this axis; his 2018 national defense strategy was the canonical blueprint for Trump’s defense policy, and he is already hard at work on the 2025 update. And, even as Hegseth’s staff has been enveloped in chaos, Colby’s office has been quiet, without a whisper of organizational zaniness making its way into the press. (And, not insignificantly for the most media-savvy president of the modern era, Colby looks good on the TV.) The combination of competence, continuity, and ideological alignment will be hard to reject.

The second Trump term started with a promise of machine-like efficiency and precision. Despite the industrial pace of executive actions, this promise has lost a bit of its luster on the personnel side—although one must not lose sight of how much better it has been than during Trump I. Balancing ideological alignment and operational competence is the whole trick of statesmanship, and it’s not easy, as the first term illustrated in spades. Waltz struck out on both at the NSC; Hegseth seems well on his way to flaming out on the latter without ideology entering into it much at all. The White House still has good options on the bench; if it’s careful, there are still the means and time to pull the brake lever on the carousel. If it’s not, expect to be hearing “Camptown Races” and “My Darling Clementine” tooting over the carnival for a while.

BOOM: Brazilian Congress Approves Motion Expected To Annul Charges and Suspend Sham Prosecution of Bolsonaro and 32 Others Accused of ‘Coup D’état’ by Rogue Supreme Court (VIDEOS)

Bolsonaro may be about to join the presidential race once again.

A mere three days after he was discharged rom the hospital after a VERY complex surgery because of complications from the knife stabbing he suffered in 2018, Jair Bolsonaro is leading tens of thousands of citizens in a demonstration pro-Amnesty for those falsely accused of a ‘coup d’état’.

Socialist President Lula da Silva is in Moscow for the Victory Day Celebration – but even if he was in the country, unpopular Lula could never assemble a crowd like that.

And Bolsonaro may be about to rejoin the presidential race for next year’s election, attempting a historical comeback Donald J. Trump-style.

Some outlets are reporting that the Federal Chamber of Deputies has suspended criminal proceedings in the Supreme Court against Former President Jair Bolsonaro, Former ABIN Director Ramagem and 32 others – including Army Generals – accused of attempted coup.

The vote was approved with a vast majority of the votes.

Watch: 315 Votes in Favor, 143 Votes against.

O Globo reported (translated from the Portuguese):

“The Chamber of Deputies approved on Wednesday the suspension of the action in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that has as defendants Deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ), former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven other people for attempted coup. The decision has already been promulgated by the House, and the resolution will be forwarded to the Court. There were 315 votes in favor and 143 against.”

If he regains his political rights, Bolsonaro will be unbeatable in next year’s presidential election.

The motion provides for the blocking of the entire process, which, in addition to benefiting former Spy chief Ramagem, opens a loophole to also benefit Bolsonaro.

The rogue Supreme Court, however, already stated that the extension to other defendants is unconstitutional.

Radical Anti-Israel Students at Temple University Admit Real Goal is Destruction of the United States and Capitalism (VIDEO)

One of the most underreported aspects of the anti-Israel protests on college campuses, is that these students may constantly talk about their hatred of Israel, but they hate the United States of America just as much, if not more.

At Temple University in Philadelphia, members of the radical group Students for Justice in Palestine, were recently on a group chat where they admitted that one of their main goals is the destruction of America and capitalism.

These student groups have been allowed to go way too far in their actions and now they think that they are untouchable. How else can one explain their brazen attitude, saying things like this right out in the open?

MEMRI, the Middle East Media Research Institute reported:

During an April 24, 2025 webinar celebrating the 71st birthday of Mumia Abu-Jamal, who is serving a prison sentence for the 1981 killing of a police officer, Rishi Arun, President of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) in Temple University, Philadelphia said: “It is our job to destroy imperialism, to destroy the United States […] by organizing in a way that actively undermines and destabilizes the legitimacy and power of the state.” Arun was one of the leading organizers of the Pennsylvania State student encampment in 2024. The event was titled “Twisted Laws: Mumia, Universities & Palestine.”

Mohammed Khatib, the Europe coordinator of the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, a U.S- and Canada-Designated terror organization, spoke about the connections between student activism, Palestinian prisoners, and armed struggle. He added: “If Palestine is liberated, this means this is a nail to dismantle the United States of America.”

The webinar was shared on Samidoun’s website, and opened with a live audio call from Mumia Abu-Jamal himself, who praised the pro-Palestine movement as the most important freedom movement in modern America.

Temple University was founded by Baptists in the late 1800s. Do you think this is what they had in mind back then?
