President Trump Recommends 50% Tariffs on All European Union Countries While Offering Praise and Advise to the UK

This morning, President Trump took to Truth Social to make a recommendation regarding tariffs levied on the European Union.  This would mark a significant increase from proposed tariffs, which include a 10% baseline tariff with 20% reciprocal tariffs, that were set on April 10th but later delayed for all tariffs (except China) until July 9th.  President Trump also proposed a 200% tariff on alcohol products, including wine and champagne.

President Trump stated that the European Union was formed “for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE” and “has been very difficult to deal with.”

The post states:

The European Union, which was formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE, has been very difficult to deal with. Their powerful Trade Barriers, Vat Taxes, ridiculous Corporate Penalties, Non-Monetary Trade Barriers, Monetary Manipulations, unfair and unjustified lawsuits against Americans Companies, and more, have led to a Trade Deficit with the U.S. of more than $250,000,000 a year, a number which is totally unacceptable. Our discussions with them are going nowhere! Therefore, I am recommending a straight 50% Tariff on the European Union, starting on June 1, 2025. There is no Tariff if the product is built or manufactured in the United States. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

The Value Added Tax is a barrier to the importation of US goods in the EU and often ranges from 15-25%.  The VAT is paid by the importer, so there is no cost inflicted on U.S. companies, however, it significantly hampers the competitiveness of foreign goods in the EU marketplace.

For example, the EU imported approximately 116,000 U.S. cars in 2022, according to the BBC.  This is almost half as many U.S. cars imported in 2018 when that number was around 267,000, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Meanwhile, the U.S. imported 1,155,000 cars from the EU in 2018 and 692,000 in 2022, despite the EU having approximately 100 million more people than the U.S.

Just hours before the proposal to increase tariffs on the EU, President Trump offered praise to the United Kingdom, saying “our negotiated deal…is working out well for all,” while also recommending the UK incentivize drilling in the North Sea in order to offset energy costs.

This morning, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told FOX News that both he and President Trump believe “the EU proposals have not been of the same quality that we’ve seen from our other important trading partners.”

Bessent said that he hopes this proposal “lights a fire under the EU” to negotiate, noting that they have a “collective action problem” in that they’re 27 countries represented by just one group in Brussels and that “the underlying countries don’t even know what the EU is negotiating on their behalf.”

NEW: Comer Identifies Five Staffers Involved in Cover-Up of Biden’s Mental Decline and Autopen Scandal… Subpoenas Incoming

House Oversight Chairman James Comer has identified five Biden aides who were involved in the cover-up of Joe Biden’s mental decline and autopen scandal.

Comer has demanded testimony from former Dr. Kevin O’Connor and four former aides related to the Biden health scandal.

Chairman Comer had demanded testimony from: Biden White House physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Director of Domestic Policy Council Neera Tanden, Former Assistant to the President and Senior Advisor to First Lady Jill Biden Anthony Bernal, Former Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff Annie Tomasini, Former Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of Oval Office Operations Ashley Williams.

“The cover-up of President Biden’s obvious mental decline is a historic scandal. The American people deserve to know when this decline began, how far it progressed, and who was making critical decisions on his behalf. Key executive actions signed by autopen, such as sweeping pardons for the Biden Crime Family, must be examined considering President Biden’s diminished capacity. Today, we are calling on President Biden’s physician and former White House advisors to participate in transcribed interviews so we can begin to uncover the truth. In the last Congress, the Biden White House blocked these individuals from providing testimony to the Oversight Committee as part of the effort to cover-up Biden’s declining health. Any continued obstruction will be met with swift and decisive action. The American people demand transparency and accountability now,” said Chairman Comer.

Comer told Fox News host Jesse Watters that subpoenas are coming.

WATCH:

Who were the autopen gatekeepers?

DOJ Pardon Attorney Ed Martin discussed Biden’s growing autopen scandal this week with journalist Mark Halperin on the “2WAY Tonight” podcast.

Although Ed Martin couldn’t name names, he said the senior Democrat whistleblower worked as a high level advisor in Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign.

The three gatekeepers who were allegedly selling access to the autopen were Biden’s Chief of Staff Ron Klain, Mao lover and senior White House Advisor Anita Dunn and Biden attorney Bob Bauer.

Ed Martin said former Biden counsel Steve Ricchetti and Jill Biden were also lead ‘characters’ in the Biden White House.

WATCH:

The Oversight Project recently released analysis of Joe Biden’s pardons for family members, Dr. Tony Fauci, General Milley, J6 Committee members and Gerald Lundergan.

Joe Biden also issued a blanket pardon for his son, Hunter Biden after promising not to intervene in the Justice Department’s prosecution of tax and gun crimes.

On January 19, 2025, just one day before Trump was set to be sworn in as the 47th US President, Joe Biden issued a flurry of pardons to his family members, Fauci and others.

The Oversight Project determined that all of the pardons issued on January 19 had the same exact Biden autopen signature.

The Oversight Project also has gathered every document they could find with Biden’s signature – ALL used the same autopen signature except for the announcement that he was dropping out of the 2024 election.

Operation Rescue: Saving the Military from Radical DEI/Vaccine Ideologies

Image: Wikimedia Commons (DoD photo by U.S. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Alexander Kubitza)

As the U.S. military moves away from divisiveness in pursuit of unity and the tyranny of forced COVID-19 shots, many are more than willing to help Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth continue to achieve his goals.

The Gateway Pundit spoke to Michael Rose, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Stand Together Against Racism and Radicalism in the Services (STARRS). The attorney is currently investigating 118 cases that fall into one of two unique categories.

“Each of these cases either involves those being punished as a result of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) ideology, or for refusing to take the COVID-19 or anthrax vaccine,” he explained.

The cases in Rose’s possession are “only the tip of the iceberg.” He hopes others who have been subjected to adverse Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) or administrative action for one of the above reasons will take the time to reach out to the organization by filling out a short online survey.

Rose provided two examples attributed to the presence of DEI ideology in the military. Considered an “outstanding Office of Special Investigations (OSI) agent who had received awards for performing his job well,” he said an Air Force captain was removed from command after participating as a member of a promotion board.

“He objected to a black person being promoted over a white person,” Rose explained. But here’s the truth of the matter: The junior officer’s decision had absolutely nothing to do with race. He believed “the white person had clearly superior qualifications,” the STARRS attorney shared.

Basing his decision on the merit of the individual rather than his skin color has left the junior officer being identified as “anti-DEI” and accused of “creating a toxic environment.” He subsequently filed a complaint to the Inspector General, an Article 138 complaint and a congressional complaint. Now, Rose pointed out, “the military is trying to discharge him.”

Sadly, these complaints may do little to reconcile his situation. “While federal law allows any member of the military to file a complaint for abuse against their commander,” Rose said, “the military typically winds up discharging the people who file Article 138 complaints, then they turn around and dismiss the complaints, saying they’re moot because the service members are no longer in the military.”

In a second example, Rose said, an individual attending the Coast Guard Officer Candidate School (OCS) in New London, Connecticut, has been removed from the program and discharged from the Coast Guard for allegedly making inappropriate statements, including using the “N-word.”

After investigating the matter—which the candidate adamantly denies—Rose and a team of colleagues determined the accusations were not true. Two retired General officers and two retired Coast Guard Admirals said they believed the officer candidate and support his becoming a Coast Guard officer.

According to the attorney, “He was doing fine in the program until someone decided they didn’t like the fact that he’s conservative.”

For him, the offensive, false accusation had little to do with anything but removing a good candidate from the program. He questions the due process for the accused, advocating for a full impartial investigation.

To provide an example of a service member being punished for refusing to take the COVID-19 shot, Rose shared the story of a former candidate of the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program at Georgia Tech University. “After two years in the program, he lost his ROTC scholarship because he wouldn’t take the COVID vaccine due to his religious objections and had to borrow $70,000 to finish his degree in business finance.” Interestingly, the Navy also sent him a demand to repay $35,000 for his first two years in the program.

The Navy’s demand and the language coming out of Department of Defense are contradictory in Rose’s opinion. On the one hand, President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are calling for service members to return to service as a result of determining the shot mandate was “unlawful as implemented.” But on the other hand, this officer candidate is claimed to owe tens of thousands of dollars to the Navy for his objection to the shot.

“He’s in limbo,” the STARRS’ attorney pointed out. “Because he was in ROTC, and not active duty, there’s no mechanism to get relief except to go through a lengthy process with the Board for Correction of Naval Records.” What does the Department of Defense have to offer for ROTC candidates booted over the now-rescinded, unlawful shot mandate?

For Rose, it’s past time to “cut through the bureaucracy” and develop remedies for these kinds of situations. These wrongs must be made right, and there must be accountability.

Working as a Team to Restore the Military

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared a memorandum throughout the Department of Defense (DoD) on January 29, establishing that “the most qualified individuals are placed in positions of responsibility in accordance with merit-based, color-blind policies.” In the memo, he announced the creation of the “Restoring America’s Fighting Force Task Force” to rout out policies that favored sex, race, or ethnicity over lethality and readiness. According to the memo, “The Task Force will provide an initial report to the [Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness] of actions taken by DoD to terminate DEI initiatives by March 1, 2025, and a final report no later than June 1, 2025.”

On May 22, a DoD news release quotes Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, or USD (P&R), Tom Dill as saying “USD (P&R) would stand down the RAFF task force [following the final report] with the status of mission complete.”

Given this announcement, Lt. Gen. Rod Bishop (Ret.), STARRS Chaiman of the Board, recommends following this task force with “Project Sentinel”—a combined effort of DoD and veterans which would work together to ensure that “this DEI monster that has caused so much divisiveness across our military never raises its head again.”

He continued, expressing to TGP that “as all of us who have studied Marxism understand, this indoctrination, this march through our institutions, has been ongoing for decades. The ideology will not die so easily. It will just mutate in some form or fashion so we need to be continually vigilant.”

Bishop admitted, “The orders have been outstanding and the Restore America Fighting Force Task Force has led a valiant effort to ensure the directives are being carried out across the Services.”

But here is where STARRS and other partnering organizations can assist: “We are more than willing to help the Defense Secretary ensure DEI is truly eradicated with little chance of reemerging in another administration.” One focus area could be the establishment of a “Duty, Honor Country Commission” which would perform a “deep dive” into how the service academies may have drifted over the years away from what should be their foundation.

For example, he asserted, all academies should be emphasizing the Constitution, the history of their services, the importance of integrity, and the Oath of Office in their course of instruction.  “Warning signs tell us challenges here abound, [and] a serious review of the academies has not been conducted in decades and their Boards of Visitors which should have been providing oversight have been handicapped with politically-driven reviews and other political interference,” according to him.

Additionally, referring to the examples shared by Rose, Bishop argued that there must be easier, more efficient, mechanisms for individuals to restore their records and their military status if they have been negatively impacted in any way—especially as they relate to DEI and the COVID-19 shot mandate. To address these shortfalls, STARRS has assembled a team of civilian and retired military lawyers and judges who are ready and willing to work on behalf of those who have been harmed. “Restoring the careers of worthy patriots to prevent irreparable damage should be a top priority,” said Bishop. “We call it Operation Rescue.”

Thirdly, he suggested a review of basic training, ROTC programs, other service schools, and especially our war colleges. “We need to ensure our instructors and instruction emphasize the warrior ethos, accountability, lethality, and the importance of readiness—no more distractions on social justice issues,” Bishop offered.

This focus is “essential to provide a bright future for America’s fighting forces and ensure they can accomplish their mission—to win our nation’s wars if deterrence fails. Not just today but for years into the future,” he shared, adding, “We have a number of PhDs with extensive military experience working on this initiative.”

And finally, to restore trust after years of distrust associated with the military’s anthrax and COVID-19 vaccine mandate policies, Bishop recommended DoD and/or Congress create a Commission on Military COVID-19 and Anthrax Policies (COMCAP).

This Commission would consider appropriate remedies for those who suffered under the vaccine mandate policies and most importantly it would take steps to ensure illegal vaccine activities of DoD will not be repeated for a third time. It would also ensure that physical injuries that can be attributed to the vaccine itself are covered under the Toxic Exposure Risk Activity (TERA) provision of the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics (PACT) Act. This would ensure service members physically harmed by the vaccine receive lifetime care through the VA.

SecDef Hegseth can use resources like STARRS and other partnering veteran organizations to assist in ensuring America’s fighting force is truly restored and remains that way.

Chicago City Hall… ‘Whites Need Not Apply’ (VIDEO)

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson now faces a federal investigation. He continues to make headlines for not for reducing crime or revitalizing the city, all the while building an administration where race seems to matter more than results. His unapologetic push to stack his leadership team with only Black voices has raised serious questions: What happened to equal opportunity? What about qualifications?

Ready for a bold comparison, one many are afraid to make. Post-apartheid South Africa’s decades of so-called “corrective policies” have led to systemic anti-white exclusion, economic decline, and—at its worst, brutal attacks on white farmers that amounts to ethnically motivated violence.

Is Chicago tiptoeing toward a similar path—where racial equity becomes racial revenge?

We examine the dangerous precedent being set when identity politics rule city hall, and how history shows us where that road can lead. It’s time to ask: Are we building a fairer future—or repeating the mistakes of nations who let justice become justification for division?

Hillary Clinton Calls on Liberals to Ruin Memorial Day Gatherings by Bashing Trump to “Friends, Neighbors, Cookout Attendees”

“Boy, this burger is great, Roy! What’s your secret?”

“Tom, don’t you know Hillary Clinton says Trump’s new budget is going to increase food insecurity?”

“*&%$ it Roy! I just wanted to enjoy Memorial Day with friends. Shove your burger! C’mon Betty, we’re leaving!”

“Hey, you! Trump blah blah blah! Put that on your burger, you deplorable, you!”

Rather than honoring the military men and women who gave their lives defending their fellow Americans’ right to live in freedom, two-time failed Democratic Party presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is calling on her supporters to bash President Donald Trump and his One Big Beautiful Bill that passed the House this week when they get together with friends and neighbors at Memorial Day gatherings this weekend:

I’m giving you a mission for this Memorial Day holiday weekend.

I want you to talk to two people—friends, neighbors, cookout attendees—about why Trump’s proposed budget would be a disaster for American kids.

We owe the next generation every chance, and this isn’t it.

How the Trump budget bill would impact kids. (It would be a disaster.)

* Drastically cut health care. 15 million Americans, including millions of children, could lose access through Medicaid cuts and ACA marketplace changes.
* Increase food insecurity. Nearly 11 million people—including 4 million kids—could lose SNAP food assistance.
* Make families poorer. The bill would kick 4.5 million American kids off the child tax credit.
* Leave AI dangers unchecked. The bill would freeze state-level AI regulation for 10 years, stripping states of the ability to protect kids from deep fakes, exploitation, and more.

I’m giving you a mission for this Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Judge Blocks Trump’s Ban on International Students Attending Harvard

A federal judge on Friday issued a temporary restraining order blocking implementation of a White House order to bar current and future international students from attending Harvard University. Around a quarter of Harvard’s students hail from foreign nations.

The Department of Homeland Security had announced the ban on Thursday, and on Friday morning Harvard sued the Trump administration to stop the move. The Boston judge, Allison D. Burroughs, agreed with Harvard that implementation would cause the university “immediate and irreparable injury.”

The White House says that Harvard has failed to clamp down on campus antisemitism. The university, in the lawsuit, said that it was working to comply with a list of demands sent in April by the administration’s Joint Task Force to Combat Antisemitism.

White House spokeswoman Abigail Johnson, responding to the legal challenge, said in a statement that “Harvard should spend their time and resources on creating a safe campus environment instead of filing frivolous lawsuits.”

Trump’s second term has been a challenging time for American universities. Congress is considering a tax on university endowments as part of a GOP-backed spending bill. If enacted, the tax would cost Harvard hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

President Trump Signs Executive Orders on Nuclear Energy Production

President Donald Trump/Image: Video screenshot/White House

Nuclear energy stocks rallied on Friday before President Trump signed several executive orders on Friday to ramp up domestic nuclear energy production.

Trump reportedly plans to invoke the Defense Production Act, which he previously used in March to expand domestic mineral production, to declare a national emergency to reduce dependence on Russia and China for nuclear energy materials.

Per CNBC:

Advanced reactor companies Oklo and NuScale jumped more than 25% and 18%, respectively. Constellation Energy, the largest nuclear operator in the U.S., was up more than 1%. Cameco Corp., one of the biggest uranium miners in the world, rose about 8%.

Trump could sign the orders as early as Friday, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The president is scheduled to sign orders in the Oval Office at 1 p.m. ET, according to the White House schedule.

Trump will invoke the Defense Production Act to declare a national emergency due to U.S. dependence on Russia and China for enriched uranium, nuclear fuel processing and inputs for advance reactors, according to a draft summary viewed by Reuters.

The president is also expected to direct federal agencies to permit and site new nuclear facilities, according to Reuters. He will also order the Departments of Energy and Defense to identify federal land and facilities where nuclear can be deployed and streamline the process to build them, Reuters reported.

President Trump signed four executive orders on nuclear energy production aimed at reforming the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and cutting regulations, reinvigorating and accelerating domestic production, deploying advanced nuclear reactor technologies for national security, and streamlining nuclear reactor testing.

The President previously declared a National Energy Emergency to lift restrictions on domestic fossil fuel mining and drilling.

Additionally, as part of his Unleashing American Energy Executive Order on January 20, the President charged heads of executive agencies to review all existing regulations and “identify those agency actions that impose an undue burden on the identification, development, or use of domestic energy resources — with particular attention to oil, natural gas, coal, hydropower, biofuels, critical mineral, and nuclear energy resources.”

Last month, the Department of Energy touted the “big wins” for nuclear energy in Trump’s first 100 days.

“The long-awaited nuclear renaissance is right around the corner thanks to President Trump as the Administration works to restore American energy dominance to bring more reliable, secure, and affordable power back to U.S. taxpayers,” the department wrote.

“There’s lots more to come,” they concluded.

BREAKING: Obama Judge BLOCKS Trump Administration from Stripping Harvard’s Ability to Enroll Foreign Students

Judge Allison Dale Burroughs Credit: US Senate Committee on the Judiciary

An Obama judge has spat in the face of the rule of law to do the bidding of one of the most infamous colleges in America.

As Reuters reported, A U.S. District Court judge in Boston on Friday barred the Trump administration from revoking Harvard University’s ability to take in foreign students via a temporary restraining order.

The judge in question, Allison Dale Burroughs, was nominated by former President Barack Obama.

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem moved to kick out thousands of foreign students enrolled at Harvard University by terminating Harvard’s international student program.

She explained this was the administration’s way of holding the Ivy League school accountable for its violent, Anti-Semitic, and pro-China activities.

“This administration is holding Harvard accountable for fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus,” Noem wrote on X. “It is a privilege, not a right, for universities to enroll foreign students and benefit from their higher tuition payments to help pad their multibillion-dollar endowments.”

“Harvard had plenty of opportunity to do the right thing. It refused,” she added. “They have lost their Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification as a result of their failure to adhere to the law.”

The Trump administration’s salvo against Harvard came after freezing more than $2.7 billion in multi-year research grants and $60 million in contracts for the school last month. This move was made after months of Harvard coddling violence against Jewish students on campus.

Harvard filed a complaint roughly two hours before Burroughs’s ruling on Friday, calling the Trump administration’s move to prevent them from enrolling foreigners a “blatant violation” of the U.S. Constitution and other federal laws.

The school also alleged that the decision had an “immediate and devastating effect” on the university and more than 7,000 visa holders. Roughly a quarter of Harvard’s student body is made up of foreign nationals.

The Trump administration has not yet said> whether it will appeal Burrough’s outrageous ruling, according to Reuters.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

Kim Jong Un Humiliated as New North Korea Destroyer Fails to Launch, Capsizes in Front of Him

North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un was humiliated this week when a new destroyer failed to launch and capsized in front him.

Radio Free Asia reported North Korea did not try to conceal the failure (most likely as the world was watching from above). The report also mentioned a successful launch of a similar destroyer last month, reportedly North Korea’s first (and now only) destroyer:

…State-run Korean Central Television, or KCTV, reported Thursday that the vessel lost stability during its launch at the shipyard in the northeastern port city of Chongjin, tipping into the water as the stern-side launch sled detached prematurely.

The ship had taken on water and suffered hull damage due to poor handling and “incompetent command,” the report said.

Kim Jong Un, who was at the launch, condemned Wednesday’s mishap in unusually strong language. He called it a “grave and unacceptable accident” caused by “carelessness, irresponsibility, and unscientific empiricism,” and described it as a “serious criminal act,” the state-run news agency reported.

He ordered the destroyer to be fully restored before the June plenary session of the ruling Workers’ Party, stressing that the matter is not merely technical but one of political urgency and national dignity.

…South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that U.S. and South Korean intelligence had been monitoring the launch preparations. They assessed the side-launch as a failure and noted the destroyer remains tipped over in the water.

“The destroyer is currently lying on its side,” said spokesperson Lee Sung-jun. He added that the ship’s design appears similar to the Choe Hyon Ho, a destroyer which was launched last month using a flotation method at the Nampo Shipyard. Wednesday’s launch was by a less common sideways or lateral method.

The two destroyers are North Korea’s most advanced naval vessels.

The first destroyer is designed to carry weapons systems including nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles, state media reported last month. It was slated to enter active duty early next year and Kim Jong Un has supervised test-firings of missiles from the warship.

The AP reported Kim is looking to arrest those responsible and that North Korea claims the damage to ship is not as bad as originally reported (excerpt):

North Korea is seeking to arrest those responsible for the failed launch of its second naval destroyer, as it denied the warship suffered major damage — a claim quickly met with outside skepticism.

A statement from North Korea on its handling of the botched launch came after leader Kim Jong Un expressed fury over the incident that he said was caused by criminal negligence. The main military committee said Friday that those responsible would be held accountable for their “unpardonable criminal act.”

…North Korea’s state media said Friday the severity of the damage to the 5,000-ton-class destroyer was “not serious” as it canceled an earlier assessment that the bottom of the hull had been left with holes.

It said the hull on the starboard side was scratched and some seawater had flowed into the stern section. It said it needs a total of 10 days to pump out the seawater, set the ship upright and fix the scratches.

Must Watch: Vice President JD Vance’s Gives Powerful, Affirming Speech at the US Naval Academy Class of 2025 Commencement Address- “Our adversaries now know when the United States sets a red line, it will be enforced” (Video)

On Friday, Vice President JD Vance joined the Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to give the commencement address to the young men and women who have committed to protecting our nation.

Vance, a Marine Corps veteran, understands the duty and sacrifice ahead for these graduates and spoke about it in passionate terms and thanked the family who have stood beside these great young men and women during their current journey and for the journey ahead.

Full transcript below.

Transcript:

Well, it is great to be with you here on this incredible day. I got to say, it’s a pretty cool trick where when people say good morning, you guys it back in unison. So let me say good morning to the class at 2025.

‘Good morning, sir.’

I want to say, first of all, thank you all for having me. Thank you, especially to Vice Admiral Davids and Captain Allman for your hospitality. Thank you as well, of course, to Secretary Phalen for that great speech, Admiral Kilby and General Smith for all that you do for our country.

First off, I want to say both for me and from President Trump, congratulations to the class of 2025. I want to say congratulations not just to you all, because you all certainly earned a great honor, but congratulations to the families, the friends, the faculty, plus the other midshipmen and service members who join us on this beautiful morning and share in this incredible incredible day.

Now, it’s always dangerous to give a politician a microphone, but I know that I am one of the very last things standing between you and your commission and your diploma.Out of respect, I just want you to know that this is only going to be a three and a half or four hour speech. I hope you all brought your sunscreen because it’s bright here.

But today is such an incredible day for you. Tonight, you’ll celebrate in the finest tradition of the United States Naval Academy with great food and, of course, maybe a little drink. But I hope that as you celebrate, you remember that this is not just your day, as hard as you have worked for it. This day belongs to parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, brothers, sisters, and so many others.

You, all of you, are the product of an incredible legacy. People who worked hard to give you a good education, food on the table, and a sense of possibility. People who took you to church, to practices, to tutoring sessions, people who prayed for you when you struggled and celebrated with you at moments just like today. Most of you are fortunate enough to have someone here to celebrate with you. Some of you don’t.

But whether they are here with you or not, the very best piece of advice I can give you is to begin your life in the fleet with a spirit of gratitude. Be thankful for all the people gathered here today and those who aren’t, because they made you who you are and they got you to where you are today.

I hope you’ll take from that gratitude a sense of duty. You owe it to the American people, to yourselves, but most of all to the people who sacrifice so hard to get you here. You owe it to them to do the best job you can, and I know that is exactly what you’re going to do.

Now, it’s customary in speeches like this for people like me to offer words of congratulations and maybe a little bit of advice. Of course, I just did exactly that. But you’re not just graduates of some random university about to embark on careers in the private sector, and I’m not just giving another political speech. I’m your Vice President. The minute you walk off this stage with your diploma and your commission, you will be officers in the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps, and that is an incredible thing.

You will be leaders of men and women in our armed forces. So while President Trump and I congratulate you on this incredible achievement, I also thought it would be appropriate to tell you a bit about how the President and I think of your mission in this new and very dangerous era for our country.

Now, last week, the President took a very historic trip to the Middle East, meeting with heads of state in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Most of the headlines focused on the trillions of dollars of new investment the President secured for our country, and that’s, of course, an important thing.

But I actually think the most significant part of that trip is that it signified the end of a decades-long approach in foreign policy that I think was a break from the precedent sat by our founding fathers. We had a long experiment in our foreign policy that traded national defense and the maintenance of our alliances for nation building and meddling in foreign countries’ affairs, even when those foreign countries had very little to do with core American interests.

What we’re seeing from President Trump is a generational shift in policy with profound implications for the job each and every one of you will be asked to do. Now, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, our policymakers assumed that American primacy on the world stage was guaranteed. For a brief time, we were a superpower without any peer, nor did we believe any foreign nation could possibly rise to compete with the United States of America.

Our leaders traded hard power for soft power. We stopped making things, everything from cars to computers to the weapons of war, like the ships that guard our waters and the weapons that you will use in the future. Why do we do that?

Well, too many of us believe that economic integration would naturally lead to peace by making countries like the People’s Republic of China more like the United States. Over time, we were told the world would converge toward a uniform set of bland, secular, universal ideals, regardless of culture or country. Those that didn’t want to converge, well, our policymakers would make it their goal to force them by any means necessary. Instead of devoting our energies to responding to the rise of near-peer competitors like China, our leaders pursued what they assumed would be easy jobs for the world’s preeminent superpower.

How hard could it be to build few democracies in the Middle East? Well, almost impossibly hard, it turns out, and unbelievably costly.

It wasn’t our politicians who bore the consequences of such a profound miscalculation. It was the American people to the tune of trillions of dollars. But more than anyone, it was borne by the people who were in your shoes just a few short years ago, by our service members and their family.

The tens of thousands of warfighters who sacrifice precious time, energy, and in some cases, their very lives in the line of duty, they are the ones who bore the costs of past failure. Our leaders abandon clearly stated strategic goals for lofty, often incoherent abstractions.

This is how, for example, we wound up chasing a $230 million pier in Gaza that worked for a grand total of 20 days while injuring over 60 American service members in the construction and maintenance of that pier. Our government took its eye off the ball of great power competition and preparing to take on a peer adversary. Instead, we devoted ourselves to sprawling amorphous tasks like searching for new terrorists to take out while building up far away regimes. Now, I want to be clear, the Trump administration has reversed course. No more undefined missions, no more open-ended conflicts. We’re returning to a strategy grounded in realism and protecting our core national interests.

Now, this doesn’t mean that we ignore threats, but it means that we approach them with discipline and that when we send you to war, we do it with a very specific set of goals in mind. And consider how this played out in just the last major conflict we engaged in with the Houthies over in the Middle East. We went in with a clear diplomatic goal, not to enmesh our service members in a prolonged conflict with a nonstate actor, but to secure American freedom of navigation by forcing the Houthies to stop attacking American ships.

And that’s exactly what we did.

We pursued that goal through overwhelming force against Houthie military targets. In just the first 100 days of the administration, we were able to reach a ceasefire and a conflict that had been ongoing for nearly two years. That’s how military power should be used, decisively with a clear objective. We ought to be cautious in deciding to throw a punch, but when we throw a punch, we throw a punch hard and we do it decisively, and that’s exactly what we may ask you to do.

Now, that shift in thinking from ideological crusades to a principled foreign policy will help restore the credibility of American deterrence in 2025 and beyond. With the Trump administration, our adversaries now know when the United States sets a red line, it will be enforced. When we engage, we do so with purpose, with superior force, with superior weapons, and with the best people anywhere in the world.

Let me say something about weapons and the future of warfare. It is, of course, a priority of this administration, not just to keep, but to widen the technological edge between the United States military and our adversaries all over the world. In the wake of the Cold War, America enjoyed a mostly unchallenged command of the Commons, airspace, sea, space, and cyberspace. But the era of uncontested US dominance is over.

Today, we face serious threats in China, Russia, and other nations, determined to beat us in every single domain, from spectrum to low Earth orbit to our supply chains and even our communication infrastructure. Technology has lowered the cost of disruption, and so we must be, all of us, not just smarter. We got to make sure that we send our troops to war. We do it with the right tools. We can no longer assume our engagements will come without cost. That’s why the Trump administration is investing in innovation, rewarding risk-takers at the Department of Defense, and streamlining weapons acquisition for the new century.

Investing in cutting-edge weaponry like hypersonics is important, but just as important are the low-cost, high-impact technologies that are already transforming the battlefield, things like drones. By the way, when we talk about innovation, innovation is not just happening in the laboratory of a defense contractor. Innovation increasingly is happening on the very battlefields that you will lead troops on. You are not just recipients of innovation, you’re not just users of tools, you will very often be developing tools in this new century.

Our lawmakers and military brass alike must learn to adjust to a world where cheap drones, readily available cruise missiles, and cyberattacks cause extraordinary damage to our military assets and our service members, and it will be you, the graduates gathered here today, who will lead the way for the rest of us. Your service will bring new challenges and environments, including ones unfamiliar even to those who have served before you. You will deploy new equipment, new systems, and new technology. Through those experiences, it is you who will learn, who will teach others, and will help our services and our entire country adapt to the future we’re confronting.

Now, the extraordinary education you have received is an investment by the American people, an investment not only in your courage, but in the strength of your minds and the promise of your leadership.Because your nation rests easier knowing that we have the most brilliant strategists and tacticians standing guard. Men and women like you, brilliant enough to preempt and, if called, fight and win the Wars of Tomorrow.

And as technological change continues to transform the battlefield, It only heightens the importance for this administration, for our whole country, on investing in our military’s human capital. That’s you and the well-being of our warfighters, in your brilliance, in your strategic innovation. Modernization isn’t just about tactics and tools. It’s about meeting the needs of our service members.

For too long, we asked too much of too few.

Past leaders sent our service members on mission after mission with no exit strategy, no end in sight, and with little articulation for the American people or for the warfighters about what we were doing. When we extend the deployment of an aircraft carrier, that has real impact on people’s lives, and we’re aware of it. They miss their families. Of course, they miss their loved ones and their home life. They accept that sacrifice, and that’s the job that you’ve taken on. But the job that we have taken on is to never misuse that sacrifice or never ask you to do something without a clear mission and a clear path home.

The Trump administration recognizes that our most valuable resources, it’s you. It’s young people who are brave enough to put on the uniform and risk your life for this country. We promise, I promise, to cultivate that resource, to protect it, and to use it only when the national interest demands.

What makes your new life so unique is that you must take multiple perspectives. You will be junior officers, of course, answerable to commanders, captains, admirals, generals, and people like me. You will have to follow orders even when you don’t want to.

If I can offer one piece of advice from a junior enlisted guy to a bunch of new officers to say that when you say with all due respect, that is not a get an out-of-jail free card. I got chewed. These guys are laughing back here. I got chewed out more times than I can remember because I assumed that I could say whatever I wanted to, so long as I said, ‘With all due respect’ before it. That’s not how it works out. You learn that the hard way. But importantly, you are not just following orders. More often than not, you will be giving them.

Just as I see you as our most precious resource, so you must see the men and women who call you sir and ma’am as your most sacred charge.

You will not just be…you will not just be another boss. You will counsel them through triumph and tragedy. You will learn that there is no clear line between personal and professional for officers in the Navy and Marine Corps. But I encourage you to see them not just as people who must follow your orders, but as leaders in their own right with incredible wisdom and incredible potential.

Now, this is shocking to think about, but there are senior enlisted people who started their careers in the Navy or the Marine Corps before you were born who will call you sir and ma’am and follow your orders. Think about what an incredible honor that is, and think about what an incredible opportunity it is not just to lead these men and women, but also to learn from these men and women. And that is the task before you. You will lean on that experience, of course, but still, you’re very often, more often than not, you’re going to be the one in charge.

That is an honor, but it’s a responsibility that ought to give you chills.

You’ve made it now through one of the most demanding institutions in the entire world. You’ve earned your commissions, and you’ve stepped forward to serve at a moment when your country needs you now more than ever.

But you’re stepping into gigantic shoes, and it’s worth taking stock of that as you prepare to receive your commission. Those of us who’ve served know that graduates of the Naval Academy, they have a certain energy, a certain aura, a certain respect when they’re out there in the fleet.

Let me just give you an example. Today is your day, of course, and you should celebrate. But in three days, the President and I will lead the most solemn occasion in our nation, Memorial Day at Arlington Cemetery. You’ll learn, as I have, that when people say things like Happy Memorial Day, you appreciate the sentiment behind it, but you know that it’s wrong, because Memorial Day is not a happy day, and Memorial Day is not for those who served and came home. It is for those who served and didn’t.

Every Memorial Day, I think about a graduate of this institution, Major Megan McClung. She was an officer I served with who was bright, tough, and incredibly dedicated to her job. She arrived in Iraq not long after me and was killed in action not long after that. She loved this institution.

Like so many that came before her, she built on its legacy in the way that she served her country. Now, there are so many stories of great service in this institution. I look at these signs on this stadium, Bella Wood, Midway, Guadalcanal. These are battles I read about in history books or learned about when I was a United States Marine.

If you just try to read a list of the people who served after graduating from this institution, the list is almost so long, you can’t get through it. Senior leaders, Commandants of the Marine Corps, Chiefs of Naval Operations, astronauts, great business leaders, and even a few lowly politicians have graduated from the United States Naval Academy.

Their service is an incredible legacy that they have passed on to you, and you are the bridge that connects the incredible heritage of this institution to the future duties and responsibilities your country needs you to perform. That’s an incredible honor, but it’s also an incredible responsibility, and I hope you take it seriously.

People will look at you as graduates of the Naval Academy in a different way than they look at most of the people that you will meet every single day. They will look at you that way, yes, because you’ve worked hard, and yes, because you deserve this day, but they will also look at you differently because you stand on the shoulders of giants.

And 20, 30, or 40 years from now, there are people who are going to be standing on your shoulders. So please remember that. Please take it seriously and please recognize that you become part of a brotherhood and sisterhood that will enable you to do great things, that will support you as you do them, but will ask you to give back as you should in return.

You are the inheritors of a national tradition dating back 250 years. It began with John Paul Jones and the founders of this country asked the United States Navy to take on the most powerful Navy on Earth, and we won.

Our first patriots knew the stakes. They did not seek out war. They did everything they could to advocate and petition for their own liberties.

But when the time came, they raised a military, they raised a Navy, and they fought like hell.

Their examples lives on in all of you. In their courage, we see the roots of your calling to be strong but not reckless, to seek peace, but never at the expense of liberty, to hold firm to your convictions, even when the cost is high.

Now, I want to say to all of you, I’ve been vice president for all of about 120 days, and this summer, I will celebrate my 41st birthday. But I have never, in those 41 years, been so proud as I am today to honor you, to celebrate you, and to congratulate you on a job well done.

Now, I’m sure some of you share my politics, and some of you don’t. But I know today I speak for a grateful nation when I say, We are rooting for you, Naval Academy, Class of 25. We are proud of you, and we depend on you. Congratulations, Godspeed, and do great work.

During an interview prior to commencement, a Class of 2025 Midshipman shared why Vance’s appearance is such an honor.

A reported asked, “You’ve served on the enlisted side. How does it feel to have an enlisted Marine as vice President speaking today?”

The graduating Firstie shared, “It’s honestly an incredible honor. I mean, former fellow prior enlisted. It’s a reminder that it doesn’t… Being enlisted or where you start off doesn’t define how far you go. That leadership grounded in service is both powerful and very deeply respected.”
