Mike Benz: “Jeffrey Epstein Was Working With the CIA Since 1981”

As the debate rages over the Trump administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case, Foundation for Freedom Online founder Mike Benz took a close look at Epstein’s history with the intel community talking to host Jesse Kelly. Benz has promised a deep dive on the topic soon.

Mike Benz: Epstein was working with the CIA in the early 1980s at the very start of his career after he left Bear Stearns. In 1981, right after leaving Bear Stearns, Jeffrey Epstein created a one-person for-profit company in his one-bedroom New York apartment. It was called the Intercontinental Assets Group, and it held itself out as an international bounty hunter for high-net-worth individuals to both recover money and shield money internationally. Right away in 1981, he starts this company that basically helped royalty and high-net-worth individuals basically recover loan debts or assets owed to them that were held in cryptic offshore bank accounts, as well as helping them structure their own assets in a way that would make it difficult or impossible for others to collect those assets.

And in 1982, just one year into that, he got a fake passport, an Austrian passport, listing his residence as Saudi Arabia. This is a fake passport. This was recovered by the FBI in 2019 when they drilled a hole in Jeffrey Epstein’s safe and recovered this. Prosecutors held this passport up at the Ghislaine Maxwell trial. Now, this fake passport was so good that it was able to go through four different country checkpoints. It had a false name, but Jeffrey Epstein’s photo, so that he could get back and forth. And why Saudi Arabia? Well, because Jeffrey Epstein, one of his main clients for the group that he set up in 1981, was Adnan Khashoggi.

Adnan Khashoggi was the CIA arms runner for the Iran-Contra affair when Congress blocked the U.S. federal government through a congressional law called the Bolan Amendment, with the Democrats controlling the House of Representatives, banning any U.S. funds from being directed to the overthrow of the Nicaraguan Sandinista government. And the Reagan White House and National Security Council and Central Intelligence Agency wanted to do it anyway. They were left with a problem, which was that the CIA had been neutered during the Jimmy Carter years. There had been prohibitions on the categories of covert activity it could do, and the Bolan Amendment from Congress blocked them from using U.S. aid funds or State Department funds to run the operation.

Enter Jeffrey Epstein and Adnan Khashoggi, his client. During the Iran-Contra affair, which dogged the entire Reagan administration when all this came out, the U.S. was selling arms together with Israel to Iran, which is kind of ironic as the current geopolitics of Israel-Iran play out around missiles flying overhead earlier this month between those two countries. Israel and the U.S. were selling weapons to Iran at that time through Adnan Khashoggi, the Saudi arms dealer who had been working with the CIA for 30 years.

In fact, this all came out in formal, under-oath testimony from the Paris office of BCCI, which was the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, one of the largest banks in the world, which was effectively a CIA proprietary bank for running arms to the Mujaheddin when the CIA was creating the Islamo-terrorist network that would later become Al Qaeda and then ISIS. Adnan Khashoggi was a client of that bank, together with the CIA, and the head of the head of the Paris branch said that Adnan Khashoggi personally told him that he was working for the Central Intelligence Agency and Jeffrey Epstein was his money bundler. This is at the height of the Cold War, mind you.

And so you see this relationship going back to the early 1980s. In 1985, Jeffrey Epstein becomes linked up with Les Wexner in Columbus, Ohio. Les Wexner was the head of what at the time was the largest retailer in the entire United States, limited brands, famous for Victoria’s Secret and many, many others. Les Wexner’s tax attorney, Arthur Shapiro, was murdered in a gangland style assassination in 1985, the day before he was set to testify in an IRS grand jury investigation. The IRS had been looking into the Wexner empire’s finances and failure to, I think, file taxes for something like five years and seven years of investigation. Arthur Shapiro, who ran that, was supposed to testify to the IRS grand jury just one day before he was gunned down.

It was right after that that Jeffrey Epstein appears to meet Les Wexner and then go on to have durable power of attorney over the entire Wexner enterprise. In 1993, Jeffrey Epstein personally negotiated the sale, the transfer of Air America, which would then become Southern Air Transport, a CIA proprietary airline straight from Miami, where it got busted as part of the Iran-Contra gun trafficking and narcotics trafficking in order to run this illicit operation in Iran-Contra. That very airline used Jeffrey and that Jeffrey Epstein was a critical part in the structuring of this CIA operation. He then negotiated the transfer of that CIA airliner straight to Columbus, Ohio, where the Wexner empire was based for the primary purpose of transporting the limited cargo between Ohio and Hong Kong, which is another one of these narco states. Hong Kong was won by the British during the opium wars and has been kind of a lawless gun and drug running zone ever since.

How does one get to be the financial bundler for the CIA’s main arms, illicit arms trafficker in the Middle East without having any scrutiny from the Central Intelligence Agency? How does one personally negotiate the transfer of a CIA proprietary airline? By the way, Southern Air Transport declared bankruptcy in Columbus, Ohio, the very day the CIA put out an acknowledgement of Air America’s role in the gun running and narco trafficking in Iran-Contra. Subsequent to that, the US State Department personally made Jeffrey Epstein the tenant on the lease for one of the second largest residents in all of New York City. This residence was seized from the government of Iran as the US was putting sanctions on it and then personally leased out to Jeffrey Epstein. How do you have the State Department as your personal landlord? Do you think you or I, Jesse, could score something like that?

The State Department then ended up in a legal dispute with Jeffrey Epstein because Jeffrey Epstein subleased that apartment to the defense lawyer for the “French Connection” and “Pizza Connection” drug scandals (Ivan Fisher), where you had CIA involvement in narco trafficking that was effectively dealt, you know, hushed over in this trial through this very defense lawyer that Jeffrey Epstein then leased the State Department building seized from Iran from. What I’m trying to communicate here is that every aspect of the Jeffrey Epstein story is part of the restructuring of intelligence work after the scandals of the 1970s when the CIA was barred from doing activity directly. And that’s when USAID came into the picture and took the baton from CIA and these and the NGO apparatus that we’re now living under with the National Endowment for Democracy and Internews and the US Agency for US Institute of Peace and the web of private contractors and private financiers in order to be the front men for CIA operations. Jeffrey Epstein was present at creation of that entire apparatus. There is zero chance on God’s green earth that there are no CIA files on this guy.

And the fact that this justice department has effectively pointed us to the FBI when this is a CIA job is not a good look for transparency.

WATTERS: ‘Why Isn’t Obama Under Investigation’ for Perpetrating Russia Hoax and Surveilling Trump Campaign?’

Barack Obama and his CIA Director John Brennan in the Oval Office (White House)

On Friday, July 11, acclaimed Fox News host Jesse Watters re-stated a fundamental question that common sense Americans have been asking since 2018:

“Barack Obama–why isn’t he under investigation?” Watters said.

“Lovers [and former top Obama FBI Agents] Page and Strzok texted: “POTUS wants to know everything we’re doing.”

“You’re saying [former Obama CIA Director John] Brennan and [former FBI Director James] Comey ran the spy web behind Barack’s back? Right. This goes all the way to the top, and they never had the goods [on President Trump].”

“[Former Director of National Intelligence James] Clapper testified in 2017: ‘I never saw any direct empirical evidence that the Trump campaign was plotting; conspiring with the Russians to meddle with the election,’” Watters said.

Watters offered hope that these bad Deep State actors may still yet face investigation, based on encouraging recent statements and actions from FBI Director Kash Patel.

“The Feds are locked in. Kash gave us a warning months ago: James Comey literally built a Russiagate panic room in the FBI headquarters, and Kash tripped right on to it,” Watters said.

“Now, Trump threats aren’t being ignored anymore. Just ask Comey. He’s got the Secret Service tailing him. It turns out 86-ing Trump with seashells warrants some extra attention.”

“After his Instagram post, the Feds pinpointed Comey’s phone and then used unmarked cars to track him back to Virginia. Those are the rules. You threaten Trump – here comes the heat. No more close calls allowed.”

“Democrats created this culture – death threats, sabotage, and fake dossiers all designed to take out 47 at any cost,” Watters said.

The Gateway Pundit reported that FBI Director Kash Patel’s blistering exposé and film, Government Gangsters, has already unmasked the illegal actions committed by President Obama and his dirty Deep State actors against President Trump.

As The Gateway Pundit reported on Government Gangsters,

“Kash Patel first underscores the methods by which James Comey’s FBI conspired to surveil President Trump’s 2016 campaign. Under President Obama, the FBI illegally obtained a warrant to surveil the Trump campaign, based on false evidence, from a secret, Washington, DC FISA Court.”

“Kash Patel unleashed his personal findings following his historic, nonpartisan investigation into President Trump, while working for the US House Intelligence Committee from 2017-2018. Kash Patel was forced to conclude, even to his own shock, that entrenched government interests had conspired with the Mainstream Media to illegally doctor and contrive the infamous “Russia hoax,” framing President Trump as a Russian agent.”

As of 2025, common sense Americans have now spent nearly a decade awaiting justice for these heinous crimes committed by government leaders against their political opponents and the American people.

Rosie O’Donnell Responds to Trump Saying He’s Considering Stripping Her of US Citizenship

Rosie O’Donnell has responded to President Donald Trump, who called her a “threat to humanity” and said that he is giving “serious consideration” to revoking her U.S. citizenship on Saturday.

O’Donnell, 63, moved to Ireland with her 12-year-old “non-binary” adopted child in January over Trump’s return to the White House.

The latest round of the decades-long feud began last week when the former star went on an unhinged rant on TikTok, blaming Trump and the One Big Beautiful Bill for the deadly Texas floods.

“What a horror story in Texas. The flash floods in Texas—the Guadalupe River. Fifty-one missing, fifty-one dead, more missing. Children. At a camp,” O’Donnell said. “And when the President gets all of the early warning systems and the weather forecasting abilities of the government, these are the results that we’re going to start to see on a daily basis—because he’s put this country in so much danger by his horrible decisions and this ridiculously immoral bill that he just signed into law.”

As the Gateway Pundit reported on Saturday, Trump took to Truth Social to blast O’Donnell, seemingly in response.

“Because of the fact that Rosie O’Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The president continued, “She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

O’Donnell responded in a series of Instagram posts, writing, “the president of the usa has always hated the fact that i see him for who he is – a criminal con man sexual abusing liar out to harm our nation to serve himself – this is why i moved to ireland – he is a dangerous old soulless man with dementia who lacks empathy compassion and basic humanity- i stand in direct opposition all he represents- so do millions of others – u gonna deport all who stand against ur evil tendencies – ur a bad joke who cant form a coherent sentence.”

Ironically, the League of Their Own actress did not complete a single sentence in the rant in which she claimed the president cannot “form a coherent sentence.”

In another post, she shared a photo of Trump with Jeffrey Epstein and wrote:

hey donald –
you’re rattled again?
18 years later and I still live rent-free in that collapsing brain of yours.
you call me a threat to humanity –
but I’m everything you fear:
a loud woman
a queer woman
a mother who tells the truth
an american who got out of the country b4 u set it ablaze
you build walls –
I build a life for my autistic kid in a country where decency still exists
you crave loyalty –
I teach my children to question power
you sell fear on golf courses –
I make art about surviving trauma
you lie, you steal, you degrade –
I nurture, I create, I persist
you are everything that is wrong with america –
and I’m everything you hate about what’s still right with it
you want to revoke my citizenship?
go ahead and try, king joffrey with a tangerine spray tan
i’m not yours to silence
i never was

She also shared posts from liberal accounts supporting her.

O’Donnell was born on Long Island. Natural-born American citizens cannot lose their citizenship for gaining it in another country, so it is unclear how Trump could remove hers.

The New York Post reports:

The feud between O’Donnell and Trump dates back nearly two decades, to when the “A League of Their Own” actress ridiculed “The Apprentice” star on “The View” in 2006.

At the time, O’Donnell chastised Trump for acting like a “moral authority” when controversy broke out over the winner of that year’s Miss USA pageant.

Trump immediately hit back, describing the lefty comedian as “disgusting both inside and out.”

“You take a look at her, she’s a slob. She talks like a truck driver,” Trump told “The Insider” in 2006.

In August 2015, during the Republican primary debate, then-Fox host Megyn Kelly asked Trump about his use of language like “fat pigs,” “dogs,” “slobs” and “disgusting animals” to describe women.

“Only Rosie O’Donnell,” he retorted.

VICTORY! DOJ Drops Charges Against Hero Doctor Who Helped Patients Evade Vaccine Mandates

Dr. Kirk Moore

The Department of Justice has announced it is dropping charges against Utah plastic surgeon Dr. Kirk Moore for helping his patients avoid taking the dodgy COVID vaccines.

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the decision in a post on the X platform.

“At my direction @TheJusticeDept has dismissed charges against Dr. Kirk Moore,” Bondi wrote.

”Dr. Moore gave his patients a choice when the federal government refused to do so.

“He did not deserve the years in prison he was facing. It ends today.”

This decision follows recent reporting by The Gateway Pundit about Dr. Moore and how he was facing 35 years in federal prison for his supposed crimes.

Among his various “crimes” included destroyeing thousands of vials of mRNA COVID vaccines, providing his patients with fake vaccination cards and injecting saline into children whose parents wanted them to believe they got vaccinated without risking potential side effects.

Trump Admin Is Prosecuting One of the Few Doctors Who Honored his Hippocratic Oath to ‘Do No Harm’ during Covid Madness

Moore was first arrested back in 2023 by the Biden regime, who consequently charged him with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to convert, sell, convey, and dispose of government property, conversion sale, conveyance and disposal of government property and aiding and abetting.

Credit must also go to Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who wrote a letter to the DOJ requesting that they drop charges against Moore, who she described as a “hero.”

“The Covid vaccine kills and injures people, but this brave doctor, who is a veteran by the way, is being prosecuted for helping people avoid tyrannical vaccine mandates under Democrats,” she wrote.

“Big Pharma was given billions of taxpayer’s dollars for experimental covid vaccines and then the MrNA covid vaccines were forced on Americans, our military, and our children against their will.”

“Covid vaccines do not stop the spread of covid and are proven to cause life threatening myocarditis, miscarriages, strokes, blood clots, and many other issues that many Americans are angrily still dealing with today.”

Despite His Change in Tone, Trump Still Sees Putin as a Negotiating Partner and Zelensky as the Main Obstacle to a Peace Deal: REPORT

AI-generated image by Grok: Trump and the warring foes Putin and Zelensky.

Three and a half years after the start of the war, Russian forces have an edge over the defending Ukrainians in almost every aspect.

And Moscow is pushing the envelope with ever-bigger drone and missile attacks targeting military infrastructure all over Ukraine, including in the western regions in the deep rear.

At the same time, Russian forces are exerting pressure all over the frontline: against Sumy, Kharkov, Donetsk, Zaporozhie and Kherson.

Kiev is under constant attack of Russian drones and missiles.

Out-manned, out-gunned and out-maneuvered, the Kiev regime defenders in many places are hanging by a thread – and the overextended reserve troops have to run ‘to and fro’ to gap holes in the defense lines.

In the peace process front, the positions of Russians and Ukrainians were incompatible, and negotiations have stalled.

As the great sponsor of peace, US President Donald J. Trump is understandably dissatisfied with the ongoing conflict, and his comments increasingly highlight ‘his frustration’ with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Financial Times reported:

“Over the past week, Trump has said he will be providing additional weapons, including Patriot air defense systems, to Ukraine; signaled his willingness to embrace much tougher sanctions against Moscow; and blasted the Russian president. He also vowed to issue a ‘major statement’ on the war in Ukraine this coming Monday, without elaborating.”

Watch: ‘A lot of bullshit’ – Trump on his frustration with Putin.

“We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth. He’s very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless.”

This is a change in tone from months ago, when most of his criticism was reserved for Zelensky.

But many see that this does not represent a deep shift in favor of the Kiev regime.

“’This is a shot across Russia and Putin’s bow that he’s sick of being strung along’, said Max Bergmann of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think-tank. ‘But it doesn’t actually mean that the US is going to shift to being suddenly a big ally and backer of Ukraine, or more significantly than it has been’.”

Zelensky seems convinced that things are looking up for him, saying that he received ‘good political signals at the highest level’.

Trump still sees Zelensky as the biggest obstacle for peace, FT reports.

“But while Trump’s rhetoric has raised some hopes in Europe of a potential shift in his attitude, two senior officials involved in defense and security negotiations with Washington said there was still little tangible evidence of the White House taking a more pro-Kiev stance.

Western allies of Ukraine were still assuming Trump was predisposed to seeing Putin as his main negotiating partner in any settlement and Zelensky as the primary obstacle to a workable peace deal, the officials said.”

WATCH: 62-Year-Old Woman Charged for Driving Through Anti-ICE Protesters Who Were Surrounding and Pounding on Her Car in New Jersey

A 62-year-old woman has been charged after driving through a crowd of anti-ICE protesters who surrounded and began pounding on her car in New Jersey.

Linda Roglen, 62, of North Bergen, was driving past the Noches De Colombia on Fairview Avenue in the borough of Fairview when she encountered a group protesting ICE raids on Saturday.

One of the protesters confronted her car, and she sped up, allegedly running over his foot.

The man falls to the ground, Roglen stops, and the protesters swarm her vehicle and begin banging on the windows.

At this point, the car is surrounded, and Roglen slowly drives through. At least one protester can be seen throwing something at her vehicle as she leaves the scene.

The incident was captured on video from multiple angles and shared on social media, where leftists expressed outrage over her actions.

Those with common sense asserted that she did the right thing as she was in the middle of a dangerous situation.

According to a report from the New York Post, Roglen has been charged with “careless driving, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and four counts of assault by auto resulting in bodily injury.”

Three of the protesters sustained minor injuries.

In New Jersey, no statute or law specifically immunizes or protects drivers from civil or criminal liability if they drive through a group of protesters who are surrounding and banging on their vehicle.

Several states, such as Florida, Oklahoma, and Iowa, have enacted or considered laws that provide limited protections for drivers in specific scenarios involving blocked roadways. New Jersey has not passed any similar legislation.

New Jersey does not have a “stand your ground” law; instead, there is a general duty to retreat if it can be done safely before using force. However, self-defense may apply if you reasonably believe force is immediately necessary to protect against unlawful force or retreating is not possible.

MUST WATCH: Tom Homan BRUTALLY Roasts Anti-ICE Heckler During TPUSA Speech — ‘I Guarantee You This Guy Sits Down to Pee’

Trump administration border czar Tom Homan had a message for anti-ICE protesters and hecklers during his speech at Turning Point USA’s Student Action Summit Saturday night: “You want some? Come get some.”

Homan’s speech was interrupted by hecklers, but it just made his remarks even more fiery.

The immigration enforcer began by telling the crowd, “Sometimes, I’m harsh. But if I offend anybody here tonight, I don’t give a sh-t.”

“Tom Homan is going to run the biggest deportation operation this country has ever seen. Take it to the bank,” the border czar said.

Responding to the anti-ICE protesters, including the ones who were at the speech and outside, Homan said, “You want some? Come get some.”

“I’m tired of it,” Homan asserted. “For the men and women of ICE, I deserve your respect. They’re the finest 1% this country has. And Tom Homan isn’t going anywhere. Tom Homan isn’t shutting up.”

After a heckler bizarrely asked Homan if he was a member of MS-13 about five minutes into his speech, Homan replied, “This guy wouldn’t know what it’s like to serve this nation. This guy ain’t got the balls to be an ICE officer. He hasn’t got the balls to be a border patrol agent.”

Homan drew massive cheers from the audience, who also chanted “U-S-A! U-S-A!”

As the heckler was dragged out of the building, Homan added, “This guy lives in his mother’s basement. The only thing that surprised me is [he] doesn’t have purple hair and a nose ring. Get out of here, you loser.”

Homan told the heckler to meet him outside and declared, “I guarantee you this guy sits down to pee.”

Homan told the audience that ICE will not be intimidated by the protesters or their violent rhetoric and will continue “to do the job that President Trump gave us to do.”

Serenading the Soviets

Serenading the Soviets

A new book takes on the brilliance and danger of the Soviet world of classical music.

Portrait Of Solomon Mikhoels (1890-1948) In Usa
(Fine Art Images/Heritage Images/Getty Images)

The Sound of Utopia: Musicians in the Time of Stalin by Michel Krielaars. Pushkin, 336 pages

Joseph Stalin was not only a bookworm—his personal library contained some 20,000 volumes—but also a music-lover. In the evenings, at his dacha outside Moscow, the Soviet dictator would listen to every new release of a classical recording before scribbling his verdict on the album sleeve: “good,” “average,” or “rubbish.” The last one could lead to a stint in the gulag or a bullet. Indeed, on the eve of his death in March 1953, Stalin, who had ordered the murder of the famous theater director Solomon Mikhoels in January 1948, was preparing a purge of Jews in the Soviet Union that would have swept up numerous cultural luminaries.

In his sardonically titled The Sound of Utopia, Michel Krielaars, a Dutch journalist who lived in Russia from 2007 to 2012, explores the life and fate of musicians during the Stalin era, ranging from the composer Sergei Prokofiev to the pianist Sviatoslov Richter. His portraits are by turns whimsical, idiosyncratic, and poignant. Drawing upon interviews with the children and grandchildren of Soviet musicians and his own wide reading, Krielaars skillfully illuminates the extreme pressures that Russian musicians experienced during Stalin’s capricious rule, when art and politics, more often than not, formed a bloody crossroads.

One option was accommodation. The great composer Sergei Prokofiev embraced it. Born in 1891, he was a wunderkind who began his studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and went on to win acclaim for his first piano concerto, which premiered in 1912. After the Bolsheviks came to power in 1918, Prokofiev, who was something of a dandy, made a beeline for London and Paris, which were teeming with aggrieved Russian exiles who hoped that the Bolshevik regime was a mere interlude.

By the early 1930s, Prokofiev decided to return permanently to the Soviet Union, where he wouldn’t have to compete for public attention with Igor Stravinsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff, both of whom had decided to remain in the West. Krielaars describes him as a “cold, ambitious egotist who did whatever was necessary to ingratiate himself with the communist authorities. In return, he was able to enjoy an extravagant lifestyle and was the darling of the regime—the same regime that had sent his first wife to a labor camp.” When the Central Committee created the Union of Russian Composers and Stalin mandated “socialist realism” as an artistic policy, Prokofiev adapted. Writing in Izvestia, for example, in November 1934, he moved away from modernism, stating that music “must be melodious, but with melody which is simple and comprehensible, without becoming repetitive or trivial.” His superb symphonic suite Lieutenant Kije, which was originally written between 1933 and 1934 as a film score, was written in this spirit.

Prokofiev’s maneuvering did not prevent the regime from banning in 1936 his Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the October Revolution—a massive work featuring orchestra, military band, accordion band, percussion ensemble, two mixed choirs and a recorded speech—on the grounds that it defamed the revolution and Lenin. It was not performed until three decades later.

What made life so treacherous was that during the Stalin era, Prokofiev and others never could be sure when or what would incur the wrath of the Kremlin. In January 1936, Stalin attended a performance of Dmitri Shostakovich’s opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, only to storm out of the performance with his henchmen. A few days later an editorial appeared in Pravda headlined, “Muddle Instead of Music,” accusing Shostakovich of the sin of “formalism” (an all-purpose and meaningless epithet that the Soviet authorities never attempted to define). Shostakovich was never arrested; others were not so fortunate. In 1937 the composer Vsevolod Zaderatsky was arrested and sentenced to six years forced labor in the gulag, where he somehow managed to write the 24 Preludes and Fugues for Piano in a little notebook.

In 1948, the Soviet Central Committee issued a resolution denouncing a variety of composers. A number of celebrated works by Prokofiev were suddenly banned, including his Symphony No. 6 as well as the Piano Sonatas Nos. 6, 7, and 8. “Prokofiev’s demotion in 1948,” Krielaars writes, “had less to do with ideological issues than with the fickleness of policymakers, factions within the bureaucracy and financial crises.” In 1957, four years after his death (he expired on the same day as Stalin), Prokofiev was rehabilitated and awarded the Lenin Prize.

Unlike Prokofiev, Sviatoslov Richter, who was born in 1915, did not grow up in tsarist Russia but experienced the turbulence of the Civil War. He flourished in the hothouse atmosphere of the cosmopolitan seaport Odessa, accompanying violinists, singers, and even a circus as a teenager. He moved to Moscow to study with the legendary teacher and polyglot Heinrich Neuhaus at the Moscow conservatory, who, like Richter, was of German ancestry and was imprisoned for eight months in 1941. That same year Richter’s father, Teofil, was arrested, accused of espionage and shot in August 1941 by Stalin’s NKVD, two months after Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa to invade the Soviet Union, thereby opening up a two-front war that would prove his downfall.

With the death of Stalin, Richter could travel abroad and became a star in the West, renowned for his colossal technique and sensitive interpretations, whether he was playing Bach or Prokofiev (whose music he admired as much as he despised the man himself). The flat in which Richter lived with the singer Nina Dorliak—a purely Platonic relationship, Krielaars reports—has been converted into a memorial museum and concert venue. There Krielaars learned that Richter worshipped Marcel Proust:

“Proust, the gay dandy who shut himself up in his cork-panelled room to devote himself to literature, and whose character Swann kept elitist company but, as a Jew, was the eternal outsider.” Given that being gay was punishable with years in a labor camp, Richter kept his own sexuality a tightly held secret. Krielaars wonders whether the KGB might have tried to blackmail Richter, but provides no evidence that it did.

The pressures on these artists were intense. When the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (who later became the much-beloved conductor of the National Symphony) traveled to Paris in 1974, he encountered his friend David Oistrakh, who had barely escaped being nabbed during Stalin’s Great Terror in 1936. Oistrakh told him, “I admire your purity, your courage, everything you do. But tomorrow you will read a letter to Pravda, signed by me, in which I denounce you. I beg you to find the strength to forgive me.”

Then there was the Polish-born composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg, who fled Warsaw for Minsk after the Nazi invasion. During the Second World War, he served as the chairman of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee and traveled to America to raise funds for the Soviet war effort. That was enough to bring him into bad odor after the war concluded. Starting in 1948, he and his family were under steady surveillance by the secret police, and in 1953 he was incarcerated in Moscow’s notorious Butyrka prison. After he was informed that he was being released from prison, he apparently told the wardens, “I am a Jewish nationalist and must stay here in prison.” Weinberg spent the rest of his life as a recluse.

Krielaars ends by observing that Russia has come full circle under Vladimir Putin. New attacks on “formalism” are circulating. Artists whose patriotism is deemed inadequate are being persecuted. It’s a fresh instance of what the Soviet-era pianist Maria Yudina, invoking Shakespeare, once publicly denounced as “art made tongue-tied by authority.” In excavating the Soviet Union’s mistreatment of its greatest cultural figures, Krielaars shows that the Stalin era continues to shape contemporary Russia.

The P. Diddy Trial – When the Verdict Is the Crime

The P. Diddy trial – when the verdict is the crime.

Guest post by Maureen Steele.

The Diddy trial should have been a watershed moment for justice. Instead, it became a textbook case of how the system protects predators when the predator is politically valuable.

Sean “Diddy” Combs faced federal charges stemming from decades of alleged abuse, rape, drugging, coercion, and trafficking. Woman after woman—some named, others protected under pseudonyms—testified under oath that Combs beat them, raped them, forced them into drug-fueled “freak-off” sex parties, and controlled them using surveillance, blackmail, threats, and psychological warfare. Cassie Ventura testified for four days about being raped, surveilled, and violently assaulted by Combs, including a 2016 incident caught on security footage that he allegedly paid to suppress. Another woman, known only as “Jane,” described being trafficked across state lines and drugged during group sex scenarios orchestrated by Combs. Other witnesses, like singer Dawn Richard, told the jury they personally witnessed Combs physically assault Cassie and threaten those who tried to intervene. A makeup artist, a male escort, and even Kid Cudi contributed testimony that outlined not just one abusive man, but a fully functioning system of control and exploitation.

Yet despite all of that—the testimony, the physical evidence, the corroborating witnesses—the jury convicted him of just two minor counts: transporting individuals across state lines for prostitution. The rest of the charges? Not guilty.

How does that happen? Easy. The system was never built for truth. It was built for containment.

The jury, before they could even deliberate, was handed a 40-page instruction manual. Forty pages. Imagine being told to use your common sense and moral clarity—and then being slapped with a legal manual full of qualifiers, disqualifiers, and narrow definitions that limit what you’re allowed to consider. That’s not a fair fight. That’s not justice. That’s legalized jury tampering. And no, that’s not hyperbole. The U.S. legal system forces juries to interpret statutes so convoluted that even lawyers and judges disagree on what they mean. When a juror can’t rely on their gut, their reason, or what they saw with their own eyes, and instead has to become a mini-lawyer overnight just to understand what “coercion” or “racketeering” means, then the outcome has already been manipulated.

Jurors weren’t allowed to see everything. Key evidence—graphic videos, security footage, and even the notorious “freak-off” recordings—was either sealed or tightly controlled. Prosecutors dropped several key allegations mid-trial, including kidnapping and arson, in what they called a strategic narrowing of focus. The Sun reported that the most sensational and potentially damning elements were omitted or downplayed to “avoid prejudicing the jury.” In other words, jurors were never given the full picture. And then they were told to decide a man’s fate while blindfolded.

The defense didn’t deny the sex parties, the drugs, or even the violence. They simply reframed it. They argued that everything was consensual. That the victims were into it. That they only came forward later for money. That they were scorned lovers, opportunists, or drama queens. It’s the oldest play in the predator handbook—blame the victim, muddy the waters, and make jurors question what “coercion” really means. And it worked. Because when the law is written in a way that confuses morality, victims don’t stand a chance.

Then there’s the elephant in the courtroom: power. Diddy isn’t just a music mogul. He’s rumored to be a federal informant, protected for years because of what—and who—he knows. His ties reportedly stretch from the White House to record executives to shadowy federal handlers. And one of the lead prosecutors on this case? Maureen Comey, daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, who himself has a long and dubious history with selective enforcement and political interference. What are the odds?

If you believe this trial was about holding a predator accountable, think again. This was a controlled burn—an effort to make just enough noise to satisfy the public without ever truly exposing the broader network of powerful people behind him. Because Diddy was not acting alone. He was not financing, housing, and trafficking women without institutional protection. That protection came from the same kinds of lawyers, judges, celebrities, politicians, and bureaucrats who buried the Jeffrey Epstein case for years.

The women who testified in this trial are now in more danger than they were before. They were told by prosecutors that if they were brave enough to come forward, the system would protect them. That was a lie. There is no protection. There is no safety net. These women are now exposed, hunted, and permanently marked for having spoken out against a man with powerful friends. They will be harassed. They will be threatened. Their careers, families, and personal safety are all now in jeopardy because they did what the justice system says it wants: they told the truth.

But the message this verdict sends is unmistakable: don’t come forward. If you do, we’ll use you for headlines, make you relive your trauma in front of strangers, and then we’ll let the predator walk free anyway. Your abuse will become courtroom theater. And the system will hand out a slap on the wrist and call it justice.

This wasn’t justice. This was legal theater.

The truth is, our legal system is broken. It does not serve truth. It serves process. It serves politics. It serves power. And when the defendant is powerful enough, well-connected enough, and dangerous enough to bring other elites down with him, the process becomes the cover-up.

Victims never stood a chance.

And until we dismantle the rigged rules, simplify the law, remove the bureaucratic blinders from our juries, and force transparency into every corner of the courtroom, we will keep seeing this same play over and over again.

The bad guy walks. The victims disappear. And the world pretends not to notice.

Not this time.  Not anymore.

Obama Getting Back in the Political Game in Bid to Boost Flailing Democratic Party: Report

Is this what the embattled Democrats need right now?

As President Donald Trump chugs along his second term, generally notching more wins than losses, many Democrats have all echoed a similar question:

“Where is Barack Obama?”

Sans a party figurehead — like the role Trump presently occupies for the GOP — the leader-less Democrats have been looking for some sort of unifying voice to guide the party amid the ongoing Congressional reign of the Republican supermajority.

The last two leaders of the Democrats, former President Joe Biden and failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris, have both been somewhat rejected by their own party — once before, and once after the general election, respectively.

In lieu of such leadership, the Democrats have yet to find a current elected official to rally around, though that hasn’t stopped some younger voices, such as Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jasmine Crockett, from pushing for leadership positions within the party.

Both Ocasio-Cortez and Crockett, however, lack the proven experience when it comes to guiding the Democratic Party as a large whole.

Obama has had that experience. He’s just not been especially present.

According to Axios, that’s set to change.

The outlet reports that Obama will be “joining DNC chair Ken Martin for a high-dollar fundraiser in Red Bank, New Jersey, on Friday evening.”

Of note, it’s the first such event that Obama has participated in since the Democrats lost Congress and the White House to the Republicans in 2024.

Obama’s apparent return to the political arena comes as a few crucial elections come up for the Democrats.

This coming November, New Jersey holds critical gubernatorial and state legislative elections. Next November will coincide with the 2026 midterms, which will represent the best chance for Democrats to swing the balance of political power until 2028.

That being said, for Democratic pessimists, questions linger if this is “too little, too late” from the ex-president.

As the generally Democrat-friendly NBC News reported in late May, “Obama world” had apparently lost “its shine in a changing, hurting Democratic Party.”

“David Plouffe, long hailed as the brilliant architect of Obama’s 2008 victory, served in a key role in Harris’ campaign and is now among those tagged with a devastating defeat,” the outlet noted.

“The shine’s off Plouffe now. He was the golden boy,” Democratic megadonor John Morgan told NBC. “Now he’s just an old broken-down boy, who lost. Big.”

Morgan’s assessment, however biting it may be, is still just one person’s take. Alas, it’s not just him.

“While many Democrats still admire Plouffe’s successes, the harsh words punctuated a growing sentiment across a party searching for a path forward: Team Obama’s bloom may be falling off the rose,” NBC News noted.

Perhaps, worse yet for the Democrats, Obama’s luster doesn’t appear to have been lost, it appears to have been stolen.

“The so-called Obama coalition of voters — less politically engaged voters, younger voters and voters of color — is no more,” NBC reports. “In 2024, each of those groups shifted toward Trump in high numbers.”
