Not Making Headlines: In Just Six Months into Trump 47’s Administration – US Business Investment is Surging at the Fastest Pace Since 1997 – Treasury Sec. Scott Bessent Weighs In

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cheers the news that Trump’s economic plan is working.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent joined Maria Bartiromo on Mornings with Maria this week.

Bessent broke the news that President Trump’s pro-growth policies are driving a major CapEx comeback.

According to Investopedia, CapEx, or capital expenditures, refers to the money a company uses to acquire, upgrade, or maintain physical assets. CapEx investments are essential for a business’s growth.

Thanks to President Trump, business investment is surging in the United States at the fastest pace since 1997!

Scott Bessent cheered the news on Mornings with Maria:

Treasury Secretary Bessent:  Maria, this is a combination. It’s the tariff’s bringing back manufacturing to the US. It’s the full expensing in the One Big, Beautiful Bill, which I think is one of the most important things that we did.

Companies can do 100% expensing for equipment, 100% expensing for factories. If you bring your factory back here. I think we had big pent-up demand.

We are in the middle of this incredible AI boom that I don’t know whether you want to say this is the third, fourth, fifth industrial revolution. We’re seeing the hyperscaler spend like we never have before.

I think what’s really gone unheralded here is the Trump administration’s emphasis on deregulation. We are making it possible to build things in America again. For years, if you wanted to build a factory, a pipeline, a transmission grid, you were held up by permitting. President Trump has given, whether it’s EPA, the Energy Interior, a mandate that these permits should get out within a month. So America is building things again.

I tell you, this is the way that countries get rich and stay rich is through long-term investment and productivity.

Here is Scott with Maria earlier this week.

It is remarkable what President Trump, Secretary Bessent, and his team have accomplished in just six months in office!

According to Secretary Bessent, business equipment production jumped 11% in the second quarter after a huge 23% gain in quarter one. This is the strongest back-to-back growth since 1997!

Pam Bondi Forced to Withdraw from CPAC Summit After ‘Sudden Medical Condition’

Attorney General Pam Bondi

Attorney General Pam Bondi abruptly dropped off CPAC’s high-profile Summit Against Human Trafficking this Wednesday, claiming she suffered a “torn cornea” and couldn’t make it.

The announcement was read live on stage by Acting Assistant AG Matthew Galeotti.

Galeotti:
“Thank you all for being here with us today and for having me. I do have a note from the Attorney General—Attorney General Pam Bondi—that I wanted to share, which is the following:

‘I’m sorry to miss all of my CPAC friends today, especially Matt and Mercy Schlapp, Senator Blackburn, and the wonderful team at the Tim Tebow Foundation. Unfortunately, I am recovering from a recently torn cornea, which is preventing me from being with you. I truly wish I was able to join you and support all of the work being done on this critical issue.’”

The announcement came just hours after WSJ allegations that she’d told President Trump his name appears multiple times in Jeffrey Epstein’s sealed file trove.

The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday dropped another Trump-Epstein hit piece after the DOJ asked three different courts to unseal grand jury transcripts related to Epstein’s sex trafficking cases.

According to The Wall Street Journal, US Attorney General Pam Bondi told President Trump in May that he is mentioned in the Epstein files.

However, Bondi said the information about the several people who appeared in the Epstein files is “unverified hearsay.”

“When Justice Department officials reviewed what Attorney General Pam Bondi called a “truckload” of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein earlier this year, they discovered that Donald Trump’s name appeared multiple times, according to senior administration officials,” The Wall Street Journal reported.

“In May, Bondi and her deputy informed the president at a meeting in the White House that his name was in the Epstein files, the officials said. Many other high-profile figures were also named, Trump was told. Being mentioned in the records isn’t a sign of wrongdoing,” WSJ said.

The Justice Department responded with fire.

“This is a collection of falsehoods and innuendo designed to push a bullshit narrative and drive clicks,” according to Gates McGavick.

Mike Flynn UNLOADS on Former CIA Director Mike Pompeo Over Russia Hoax Comments: “PLEASE GO AWAY, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE DONE WITH YOU!”

Credit: Gage Skidmore; Staff Sgt. Jonathan Lovelady

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Mike Flynn, who was viciously targeted by the Obama-Biden deep state witch hunt, has absolutely eviscerated former Secretary of State and ex-CIA chief Mike Pompeo on social media.

Flynn’s blistering statement calls out Pompeo’s utter failure to act when he had the power to crush the Russia hoax and protect America from the radical left’s endless witch hunts.

On Tuesday, Mike Pompeo took to X following the release of newly declassified presidential briefing documents by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. The documents place Barack Obama at the center of the Trump-Russia collusion hoax.

“The notion that President Trump “colluded” with Russia has always been false, and the politicization of our intelligence services in the service of that hoax did enormous damage to public trust,” Pompeo wrote on X.

His post included a video statement in which he expanded on the point:

Mike Pompeo:
“If you’re Vladimir Putin, would you rather have Joe Biden or Donald Trump as the President of the United States? The answer is really easy. You invaded Ukraine when President Biden was there. You invaded Ukraine when President Obama was there. You didn’t touch the darn thing when President Trump was there. I think it actually proves itself.

But if you want to get even deeper about the things we did in the first Trump administration: we provided defensive weapon systems to Ukraine. Obama refused. Biden didn’t want to do it.

We made energy prices low by building, building, building here—drilling, drilling, drilling here. That hurt Putin dramatically. We put an enormous number of sanctions on the Russian regime. We had real deterrence.

I am confident that the second version of Trump—the second term of President Trump—will do precisely the same.

This narrative that somehow President Trump, or Donald Trump, was a Russian asset or connected to Putin, or that Putin had some goods on him, has always been false. It’s always been known to be false, and yet was distributed by the mainstream media and by a White House that was determined to push back against the lost election.”

Flynn, a retired three-star general and former National Security Advisor to President Trump, has long held that Pompeo was one of the biggest silent enablers of the Deep State narrative that crippled Trump’s first term.

According to Flynn, Pompeo knew the Russia hoax was a fabrication from Day One but chose cowardly silence over truth and transparency.

“[Mike Pompeo] You were the CIA Director and the Secretary of State with access to all of it—yet you said nothing and did nothing when you could have stopped it all,” Flynn wrote on X.

“Please go away. The American people are done with you!”

Mike Flynn will be one of the featured guest speakers at the most important conference of the decade — “VINDICATED: American Heroes Who Stood Up to the Deep State” — presented by The Gateway Pundit in Las Vegas. Buy your tickets here.

House Oversight Panel Votes to Subpoena Bill and Hillary Clinton, Comey, Barr, Garland, Holder, and Mueller in Bombshell Epstein Investigation

The House Oversight Committee’s subcommittee took aim at the Deep State—voting to subpoena a who’s-who of Washington heavyweights, including Hillary Clinton, former FBI director James Comey, ex–AGs Barr, Garland, Holder, and even Special Counsel Mueller—in connection with the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.

Led by Republican Rep. Scott Perry (PA) and voted through by an overwhelming voice vote, the motion directs Oversight Chair James Comer (R‑KY) to formally issue subpoenas compelling these top officials to testify and submit documents related to Epstein’s network—and potentially incriminating ties into elite circles.

“I have a motion to subpoena the following individuals to expand the full committees investigation into Miss Maxwell – and the list reads as follows: William Jefferson Clinton, Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton, James Brian Comey, Loretta Elizabeth Lynch, Eric Hampton Holder, Jr., Merrick Brian Garland, Robert Swan Mueller III, William Pelham Barr, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions the third, and Alberto Gonzales. That’s the full list, Mr. Chairman. And that’s the motion,” Perry said.

More from Fox News:

The motion passed by voice vote, meaning there was not an individual roll call.

The subpoenas would actually need to be issued by Comer to be active.

A House Oversight Committee aide told Fox News Digital, “The subpoenas will be issued in the near future.”

It comes after Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., a member of the progressive “Squad,” pushed for a vote on her own motion to subpoena any files related to Epstein.

That motion passed in an 8-to-2 vote, also directing Comer to issue that subpoena.

Republican lawmakers have dealt with a barrage of media scrutiny on Epstein’s case over the last two weeks. It’s a side effect of the fallout over a recent Department of Justice (DOJ) memo effectively declaring the matter closed.

On Wednesday, the House Oversight Subcommittee on Federal Law Enforcement also voted to subpoena the Department of Justice (DOJ) to release all of the Epstein files with three Republicans joining the Democrat motion.

The Gateway Pundit also reported that the House Oversight Committee voted to subpoena Epstein-affiliate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for recruiting and sex-trafficking underage girls for Epstein to groom and abuse.

Chairman Comer announced on Wednesday that he issued the subpoena for a deposition to occur at Federal Correctional Institution Tallahassee on August 11, 2025.

JD Vance Had to Be Shaking in His Boots When He Saw the Protest Assembled for His Nantucket Visit … Just Kidding

On Tuesday, a group of protesters gathered on the road to jeer at Vice President J.D. Vance's motorcade in Nantucket, Massachusetts.

On Tuesday, a group of protesters gathered on the road to jeer at Vice President J.D. Vance's motorcade in Nantucket, Massachusetts.

Affluent liberals fill their empty lives with so many strange activities that ordinary people view them as curiosities of nature. Like exotic zoo animals, they seem singularly unaware of the impression they leave on those who watch them.

Of course, that analogy has limits. After all, even zoo animals know better than to humiliate themselves by tussling with Vice President J.D. Vance.

In a series of clips posted Tuesday to the social media platform X, a small group of dimwitted malcontents assembled on the ritzy island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, to protest Vance’s arrival ahead of a massive private fundraiser for the Republican National Committee.

Admittedly, the phrase “dimwitted malcontents” reads as uncharitable, especially from a Christian.

Nonetheless, one simply must read the signs they carried in order to appreciate the magnitude of their idiocy.

First, like all good, rich, white liberals, they pretended to love immigrants. And by “immigrants” they meant “illegal immigrants.”

“Fund Ukraine Not ICE,” one woman’s sign read.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, of course, do not arrest legal immigrants. So the denizens of uber-wealthy Nantucket showed their exquisite liberal sensibilities by supporting the lawbreaking kind.

Second, some women held signs that referred to Vance’s “childless cat ladies” comment, which liberals and their allies in the establishment media tried to turn into a controversy early in the 2024 presidential campaign, shortly after Vance accepted now-President Donald Trump’s offer to serve as his running mate.

Examples of feline-themed protest signs included “My Cat Respects Women” and “Cat Women Scratch Back.”

One wonders how the vice president survived the trauma of such vicious barbs.

Finally, the rich morons freely protesting on the side of a road imagined themselves in an authoritarian hellscape.

“It’s Looking a Lot Like 1930s Germany Right Now,” one sign read, while another contradicted that observation by declaring “This Is Not 1938 Fascist Germany.”

In between those two fools, another sign read “Big Brother Is Watching,” a reference to George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984.” The sign featured a picture of the vice president.

Hilariously — you cannot make this up — the protester holding that anti-authoritarian sign sported the cloth mask of the COVID cult.

Moreover, one sign impressively combined two different strands of lunacy.

“Even Cats Know J.D. Is a Lying Fascist,” the sign read.

WARNING: The following posts contains vulgar language that may offend some readers.

Another video showed the protesters jeering when the vice president’s motorcade passed. Conveniently, it was a small enough gathering that one could easily hear individual protesters’ voices.

End Wokeness, a prominent conservative account on X, described the group as “all elderly cat ladies.”

Meanwhile, Vance helped raise a $3 million in donations, a Nantucket record for the RNC, per the New York Post.

That should help soothe the vice president’s lacerated feelings over having incurred the wrath of rich cat ladies who think they live in a fascist state.

Fortunately for the protesters, they did not have to confront Vance directly. After all, that has not worked out very well for Democrats and their establishment media allies.

Thus, deprived of that spectacle, one can only marvel at affluent liberals behaving strangely in their natural habitat.

American Citizen Calls for “Death to the U.S. and Israel” After Visit to Iran

A video circulating on social media has ignited fierce controversy: a U.S. citizen, identified as “Kyla” in some descriptions, can be heard shouting extremist slogans during a trip to Iran. In the video, the individual expresses gratitude for the hospitality of the Persian nation and ends with strong declarations: “Death to the U.S. Death to Israel… and fight against Zionism and imperialism.” The message has sparked outrage among conservative circles, who are demanding that any American calling for the destruction of their own country be stripped of citizenship and deported.

Update: MS-13 Gang Member Kilmar Abrego Garcia Remains in Custody of US Marshals After Obama Judge Orders Him to be Released

Update: MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia is currently in custody after a rogue Obama judge ordered him to be released from a Tennessee prison.

As reported earlier: A Tennessee-based federal judge on Wednesday ordered the release of MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia – and a Maryland judge, appointed by Barack Obama, immediately blocked ICE from detaining Abrego Garcia.

Last month, a federal magistrate judge in Tennessee agreed to delay the release of MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia so he doesn’t get deported.

A federal grand jury in Tennessee recently indicted Kilmar Abrego Garcia for “transporting undocumented migrants within the United States.”

He was charged with one count of conspiracy to transport aliens and one count of unlawful transportation of undocumented aliens.

The DOJ previously told the Court that Abrego Garcia will be deported to a ‘third country’ that is not El Salvador after he is released from a Tennessee jail.

On Wednesday, US District Judge Waverly Crenshaw, an Obama appointee, ordered Kilmar Abrego released from prison.

Judge Paula Xinis, also an Obama appointee overseeing the civil suit filed by Abrego Garcia’s wife, immediately barred ICE from taking Abrego Garcia into custody.

The Department of Homeland Security responded to the lawless judge’s order.

Later Wednesday, the DOJ said Abrego Garcia is still in custody.

Abrego Garcia’s release conditions are paused for 30 days, subject to further notice. Abrego Garcia “shall therefore remain in the custody of the United States Marshal pending further order..”

Dear Ron Paul

Dear Ron Paul

Ron Paul is turning 90 and he wants to hear from you.

Ron Paul should have been president.

That’s how I see it at least. On everything that has come to matter the most, he has been vindicated. The wars have been a disaster and Dr. Paul knew it. The money printing has run this country’s economy ragged and enriched its most deceitful. And Dr. Paul knew it. Our people are spied on, pried on, cajoled, mocked, and belittled by the intelligence agencies and federal bureaucrats who throw around words such as “terror” while targeting our civil liberties. And Dr. Paul knew it.

When it wasn’t pretty, Dr. Paul would say it. At a time when war fervor was rampant in the United States, Paul implored Americans to seek a deeper understanding of the global theater. “Have you ever read about the reasons they attacked us?” Paul asked his peers during the 2007 GOP debate in South Carolina. “They attack us because we’ve been over there!” Paul, more than any Republican of the last 50 years, gave the sharpest summation of the disastrous consequences America has faced in the postwar era as a result of blowback stemming from our misadventures in the Middle East. At a time when most of the Republican Party was dreaming of a post-global new world order spearheaded by the American security state, Dr. Paul said they were wrong. And Dr. Paul was right.

On all of it. The really big stuff. Paul knew this country was headed in the wrong direction and that its feckless leaders were merrily carving the path. The stock market is at an all-time high. The housing market is at an all-time high. The debt is at an all-time high. Crypto, whether it’s useless or not, is at an all-time high. Gold is pumping like the dollar is toilet paper. But Americans, when polled, list the economy, inflation, and rising prices as their deepest concerns. Americans under the age of 40 no longer see home ownership as an attainable goal. Everything has gone up except the quality of life for most Americans these last few years. Paul, a long promoter of sound money and fiscal federal spending, saw it all coming. And it’s why he almost became president.

I remember how they sabotaged him, too. I remember how they tore apart his character and anyone associated with his movement for radically resetting a bloated and failed political and economic experiment. They called him an antisemite (of course). Anyone who questions America’s blind affinity for Israel receives a similar fate. Such are the blows. Must’ve been tough for Dr. Paul and his family, the way it went down in 2012. I know it’s been tough on America. But I’d like Dr. Paul to know, and I’m sure he does, that many of us still remember that campaign, not for its losses but for the way it transformed and elevated rote discussions on foreign policy from within the conservative movement. When you hear people talk about America First, they’re talking about Ron Paul as much as Pat Buchanan and Donald Trump. That’s his legacy. As a dreamer. Someone who dreamed of a better America. And we dreamed it with him.

That’s exactly what I plan on telling Dr. Paul when I send a letter to the former Representative and Republican presidential candidate in celebration of his upcoming birthday. Dr. Paul, a man whose political voice is echoed in our bravest and most sincere endeavors as a people and a nation, turns 90 on August 20. A tremendous achievement by one of our finest men. His son, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, is asking anyone who feels so inclined to write the aging statesman. “He would enjoy hearing from you!” Paul attached a P.O. box address below his post to X on Monday: P.O. Box 1776 Lake Jackson, TX 77566.

Reaching out to Dr. Paul on his late birthday is a nice way to remind him and ourselves of what it all meant. And it did mean a lot. So, thanks again Dr. Paul. I hope it’s a fantastic birthday.

How Close Was Iran to a Nuclear Deal Before They Were Bombed?

How Close Was Iran to a Nuclear Deal Before They Were Bombed?

At least two diplomatic pathways were available.

Top officials from the U.S. and Iran had completed a full five rounds of talks on Iran’s civilian nuclear program. Both sides evaluated the talks as “constructive.” A sixth round was on the immediate horizon. Then the bombing of Iran began.

The promising chronology prior to Israeli and American strikes in June raises two questions: How close exactly were the U.S. and Iran to an agreement? And what might that deal have looked like?

A growing body of testimonial evidence suggests the two sides were very close to a deal indeed. There was a diplomatic pathway to ensuring that Iran kept its promise that its peaceful civilian nuclear program would never metastasize into a military one. Instead of continuing down that path, President Donald Trump seems to have greenlit military action, which broke the already fragile trust and made arriving at an agreement more challenging.

The Iranian negotiating team was led by its foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi. In an opinion piece for the Financial Times published earlier this month, Araghchi writes that Iran and the U.S. “were on the cusp of a historic breakthrough.” He says that in “five meetings over nine weeks, US special envoy Steve Witkoff and I achieved more than I did in four years of nuclear negotiations with the failed Biden administration.”

Araghchi adds that the two men “held detailed, frank discussions” on “several ideas for a win-win solution, put forward by both sides, and by Oman.” Optimism was in the air. “Things were looking up, with a flurry of messages exchanged,” Araghchi writes. “But only 48 hours before a pivotal sixth meeting, Israel launched an unprovoked assault on my country.”

Tehran’s foreign minister is not alone in feeling that the two sides “were on the cusp” of an agreement. Retired ambassador and former Iranian nuclear negotiator Seyed Hossein Mousavian says that informed Iranian sources told him that the talks had progressed so far that “the key elements of the deal between Witkoff and Araghchi were agreed upon.”

According to Mousavian, the deal had five key points. 1) Tehran would consent to maximum nuclear transparency and inspections. 2) It would either convert or export its stockpile of 60-percent enriched uranium (Russia had said they were prepared to take Iran’s excess enriched uranium and convert it to fuel for reactors). 3) It would cease high-level enrichment and cap future enrichment at the 3.67 percent needed for a civilian energy program. 4) It would fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in resolving any outstanding technical ambiguities. 5) In return, Iran would be permitted to have its civilian nuclear program, and the U.S. would lift all nuclear-related sanctions.

That reachable deal would have satisfied both Iran’s insistence on their right to a civilian enrichment program and the American insistence that Iran never pursue a military nuclear program, and it would have provided sufficient international oversight to guarantee compliance.

And that was not the only possible agreement on the table. Mousavian told The American Conservative that “Iran was also positive about the idea of a consortium.” The idea behind an international nuclear consortium was that various roles in the enrichment process would be distributed among member nations so that each would share in the process, but none could control it fully or beyond oversight. In one version, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates would join. Iran could enrich the uranium, satisfying its demand, but it could not fully enrich the uranium alone, satisfying the American demand. Nuclear experts from each country could visit each other’s facilities with their watchful eyes helping the IAEA ensure that all activities remained peaceful.

Iran had indicated that it was open to a regional nuclear consortium. Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Majid Takht Ravanchi, confirmed that “the idea of a nuclear consortium” was “brought up.” He even said that the idea “can be worked on” if treated seriously in the context of constructive diplomacy.

Trita Parsi—a co-founder of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and an expert on U.S.-Iran diplomacy—told me in an email that the idea was indeed being discussed seriously. The plan would have granted Iran enrichment on its soil but without full control of the process.

“According to the Iranians,” Parsi said, “the Omanis had put forward a significant compromise package in the last round of talks in Rome that entailed a consortium on Iranian soil with involvement by several pro-Western states. It would have enabled the Iranians to insist that their red line of enrichment had been safeguarded, while Trump could have boasted that Iran would no longer do unilateral enrichment.” Parsi added that “the Iranians were planning to put forward a refined version of this that would be even more attractive to the U.S. in the round of talks that never occurred.” Instead, the bombing began.

The evidence suggests that Iran was very close to a possible deal with the U.S. when the negotiations were exploded by the bombing campaign. Moreover, at least two diplomatic paths forward were available, one involving enrichment caps plus IAEA oversight and the other taking the creative form of an international consortium. Sadly, and dangerously, an unnecessary war has made not one but two once-imminent agreements much harder to reach.

Hong Kong has Become Just Another Chinese Captive

Hong Kong has Become Just Another Chinese Captive

The CCP now dominates a city once known for individual liberties.

Hongkong,-,November,18,,2019:,Hong,Kong,Riot,Police,Shoot

Under Great Britain, Hong Kong was a free city. Not democratic, since residents didn’t choose or control their government. Nevertheless, the then-British colony protected free thought and expression. Hong Kongers could criticize public officials and cooperate with the world. These liberties initially survived the territory’s return to the People’s Republic of China (PRC). People could even stage protests pressing Beijing to fulfill its promise to preserve the separate system of what is now called the “Special Administrative Region” (SAR).

No longer, alas. Today the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) rules Hong Kong like it rules the mainland, with the partial exception of a thin veneer of a local authority. A new report from Human Rights Watch details the consequences:

Since adopting the National Security Law [NSL], the Chinese government has largely dismantled freedoms of expression, association and assembly, as well as free and fair elections, fair trial rights and judicial independence. The government has increasingly politicized education, created impunity for police abuses, and ended the city’s semi-democracy. Many of Hong Kong’s independent civil society groups, labor unions, political parties, and media outlets have been shuttered.

The Chinese government has been building a new and opaque national security legal regime and bureaucracy, weaponizing the courts to hand down severe punishment for dissent—up to life in prison—and harassing and surveilling Hong Kongers at home and abroad.

Five years ago Beijing imposed the draconian NSL on the nominally autonomous SAR. Assurances that the measure would have only limited application proved false. China ruthlessly imposed the law, which had little to do with national security and everything to do with CCP control. At Beijing’s behest, local authorities turned the legislation into a blueprint for tyranny. Mere criticism of communist rule is now treated as a dire threat to the territory’s security and thus a criminal offense—resulting in lengthy pretrial detention, almost certain conviction, and unfairly long imprisonment.

The measure was so effective because it was excessive and oppressive. Reported the New York Times: “More than 10,000 people were arrested during the monthslong uprising that began as peaceful mass rallies but grew sometimes violent as the police responded with force. Almost a quarter of those were convicted of crimes that include rioting and national security offenses.” Last year the Hong Kong authority, seeking the approbation of the PRC, added its own national security legislation. Under this measure too, Amnesty International found, people “have been targeted and harshly punished for the clothes they wear as well as the things they say and write, or for minor acts of protest, intensifying the climate of fear that already pervaded Hong Kong. Freedom of expression has never been under greater attack.”

In most cases prosecution was directed at thought crimes rather than criminal activities. A new Amnesty analysis found: “More than 80% of people convicted under Hong Kong’s National Security Law (NSL) have been wrongly criminalized and should never have been charged in the first place … . [Amnesty’s] analysis of 255 individuals targeted under national security legislation in Hong Kong since 30 June 2020 also showed that bail was denied in almost 90% of cases where charges were brought, and that those denied bail were forced to spend an average of 11 months in detention before facing trial.”

Tragic was the speedy collapse of a freedom movement that had turned out millions of protestors. Political parties, respected academics, independent jurists, critical journalists, democratic activists, and even elected officials were routed by Beijing’s brutal assault. Hong Kongers who failed to race for the exit were arrested and convicted for alleged offenses from years past. Those who later sought to flee faced charges akin to “Republikflucht” in East Germany.

Resistance to the Xi government’s takeover effectively ended almost immediately. Since then, the authorities have mounted an extended operation to mop up what little opposition remained, with an emphasis on retroactively punishing activists who originally escaped prosecution when street protests dominated the city. Local apparatchiks neither forgot nor forgave, filling Hong Kong’s gaol with those who refused to bend their knees to the territory’s new masters.

Still, the League of Social Democrats, established two decades ago, carried on, one of the SAR’s last pro-democracy parties. Alas, there was little democracy for it to defend. For instance, Hong Kong sentenced 45 political activists, including League founder Leung Kwok-hung, to as many as ten years in prison for organizing a primary for the Legislative Council election. Hong Kongers with inconvenient political views are no longer allowed to even run for office. As the anniversary of the NSL’s passage approached, the League closed down, pointing to “immense political pressure,” but added: “Even as we step aside, we stand with those still struggling in the shadows.”

In June, the China Labor Bulletin, which covered worker protests in the PRC, shut its doors as well. The organization cited financial issues, but according to the New York Times it “had also faced increased scrutiny in recent years amid a broader crackdown and silencing of civil society in Hong Kong.” The founder, Han Dongfang, said the authorities spied on his organization. This continues a process that Amnesty International once described as “an accelerating disappearance of independent civil society groups from the city.”

Beijing is satisfied with nothing short of total submission. Xia Baolong, China’s Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, the territory’s real decider, emphasized that there was more repression to come: “We must clearly see that the anti-China and Hong Kong chaos elements are still ruthless and are renewing various forms of soft resistance.” The PRC’s local gauleiter, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, is ever ready to comply, turning to his Chinese masters whenever necessary. His government continues to find prosecution targets galore, recently announcing that various agencies “conducted a joint operation … in respect of a suspected case of ‘collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security’.”

Moreover, the SAR government openly uses its regulatory power to punish and persecute. Bookstores are often targeted, especially those carrying dissenting political content or run by former political activists. Raymond Yeung Tsz-chun, co-owner of Hillway Culture, which closed two years ago, observed: “A lot of bookshops in Hong Kong have been regularly checked by government departments.” He told Voice of America that his store was “checked monthly. This is like political pressure.”

Leticia Wong Man-huen, a former democracy activist and district councilor who owns Hunter Bookstore, said her shop is regularly visited by government officials, calling the intrusions “not normal.” Similarly, according to VOA, Mount Zero bookstore closed last year “after facing a series of warnings from government departments about minor violations, from the use of the alley for book talks to the paving of a small uneven public space in front of its entrance.” Raymond To, an artist and Mount Zero customer, said, “It’s getting hard for [independent booksellers] to exist.”

The authorities seek to enforce ideological conformity. With libraries and leading chain bookstores stripped of dissenting literature, independent venues have become a haven for free thinkers. “The Hong Kongers still treat these types of bookstores as a last resort,” opined Wong. “I guess the government also sees this point. They don’t want these liberal thoughts and space for civil society to remain.”

Even independent operators are cautious. Dexter Tse explained, “There are certain books we know are dangerous—really, really sensitive—and we will avoid them, such as those with an author who is a prominent political figure or already in jail.” Wong doesn’t sell volumes considered seditious by the authorities: “I’ll try to not censor, of course, but some books from the cover page or title are already sensitive.”

It isn’t just bookstores that face government harassment. Unsurprisingly, the regime targets journalists with a liberal bent. Hong Kong’s rating for press freedom by Reporters Without Borders has collapsed, falling from 80 in 2021 to 140 this year. In 2024 the CCP-backed authorities used British colonial sedition laws to jail journalists, while putting former Apple Daily publisher Jimmy Lai on trial for violating the NSL, for which he faces life imprisonment. His son Sebastien observed that “Hong Kong is now a place where some of its bravest and brightest citizens are sitting in jail” for reasons of “criminalizing the desire for freedom.”

For lesser threats the Lee regime deploys regulatory pressure. According to the Associated Press, “Hong Kong’s tax authorities targeted at least 20 people, including journalists, current or former heads of media organizations and their families, with audits without sufficient evidence.” Selina Cheng, who chairs the Hong Kong Journalists Association, noted that this undermines “press freedom,” which “not only means the ability for media and journalists to operate safely, physically … It also means the business environment, whether it is sustainable for them to operate.”

Equally ominous is the use of business regulation against non-political operations by one-time democracy activists. Doing so serves no purpose other than to punish people for supporting liberty. Despite having violated no law then and being politically neutered now, their livelihoods are being threatened. Detailed the Associated Press:

Shops and eateries owned by people once associated with the largely subdued pro-democracy movement are feeling a tightening grip through increased official inspections, anonymous complaint letters and other regulatory checks. Those critical of the city’s political changes say it’s a less visible side of a push to silence dissent that began five years ago when Beijing imposed a national security law to crush challenges to its rule, under which opposition politicians were jailed and pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily was shuttered.

Lee is acting like an old-fashioned tyrant. AP revealed, “A bakery that put up pro-democracy decorations during the 2019 protests saw food authorities’ inspections jump from quarterly to monthly over the past one to two years, mostly over labeling complaints.” Indeed, the authorities have made clear that their complaints are political, not hygienic. At issue is the NSL, which everyone is at risk of violating, apparently through what has been called “soft resistance.” Beijing’s compliant factotums remain on the hunt for enemies: “In recent weeks, food authorities sent letters to restaurants warning that their business licenses could be revoked if the government deems them to be endangering national security or public interest” (emphasis added).

Even those who have ceased resistance suffer. Observed the Times: “Thousands of young people lost careers, friends and dreams after taking part in mass antigovernment protests that erupted six years ago in Hong Kong.” Moreover, there has been an exodus in the hundreds of thousands from Hong Kong since passage of the NSL and ensuing crackdown. Many want to protect their children from increasing educational indoctrination. According to the Migration Policy Institute: “Hong Kong has experienced a pronounced exodus, contributing to a drop in its domestic population of young professionals and others.”

Yet Beijing’s hirelings have only increased their efforts to demonstrate that they are worthy overseers. The BBC described a “culture of anonymous informing.” Observed one Hong Konger who asked not to be identified: “Whether it’s t-shirts, a song, a mobile game, books, a newspaper op-ed or a social media post expressing dissatisfaction with the government, the crackdown on anything deemed seditious only seems to escalate month by month.”

Hong Kong is a tragedy. China’s promises to preserve the territory’s traditional liberties have proved false. Chan Po-ying, who chaired the disappearing League of Social Democrats, observed: “One country, two systems has already (become) one country, one system.” In Hong Kong, the PRC now unashamedly rules.
