Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was roasted online after openly bragging that the city will use public money to multiply qualifying donations to her reelection campaign.
Bass recently posted a desperate plea for cash on social media, completely exposing the Los Angeles political grift for all to see.
She wrote:
“When you donate to our campaign, the city can match your donation 6 to 1! If you donate $5, the city turns it into $35. Our campaign is powered by YOU! Click the link in our bio to make your matching donation today!”

“Our campaign is powered by YOU,” Bass declared, except for the six additional dollars supplied by the city for every qualifying dollar donated.
“The city turns it into $35.” That’s not “magic” money, Karen. That is TAXPAYER MONEY!
Under the arrangement, a supporter’s $5 contribution does not magically grow. The city adds another $30 in public funds, bringing the campaign’s total haul to $35. That means if a donor gives $20, the city adds $120 in taxpayer-funded matching funds, bringing the campaign’s total haul to $140. A $25 donation triggers another $150 from the city, producing $175 for the campaign, while a $30 contribution brings in $180 in public funds for a total of $210.
The shameless appeal immediately blew up in Bass’s face.
“How is this legal lol,” one X user responded.
Dr. Houman Hemmati, a Los Angeles physician and former congressional candidate, unloaded on Bass:
“Why on EARTH are LA City taxpayers, who can’t even afford to clean up their streets or have water in their fire hydrants, forced to match contributions to Bass’ Mayoral reelection campaign 6:1?!?”
“Is this a JOKE?!?” Hemmati asked.
Unfortunately, the program itself is real and legal.
Los Angeles voters approved a public matching-funds system decades ago. Qualified small donations from city residents are matched 6-to-1 with limited public money for candidates who opt in, meet thresholds, and accept spending limits. The Ethics Commission runs it. A $5 donation can indeed become $35 total. Bass previously collected over $1 million in matching funds during her 2022 run.
But legality does not equal legitimacy in the eyes of furious Angelenos watching their city burn, literally and figuratively, under Bass’s leadership.
