One of Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico’s wealthy White supporters has set off a major firestorm in East Austin after getting into a nasty argument with a student from a nearby historically Black college.
As FOX 7 Austin reported, a Huston-Tillotson student named Bri shared a video on her Instagram account @briii.likethecheese in which she is seen confronting a couple with a Talarico sign in their front yard. The home is just a few feet away from the university gates.
Bri claims in her post that the couple has been leaving notes on cars from students at the college to get them to move off the street. She says this is “harassment” because this is all public parking.
“Excuse me, do y’all live here? Y’all know that it’s legal to park right here, right?” Bri tells the couple in the video.
“What are you talking about?” the woman asks.
After Bri confronts the couple over their notes, the woman starts exerting her white liberal privilege in a very condescending fashion.
“We paid $1.5 million for our house; y’all’s graduation rates are 25%,” she snarks.
“You’re in a historically Black neighborhood,” Bri fires back.
“This is our neighborhood!” the woman yells.
Bri calls the woman a “Karen” and tells her not to scream at her.
The woman later says she will call the police, while Bri quips that she “can’t wait” to put this exchange online.
This explosive exchange caused protesters to swarm the couple’s home over the weekend. Many were seen carrying signs that read “You brought a house, not our history.”
Per FOX 7, the police were called despite the protest remaining peaceful.

Neighbors told FOX 7 Austin that they never had an issue with student parking before and were “very disappointed” by the liberal White woman’s actions.
We haven’t had any issues with parking at all. I don’t know why she felt the need to say it’s her neighborhood,” said Sybill Bradley.
“I was very upset. I was disappointed, frustrated, especially living as close as we are to that, to see that, and especially to hear the words that she said when she kept screaming, ‘my neighborhood.’ And then for her to make the remark about the school, that was very disappointing,” another neighbor told FOX 7 Austin. “If you didn’t want to socialize with us, you just speak and move on, but what happened the other day, we’ve never had that happen before.”
The City of Austin’s Transportation and Public Works department released the following statement to FOX & when asked about East 9th’s parking policy in the neighborhood. The statement appears to back up Bri’s assertions.
Parking is allowed on those blocks of East 9th Street. While there are some areas where drivers are not allowed to park — such as around corner clearances, at intersections, and in front of driveways — the curb is otherwise open for public parking.
