Police Arrest 3 They Say Planned to Carry Out Mass Shooting at Georgia High School

Shane Taylor, 17, was one of three arrested on charges connected with the school-shooting plot at Cherokee High School in Canton, Georgia. Investigators were alerted to the plot by suspicious social media posts.

Three people have been arrested after authorities learned of a conspiracy to carry out a shooting at a Georgia high school.

Cherokee High School was the target of the plot, police in Canton, Georgia, posted on Facebook.

The investigation began when the FBI “identified threatening social media posts and notified Cherokee County School District Police.”

A juvenile Canton resident was arrested on Oct. 20 and charged with conspiracy to commit murder and disruption or interference with the operation of public schools.

Three days later, two other individuals were arrested.

Shane Keith Taylor, 17, of Metter, Georgia, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder and locked up in the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center.

Michael Brandon Terry, 21, of Chatsworth, California, was arrested by the FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department. Terry faces a charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

Guns, ammunition, and electronic devices were seized by police agencies.

“The safety of our students and school staff is a top priority, and we take every threat seriously,” Canton Police Chief Marty Ferrell said, nothing that multiple agencies were involved in the arrests.

“I appreciate the quick action of our law enforcement partners and the dedication of our detectives in identifying and arresting the suspects,” he said.

“The Canton Police Department encourages parents to teach their children the importance of reporting threats and urges anyone who becomes aware of a threat to report it to law enforcement,” the post said.

Parents were told the arrests were related to an “alleged conspiracy to carry out a shooting at Cherokee High School,” a letter to parents said.

The letter said the juvenile arrested was formerly a student at the school.

The letter from school superintendent Mary Davis ended with a request to parents.

“I hope there might be time this evening for you to discuss the seriousness of this matter with your children,” the letter said.
