JUST IN: Democrat Senator Chris Murphy Hospitalized After Stroke

Democratic Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Friday during his son’s hockey game, his office said.

Murphy felt numbness in his arm during the contest, when he was taken to the hospital and later transferred to Johns Hopkins.

He is now “awake and alert” and expected to recover, according to Murphy’s chief of staff, Allison Herwitt.

Murphy, 53, is not up for reelection this year, but has been traveling across the country stumping for Democrats and fueling speculation of a 2028 presidential run.

He was expected to be in New Hampshire with Democratic Senate nominee Chris Pappas today.

“Yesterday afternoon, Senator Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game. He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” Herwitt said in a statement.

“He was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment. The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”

More from the Associated Press:

Three other Senate Democrats have had strokes in recent years.

Sens. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland had strokes in 2022 and have since recovered. Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman had a stroke while campaigning for his seat that same year and now uses adaptive technology in the Senate, including live captioning on a phone or tablet that transcribes words as people speak to him and helps him process the conversation.

Fetterman said on social media Sunday that his family “is rooting for Chris and his family for a full and speedy recovery.”

Several Republican senators, including Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Pete Ricketts of Nebraska also offered prayers for Murphy.

This is a developing story.
