Trump Announces End of Syria Sanctions

President Donald Trump, during a Tuesday speech in Saudi Arabia, announced he was lifting sanctions on Syria.

“I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness,” Trump said to applause. Sitting in the audience, de facto Saudi ruler Mohammed bin Salman clasped his chest in an expression of gratitude.

Trump is expected to meet with Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa—formerly known by his nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Jolani—in Riyadh on Wednesday. Sharaa’s militant group HTS overthrew the regime of Bashar al-Assad last December, and the new president is trying to establish international legitimacy.

Trump’s announcement marks a dramatic shift in U.S. policy. America had imposed severe sanctions against Syria to cripple the Assad government and punish its human rights violations. Critics said the restrictions inflicted suffering on the Syrian people while Assad and other elites continued living in luxury.

Trump is in the Middle East for a four-day tour of the Gulf, the first major foreign trip of his second term. Saudi Arabia was the first foreign destination in his first term as well.

Syrian President Al-Jolani Offers to Build a Trump Tower in Damascus Prior to Meetings with President Trump

Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa hopes to meet with President Trump and propose a Trump Tower in Damascus this week.

Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa seeks a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump while he is traveling this week in the Middle East to ease sanctions and improve relations.

Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, now refers to himself by his birth name as Ahmed al-Sharaa (Muhammad al-Jawlani). He was the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a Syrian militant group that evolved from the al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra.

Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Jolani and HTS now control Syria, including the capital city, Damascus.

Al-Jolani has been working to persuade the international media and foreign powers that he has transitioned from a terrorist commander to a statesman, but skepticism remains about whether such a transformation is genuine.

Al-Sharaa is set on meeting with President Donald Trump this week as he starts his Mideast trip in Saudi Arabia.

The Syrian leader is ready to propose to Trump, a Trump Tower in Damascus, a detente with Israel and U.S. access to Syria’s oil and gas.

Prior to his trip to the Middle East President Trump told reporters, “We’re going to have to make a decision on the sanctions … We may take them off of Syria, because we want to give them a fresh start.”

Trump is making stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates this week.

Biden’s Blunder, the Taliban, and U.S. Weapons: Trump Wants Them Back

In what may be one of the most devastating foreign policy failures in modern U.S. history, President Joe Biden’s reckless 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan did not simply leave a power vacuum, it handed America’s enemies one of the largest unauthorized arms transfers in history.

Today, billions of dollars in U.S. weapons and equipment are in the hands of terrorists, black market arms dealers, and hostile regimes.

U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Joshua Hines

According to the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), the Taliban earned over $3.4 billion in revenue last year, partly by selling seized U.S. weapons to global terror networks. Groups such as al-Qaeda affiliates, ISIS-K, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and others are actively using these weapons for attacks and training.

A recent BBC investigation revealed that half a million weapons captured by the Taliban are now unaccounted for—either lost, sold, or smuggled out.

The Taliban originally seized around one million items of U.S.-funded military hardware, including M4 and M16 rifles, Humvees, MRAPs, and even Black Hawk helicopters.

While much of the high-end equipment remains non-operational due to lack of training and maintenance capacity, thousands of vehicles and small arms have been deployed in combat or sold to the highest bidder.

The BBC confirmed that the Taliban admitted these weapons were missing during a closed-door UN meeting in Doha.

Despite Pentagon assurances that most equipment was disabled, the Taliban continues to flaunt U.S. hardware in military parades, most notably in August 2024, when they celebrated three years in power by showcasing captured gear at Bagram Airfield, once the main hub of U.S. and NATO operations.

Diplomats from China and Iran attended the parade, highlighting a new geopolitical reality: the U.S. is gone, and adversaries are taking its place.

Taliban leaders now view these weapons not just as tools of war but as symbols of legitimacy and power.

A black-market arms economy has emerged, with local commanders using WhatsApp to trade U.S. gear, often gifting weapons to consolidate control.

Even the United Nations noted that the Taliban allowed its regional commanders to keep 20% of all seized American weapons—further fueling fragmentation and underground trafficking.

President Trump, ahead of his second inauguration, blasted the Biden administration for handing over “$85 billion in weapons” to the Taliban.

While the exact value is debated, even conservative estimates peg the abandoned equipment at $7 billion or more, according to the Department of Defense.

Since resuming office, Trump has vowed to reclaim the gear, stating: “If we need to pay them, that’s fine—but we want our military equipment back.”

Yet the Taliban has refused, insisting the arms belong to the state. Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid declared, “We seized these weapons from the previous administration and will use them to defend the country.”

Meanwhile, China and Russia have cautiously moved to expand their presence in Afghanistan, seeking to exploit the vacuum left by the U.S. withdrawal. Both countries have reopened embassies in Kabul and hosted Taliban delegations.

In 2023, China became the first country to accept credentials from a Taliban-appointed ambassador—an act of limited diplomatic recognition.

Russia, too, has kept channels open but, like China, stopped short of formally recognizing the Taliban as the legitimate government.

Though often described as eager to tap into Afghanistan’s estimated $1 trillion in untapped mineral reserves, including lithium, copper, and rare earths, neither China nor Russia has signed any major extraction agreements.

At most, a handful of non-binding MOUs have been floated, but none have resulted in actual mining operations.

The reasons are clear: Afghanistan remains too unstable, too underdeveloped, and too unskilled to support large-scale industrial extraction.

The rugged terrain, lack of roads and power infrastructure, and a complete absence of educated technical labor mean that any serious resource project would require foreign companies to build everything from scratch, at high cost and high risk.

Even China, known for braving hostile environments to secure strategic minerals, has held back. For both China and Russia, religious and cultural differences, along with the risk of jihadist spillover into their own Muslim regions, have further complicated relations.

Still, the Taliban continues to signal interest in aligning with anti-U.S. powers in hopes of securing legitimacy and investment.

Afghanistan may be drifting into the orbit of America’s adversaries, but for now, it remains a pawn, not a partner, in their broader geopolitical strategy.

To make matters worse, the U.S. oversight body SIGAR will shut down in 2026, eliminating the last official line of accountability for U.S. equipment and aid in the region.

Former SIGAR head John Sopko has argued that retrieving the weapons may not be financially feasible, but the strategic cost of leaving them in hostile hands is far more dangerous.

This is not just a policy failure. It is a long-term national security liability, one that continues to arm terrorists, embolden authoritarian states, and erode American influence across one of the world’s most volatile regions.

Secret Epstein Video Allegedly Showing Prince Andrew with Virginia Giuffre Expected to Be Released: Report

Secret footage allegedly showing Prince Andrew with Virginia Giuffre, recorded by notorious pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, is reportedly on the verge of being released by the Department of Justice, a source told The US Sun.

It can be recalled that Attorney General Pam Bondi was caught on hidden camera by O’Keefe Media Group, stating that the FBI is currently reviewing “tens of thousands of videos” seized from Jeffrey Epstein’s properties—many featuring “little kids.”

“Do you know when the Epstein files are going to be released?” a concerned citizen asked Pam Bondi.

“We hope soon.” When pressed for more information, Bondi added, “No. You know what it is? There are tens of thousands of videos, and it’s all with little kids.”

“That’s where they’ve [the Department of Justice] been working. People don’t understand, but that’s what they’ve been working on going through,” Bondi said.

Bondi echoed this statement during a press briefing outside the White House.

“The FBI, they’re reviewing, tens of thousands of videos of Epstein with children or child porn, and there are hundreds of victims,” Bondi said in response to House Oversight Chairman Rep. James Comer’s allegation that the Epstein files may have already been destroyed.

“And no one victim will ever get released,” she added. “It’s just the volume, and that’s what they’re going through right now. The FBI is diligently going through that.”

And now, according to The U.S. Sun, previously unreleased interviews with Giuffre detail a “highly embarrassing” and specific trait about Prince Andrew—proof, sources say, that the allegations weren’t just words, but based on unforgettable encounters.

Investigative journalist Barry Levine, who wrote a book about Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s trafficking empire, said, “Virginia talked about her alleged sexual abuse by Prince Andrew… and there was a specific personal detail she mentioned. It would be highly embarrassing for the Duke if it ever got out.”

Even after Epstein’s mysterious death in 2019—conveniently before he could testify—the FBI seized surveillance hard drives and tapes just two days later. Yet four years later, the public has seen nothing.

One insider told The Sun, “Andrew will be sweating over their release. If there’s anything in there that involves him, it would pile more misery and humiliation on him.”

As previously reported by The Gateway Pundit, the O’Keefe Media Group dropped a bombshell undercover video exposing longtime royal insider John Bryan making explosive allegations about Prince Andrew’s sickening ties to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein—and his alleged sexual encounters with minors.

According to OMG:

In revelation caught on hidden camera by O’Keefe Media Group (OMG), American businessman and long-time royal insider John Bryan has come forward with damning claims about Prince Andrew’s personal relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Bryan, a trusted advisor to the Duke of York, also alleged that Prince Andrew lied to him about his involvement in sexual misconduct with minors.

“I knew he [Prince Andrew] saw him [Jeffrey Epstein],” said Bryan, “But he lied to me that he was such a close friend,” revealed Bryan, referring to Prince Andrew’s personal relationship with Epstein.

[…]

“I did a big thing in The Daily Mail saying that I believed Andrew,” Bryan recounted to our undercover OMG journalist, adding, “And then I found out he was lying. I was so pissed.” When asked what Andrew had lied about, Bryan didn’t mince words: “That he was fucking underage girls. That’s not cool.”

THIS GUY NEEDS TO GO: RINO Thom Tillis Blasts Trump’s Plan to Slash Drug Prices — Calls ‘Most Favored Nation’ Policy “Shortsighted, Unsustainable” Despite Soaring Prescription Costs for Americans

Screenshot: C-SPAN

RINO Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) openly rebuked President Trump’s bold new plan to slash sky-high prescription drug prices during a Senate hearing on Pharmacy Benefit Managers and Drug Pricing.

During a heated Senate hearing on Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) and drug pricing, Tillis took aim at Trump’s executive order, calling the  “Most Favored Nation” (MFN) policy “shortsighted” and “unsustainable.”

Rather than stand with working Americans crushed by obscene prescription costs, Tillis chose to parrot talking points straight from the pharmaceutical lobby’s playbook.

“The ‘Most Favored Nation’ coming out of the administration, all these other things are short-sighted, unsustainable measures that are not going to produce the result. I do believe all of us on this committee want to achieve. It’s not the what, but we’ve got a very wide range of how,” said Tillis.

Classic RINO. Classic Swamp.

IT’S TIME TO PRIMARY TILLIS. Don Brown, a conservative attorney, best-selling author, and former U.S. Navy JAG officer, has officially declared his candidacy for the 2026 U.S. Senate race — targeting Tillis in the GOP primary.

While grassroots Republicans and working-class Americans cheer this move, D.C. elites are bristling.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune also showed signs of cold feet, telling Punchbowl News that codifying Trump’s EO into law would be “fairly controversial.”

Desiderio wrote, “Thune says Trump’s EO on prescription drug pricing would be “fairly controversial” if done legislatively. “He clearly wants to lower drug prices. It’s something that, like a lot of other issues, he’s had a passion about and believed in for a long time. So he’s acting on that.””

He added, “Thune and other [Republican] leaders have long opposed price-fixing efforts for prescription drugs.”

Far-Left CNN’s Jake Tapper Says Biden’s Health So Bad Advisers Feared He’d Need a Wheelchair if Re-Elected (VIDEO)

Joe Biden’s physical and mental deterioration has been evident for years to any sentient human being. But now, a new book has revealed even more disturbing information that has been hidden from the public.

As TGP readers may know, liberal CNN hack Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson have written a new book called “Original Sin,” which is due out on May 20. The book details Biden’s initial run for re-election despite clear evidence of decline and his regime’s efforts to censor the truth from the public.

Axios obtained passages from the forthcoming book on Tuesday, and the authors’ findings might even surprise conservatives. Of course, these leftist authors already knew these details for months but were waiting until Biden left office so they could cash in.

Tapper and Johnson reveal that Biden’s decline had become so serious that his handlers considered putting him in a wheelchair. But Biden’s employees believed doing so would doom any hope he had at seizing another term (Biden, of course, was forced out of the race anyway).

From Axios:

“Biden’s physical deterioration — most apparent in his halting walk — had become so severe that there were internal discussions about putting the president in a wheelchair, but they couldn’t do so until after the election,” the authors write.

Biden aides believed it was politically untenable to have Biden use a wheelchair during his re-election campaign.

“Given Biden’s age, [his physician Kevin O’Connor] also privately said that if he had another bad fall, a wheelchair might be necessary for what could be a difficult recovery,” the authors report.

The book also revealed that despite O’Connor’s Baghdad Bob-like pronouncements regarding Biden’s physical condition, particularly one injury to the White House occupant that required a walking boot, he was long alarmed at how the presidency was worsening Biden’s health. O’Connor was even worried that the then-White House occupants’ handlers might accidentally kill him.

The doctor often argued with Biden’s political officials to get more rest time into the president’s schedule.

O’Connor sometimes quipped that Biden’s staff members were trying to kill him, while he was trying to keep him alive.

A Biden spokesperson anonymously released a statement to Axios in response to the story, essentially saying there was nothing amiss about Biden’s physical health while insisting Americans should reject the evidence of their eyes and ears.

There were physical changes as he got older, but evidence of aging is not evidence of mental incapacity.

And so far, we are still waiting for someone, anyone, to point out where Joe Biden had to make a presidential decision or make a presidential address where he was unable to do his job because of mental decline. In fact, the evidence points to the opposite — he was a very effective president.

Eccentric Polish Presidential Candidate Sets EU Flag Alight; Says “Down With Eurocommunism”

Polish Presidential candidate Grzegorz Braun burns an EU flag in a ministry building in Katowice, Poland, with members of his political party Confederation

Eurocrats were thrown into an uproar last week after Polish presidential candidate and European Parliament member Grzegorz Braun—known for his provocative theatrical stunts—set fire to the European Union flag, condemning what he called the EU’s ‘ideological occupation’ of Poland by a globalist elite.

Braun, a Polish ultranationalist known for his bombastic style and unapologetic, unfiltered rhetoric, carried out the act at the historic Wujek coal mine in Katowice—a symbolic site tied to Poland’s anti-communist resistance.

First, he stormed into the Ministry of Industry, tore down the EU flag, wiped his shoes on it, and then burned it outside the building. “This is Poland—down with Euro-Communism,” he proclaimed in the video posted to his social media accounts.

Polish politician Grzegorz Braun tore down the European Union flag, wiped his shoes with it, and burned it.

He stated that Poland would not display the symbols of what he called a hostile organization.

— The British Patriot (@TheBritLad) May 7, 2025

“This organization has led to Poland’s liquidation,” Braun declared, referring to the European Union. “We will not tolerate symbols from hostile structures. In Poland, we do not show the signs of enemy organizations. These emblems carry no legal protection here.”

The action was part of Braun’s EU critical, to put it lightly, campaign ahead of Poland’s upcoming presidential election. He’s positioning himself as the uncompromising defender of Polish sovereignty against what he sees as the EU’s overreach, particularly in energy and environmental policy, which he claims threatens the heart of Polish industry.

“This is Poland, not Brussels!” Braun shouted during the protest, as coal miners cheered him on in solidarity.

Braun’s presidential campaign has centered around opposing EU mandates, defending traditional Polish values, and fighting what he calls “globalist totalitarianism.”

He’s slammed Brussels for policies he believes are dismantling national identity and imposing liberal ideology on conservative nations. At the Wujek site, he accused the EU of deliberately targeting Poland’s coal sector in the name of climate dogma.

The act sparked outrage among establishment media and EU officials, particularly as it came just one day after the European Parliament stripped Braun of his parliamentary immunity. The move paves the way for Polish authorities to prosecute him for a slew of past incidents, including using a fire extinguisher in the Polish parliament to extinguish Hanukkah candles in December 2023.

“There can be no place for acts of racist and tribal Talmudic worship on the territory of the Republic of Poland,” Braun declared after the Hanukkah incident, which he condemned as a political performance by a foreign religious lobby inside a national institution.

Braun’s list of alleged offenses doesn’t stop there. He’s been accused of removing a Christmas tree decorated with LGBT symbols from a courthouse, disrupting a Holocaust lecture at the German Historical Institute, and confronting a doctor over an abortion procedure.

Despite his notoriety and dramatic flair, Braun is polling at a mere one to three percent in the presidential race, making a run-off spot extremely unlikely.

Former Biden-Harris Staffer Takes an Extremely Disturbing Shot at White South African Refugees During Heated CNN Segment (VIDEO)

Credit: CNN screenshot

A left-wing panelist dropped the dog whistle and screamed directly into her bullhorn during a shocking display of anti-white racism last night while complaining about persecuted South Africans receiving refugee status.

AS TGP readers know, the Trump administration is resettling increasingly racially persecuted white South African farmers, specifically Afrikaners, in the United States. This is a long-overdue response to the violent racial persecution of an ethnic minority left to fend for itself in a crumbling, post-apartheid South Africa. These farmers, the very backbone of South Africa’s food supply, trace their ancestry back to Dutch and French settlers.

The first group of white South African refugees arrived in the United States on Monday. As one will see, these 59 refugees waved AMERICAN flags as they were welcomed to DC by Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, and DHS Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar welcomed the refugees.

And these are actually FAMILIES, not young military-aged men masquerading as refugees in an attempt to conquer their ‘new land.’

.@DeputySecState greets the first flight of South African refugee arrivals in the US: “@POTUS made it clear that Afrikaners in South Africa who are the victims of unjust racial discrimination would be welcome to come to the United States and he’s now delivering on that promise.” pic.twitter.com/cB8lOY3PNq

— Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) May 12, 2025

Unsurprisingly, the left was furious upon seeing America daring to help Caucasian refugees. But nothing compared to what former Biden-Harris staffer Ashley Allison had to say on CNN Monday night.

Allison first argued that the racist South African regime, which is ruled by the country’s black majority, was perfectly justified in stealing the Afrikaners’ land and giving it to the black population. Then, she made this sickening remark:

If the Afrikaners don’t like the land, they can leave that country…They can leave and go to where their native land is, probably Germany or Holland.

Back during the days of Jim Crow, black people were told if they did not like how things were that they should go back to Africa. Now, we have a black Democrat in America telling suffering white refugees that they don’t belong in their native country or their new one.

Just imagine the uproar and consequences for Jennings if he said Hispanics in America should return to Mexico or Blacks should go back to Ghana. Of course, the situation is entirely different when racism is targeted toward one particular ethnic group.

On Iran, Trump Should Resist the Zero-Enrichment Fantasy

On Iran, Trump Should Resist the Zero-Enrichment Fantasy

After diplomatic backtracking this weekend, here’s how the president can strike a nuclear deal with Tehran.

Credit: Borna_Mirahmadian

President Donald Trump told reporters Monday that “very good things” are happening in his nuclear diplomacy with Iran, adding, “I think they’re being very reasonable thus far.” His optimistic tone was echoed by Iranian diplomats and Omani mediators, with Iran’s foreign minister describing the talks this weekend as “more serious” and “more detailed” than past meetings. Yet behind the upbeat rhetoric, a more complex and challenging reality is taking shape.

While earlier rounds made progress toward limiting—though not eliminating—Iran’s nuclear enrichment, even prompting parallel technical discussions, the latest round saw a slight reversal. The setback stemmed from the U.S. insistence on the unrealistic demand that Iran abandon domestic enrichment entirely.

Shutting down Iran’s more than 20,600 centrifuges is not required to achieve Trump’s stated goal of preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon. Nonetheless, it remains a long-standing demand of hardliners such as George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Nikki Haley, Mike Pompeo, and John Bolton. Many of them understood that insisting on total Iranian capitulation was the quickest path to derailing diplomacy and laying the groundwork for war.

There are several reasons why Trump should not allow himself to be pushed into pursuing the zero-enrichment fantasy.

First, this goal has not only proven unattainable but also counterproductive, gifting Iran more time to advance its program while delaying the constraints a realistic, verification-based agreement would impose.

In 2003, Iran proposed to the U.S. a comprehensive deal aimed at resolving all major disputes, including limits on its enrichment program. At the time, Tehran had just 164 centrifuges, no stockpile of low-enriched uranium, and no capability to enrich above 3.67 percent—sufficient for civilian fuel but far below the 90 percent required for nuclear weapons.

As I describe in Treacherous Alliance, the Bush administration not only ignored the proposal but also punished the Swiss ambassador in Tehran for delivering Iran’s diplomatic overture to Washington. For Bush, nothing short of zero enrichment and regime change in Iran was acceptable.

In the absence of a deal, Iran’s nuclear program steadily expanded. By 2006, it was operating over 3,000 centrifuges. The Bush administration reluctantly agreed to support European-led talks but imposed a fatal precondition: Iran had to halt enrichment before negotiations could begin. Predictably, diplomacy stalled—and Iran’s program advanced unchecked.

By the time Barack Obama took office in 2009, Iran was operating 8,000 centrifuges and had stockpiled 1,500 kg of low-enriched uranium—enough for one nuclear weapon if further enriched. Obama’s early diplomatic efforts faltered, but by 2012, secret talks in Oman produced a breakthrough since, for the first time, the U.S. signaled it would accept enrichment in Iran in exchange for strict limits and intrusive inspections.

This breakthrough paved the way for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal. By the time it was implemented, Iran had expanded its program to 19,000 centrifuges and amassed over 10,000 kg of low-enriched uranium.

Over the past two decades, the persistent demand for zero enrichment—an unachievable goal—has only resulted in a larger and more advanced Iranian nuclear program by postponing realistic, enforceable limits on enrichment.

While these delays were damaging in the past, they pose an even greater risk today amid the looming crisis over potential UN snapback sanctions. This is yet another reason why Trump should avoid falling into the zero-enrichment trap.

The snapback mechanism, created as part of the JCPOA, allows any party to the nuclear deal to swiftly reimpose UN sanctions on Iran—without the risk of a veto from any permanent member of the UN Security Council. It was designed as a deterrent, offering a fast, veto-proof path to restore sanctions if Iran violated the agreement. However, this mechanism expires in October, and the European parties—France, Germany, and the UK—are inclined to trigger it before that deadline.

Tehran has made its position clear: If snapback is invoked, it will not only withdraw from the JCPOA but also exit the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and expel all IAEA inspectors, effectively turning its nuclear program into a black box. Exiting the NPT takes 90 days, during which there remains a window to reverse course. To align these timelines, the Europeans are expected to initiate the snapback process in June, ensuring that both the NPT withdrawal and the full reimposition of sanctions converge just before October—after which Europe loses the legal ability to act.

This would create a 90-day window for high-stakes negotiations, but one Trump should avoid for several reasons. First, the starting point would be far worse than the current talks, given the escalation caused by snapback sanctions and an NPT exit. Second, it would force the Europeans back into the process, complicating matters unnecessarily. Finally, with slim chances of success, the talks would likely shift toward renegotiating the snapback deadline to prevent a complete collapse and avoid military confrontation.

As a result, valuable time that should be spent securing restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities would instead be consumed by negotiations over a new UNSC resolution to extend the snapback deadline. These talks would face the added difficulty of aligning the interests of the Europeans, Russia, and China, all while dealing with other geopolitical conflicts (e.g., Ukraine). In essence, a tough negotiation with Iran would be swapped for a nearly impossible one with Russia and the EU.

All of these paths eventually lead to the worst-case scenario: The collapse of diplomacy and the likely shift toward military action.

Trump is wise to be skeptical of war with Iran. Contrary to the narrative pushed by Israel and its neoconservative allies, Iran’s regional setbacks do not leave it defenseless or incapable of striking U.S. bases and personnel in the event of conflict. While the weakening of Hezbollah and the loss of Syria are significant, they haven’t affected Iran’s missile program, which remains its primary means of retaliation.

Over the past year, the U.S. military has learned that Iran’s missile capabilities are far more advanced and dangerous than previously believed. Iran’s October 2024 missile retaliation against Israel was, contrary to mainstream accounts, highly effective, breaching Israel’s air defenses—from the Iron Dome to the Arrow, David’s Sling, and Patriots. In response to this failure, the Netanyahu government requested that President Joe Biden deploy America’s most advanced missile defense system, the THAAD, to Israel. Biden obliged.

Privately, the success of the attack stunned Israeli officials and prompted the Pentagon to revise its casualty estimates for a potential war with Iran. Those estimates were likely adjusted again after a single Houthi missile breached both the THAAD system and Israel’s air defenses, striking Ben Gurion Airport last week. Unlike the Iranian missile barrages, in which large numbers of missiles were launched to overwhelm the defenses, the Houthis fired only one missile—and still managed to bypass both the THAAD and Israel’s own systems.

Consequently, war with Iran will not only fail to destroy its nuclear program—Israel’s proposed bombing campaign would only delay it by a year, after which the US and Israel would have to bomb it again and again—it will likely also leave scores of Americans dead and destroy Trump’s presidency, just as the Iraq war destroyed Bush’s.

All these worst-case scenarios can be avoided. Trump has a better shot at striking a strong deal with Iran than any previous president—if he avoids the mistakes of the past and the illusion of zero enrichment. While Steve Witkoff and Marco Rubio have publicly insisted on zero enrichment as the only solution, Trump has wisely been more ambiguous. In the end, it’s his word—and only his—that matters.
